Who Is Lady Gaga?

Early life and career, debut album: 'the fame', 'born this way', working with tony and golden globe, golden globe for 'american horror story', success with 'joanne', super bowl performances, 'a star is born', las vegas residency, 'chromatica' and 'one world', personal life, quick facts.

Lady Gaga attended New York University's Tisch School for the Arts but left to find creative expression. Her debut album, The Fame , was a huge success, and the single "Poker Face" topped charts in almost every category, in almost every country. Lady Gaga has since earned acclaim for subsequent albums, including a collaboration with Tony Bennett , as well as her acting skills, nabbing a Golden Globe for her contributions to American Horror Story and an Oscar nomination for her co-starring role in A Star Is Born .

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born on March 28, 1986, in Yonkers, New York, to Cynthia and Joseph Germanotta. Now known as Lady Gaga (the inspiration for her name came from the Queen song "Radio Ga-Ga"), she has become an international pop star.

Gaga learned to play the piano by the age of 4. At the age of 11, she was accepted to the Juilliard School in Manhattan, but instead attended a private Catholic school in the city. She continued studying music and performing, writing her first piano ballad at the age of 13, and she held her first performance in a New York nightclub at the age of 14.

A few years later, Gaga was granted early admission to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts — she was one of only 20 students in the world to receive the honor of early acceptance. While there, she studied music and worked on her songwriting skills. She later withdrew from school to find creative inspiration. To make ends meet, she took three jobs, including a stint as a gogo dancer, while she honed her performance-art act.

In 2005, Lady Gaga was briefly signed by Def Jam Records, but was dropped just months later. Being dropped by the label propelled the singer to perform on her own in clubs and venues on New York City's Lower East Side. There, she collaborated with several rock bands, and began her experimentation with fashion.

In 2007, at the age of 20, Gaga began work at Interscope Records as a songwriter for other artists on the label, including Britney Spears , New Kids on the Block and The Pussycat Dolls. R&B singer Akon discovered Gaga while she was performing a burlesque show that she created, called "Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue." Impressed, Akon signed the performer to his label under the Interscope umbrella, Kon Live. Through 2007 and 2008, Gaga wrote and recorded her debut album, The Fame . The record received positive reviews and was successful in the United States. With the help of her own creative team, "Haus of Gaga," the performer also began to make a name for herself internationally.

'Just Dance,' 'Poker Face'

Lady Gaga's debut single, "Just Dance," was released to radio in early 2008, and received both popular and commercial acclaim. The song was then nominated for a Grammy Award (for best dance recording) in 2008. The song lost to Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," but this didn't keep Gaga from reaching No. 1 on the mainstream pop charts in January 2009. The second single off The Fame , "Poker Face," earned Gaga even more success. The song topped singles charts in almost every category, and in almost every country. Both songs were produced by Akon's affiliate RedOne, who co-wrote most of Lady Gaga's album.

Later in 2008, Lady Gaga opened for the newly reformed New Kids on the Block. She also collaborated with them on the song "Big Girl Now" from the group's album The Block . The following year, Gaga released an album of eight songs, The Fame Monster , followed by 2011's Born This Way . In 2013, Lady Gaga released her third studio album, Artpop . The album didn't resonate as strongly with her audience as her previous works. Among the shake-ups in her inner circle, she and her manager parted ways.

In 2014, she released an album of jazz duets with crooner Tony Bennett entitled Cheek to Cheek , which later won a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. In an interview with Parade , Lady Gaga said of her latest collaboration, “Working with Tony has reaffirmed everything I knew but that you start to forget when your life changes and it gets really noisy. For Tony, it’s all about great music.”

Gaga continued to showcase her versatility and strength as a vocalist at the Academy Awards telecast in February 2015, paying tribute to the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music and actress/singer Julie Andrews by performing selections from the musical.

In 2021, Gaga and Bennett released their second collaborative album Love for Sale , which won best traditional pop vocal album at the Grammys in 2022.

Later that year, Gaga also showed her gifts as an actress by co-starring in American Horror Story: Hotel , earning a Golden Globe for her portrayal of The Countess. At the ceremony, a visibly stunned and emotional Gaga acknowledged that acting was her first dream before she embraced music, and thanked her fellow cast members and producer Ryan Murphy for their support. Gaga returned to the show for its sixth season, playing a witch in American Horror Story: Roanoke .

In February 2016, Gaga, joined by guitarist/producer Nile Rodgers, performed a tribute to the late David Bowie . Paying homage to one of her biggest musical heroes, a red-wigged Gaga sang a short medley of Bowie's hits. She also performed at the 88th Annual Academy Awards, performing "Til It Happens to You" after being introduced by then-Vice President Joe Biden . The song was from the 2015 documentary The Hunting Ground , which looked at the issue of rape on college campuses. Assault survivors were brought to the stage toward the close of the song, with the performance earning a standing ovation.

In October 2016, Gaga released her fifth studio album, Joanne , her fourth album to reach No. 1 in the United States and top the charts in countries around the world. Partnering with producer Mark Ronson, Gaga tapped into her own life story for the album that is named after her aunt and father's sister, Joanne Germanotta, who died of lupus complications at the age of 19 before Gaga was born. “Returning to your family and where you came from, and your history ... this is what makes you strong,” Lady Gaga told People magazine . “It’s not looking out that’s going to do that – it’s looking in. Joanne is a progression for me. It was about going into the studio and forgetting that I was famous.”

She also told People that her relationships influenced the stories she tells in Joanne . “When you listen to the album, it’s clear the influence that all the men in my life have made on this record," she said. "That’s at the center of it, as well: I always wanted to be a good girl. And Joanne was such a good girl. But I have such a rebellious spirit, and my father was always very angry. He drank because of his sister’s death. I was trying to understand him through making this record, and in that, also trying to understand why I love men that are cowboys.”

Gaga launched the Joanne World Tour in support of her latest album in August 2017. She later nabbed a Best Pop Solo Performance Grammy for the album's title track.

In 2016, Lady Gaga performed the national anthem at Super Bowl 50, and she returned the following year to headline the Super Bowl LI halftime show. She began her powerhouse performance on the roof of the NRG Stadium in Houston, singing parts of "God Bless America" and "This Land is Your Land" and reciting an excerpt of the pledge of allegiance before diving through the air suspended by wires to the stage. Her halftime show included a medley of her iconic songs including "Edge of Glory," "Bad Romance," "Poker Face," "Born This Way," "Telephone," "Just Dance," as well as "Million Reasons" from her album Joanne .

In 2016, it was announced that Gaga had been cast in a remake of A Star Is Born as Ally, a role previously inhabited by Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand . She was slated to co-star with Bradley Cooper , who was also making his directorial debut with the project.

A Star Is Born became a hit with audiences upon its October 2018 release, grossing an impressive $400 million globally. The co-stars both earned Academy Award nominations for their performances, while their duet for the film, "Shallow," produced Golden Globe, Grammy and Oscar wins for Gaga.

On December 19, 2017, Gaga announced via Instagram that she had signed on for a Las Vegas residency. The following August, she confirmed that she would begin her residency at MGM Resorts' Park Theater at the end of the year, performing two separate shows over 27 dates: Lady Gaga Enigma, a collection of her most popular songs, and Lady Gaga Jazz & Piano, which features stripped-down versions of her greatest hits as well as selections from the Great American Songbook.

With her sixth studio album, Chromatica , on the way, Gaga in February 2020 released the dance-worthy single "Stupid Love," her first new music in three years, along with a typically eye-catching video that showed her defeating the forces of evil with her "Kindness punks." Her follow-up single with Ariana Grande , "Rain on Me," dropped in late May, one week before the release of the well-received Chromatica .

Meanwhile, Gaga had teamed with the international advocacy group Global Citizen to organize the "One World: Together At Home" virtual concert in April. Featuring performances from luminaries like Paul McCartney , Elton John and Taylor Swift , the event raised more than $127 million to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

On Valentine’s Day 2015, Lady Gaga became engaged to Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney. After five years together, in July 2016, it was reported that the couple called off their engagement and parted ways.

Gaga then got engaged to her agent, Christian Carino, in summer 2017. In February 2019, after the singer attended the Grammys without her fiancé, a representative confirmed that the engagement was off.

In early 2020, the entertainer extraordinaire went public with her relationship with tech CEO Michael Polansky.

