'Love Mocktail' review: This pleasant romcom strikes all the right notes

From Romeo and Juliet to Preetham and Nandini (of Mungaru Male fame) we have seen millions of couple fall, rise and die in love. So, a love story in a movie is no surprise. But what makes a movie different and watchable is the emotional quotient and the connect it has with viewers.

Darling Krishna’s Love Mocktail gets this connect right as he takes a slice out of a common man's life. The movie takes off with a middle-aged Adi (Darling Krishna) driving to the coastal region and rescuing a woman on the way. She accompanies him through the journey where he opens up about his love, life and an array of emotions he has been through over the last few years.

Adi (played by a teenager who looks very similar to Darling Krishna) has a major crush on his classmate (Reema). But like most boys, he is hesitant to approach her. But his antics like caring for her and dreaming of a future with her keep him busy. Once the bubble is burst, Adi wakes up to reality and gets into an engineering college where he meets Jo (Amruta Iyengar) who comes from a well-to-do family. Though her love is true, she has her own doubts about his ability to take care of her and provide the lifestyle she deserves. But this doesn’t keep them away from enjoying and living in the moment. After engineering, he joins an IT company and promises to fulfil her desires. But Jo, who is under pressure from her parents to marry a well-off guy, breaks up with Adi. Heartbroken, Adi meets Nidhi (Milana Nagraj), an IT employee and a down-to-earth woman, who enjoys the simple things in life. What follows is another interesting tale.

Urban love stories are what the youth look for in romcoms these days. Ideal couple goals, a dream wedding, a cutesy love story and a bundle of emotions - Love Mocktail has it all. The music and cinematography enhance this usual love story which comes with a touch of reality. There are several takeaways from the movie - teens dreaming about marrying their school crush, pressure from parents to study in candlelight, cash/currency-strapped college days, waiting for hours to get back 100 free SMS (pre-Internet era), friends who stand by like rocks in tough times, the strong bond a husband and wife share, happy moments, and more. All these small elements of life, shown through a rose-tint, put a smile on one’s face.

The movie, by and large, connects to the urban teens and youth and remains true to its genre - a romance saga. Throughout the movie, like most people, Adi looks for love. When he finds Nidhi, he is satisfied. But when she leaves him, he doesn’t look for love anymore. He has now leant to live with the bittersweet memory and all the love she has filled him with. This whole concept, freshly refurbished, stands out in the movie.

Darling Krishna has managed both acting and direction with responsibility. He has got casting, music and the storyline right; he has made the right choices. The locations too have contributed to bringing the story alive. His performance is up to the mark, especially as a doting husband. Amruta Iyengar shows promise and potential. Milana Nagaraj has a refreshing character and plays her part well. Milana must continue to pick roles like these that bring the best out of her. A few VIPs have played a guest role in the movie, including Vijeth Suvarna, a well-known biker and restaurateur.

Raghu Dixit’s music and Sri Crazy Minds’ cinematography are the biggest highlights. Raghu has inserted the right notes in every scene and the songs too bring out the feel-good factor. 'Love you Chinna' and 'Neene Yendigu' linger even after coming out of the theatre. Sri’s camera deserves special mention for showing the greenery and coastal Karnataka like never before.

Love Mocktail , served ahead of Valentine’s Day, is a pleasant romantic experience for the weekend.

A romantic comedy that takes you on a journey of life and love with familiar beats. It’s a mixed bag with some really refreshing enjoyable moments and cliched underwhelming ones. Despite being inconsistent and predictable, the well executed situational comedies keep you hooked, with an effective and emotional final 30 minutes. The cinematography and music are pleasant. A passable watch.