  • Lady Gaga, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, is an American songwriter, singer, actress, philanthropist, dancer and fashion designer. Gaga was born on March 28, 1986 in Manhattan, New York City, to Cynthia Louise (Bissett), a philanthropist and business executive, and Joseph Anthony Germanotta, Jr., an internet entrepreneur. Her father is of Italian descent; and her mother, who is from West Virginia, is of half Italian and half French, English, German, and Scottish ancestry. Gaga was able to sing and play the piano from a young age. She attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart from age 11 where was bullied for her appearance (she was small and plumper than other girls with large front teeth) and eccentric habits. By the age of 14, Gaga was performing at open mike nights in clubs and bars. By age 17, she had gained early admission to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. In addition to sharpening her songwriting skills, she composed essays and analytical papers on art, religion, social issues and politics. At the age of 19 Gaga withdrew from her studies and moved out of her parents' home in order to pursue a musical career. During this time she started a band which began to gain local attention. After a brief partnership with talent scout Rob Fusari, which resulted in the creation of her stage name, Gaga was signed to Def Jam Records in 2006; however she was dropped from the label after just three months. Devastated, Gaga returned home, and became increasingly experimental: fascinating herself with emerging neo-burlesque shows, go-go dancing at bars dressed in little more than a bikini in addition to experimenting with drugs. Gaga met performance artist Lady Starlight during this time; after a performance at Lollapalooza Festival in 2007 Gaga was signed by Vince Herbert to Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. Having served as an apprentice songwriter under an internship at Famous Music Publishing, which was later acquired by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Gaga subsequently struck a music publishing deal with Sony/ATV. As a result, she was hired to write songs for Britney Spears and labelmates New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player." In 2008 Gaga released her first album 'The Fame' to lukewarm radio play; Gaga toured around Europe and in gay clubs in the US to promote the album - however it was not until her first hit 'Just Dance' came to mainstream attention in 2009 that Gaga exploded onto the music scene. Since then Gaga has gained numerous awards and nominations for a string of hits; her first album spawned several more smash hits 'Paparazzi', 'Loveame' and 'Poker Face'); while touring the album Gaga wrote 'The Fame Monster', an EP examining the darker side to her new-found fame. The Fame Monster was released in 2009 and won multiple awards, spawning her most iconic single 'Bad Romance' as well as 'Telephone' and 'Alejandro'. During this time Gaga came under increased public and critical scrutiny for her eccentric and often bizarre style choices. Gaga embarked on her second tour, The Monster Ball; upon finishing in May 2011, the critically acclaimed and commercially accomplished tour ran for over one and a half years and grossed $227.4 million, making it one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time and the highest-grossing for a debut headlining artist. Concerts performed at Madison Square Garden in New York City were filmed for an HBO television special. The special accrued one of its five Emmy Award nominations and has since been released on DVD and Blu-ray. In 2011 Gaga released her second full-length album 'Born this Way'; the album was received vastly more critically than her previous two for touching on themes of politics, sexuality, and religion. Despite this, the album's songs were praised critically, and Born This Way sold 1.108 million copies in its first week in the US, debuting atop the Billboard 200, and topping the charts in more than 20 other countries. In addition to exceeding 8 million copies in worldwide sales, Born This Way received 3 Grammy Award nominations, including her third consecutive for Album of the Year. In March 2012, Gaga was ranked fourth on Billboard's list of top moneymakers of 2011, grossing $25,353,039 dollars, which included sales from Born This Way and her Monster Ball Tour. At the end of April 2012, Gaga's Born This Way kicked off in Korea - the tour would last 2 years and take the singer to every continent of the globe. However in February 2012 the tour was abruptly canceled; Gaga had a labral tear in her right hip which she had been nursing secretly for several weeks in the hopes that she would be able to continue the tour. After a performance in Toronto left her unable to walk and in considerable pain, she was taken to hospital for surgery and the tour was canceled. Through to Jan. 17, the tour had grossed $168.2 million and moved 1.6 million tickets to 85 shows, according to Billboard Boxscore, with the Asian, European, and South American legs already completed in 2012. The North American leg, which was to wrap the tour and was almost completely sold out, would have likely put the tour at more than $200 million gross, easily in the top 20 tours of all time and probably in the top 15, according to Billboard. As it stands, Gaga finished sixth among all touring artists in 2012, with a gross of $125 million and attendance of more than 1.1 million, according to Boxscore. Gaga wrote her third album, ARTPOP, released in 2013. Gaga made her acting debut in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills (2013) , the sequel to his 2010 film Machete, and also appeared in Rodriguez's sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) . In 2018, she starred with Bradley Cooper , who also directed, in A Star Is Born (2018) . Gaga received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the role. - IMDb Mini Biography By: Georgina Bradbury

Gaga only discovered this when one of her close friends showed her the YouTube video of the parody Yankovic had just uploaded to his account, called "Perform This Way", after having gone viral via Twitter. Her manager forced Yankovic to go through (at his own expense) the process of writing, recording, mixing and mastering the song, all while Yankovic was on tour in Australia, prior to denying permission to him. Yankovic felt that if he had to jump through all those hoops, it should still be heard, if not on his album, then online. When Gaga finished watching the video, she personally called Yankovic, and emphatically overruled her manager. Gaga stated that she was never told he had even reached out to her, and would have given him permission on the spot. She also said she was a huge fan of his, she loved what she had heard in the video he had uploaded and felt it was "very empowering" and "a rite of passage" to be parodied by Yankovic, and to release the song on his album as he originally planned. This came just in time, since pulling the parody would have meant delaying Yankovic's album by several weeks or months. Both Gaga and Yankovic agreed to donate proceeds and royalties from the parody to the Human Rights Campaign.

(born 1986). American singer-songwriter and performance artist Lady Gaga was known for her flamboyant costumes and sexy lyrics. She achieved popular success with songs such as “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Bad Romance,” and “Shallow.”

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born on March 28, 1986, in New York, New York. She learned music at an early age and was performing onstage in New York City clubs by the time she was a teenager. She studied for two years at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University before dropping out to manage her own career. She began transforming herself into Lady Gaga—a name derived from Queen’s song “Radio Ga Ga”—with a style that combined glam rock and over-the-top fashion design.

In 2007 Lady Gaga and performance artist Lady Starlight formed a revue called the Ultimate Pop Burlesque Rockshow. During that time Lady Gaga also wrote songs for other pop artists such as Fergie, the Pussycat Dolls, and Britney Spears . That same year the rapper Akon and Interscope Records signed Lady Gaga to a deal. She subsequently began preparing her debut album The Fame (2008).

Lady Gaga modeled herself on such theatrical performers as David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust period, the New York Dolls, and Freddie Mercury of the band Queen. However, she created a character that came to occupy a unique space in the music world. She wore extravagant costumes and eye-catching wigs—many of them created by her own Haus of Gaga. Combined with her up-tempo synthetic dance music and edgy performance style, Lady Gaga created stunning sounds and onstage visuals.

Lady Gaga’s 2008 single “Just Dance” (from The Fame ) earned a Grammy nomination in 2009. However, she was then ineligible for a nomination in 2010 as best new artist. (This perceived injustice prompted the Recording Academy to revise that rule later in 2010.) Three other singles from The Fame —“Poker Face,” “LoveGame,” and “Paparazzi”—also reached number one. At the 2010 Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga won for best dance recording (“Poker Face”) and best electronic/dance album.

At the end of 2009, Lady Gaga embarked on the sold-out Monster Ball Tour to coincide with the release of her second album, The Fame Monster . Although the album contained only eight songs, three of them—“Bad Romance,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro”—became hits in 2010. (The album won a Grammy Award in 2011 for best pop vocal album while “Bad Romance” won a Grammy for best female pop vocal and best short form music video.) To cement her position as one of the most commercially successful artists in 2010, Lady Gaga made a headline performance at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago, Illinois, and appeared in front of 20,000 people for NBC’s Today show.

Lady Gaga’s third album, Born This Way , appeared in 2011. It produced the hit songs “Born This Way” and “Judas.” In 2013 Lady Gaga released Artpop . The energetic lead single “Applause” extended her string of chart successes. However, the album was commercially disappointing. She came back the following year with Cheek to Cheek , a collection of songs that she recorded with Tony Bennett . The recording topped the jazz and traditional jazz album charts, and it earned the Grammy for best traditional pop vocal album. In 2016 Lady Gaga released the album Joanne . A diverse collection of songs, it included touches of country, rock, dance, and pop. She won a Grammy in 2019 for best pop performance for the song “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?).” Meanwhile, in 2017 she performed in the halftime Super Bowl show. For her sixth studio album,  Chromatica  (2020), Lady Gaga returned to her earlier music, mixing disco and electronic-pop. She and Ariana Grande won the 2020 Grammy Award for best pop duo/group performance for the song “Rain on Me.”

In addition to recording music, Lady Gaga made occasional acting appearances. She appeared in the films Machete Kills (2013) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014). She then played a vampire in the television show American Horror Story: Hotel (2015–16). For that performance, she received a Golden Globe Award. She also appeared in the sixth season of the show, which aired in 2016. In 2018 Lady Gaga played an up-and-coming singer-songwriter in a remake of the film A Star Is Born . It was her first lead role, and she earned a best actress Oscar nomination for her performance. She also cowrote most of the movie’s songs, many of which she performed with costar and director Bradley Cooper . In 2019 the lead single, “Shallow,” won Grammy Awards for best pop duo/group performance and best song written for visual media, as well as an Academy Award for best original song.

Lady Gaga cultivated a devoted following, particularly among gay men. She became particularly outspoken on gay rights , especially same-sex marriage . She was a featured speaker at the 2009 National Equality March in Washington, D.C. In 2021 Lady Gaga sang the national anthem at the U.S. presidential inauguration of  Joe Biden .

1986–2004: Early Years

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, renowned as  Lady Gaga , was born on March 28, 1986, at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, New York City. Hailing from an upper-middle-class Catholic family, Gaga’s parents proudly took Italian ancestry. Her mother, Cynthia Louise (née Bissett), is recognized as a philanthropist and business executive, while her father is the Internet entrepreneur Joseph Germanotta. In addition to her parents, Gaga has a younger sister named Natali.

Growing up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Lady Gaga shared in an interview that her parents, despite their current status, originated from lower-class backgrounds and diligently worked for their achievements. At 11, she began her education at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, an esteemed private all-girls Roman Catholic school. Reflecting on her high-school years, Gaga described herself as “very dedicated, very studious, very disciplined,” yet admitted to feeling a bit insecure. As a self-acknowledged misfit, she faced ridicule for being perceived as “too provocative or too eccentric.”

Lady Gaga’s musical journey began early, with her mother’s insistence that she become a “cultured young woman,” leading her to play the piano at the tender age of four. Piano lessons and a commitment to practice marked her childhood. Gaga developed an ability to create music by ear, a skill she favored over reading sheet music. Encouraged by her parents, she joined the Creative Arts Camp, further nurturing her musical talents.

During her teenage years, Lady Gaga ventured into the realm of open mic nights, honing her skills and setting the stage for her future musical endeavors. Her theatrical prowess was showcased when she played lead roles in school productions such as Adelaide in  Guys and Dolls  and Philia in  A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum  at Regis High School. Gaga’s commitment to her craft extended to ten years of studying method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Despite facing initial setbacks, including unsuccessful auditions for New York shows, Lady Gaga made a brief appearance in a 2001 episode of  The Sopranos , titled “The Telltale Moozadell,” portraying a minor background role as a high-school student.

In 2003, at 17, Lady Gaga embarked on her journey into the world of music. She secured early admission to Collaborative Arts Project 21, a renowned music school at New York University’s (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts, where she resided in an NYU dormitory. Gaga’s time at NYU was dedicated to studying music, and she honed her songwriting skills through essays exploring art, religion, social issues, and politics. Her academic pursuits included a thesis on pop artists Spencer Tunick and Damien Hirst.

However, in 2005, during the second semester of her second year, Gaga made a pivotal decision. She withdrew from school, redirecting her focus entirely toward her burgeoning music career. This transformative year also saw Gaga making a surprising appearance as an unwitting diner customer on MTV’s  Boiling Points , a reality television prank show.

In a candid 2014 interview, Lady Gaga revealed a deeply personal and traumatic experience. At the age of 19, she disclosed that she had been a victim of sexual assault. Subsequently, Gaga underwent both mental and physical therapy to cope with the aftermath of this harrowing event. The incident left her with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition she openly attributes to the assault. Gaga acknowledged the crucial role of support from doctors, family, and friends in her healing journey.

Providing additional details about the assault, Gaga disclosed that the assailant had left her pregnant on a street corner near her parent’s house after the attack. This distressing episode unfolded because of the abuse she had endured, recounting a period of being secluded in a studio for months.

2005–2007: Early Career

In the pivotal years of 2005 to 2007, Lady Gaga’s musical odyssey commenced, laying the foundation for her extraordinary career. In 2005, Gaga contributed her vocals to two songs alongside hip-hop artist Melle Mel for an audio book accompanying Cricket Casey’s children’s novel, The Portal in the Park . Concurrently, she collaborated with friends from NYU to form the SGBand, making waves by playing gigs around New York and becoming a fixture in the vibrant downtown Lower East Side club scene.

Following the 2006 Songwriters Hall of Fame New Songwriters Showcase at the Cutting Room in June, Gaga’s talent caught the eye of talent scout Wendy Starland. Starland’s recommendation led Gaga to the doorstep of music producer Rob Fusari. The collaboration unfolded with Gaga making daily trips to New Jersey, working on developing her songs, and crafting new material. Their creative journey also saw the emergence of a personal connection, with Fusari claiming to be the first to christen her “Lady Gaga” in May 2006, drawing inspiration from Queen’s iconic song, “Radio Ga Ga.” Their romantic entanglement persisted until January 2007.

Fusari and Gaga co-founded “Team Lovechild, LLC,” a venture to propel her career forward. Together, they recorded and produced electropop tracks, sending their creations to industry executives. Joshua Sarubin, the head of Artists and Repertoire (A&R) at Def Jam Recordings, responded positively, leading to Gaga’s signing with Def Jam in September 2006. However, the association was short-lived, as Gaga was dropped from the label three months later. Undeterred, she returned to her family home for Christmas and redirected her focus.

Gaga immersed herself in the world of neo-burlesque shows during this period, considering it a representation of freedom. During these performances, she crossed paths with performance artist Lady Starlight, a crucial influence in molding Gaga’s onstage persona. The duo, known as “Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue,” presented “The Ultimate Pop Burlesque Rockshow,” a live performance art piece paying homage to 1970s variety acts. Their artistic collaboration extended to the 2007 Lollapalooza music festival.

Lady Gaga is a famous singer who started her music career in the electronic dance music genre. Over time, she began incorporating pop melodies and was influenced by the glam rock style of David Bowie and Queen. Gaga was discovered by a producer named Vincent Herbert, who signed her to a record label called Streamline Records. She also secured a music publishing deal with Sony/ATV, which helped her write songs for famous artists like Britney Spears , Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. Later, she signed a joint deal with musician Akon ‘s label, KonLive, which made her his “franchise player.”

In 2007, Lady Gaga collaborated with a music producer named RedOne for a week to create her debut album. She signed a contract with a record label named Cherrytree Records, a subsidiary of the larger company called Interscope. However, some radio stations were reluctant to play Gaga’s music, as they thought it was too daring, too dance-focused, and not mainstream enough. In response, Gaga boldly declared , “My name is Lady Gaga, I’ve been on the music scene for years, and I’m telling you, this is what’s next.”

Despite canceling the tour’s last ten shows in 2018 due to fibromyalgia, the Joanne World Tour grossed an impressive $95 million from 842,000 tickets sold.

2018–2019: A Star Is Born and Las Vegas residency

In a spectacular turn of events from 2018 to 2019, Lady Gaga proved her artistic prowess in music on the big screen and the Las Vegas stage. In March 2018, Gaga took a stand for gun control by supporting the March for Our Lives rally in Washington, DC. Her versatility was evident as she covered Elton John’s “Your Song” for his tribute album,  Revamp .

However, the year’s highlight was her lead role as Ally in Bradley Cooper’s remake of the 1937 classic  A Star Is Born . The film, released worldwide in October 2018, received critical acclaim for its compelling narrative and Gaga’s outstanding performance. Her portrayal of Ally earned her several awards, including the National Board of Review and Critics’ Choice awards for Best Actress.

The musical magic continued as Gaga and Cooper co-wrote and produced most of the songs on the film’s soundtrack. 2020–present years:  Chromatica ,  Love for Sale , and Other Film Projects

In the ever-evolving saga of Lady Gaga’s career, the period from 2020 to the present has been marked by chart-topping music, film accomplishments, and myriad ventures.

In February 2020, Gaga embarked on a new personal journey, entering a relationship with entrepreneur Michael Polansky. This romantic chapter coincided with the release of her sixth studio album,  Chromatica , on May 29, 2020. The album, met with positive reviews, swiftly claimed the number-one spot on the US charts. The year 2021 saw Gaga making history as she performed the US national anthem during Joe Biden ‘s presidential inauguration on January 20. However, personal challenges arose when her dog walker, Ryan Fischer, was shot in Hollywood, and two of her French Bulldogs were taken. Gaga’s resilience shone through as she offered a substantial reward for their return. Although the dogs were later returned unharmed, legal proceedings followed, resulting in a 21-year prison sentence for the assailant, James Howard Jackson.