One of the bleakest films I have ever seen because of its inability to decide on it's tone. Story critique: (skip for mild spoilers, really mild though) Pretty much everyone who recommended this movie kept telling me that it's innovative and fresh. But the movie starts off with a clichéd guy saves girl from some pervs which crumbled all my hopes. Then, the movie jumps back to the 90s. I have never seen so much carelessness and lack of effort in filming something from the 90s. NOBODY dressed like that in the 90s. NOBODY talked like that in the 90s. NOBODY did whatever the fuck happened in that sequence in the 90s. I ended up being really mad during the whole…

Darling Krishna directs, writes and stars in this romantic drama as a hero who goes on the lookout for actual romance. Also starring Milana Nagaraj and Abhilaash. In Kannada with English subtitles.

After saving a woman, Adi recollects about his love life and informs her about all the despairs he tolerated in his expedition to locate his true love.

Darling Krishna gives a very good performance in his role as Adi, the man who acts like he is determined to find the woman of his dreams, while also painfully going through his past relationships.

Elsewhere, there are fine performances to be had from Amrutha Iyengar, Milana Nagaraj and Abhilaash in their respective parts as Jo, Nidhi and Vijay, with Jo…

Of all the pieces of crap I've seen in my life, this has to be among the most garbage tier of the lot, moreso because it was hailed as this new era defining love story, which it isn't, and I know for a fact that the hailing was a result of low self esteem of Kannada audience that even an inkling of preachy lines like "KannaDdhalli mathaDu" is enough to celebrate terrible movies.

The movie neither has any focus on what story it wants to tell nor does it have a consistent tone. It starts off as a typical Kannada movie with a fight sequence rescuing a manic pixie dream girl but apparently it needs to show off as it's…

Love Mocktail? More like Love Mixed Fruit juice.

Girish Kasaravalli said that a movie which sets out to manipulate the audience is the most dangerous film of them all. This movie does exactly that. It manipulates the audience's emotions to make itself look good, but deep down the movie is flawed, in almost all aspects.

There was a huge wave of support to this film when it released as it did not get a lot of showings (major problem for Kannada films in Karnataka) and it was hailed as a unique, refreshing film but all it did was tell the same old stories that mainstream Kannada language movies tell. A love story completely from a male's perspective, like we've not…

Very charming, if slight, romcom for most of its runtime, but...

Ending spoilers follow

HARD left into cancer-town down the stretch. I think it works for the story it's telling, and it leaves you in a pretty unique spot emotionally, but man is it not the sunny romcom it was pitched to me as.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ EMOTIONAL...

Everything in the movie - the screenplay, story, direction, background score, and the acting just shouts wow. Each of the actors has performed very well, but Krishna and Milana Nagraj take it away with a combination of acting, screen presence, beautiful chemistry. Their dedication and effort to completely blend into their character is very very appreciable and they do that seamlessly and effortlessly. My first Kannada movie :)

Love Mocktail 2 Movie Review: Krishna delivers a perfect blend of love and laughter

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).

In his debut directorial, Love Mocktail , Krishna had brought together bittersweet ingredients of life through the stories of Adi (Krishna), Aditi (Rachana Inder), and Nidhi (Milana Nagraj). The sequel, which is coming after a gap of two years, has managed to retain the flavour of the original.

The sequel begins with Vijay aka Vijju (Abilash) and Sushma (Kushi Achar) looking for their missing friend, Adi, and they land up at the police station. The two narrate to police inspector (Giri) the events that lead Adi to this situation. Using the beautiful melody, Ninadene Januma, we are shown how Adi is still mourning the death of his wife Nidhi. However, a letter changes his whole approach to life, and he decides to give a second chance to the idea of marriage. Enters match-maker Jankana, shortly known as Junkie (Sushmitha Gowda), who presents a list of profiles. However, the proposals fall flat. Call it coincidence or destiny, Adi gets to meet his crush, Sihi (Rachel David), who happens to be Viju’s relative. The story takes you back and forth across the different stages of the protagonist’s life. Will Adi accept Sihi, who is going against her parents, or is he still in love with Nidhi? When Adi finally finds his peace in the soul-stirring climax, it all feels justified.