In 2021, Gaga delved into collaborations and new releases as a woman of many talents. In April, she partnered with Champagne brand Dom Pérignon and released her third remix album,  Dawn of Chromatica , in September. Gaga’s film journey continued with her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s  House of Gucci , released on November 24, 2021. Her immersive performance, including the New York Film Critics Circle Award, earned acclaim. Beyond acting, Gaga showcased her musical prowess by co-writing the song “Hold My Hand” for the film  Top Gun: Maverick , which she performed live at the 95th Academy Awards.

In July 2022, Gaga kicked off  The Chromatica Ball  stadium tour, which spanned twenty dates and grossed an impressive $112.4 million. The tour established her as the highest-grossing female artist of 2022.

As of April 2023, Gaga added another feather to her cap by being appointed as the co-chair of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities by President Joe Biden. Further, she collaborated with the Rolling Stones on the song “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” which was featured in their album  Hackney Diamonds  (2023). Looking ahead, Gaga’s star continues to rise as she is set to star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in  Joker: Folie à Deux , slated for release in 2024.

From an early age, Lady Gaga, with her distinctive plaited hair and vibrant style, found inspiration in an eclectic mix of musical legends. The pop prowess of Madonna and the groundbreaking charisma of David Bowie played crucial roles in shaping Gaga’s artistic vision. Growing up, her musical landscape was painted with the sounds of Michael Jackson, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Prince, En Vogue, TLC, Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson, and Blondie, each contributing to the mosaic of her musical identity.

Gaga’s diverse musical palette spans dance-pop sensations like Madonna and Michael Jackson to the flamboyant glam rock of David Bowie and Freddie Mercury . The influence of pop artist Andy Warhol and her roots in musical theater further add layers to her creative expression. Drawing comparisons to Madonna, Gaga aspires to revolutionize pop music just as her idol did. Heavy metal also finds a place in her musical lexicon, with bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Marilyn Manson leaving an indelible mark.

Gaga’s inspiration is not limited to music and fashion. Her fashion style combines innovation and boldness, and she draws inspiration from various sources, such as Leigh Bowery, Isabella Blow, Cher, and Alexander McQueen. She is known for her towering armadillo shoes, which became famous through her collaboration with McQueen. Donatella Versace is another fashion icon who inspires Gaga, and they share a mutual admiration beyond style. Princess Diana has been one of her role models since childhood and has significantly shaped Gaga’s fashion style.

Gaga’s inspiration is not limited to music and fashion; she also finds it in the spiritual realm. She admires Deepak Chopra, an Indian alternative medicine advocate, and considers him a “true inspiration.” Gaga also quotes Indian leader Osho’s book “Creativity” on Twitter, reflecting her appreciation for creativity, rebellion, and equality. Lady Gaga’s diverse sources of inspiration highlight her commitment to pushing boundaries and embracing creativity in all forms.

Censorship in China

It’s not a commonly known fact, but Lady Gaga encountered censorship challenges that shaped the trajectory of her presence in the People’s Republic of China, and her biography sheds light on how it happened.

In 2011, the Ministry of Culture, acting on behalf of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, banned Lady Gaga, citing her as “vulgar.” This prohibition, however, was lifted in 2014. Despite the resumption, conditions were set for the legal sale of  Artpop  in China. The album’s artwork, featuring Gaga in a nearly nude state, underwent modifications to align with regulatory requirements. Notably, the track “Sexxx Dreams” underwent a title change to “X Dreams” to meet the stipulated criteria.

The year 2016 saw a resurgence of the ban in China after Lady Gaga engaged in a public discussion with the Dalai Lama. This led to her inclusion on a list of perceived hostile foreign forces by the Chinese government. A directive was issued to cease the distribution of her songs on Chinese websites and media outlets. The Publicity Department of the Chinese Communist Party went a step further, instructing state-controlled media to condemn the meeting with the Dalai Lama.

Subsequently, during the 91st Academy Awards, Gaga’s image was intentionally omitted in Chinese media coverage, foreshadowing a pattern of censorship. Her appearance in  Friends: The Reunion  faced a similar fate, drawing criticism from her Chinese fanbase.

Lady Gaga’s journey through censorship reflects the complex interplay between artistic expression and regulatory scrutiny in the global landscape. These incidents underscore artists’ broader challenges in navigating the delicate balance between creative freedom and regulatory constraints.

LGBT Advocacy

Lady Gaga has emerged not only as a pop sensation but also as a fervent advocate for the rights of the LGBT community. Identifying as a bisexual woman, Gaga has been an unwavering supporter of LGBT rights globally.

Acknowledging the pivotal role played by her gay fans in propelling her early success, she proudly embraces her status as a gay icon. In the initial stages of her career, Gaga faced challenges securing radio airplay but found a supportive audience within the gay community, which she considers a turning point.

Her unwavering commitment to the cause took on various forms. In 2009, Gaga spoke at the National Equality March in Washington, DC, where she emphasized her support for the LGBT rights movement. At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, she highlighted the US military’s discriminatory “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Accompanied by four gay and lesbian former members of the Armed Forces affected by the policy, Gaga used her platform to advocate for its repeal. She urged her fans to join the fight against the discriminatory regulation.

Gaga’s activism extended to Europride in Rome in 2011, where she decried the insufficient state of gay rights in certain European countries. Tragically, her influence was underscored by the mention of her name in the final moments of teenager Jamey Rodemeyer’s life, prompting Gaga to address the issue of anti-gay bullying with then-President Barack Obama .

Her involvement continued in 2016 during a vigil in Los Angeles for the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack in Orlando. Gaga passionately read aloud the names of the 49 individuals who lost their lives and later participated in a Human Rights Campaign tribute video. The artist consistently opposed policies perceived as detrimental to the LGBT community, including Donald Trump’s military transgender ban.

In 2019, Gaga criticized Vice President Mike Pence during one of her Enigma shows for his association with a school that turned away LGBTQ individuals, asserting that such actions were not in line with the principles of Christianity. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Gaga delivered a congratulatory speech at WorldPride NYC 2019, reaffirming her commitment to equality and inclusion.

Gaga’s activism demonstrates her dedication to advocating for LGBT rights. She uses her platform to challenge discriminatory policies and promote a message of acceptance and love.

In a 2011 Rolling Stone ranking based on record sales and social media metrics, she earned the moniker “Queen of Pop.” Her influence extends beyond music, reaching realms as diverse as fashion, activism, and taxonomy.

Gaga’s controversial penchant has been a strategic tool to draw attention to social issues. Notably, her protest dressing on the red carpet, including the infamous meat dress, made a bold statement against the US military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Frankie Graddon of The Independent acknowledges Gaga’s role in influencing protest dressing, bringing a political edge to the glitz of Hollywood events.

Her meteoric rise in 2009 earned her the “Greatest Pop Star” title by Billboard. The success of her debut album,  The Fame , positioned Gaga as a game-changer in the music industry. She is credited with popularizing synth-pop in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Critics hailed Gaga’s innovative approach to celebrity, treating her fame as an evolving art project. The album  Born This Way  found a place among the 50 best female albums of all time, with Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield noting that it’s hard to imagine a world without Gaga.

Academic recognition came from a 2017 journal published by Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts, which identified Gaga’s tracks, including “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face,” as some of the catchiest. NPR acknowledged her impact, naming her the second most influential female artist of the 21st century in 2018, highlighting her significance in the “Internet age.”

Gaga’s influence transcends music, reaching a myriad of artists across genres. From Miley Cyrus to Kanye West , her innovative spirit has inspired a generation of musicians, validating her position as a cultural trailblazer. Even a new genus of ferns, aptly named  Gaga , and several species, including  G. germanotta ,  G. monstraparva , and  Kaikaia gaga , pay homage to her creative legacy.

Beyond taxonomy, Gaga has been commemorated in various ways globally. In Taiwan, July 3 is celebrated as “Lady Gaga Day,” marking her first visit in 2011. In West Hollywood, May 23 has been declared “Born This Way Day” in honor of the album’s tenth anniversary, with a street painting featuring Daniel Quasar’s pride flag version.

Lady Gaga is one of the most famous pop stars of the 21st century, with classic albums like The Fame Monster, Born This Way, and Joanne along with singles like ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Telephone.’

She made her debut to a storm of favourable applause and has lived up to the title, The Fame , with every move she makes. Gaga is a truly modern pop phenomenon, an artist of the highest calibre and intelligence she has few peers and practically no contemporary rivals. In some ways she is most reminiscent of a David Bowie figure – intriguingly alien yet utterly in charge of her muse. She has sold 27 million albums since 2008 and a staggering 125 million singles worldwide, over 7 million of those to elated British customers. Very much in tune with the Twitter and Instagram epoch, Lady Gaga is also known for her monster remixes, her dance crossover, her R&B chops and her cool sass. What many may not realise is that is she is a trained jazz singer and her latest escapade – Cheek To Cheek , is a collaboration with crooning legend Tony Bennett. Here you’ll find the duo tackling the classic American songbook with all the panache the Lady herself brought to “Just Dance”, “Poker Face” or “Telephone”.

The total professional, Gaga is a brand leader when it comes to live performance where her choreography and idiosyncratic sense of fashion are as much of a talking point as her songs. Not to say she is out to shock per se , nor to contrive a stage act: it’s just that theatricality is in her soul and if she skewers the status quo and challenges the normal we’re the better for that. She has been recognised from the outset and is the recipient of five Grammy awards and 13 MTV Music Awards – obviously, the later art form is one she’s mastered – mistressed? A regular on Billboard’s Artist of the Year this past six years she is also high on the Forbes earnings and power/influence ladder. Time magazine named our Lady one of the most important and influential people on the planet in 2010. Yet away from the business of show and, Gaga maintains a fairly private and low-key persona. She is a philanthropist too and has done for the LGBT rights movement with her activism and fundraising.

Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in March 1988, Lady Gaga comes from mixed Italian and French ancestry but was born in Lennon Hill, Manhattan and brought up in a well-to-do family on the fashionable Upper West Side of New York City. An accomplished pianist who began writing ballads as a teenager, Gaga was wowing folks at open mic events and starring in high school productions of meaty musicals like Guys and Dolls and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. In that sense, she has a conventional, somewhat old school upbringing, which has given her credibility and enabled her to buck those same conventions with authentic zeal. Moving to an apartment on chic Rivington Street aged 19 she began to explore her career in earnest writing early songs with Grandmaster Melle Mel before forming the Stefani Germanotta Band (SGBand), playing a mixture of originals and rock covers – Led Zeppelin’s “D’Yer Maker” amongst them.

‘V’ Facts: 20 Things You Need To Know About Maroon 5’s Fifth Album

Gigs in NYC showcase venues The Bitter End and Mercury Lounge brought her to the attention of local producers and one Rob Fusari became her mentor and paramour. Between them, they concocted the name Lady Gaga, after Queen’s “Radio Gaga” and it was goodbye to Stefani. A flirtation with Def Jam aside Gaga became immersed in the world of burlesque and go-go dancing, both empowering her.

The New York underground was her stomping ground in the same way it had been for the Velvets and Dolls back in the day. Neo-punk as she is Gaga cut her teeth on revue-style shows that incorporated electronic Avante Garde and elements of Freddie Mercury and Bowie into her act. She was then signed to Cherrytree Records, Inc., an Interscope, offshoot and made demos of “Boys Boys Boys”, “Christmas Tree” and “Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)” – while she was also hired as a songwriter to pen goodies for Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, Fergie and The Pussycat Dolls; but in reality, she was going to be the next big thing, no puppet of the industry.

In 2008 she moved to Los Angeles and got stuck into making The Fame . Sleeper hit “Just Dance” was a slow burner but gave Gaga her first Grammy for Best Dance Recording and then “Poker Face” just blew the world up. The most flamboyant single of the year by a long chalk it made number one in every significant territory and has shifted close on 10 million copies since.

Phenomenal is a word that’s overused but in Lady G’s case, it fits like a satin glove. The Fame disc was accompanied by the Fame Ball Tour where the album’s inner core of songs about sexuality, personal power struggles and intoxicating party grooves took on new life and convinced everyone that Madonna had finally met a match. Certainly, the cuts “Paparazzi” and “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich” revealed a principled artist with plenty of nerve.

The Cherrytree Sessions and the gothic-looking The Fame Monster project kept Gaga bang on the money with the former containing acoustic versions of “Poker Face”, “Just Dance” and “Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)”. Production and direction from Vincent Herbert and Martin Kierszenbaum lend all the work to date a strong European atmosphere while the Hitmixes set is well worth seeking out for the Space Cowboy’s remix of “Poker Face”.

The Fame Monster itself is a terrific culture clash of glam, decadent Goth, disco-rock and synthpop with shades of electronic industrial pervading the whole and providing us with the smash “Bad Romance”, another number one around the globe and recipient of the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album of the year. Often described as the artist facing up to the demons that usually go with fame and money this essential disc features “Telephone” (with Beyonce) and found Gaga performing in its wake with the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and for the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Arts 30th Anniversary event.

By now it’s apparent that Gaga is cross-fertilising art, fashion and music with such compulsive energy that she’s already crammed more into 18 months than most artists manage in decades. To ram that point home The Remix (2010) features collaborations with Marilyn Manson , The Pet Shop Boys, Passion Pit et al. and is another dance floor-filling epic.

For a brand new album now enter Born This Way , some of it recorded at Abbey Road, where Gaga acts as co-producer and enlists guitarist Brian May from Queen and the late Clarence Clemons from the E Street Band on saxophone. Fittingly, and spookily, the title track as a single became the 1000th number one on the Billboard chart since its inception in 1958. Lady Gaga describes this disc as like a producing a baby between Bruce Springsteen and Whitney Houston! A rock and R&B hybrid in other words with heavy does of electronica and Euro disco beats, four to the floor thumping house beats, church bells, New York City street noise, heavy metal, Germanic chanting and ear-worm songs. Another beast of a disc for sure. Everything is a strand-out here but we’re currently obsessing over “Americano” (in Spanish) with its mariachi meets techno rhythm and the mesmerising trance-like “Bloody Mary”. The Lady never holds back and that’s why her legions of fans – the Little Monsters – adore her. She puts it all out there.

Her next deconstruction disc, Born This Way: The Remix , is as diverse as its predecessor with Foster The People, The Horrors and Metronomy wizard Joseph Mount doing some of the honours. Joe’s work on “You and I’ is properly brilliant and Two Door Cinema Club’s blitz on “Electric Chapel” is equally recommended.

Born This Way: The Collection is Gaga’s third compilation: a three-disc box set with a DVD culled from the Madison Square Garden leg of the Monster Ball tour. Check out the cover too, where she’s wearing a dress made out of, er, slime, a Perspex hat and Alexander McQueen heels. As usual she is larger than life and defining the future.

So to Artpop (2013), that arrives as a neon-lit, Warholian mash up of observations on fame and sex, addiction and feminism, love and scrutiny. Another glorious thing this gives us “Applause”, “Do What U want” and “G.U.Y.” with an uber-kitsch cover from artist Jeff Koons that references Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, a significant influence on the disc. Other artists aren’t going down this road!

If critical response to Artpop  was slightly crisp, it shouldn’t detract from the excellence of the songs. “Aura”, “Venus” (featuring a sample from Sun Ra’s “Rocket Number Nine”) and the Rick Rubin-produced “Dope” resonate in her catalogue; Tim Stewart’s guitar playing is inspired and the introduction of will.i.am to the team adds more flesh to the bone.

If the third act was a spellbinder, then Cheek To Cheek  convinced a whole new crowd that it’s worth discovering this remarkable woman. Working with the immortal Tony Bennett, the pair added an American Italian tang to the songbook of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin and Jimmy Van Heusen. There are also glorious excerpts from the Duke Ellington /Billy Strayhorn school – notably “Lush Life”, “Sophisticated Lady” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)”.  An accompanying tour and concert special nailed the deal and helped Gaga win the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Album. Obviously, it went straight to No.1.

Gaga sang a medley of songs from The Sound Of Music in her best English accent at the Grammy ceremony and also took part in the 2016 David Bowie tribute. She has also launched the fragrance Eau De Gaga and a clothing range alongside Elton John which supports their various charities.

In autumn 2016 she released Joanne , a deeply personal family album with stripped-back arrangements, topping the charts again thanks to a mingling of old-school pop values and a super-smart production from the artist, alongside Mark Ronson, Jeff Bhasker, Josh Homme and others. Florence Welch guests on “Hey Girl” and Sean Lennon plays slide on “Sinner’s Prayer”, with BloodPop providing cool keys and synths. Look for the deluxe version with bonus material.

Seems like there isn’t much that Lady Gaga won’t attempt – and pull off – and having an artist of that calibre around enriches the scene immeasurably. She’s possibly the most with-it superstar of the century thus far. It’s impossible to imagine pop life without her and what did we do before she came along? Mind-boggling Lady Gaga.