When making a sequel, continuity is the key, and Krishna comes out largely unscathed even when he adopts an unfamiliar storyline. The romance in the film is ably balanced by the humour and sentiment elements, and Krishna structures the narrative in a rather simple way. Even with the introduction of a bunch of fresh characters like Sihi, Junkie, Renu (Shwetha), and the grandfather (Ravi Seetharam), he blends them rightly with some of the characters from the original, albeit with a fresh perspective.

While he manages to captivate moments that matter to the heart, the film also gives an important insight into a clinical problem. Scenes with Shi’s grandfather, Krishna’s conversations with Renu, are all wonderful moments that elevate the narrative. The presence of Milana as Nidhi too is as fun as it is emotional. On the performance front, Krishna effortlessly continues from where he left off in Love Mocktail, and the other actors too chip in with effective performances. Abhilash, Sushmitha, and Sushma take care of the humour parts of the film, which definitely come as a whiff of fresh air to this emotional tale.

The captivating visuals of Sri Crazyminds and Nakul Abhyankar’s soulful music make Love Mocktail 2 all the more appealing. The romcom, which ends on a sweet note, leaves the door open for a third instalment. Krishna’s Love Mocktail 2 , which is a good Valentine’s season release, not only manages to entertain but also gives heart-warming experiences of individuals at different ages.

Love Mocktail Movie Review; Adi’s Journey of Multiple Love let him Learn True Love

love mocktail movie review

Love Mocktail Movie Review; Adi’s Journey of Multiple Love let him Learn True Love. Love Mocktail (2020) Film Review, Love Mocktail is written & directed by Krishna Nagappa who’s also acted lead role in this film.

Films starts with Adhi (Krishna Nagappa) accidentally met with College girl Aditi (Rachana Inder). He started telling his love encounters of several stages to her.

Adi’s first love in his teenage seems very amusing. Director wants to narrate it comical way rather than emotional. The Second Love was happened quite unexpectedly with Joo (Amrutha Iyengar) when he was studying at college.

Here is also the narration takes place more humourous way than emotional. After their college finished when He find a job & both of them living different cities lead to arise problems.

This situation taught him something about true love & actual character of his girlfriend about money & luxurious life.

Like every love failures, this too comes to an end when there is marriage proposal for his girlfriend from her family side.

love mocktail movie review

Before the wound of his second love dry He Proposes to another girl who’s friends of friend Nidhi (Milana Nagraj) by emphasize of his close friend Vijay (Abilash)

He learned lot of things from his third relationship with Nidhi. He understands what’s actually true love from Nidhi.

If the director let the film go like this way till the end it would be an average film. What makes this film above average, will takes place after this.

They’re are few good dialogues from this film which I really like. These dialogues you might heard already some other movies. Every movie one or another way resembles other movies.

When Adi’s Second love broke up, His close friend said ‘when there’s problem in love you can solve but there’s a problem in your lover, you can’t.’

This meant lot for me. If you have problems in your love apart from both of you. Somehow you can find a way to solve and overcome from it but if one of you have issues in your love you can’t rectify it.

love mocktail movie review

Another dialogue seems more familiar, Nidhi Said ‘the times you spent with me are valuable than the amount you earn for us.’

What we need to understand from this film is when you’re really experienced or lived in true love. you’ll never fall for another girl.

Your mind will never accept another love that that’s what they’re trying to tell us in the end.

What I don’t really like in this film is some unnecessary fights which seems very amusing, doesn’t make any sense.

The background scores are good but not really impressing I witnessed more long & wide shots which looks stunning. When it comes to performance I don’t find any flaw in it. The lead characters did really.

Love Mocktail will be great entertainer if put yourself to watch.

Love Mocktail is a 2020 Indian Kannada-language romantic drama film directed and written by Krishna, and produced by himself and Milana Nagaraj. The film stars Darling Krishna and Milana Nagaraj in lead roles, while Amrutha Iyengar plays a supporting role. The movie was released on 31st January 2020 and received a lot of positive reviews from critics and audiences.