Biography by Wikipedia

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, known professionally as Lady Gaga, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She is known for reinventing herself throughout her career and for her versatility in numerous areas of the entertainment industry. Gaga began performing as a teenager, singing at open mic nights and acting in school plays. She studied at Collaborative Arts Project 21, through New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, before dropping out to pursue a music career. When Def Jam Recordings canceled her contract, she worked as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing, where Akon helped her sign a joint deal with Interscope Records and his own label KonLive Distribution in 2007. She rose to prominence the following year with her debut album, the electropop record The Fame, and its chart-topping singles "Just Dance" and "Poker Face". The album was reissued as The Fame Monster (2009), which included the successful singles "Bad Romance", "Telephone" and "Alejandro".

Controversies• In 2010, at the MTV Video Music Awards, she wore a dress, boots, hats, and purse made of raw beef. She wore the dress to protest against the US Army's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy. She was criticized for the dress from several animal rights activists.

• On August 4, 2011, Rebecca Francescatti, a Chicago-based songwriter, sued Gaga for copying her song "Juda" from her album, "It's All About You." She alleged that Gaga "copied and incorporated substantial, original portions of her work."

• She has been criticized for her song "Judas," in which she is portraying her love for Judas who had betrayed Jesus.

• Several people raised eyebrows when she admitted to dancing semi-nude in bars before she was successful. She said, "I was on stage in a thong, with a fringe hanging over my ass thinking it had covered it, lighting hairsprays on fire, go-go dancing to Black Sabbath, and singing songs about oral sex"

• In 2010, her ex-boyfriend, producer, and business partner sued her for $30.5 million claiming compensation for creating her star image, framing her style, and giving her the name "Lady Gaga." They settled out of the court.

Lady Gaga Biography: How Stefani Germanotta Gave Birth To An Iconic Character

Isabel Carrasco

Lady Gaga And Her Early Years

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born in March 28, 1986 in New York City to a family of French-Canadian, English, German, Scottish, and Italian ancestry. Germanotta learned how to play the piano by ear, though later on began to take classes to polish her skills as a musician. She attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, and by the age of 14, she was already performing in small clubs in New York City. She tried to pursue acting as a career, but eventually gave up and focused primarily in music.

At 17, she got accepted in NYU at Tisch School Of The Arts and spent two years there before dropping out in order to pursue her musical career. Germanotta struggled with bullying in her childhood, early teenage years, and even college due to her looks: big nose, large forehead, and gap teeth (her college classmates even created a Facebook group named “Stefani Germanotta You Would Never Be Famous.” Joke’s on them.). Lady Gaga’s struggle with bullying would later on become important for her trademark as an artist that embraces all kinds of beauty, and as one of the most outspoken celebrities that fight against every kind of discrimination, mistreatment, or violence towards anyone. Fun fact: Though most people thought she was from Manhattan, in an interview with Vogue, Lady Gaga stated that she’s actually from Yonkers.

Lady Gaga Influences and Beginnings

Lady Gaga has stated that three of her main influences are David Bowie, Queen and Madonna. These three pop culture icons have one thing in common: theatricality (glamorous and bizarre outfits), strong and dramatic performances on stage, and vibrant and creative choreographies, all of which have been present through most of Gaga’s career. Also, Bruce Springsteen is another musical figure she grew up listening to, and his influence can be seen in some songs in Born This Way (2011) and Joanne (2016).

As a freshman in high school, she was in a small band that played covers of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Jefferson Airplane. Though Gaga has focused most of her career on making pop hits, the influence of these rock bands is undeniable. Another important element in Gaga’s creative work comes from dive bars and gay clubs. There she fell in love with the aesthetics of The Cure, the beats of the Pet Shop Boys, and the witty and catchy lyrics of Scissor Sisters. She immersed herself in the Drag Scene and eighties club culture, which was evident in her first two records and performances.

How Did Lady Gaga Get Her Name?

Many people think that Lady Gaga is a persona or a character created by Germanotta. However, she has stated that Lady Gaga is part of herself, not a character, just another name with which she as a person and artist identifies. The origins of her name come from three different stories. One states that Rob Fusari, her first producer, called her “Gaga” as her vibe, voice, and style reminded him of Queen’s “Radio Gaga.” She loved it right away, but there was something missing, so she added the “Lady” to it, since it has many connotations. Also, because as a former private school girl with a privileged upbringing, it contrasted with the New York underground scene where she was trying to begin her career.

Another version comes from Rob Fusari himself, who said that he’s the one who came up with Mother Monster’s moniker. According to him, he discovered her, and the whole name was his idea. He would later on sue Lady Gaga for $30 million USD back in 2010, once she had achieved international stardom. He dropped the lawsuit eventually.

A third version states that Gaga’s and Fusari’s stories are nothing but make believe, and that Germanotta’s stage name is the result of a creative meeting that involved executives and marketers.

Lady Gaga’s Early Career

Back in the day, right after dropping out from college, she began to perform at underground and gay bars. She used to lie to DJ’s at dive bars, saying that she was Lady Gaga’s manager, an emerging singer that had recently signed a big record deal. She’d show them her demos and said that Gaga would gladly perform at bars. Her name, music, and presence on stage began to grab the attention of many New Yorkers and eventually, she’d have her big break in 2007 when she performed at Lollapalooza. However, she didn’t perform as a solo artist, but rather along with DJ and friend Lady Starlight, who played interludes of heavy metal music during the show. The reviews of that presentation were not good, and some even called her a “trainwreck.”

Fun fact: She would later on become headliner for 2010 Lollapalooza. Coming back as a true pop diva and as headliner after the bad reviews was the clapback all her haters needed. She even wore the same outfit she used back in 2007.

Lady Gaga’s Discography And Best Singles:

“just dance” and the fame (2008).

4ecpsivqpvejjpjvanunx5s54m - lady gaga biography: how stefani germanotta gave birth to an iconic character

Though Lady Gaga had been playing some of her singles in clubs since 2007, she got her first record deal in 2008. “Just Dance” was released on April 8th, and though it didn’t make that much noise during the first weeks, it’d slowly grow in popularity. Later on, it became the third-best selling digital single of the decade with 14 million copies sold (right after Kesha’s “TiK ToK” and The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling”).

The album was “a cultural standout for an era of Little Monsters,” according to Brooklyn Neustaeter for Much Music. Gaga showed up with energy, vocals, rhythms, and visuals that were needed at a time when pop was dull and lazy. She was truthfully groundbreaking, and an inspiration for many generations and new pop stars. The album would earn her her very first Grammy. Fun fact: During “Carpool Karaoke” with James Corden, Gaga stated that she wrote the hit that launched her into international stardom in just 10 minutes. Best songs: “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” and “Paparazzi.”

“Bad Romance” and The Fame Monster (2009)

“Bad Romance” consolidated Gaga as an international sensation. At Alexander McQueen’s fashion show during Paris Fashion Week in 2009, the single came out right after an illegal leak spread all over the internet. Back in 2009, “Bad Romance” became the very first video with the most views ever on YouTube. Also, the single proved that though she is a master of catchy beats and lyrics, Lady Gaga is a composer with great creativity and pays attention detail. For example, the song has references to three well-known films by Alfred Hitchcock where there’s obsession from a main character, something of a bad romance: Psycho (1960), Vertigo (1958), and Rear Window (1954).

“I want your psycho, your vertigo shtick Want you in my rear window Baby you’re sick, I want your love”

In addition, Lady Gaga went on one of the longest tours ever by a female singer. “The Monster Ball Tour” followed “The Monster Tour:” the first began in March 2009 and ended in late September of that same year, while “The Monster Ball Tour” began in late November 2009 and ended in May 2011. It was almost 22 months in a row of touring in five continents. That same year, “Bad Romance” beat the record of Most Downloaded Act In A Year (2009). Best songs: “Bad Romance,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro.”

“Telephone” (2010)

Originally written for Britney Spears’ Circus album, “Telephone” is, without a doubt, one of the most famous videos (and short films) ever made by a pop star. With lots of references from pop culture such as Thelma and Louise and Tarantino’s Kill Bill to be a second part of her “Paparazzi” video. Gaga consolidated her status as an A-lister by bringing Beyoncé to the shooting and collaboration of the song. The video was directed by Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund and became an instant classic in pop culture.

Born This Way (2011)

She announced the name of her third studio album during her acceptance speech at the VMA’s, the night she wore the meat dress. This is probably the album where pop and rock influences are more present. Icons such as Bruce Springsteen (“The Edge Of Glory”), Madonna (“Born This Way”), and Whitney Houston (“Marry The Night”) can be perceived throughout the album. Born This Way is also the album in which showed the more activist side of her. She encouraged her fans and anyone who listened to her to be themselves, to embrace those qualities that made them different, that made them “monsters” in society and to stand out proudly. Also, “Born This Way” is one of the songs and albums for which she’d like to be remembered, she stated in an interview for Vogue in 2018. Fun fact: “Born This Way” beat the record of Fastest Selling Digital Album (2012). Best songs: “Born This Way,” “The Edge Of Glory,” and “You and I.”

Artpop (2013)

This is the fourth studio album by Lady Gaga. In it, she goes back to her pop art roots and creates beats that take her back to the club scene. Also, the visuals of the album, as well as the video clips and outfits she wore through the promotion of the album adopt and enhance the aesthetics of visual artists such as Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, and the controversial Terry Richardson. The critics weren’t thrilled with this album. However, some songs became serious jams at the clubs, specially gay and dive bars. Best songs: “G.U.Y.”, “Venus”, and “Do What U Want.”

Joanne (2016)

Joanne is Lady Gaga’s fifth studio album. Probably the most daring and personal album by Mother Monster, Joanne touches the core of the artist, and it’s a journey through some of the most personal topics of her life that have to do with loss. She speaks about the pain of losing a loved one, whether a lover or a family member, but at the same time, she offers hope and shows the listener that strength may come after the storm. The album marks an important relationship, personal and professional, with musician and producer Mark Ronson. Best songs: “Million Reasons,” “Joanne,” and “Hey Girl.”

Lady Gaga and controversy with Madonna

Though Lady Gaga has stated that she admires and is strongly influenced by Madonna, the latter hasn’t quite welcomed the flattery. Everything began when the media started to compare them, since both share similarities in their upbringing, public persona, and musical style. However, things got heated when Gaga wrote “Born This Way.” The lyrics and music resemble Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” mainly the track.

However, after an on and off fight coming from Madonna, Gaga set the record straight on her Netflix documentary, saying that she has always respected, admired, and loved Madonna, that the beef is unnecessary, and that she would love to make amends with the Queen of Pop. Eventually, the two icons moved on from the public feud, and Madonna even published a heartwarming and supportive picture when Gaga won the Oscar for Best Original Song.

Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

The 2010’s have been dominated by women in the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Madonna, Katy Perry and Beyoncé have been some of the performers that took one of the most prestigious stages in the music industry. Lady Gaga gave one of the best performances of her career during the Super Bowl Halftime Show 2017. She played some of her greatest hits and ditched the whole theatrical performances and bizarre outfits and went rather minimalist yet sparkly, as she pulled off some of her greatest vocals. She stated to the media:

“It was a milestone performance for me. I felt it really marked the decade, the first ten years of my career. It felt like the fans performed in the Super Bowl, not me. It was really for them.”

Lady Gaga: Acting, Documentary and Movies

Gaga: five foot two (2017).

This is the first documentary by and about Lady Gaga. It follows the superstar on her journey to four important projects: we see Gaga receiving the news that she’ll star in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born (2018), the recording of her most personal album so far, Joanne, the assembling and performance of her Super Bowl Halftime Show, and her American Horror Story leading role.

The title of the documentary isn’t a reference of Gaga’s height (she’s 5’ 1”), but in fact a reference to a song that’s played during the baptism of her goddaughter: “Five Foot Two Eyes Of Blue” by Art Landry.

A Star Is Born and “Shallow” (2018)

Lady Gaga finally got her big break on Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born, a remake of the film that once starred Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand in 1954 and 1976 respectively. Contrary to her performances in American Horror Story, where she was given the chance to played different characters that adjust to her theatrical nature, in A Star Is Born she found her first true challenge as an actress: to play a pop star in the making. The challenge lies on the fact that the storyline of the movie may seem quite familiar to Gaga’s own history; however, she delivered a performance and built a character that was different from herself in nature and personality. Her performance was so subtle yet electrifying that this role earned her her first Academy Award nomination as an actress in a leading role.

“Shallow,” on the other hand, gave her her first ever Oscar for Best Original song. It’s a beautiful piece that she co-wrote with friend Mark Ronson. In it, Gaga once again showed the world that she’s no pre-fabricated, lip syncing pop celebrity, but rather a true artist with capacities and abilities that are to die for.

Lady Gaga Activism and The Born This Way Foundation

She’s always been an advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community as well as those who lack representation or are mistreated. It was only a matter of time before she created her own foundation: The Born This Way Foundation looks to support those who have been bullied and abandoned, by supporting them with mental health resources. The foundation was a response after fourteen-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer killed himself due to constant bullying related to him being gay. Her foundation looks out for the wellbeing, respect, peace, and support for people who have been bullied or abused verbally, physically, or sexually. Lady Gaga, Activism, Sexual Assault, And “Till It Happens To You”

Lady Gaga recently opened up about having been sexually abused in the early stages of her career. As a survivor of sexual assault, Lady Gaga has focused part of her activism to support and help those who have been through this kind of abuse. Also, coming from her personal experience, she was invited to co-write “Till It Happens To You” with Diane Warren. This song was featured as part of the soundtrack for The Hunting Ground (2015), a documentary that deals with sexual assault in campuses in the United States.

“Till It Happens To You” won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, and it was nominated for a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song. Within the many statements she’s made regarding this subject Lady Gaga, when asked why she wore a gray suit during Elle’s “Women in Hollywood,” she stated that:

“As a sexual assault survivor by someone in the entertainment industry, as a woman who is still not brave enough to say his name, as a woman who lives with chronic pain, as a woman who was condition at a very young age to listen to what men told me to do, I decided today I wanted to take the power back. Today I wore the pants.”

Lady Gaga has been on the cover of many fashion publications like Vogue and Vanity Fair. She’s been a muse of designers such as Donatella Versace, Thierry Mugler, Michael Costello, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, and Brandon Maxwell. However, one designer stands out from the rest: the late Alexander McQueen. She collaborated with the brilliant British designer in the early stages of her career, and he helped develop the image that would launch her career to international stardom and that would become her signature style.

Lady Gaga also had iconic pieces of fashion, but none has ever compared to the shock and relevance that the Meat Dress created in fashion history back in 2010. Also, Gaga founded The Haus of Gaga, which is the personal creative team for the pop star, gathering fashion designers, visual, and plastic artists.

Lady Gaga - Biography

"i've always been famous, it's just that nobody knew.".

lady gaga profile

Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta to affluent parents in Manhattan, the star-in-the making showed her potential early on – learning to play the piano at the tender age of four, and performing at open mic nights by 14. "I was always an entertainer," she acknowledges. "I was a ham as a little girl and I'm a ham today." She attended the same private Catholic girls school as Paris and Nicky Hilton, and credits her schooling as something that helped her stand out from other blonde bombshells in the charts. "I went to a lovely school and I got an incredible education," she says. "And I actually think that my education is what really sets me apart, 'cos I'm very smart." Though close to parents Joseph and Cynthia, Stefani risked losing their approval when they went to see one of her 'shock art' shows, which she started performing aged 18 in downtown New York burlesque clubs. "My father came to see shows when I was in leather thongs and didn't understand. He couldn't look at me for a few months," she admitted. Her father inspired the song Speechless , which she wrote as a plea for him to have vital heart surgery. Now he loves her work. "When [he] saw me getting better, [he] saw that my ideas were getting stronger. Now my father cries," she says.So where did the strange Lady Gaga moniker come from? Producer Rob Fusari, who in 2010 launched legal proceedings against the star for alleged non-payment of merchandise and song royalties, claims to have helped Stefani strike upon the now-legendary stage name. "Every day, when Stef came to the studio, instead of saying hello, I would start singing Radio Ga Ga . That was her entrance song," he explained. "[Lady Gaga] was actually a glitch. I typed 'Radio Ga Ga' in a text and it did an autocorrect, so somehow 'Radio' got changed to 'Lady'. She texted me back, 'That's it.' After that day, she was Lady Gaga. She’s like, 'Don’t ever call me Stefani again'."And so a star was born. While still performing on the New York club scene, the then 19-year-old signed a deal with Sony/ATV, and began writing songs for established acts such as Britney Spears, New Kids On The Block and The Pussycat Dolls. Meanwhile, she was working on her own debut album The Fame, moving to Los Angeles and setting up the Haus of Gaga, the group that creates her eccentric costumes, performances and stage sets. She launched her assault on the charts in April 2008 with single Just Dance . It shot to number one in six countries, including the US and the UK, and transformed Lady Gaga into a tabloid favourite – her outlandish ensembles generating headlines across the globe. She followed it up with Poker Face , LoveGame , Paparazzi and Bad Romance , chalking up number ones, award nominations and critical acclaim at every turn. In 2010 she picked up two Grammy Awards and three Brit Awards to add to her already overflowing trophy cabinet. Prior to that she had scooped nine Billboard Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards and two NME Awards, among others. The same year she unveiled Telephone , her eagerly anticipated collaboration with diva Beyonce. The accompanying video, which involved scenes of lesbianism, prison and mass murder, racked up 17 million views on the internet in its first four days alone. While her career and persona drew comparisons to that of queen of pop Madonna, by 2010 it seemed the singer's relentless work schedule had left her exhausted and fragile. "I always wanted to be a star," she's said. "It's in the marrow of my bones, how I feel about music and art. I sacrifice, bleed and am sleepless for my craft in a shameless and loving way." That statement rang true when she collapsed on stage in New Zealand, removing part of her costume and lying flat on the stage to complete the show. She later blamed the breakdown on jet lag, but it left her adoring fans concerned for her wellbeing. She's the most downloaded artist in internet history and in March 2010 sold out three concerts at Madison Square Garden in under an hour. "I don't wanna be one song. I wanna be the next 25 years of pop music," she's said. At this rate, it looks like she may well get her wish.