The story revolves around Adi (Darling Krishna), a young aspiring filmmaker who reminisces his past relationships and experiences with women before he finally settles down with the love of his life. The movie is set in a non-linear narrative, and it seamlessly transitions from the past to the present.

The movie begins with Adi, who has become a successful filmmaker, receiving a phone call from his ex-girlfriend, Seetha (Milana Nagaraj) after many years. The call reignites his memories of his past relationships, his first love, Rachana (Amrutha Iyengar), his fleeting romance with a girl named Simmy, and his relationship with the bold and beautiful Nidhi (Shraddha Srinath). As he flips through the pages of the book he has been writing, he takes us on a journey of his life, love, heartbreaks, friendships, and aspirations.

Through Adi's character, the movie shows the vulnerability and complexities of relationships. It questions societal norms around love and promises to break the shackles of conventional expectations from a relationship. The story also highlights the importance of communication and how it can make or break relationships.

The movie takes us through the picturesque locations of Karnataka, which serves as a perfect backdrop to the movie's emotions. The cinematography by Sri Crazymindz is spellbinding, and each frame in the movie is a visual treat. The songs in the movie are soulful and are composed by Raghu Dixit and music director Charan Raj.

The acting in Love Mocktail is top-notch, with all the actors delivering amazing performances. Darling Krishna is outstanding in his portrayal of Adi, and he brings to life his character's emotional journey. Milana Nagaraj plays her role with utmost grace and poise, and her chemistry with Krishna is electrifying. Shraddha Srinath and Amrutha Iyengar, who play Adi's love interests, bring a refreshing charm to their roles.

The movie stands out for its unique storytelling approach and the way it deals with the intricacies of relationships. It also challenges traditional gender roles and stereotypes and portrays women as confident and strong individuals who are in charge of their lives, just like Adi. Love Mocktail is a perfect blend of romance, drama, and emotions, and it will leave you with a smile on your face.

In conclusion, Love Mocktail is a must-watch movie for all the Kannada film lovers. It is a beautiful film that celebrates love, life, and relationships in its truest form. The movie will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, and you will come out of the theatre feeling uplifted and inspired.

'Love Mocktail 2' review: The magic is still intact

Follow Us :

Love Mocktail

Kannada (Theatres)

Director: Darling Krishna

Cast: Darling Krishna, Milana Nagaraj, Rachel David, Amrutha Iyengar

Rating: 3/5

'One-man show' is an often-used term in movie reviews. Milana Nagaraj's impressive show as Nidhi again in 'Love Mocktail 2' shows the power of interesting roles for female actors. Nidhi is one of the most likeable characters in Kannada films in recent times.

She is the soul of the franchise and director-protagonist Darling Krishna is smart enough to retain her, albeit with creative liberty that's acceptable. Krishna also sticks to the strengths of the much-loved 2020 romantic drama: eye-catchy locales, soothing music, and a romantic drama that grows on you.

So after losing his wife Nidhi to cancer, Aadi suffers from depression. His friends Vijay (Abhilash) and Sushma (Kushi Achar) offer him support as Aadi takes help from a psychiatrist. The duo gives Aadi a letter written by Nidhi. It makes him comfortable with the idea of second marriage.

As Aadi begins to meet his potential matches, the story reintroduces the characters of the first part. This includes Aadi's ex-girlfriend Jo (Amrutha Iyengar in a small, insignificant role). The script blows hot and cold in the first half. While a couple of jokes work well, the humour is mostly crude as the film moves aimlessly for a while.

'Love Mocktail 2' finds its rhythm with the re-entry of Nidhi. Milana Nagaraj's effort is a fine mix of understanding the character and bringing new layers to it. Krishna shows he can dig deep in writing if he wants to. The film has sensible arguments on troubled marriages, divorce, and homemakers.