Biography of Lady Gaga

Biography of Lady Gaga

The name of Lady Gaga is a renowned one in the world of music today. She’s known not just for her music, but other artistic expressions such as her wild and unique costumes. Many of her song lyrics are also provocative and rebellious, resounding with the young generation in a major way. Her vocal talents are also quite strong, with several huge successes under her belt including the songs ‘Born This Way’, ‘Just Dance’, and ‘Bad Romance’.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga will probably go down in history as one of the women who brought several sensitive issues to the fore, especially when it comes to gender equality. She sings and talks about breaking rules, overcoming expression, waging rebellions, and generally reimagining the world. Let’s discuss this woman and her career in more detail below:

Lady Gaga’s real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, and she hails from an Italian-American family based in New York City. She started learning music at quite an early age and even performed on stage in various clubs within New York City when she reached her teens.

Her schooling was somewhat conservative, however, as she attended the Covent of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls’ school located in Manhattan. After this, she would start studying music at New York University, more specifically the Tisch School of the Arts. However, she didn’t finish her degree at that prestigious institution and dropped out after two years to start managing her career on her own.

The Transformation

It was after dropping out of university that Germanotta started transforming into the personality that we now know as Lady Gaga. Her style became a combination of glam rock and an extraordinary kind of fashion design.

In the year 2007, Lady Gaga and Lady Starlight, a performance artist, banded tether and made a revue that they dubbed ‘The Ultimate Pop Burlesque Rockshow’. In the same year, Lady Gaga was signed on to work with Interscope Records and Akon the singer/rapper. Before this, she was also penning songs and lyrics for famous musicians like Britney Spears, the Pussycat Dolls, and Fergie. After this signing, Lady Gaga started working on her debut album, which was titled ‘The Fame’ and released to the public in 2008.

The Stage Name

The Stage Name

The stage name of ‘Lady Gaga’ was derived from ‘Radio Ga Ga’, a song by the band Queen. Her theatrical look and performance essence, however, was modeled most on performers such as David Bowie, especially the Ziggy Stardust phase. She was also inspired by Grace Slick, the New York Dolls, Freddie Mercury, etc.

It wasn’t just the name she chose, however; Lady Gaga is also a complete character that made her own unique place within the world of modern music. She combines edgy and theatrical performance with synthetic dance music, which her brand of fashion is talked about throughout the world. The overall effect is a stunning display of both visuals and sounds

In fact, when Lady Gaga produces her music, she’s also creating her own kind of fashion. Amazing wigs and space-like bodysuits are quite common for her performances. Her creative team, known as ‘Haus of Gaga’, is always at work to come out with more and more distinctive fashions as time goes by.

Rising Popularity

The first single from Lady Gaga, ‘Just Dance’, was a popular choice for most clubs in Europe as well as America. This song even topped the Billboard Pop Songs chart, while other singles from her debut album also held that honor. These were ‘Paparazzi’, ‘Poker Face’, and ‘Love Game’.

These successes have made Lady Gaga the first-ever artist to get four songs to top this particular chart in the seventeen years it’s been in existence. Needless to say, her debut album was a huge commercial success. It sold around 8 million copies globally at the close of the year 2009. With five Grammy nominations from the same album, there was no doubt that Lady Gaga was well on her way to fame and fortune.

The Grammy nominations including one for Song of the Year for ‘Poker face’ and one for Album of the Year. Lady Gaga received two Grammys that year, one for the Best Dance Recording for ‘poker face’ and one for the Best Electronic/Dance Album for ‘The Fame’.

Lady Gaga also had an opening with Sir Elton John, an event which was one of the most famous elements of the Grammys telecast in 2010. She also received three Brit Awards, which are similar to the Grammys, in February 2010. These included one award for the best album, one for the best breakthrough act, and one for the best international female artist.

The Second Album

Lady Gaga’s second album was titled ‘The Fame Monster’ and came out in the November of 2009. It was originally meant to be a bonus disc but ended up being an album in its own right. The musician’s success continued with this release, as the song ‘Bad Romance’ was instantly another major hit. There were several other singles on this album that provided to be quite popular—these include ‘Telephone’ and ‘Alejandro’. The song ‘Telephone’ featured Beyonce, just another sign of the A-lister that Lady Gaga had become.

Increasing Success

Increasing Success

As the years wore on, Lady Gaga’s career proved extremely successful. Her concert tours were sold out, and she headlined the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago as well. From performing in open mic nights, she was now playing in front of an audience numbering 20,000 at the NBC Today show.

Forbes magazine eventually listed her as being among the most powerful women in the world, while she was also among the 100 Most Influential People according to Time Magazine. She finished off 2010 by achieving the honor of being ‘Artists of the Year’ for Billboard magazine.

At the Grammy Awards in 2011, Lady Gaga made her entrance inside a huge egg. She then received the awards for the Best Pop Vocal Album for ‘The Fame Monster’ as well as Best Short Form Video for ‘Bad Romance’ and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the same.

Third Album

Third Album

The third album by this musician was ‘Born This Way’ and was released in 2011. This release has Lady Gaga going back to the earlier forms of music for her inspiration. Since she was blonde, sang provoking songs, and is a dance-pop performer, Lady Gaga has often been likened to Madonna. In fact, the first two singles on this third album were remarked upon for their similarity to the other artists’ work.

The title track of this album is one that most of us have heard, as it’s a song about self-empowerment much like Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’ from 1989. The track ‘Judas’ was a brazen mix of both religious and sexual imagery. Both of these songs were major hits before too long. There were several other popular tracks on this album as well, especially as they featured many prestigious guest appearances. These included Brian May, the guitarist of Queen, and Clarence Clemons from the E Street Band by Bruce Springsteen.

Further Work

Artpop was released in 2013, but many saw it as a commercial disappointment as compared to the first three albums. The lead single was ‘Applause’, and was quite energetic, and was a chart success in its own right.

The following year saw the release of ‘Cheek to Cheek’, which was a collaborative collection co-recorded alongside Tony Bennett. This recording came on top of Billboard 200 along with several album charts for traditional jazz and other genres. It also received a Grammy for the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

In 2016, Lady Gaga release ‘Joanne’, which didn’t perform too well until the artist herself performed it during the halftime Super Bowl in 2017. Her representation of it brought a lot of positive attention to the track.

Other Interests

Lady Gaga is known for several other projects in addition to her music. For instance, she’s occasionally appeared in several films, with the most notable example being ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ in 2014 and ‘Machete Kills’ in 2013. She played the role of a vampire countess in American Horror Story Hotel Season 5. This was from 2015 to 2016. Her performance here earned her a Golden Globe Award.

In the sixth season of the same series, Lady Gaga again performed quite well. However, she received critical acclaim and even managed to get an Oscar nomination for the lead role in the 2018 remake of ‘A Star Is Born’. She was the co-writer of several songs in that movie along with performing them with Bradley Cooper, who was the director of the movie as well as one of the costars. The movie’s lead single was ‘Shallow’, and it won an Oscar as well as two Grammy awards.

With all this success, it’s safe to say that Lady Gaga has a large and loyal fan following. She’s very outspoken on the issues she believes in especially when it comes to gay rights and same-sex marriage. She was also a speaker at the National Equality March in 2009, so it’s evident where her sympathies and interests lie.

Lady Gaga is no doubt an influential personality these days, whether one listens to her music or not. In her interviews, she says that her aim is to always give something fresh and original to her audience. With her aim to be provocative through her exhibitionist performances, this artist might not appeal to everyone. However, she’s certainly made her mark in the world of music as well as activism and acting, and is likely to continue this way for the near future at least.