Aadi is caught between moving on from Nidhi and trying to make his relationship work with Sihi (Rachel David in a promising performance). The humour finds purpose and the drama gets engaging and even delightfully mature. Krishna's lazy elegance and brooding expressions along with Nakul Abhayankar's music complement the film's poignant mood. The ending might catch you off-guard like it did in the first part.

It's good the franchise exists as Sandalwood needs more relationship dramas. Even better if they are complex.

No One Loves This More Than Adam Sandler

Portrait of Kathryn VanArendonk

At the end of Love You , Adam Sandler’s new Netflix special, he moves into a different register. After an hour of Sandlerian humor, with jokes about no-wipe poops, Botoxing your dick, and the tragedy of ruining a lovely day at Disneyland by missing the exit on the way home and yelling “Fucking cunt!”, Sandler modulates into sincerity. It’s a mode the special’s actually working in all along — it drives Sandler’s entire comedic outlook , really — but generally it stays more subterranean, present but implicit. At the end, though, the goal is to punch you in the feelings. After telling the crowd that he’s playing with a guitar his dad gave him when he was 12, Sandler launches into a song about why he does what he does. “You’re down, boy. No one around, boy. Head in your hands and pain, so much pain. How can you ever be yourself again?” he sings. “You know, it’s comedy.”

It’s almost too sweet to bear, too naked in its appeal to love and life and the healing power of a good dick joke. But Love You is not just a long windup toward a thesis about laughter being the best medicine. It is also a film directed by Josh Safdie, and it has a classic Safdie-esque drive of suspense and barely contained chaos. Throughout Love You , Sandler’s a man beset by trials, the center of a slapdash production that’s barely holding together. At every moment, the whole thing feels like it could come apart, and the combination of stress, sincerity, and inanity is what makes Love You so delightful. It’s like a train full of clowns and fake plastic poop, perpetually flirting with derailment, that ultimately pulls into a destination of love and sentimentality.

The beginning is pure Safdie. Sandler arrives at the venue in a car with a broken windshield, and from the moment the door opens, it’s an onslaught of noise, requests, and stimuli that drag Sandler in a dozen directions. Paparazzi are chasing him. The alley is full of people shouting for autographs, including a kid holding what looks like candid surveillance photos of Sandler’s real home. As he walks backstage, he realizes his lead-in act is a ventriloquist, and the crowd’s not into it. He switches sweatshirts with a random guy backstage because Sandler’s hoodie has coffee on it. Someone demands he sign 40 Happy Gilmore jerseys for a charity; he gets through about three of them before he’s swept onto the stage, barely avoiding getting tripped by a random dog as he walks downstairs and saying hello to a security worker’s hospitalized son via video call. It’s mayhem.

The opening chaos is tightly wound, carefully shot, and scripted to feel like anarchy , but as Sandler finally walks onstage, the mishaps continue, and it becomes difficult to tell how much of it Sandler knew about in advance. Three screens behind him are meant to display visual aides throughout the set, but they’re stuck on a Windows desktop background, and a voice-over on the theater-mic system informs Sandler that they’re doing their best to fix it. Sandler launches into his set, doing all he can to shake off the absurdity of that opening and the sense that this whole thing is a ramshackle mess. But on and off over the next hour, the interruptions continue. A piece of equipment falls through a hole in the stage. Two people in the audience get into a fight, and Sandler has to pause to diffuse it. At one point, the dog he almost tripped over backstage runs out into the audience, and Sandler stops while everyone greets the dog (whose name is Gary).

For comedians who reach a certain level of cultural ubiquity, fame becomes a problem to overcome in the work — an obstacle to relatability that has to be named and, ideally, punctured, or a summit to continually surmount with bigger venues and over-the-top spectacle. But this is Sandler’s (and Safdie’s) version of a special about fame, and it’s more effective and poignant than Kevin Hart doing self-deprecating jokes about his in-home wood-burning pizza oven or Ellen DeGeneres attempting relatable comedy about how much airplanes suck. Sure, you’re at the center of the stage, Love You suggests. Sure, everyone’s here to see you, and it’s an immense blessing, and ultimately you get to do this thing that you desperately love and believe in to the point that it’s almost painful. But you’re also the key figure of a huge economic and creative ecosystem, and when things go wrong, success or failure depends on you. Sandler’s just trying to keep it all moving. He’s trying to not be an asshole. And it’s worth it because people may laugh at an unnervingly detailed dream joke about an anthropomorphized birthday balloon that wants Sandler to satisfy it sexually.

Sandler’s two opening jokes both conjure the idea of fame as something to acknowledge and move past. One is about meeting a woman with a tattoo of Sandler on her calf. The other is about a friend coming up to Sandler while he’s eating grapes and telling Sandler he’s changed. “‘Get outta here, I’ve always liked grapes,’” Sandler tells the guy. But the other guy keeps insisting he doesn’t like this version of Sandler, and eventually he storms out. “So he left, and I said to the man who was feeding me the grapes, ‘What do you think? Do you think I’ve changed?’”

The rest of the hour tries to shake off that self-consciousness. There are no sweaty attempts to describe his life in falsely universal terms by focusing on parenting or marriage. When the observations are small or swerve into quotidian territory, Sandler usually turns them into songs, like one about how much time he spends doing household chores while muttering under his breath, or another full of Halloween sound effects that lists scary things in everyday life, like driving with the sun in your eyes at 3 p.m. When the jokes aren’t musical, or when he’s leaning into an especially long anecdote, they lean surrealist, as in the horny birthday balloon or another long joke about finding a genie who insists his current master is a real jerk. (Even that one, though, finds a little button about fame at the end.)

It is standard Sandler material operating in comfortable territory. It’s occasionally a little underdeveloped, often quite juvenile, and sometimes rapturously specific about the oddities of modern life. The audience is present and palpable — in one joke, for instance, Sandler picks out a guy in the audience, highlights him with a spotlight, then sings a song about the guy who makes everyone uncomfortable by flying a drone around the beach. The audience seems game when, for no particular reason, Sandler brings out his friend Rob Schneider as an Elvis impersonator, singing “It’s Now or Never.”

But Sandler is still a man swimming upstream, battling to stay on track despite all the little things that keep going wrong, and it communicates a central idea that’s difficult to pull off in a way that feels authentic in a special, especially for someone with Sandler’s level of fame. This is not a glamorous job. This is not always fun. It’s often surreal in very small, unexpected ways, like when Gary strolls out onstage. And it’s also important , which Sandler conveys with absolute earnestness in his final song. As he lays out his thesis, this idea that comedy is the counterbalance to all of the hardest things in life, the screens behind him that’ve failed the entire time finally start working, playing a montage of scenes of everything from Monty Python and the Holy Grail to SNL to Abbott and Costello to Bridesmaids . “You’re laughing so hard as you feel the pain pass / All because Ace Ventura just talked with his ass / Yeah, the comedy,” he sings. Eventually the song becomes a list of gratitude, thanking dozens of Sandler’s heroes, colleagues and friends, and ending with shoutouts to friends who’ve died, including Chris Farley and Norm Macdonald.

Ultimately, Love You works as well as it does because it embraces the opportunity of taping a special to do something more than just record a Sandler show. His investment in sentiment pays off bigger and better, because the entire performance has also been a joke on him. He’s so committed to the bit that he’s willing to be the prank victim at his own show. Like any great special, Love You is a document of what’s happening inside Sandler’s head, but Safdie’s direction and the framing conceit turn it into a portrait of him, seen from the outside. He’s put upon and exhausted, and he loves this job with a clarity that’s almost blinding.

Anaïs in Love

love mocktail movie review

“Her irresistible charm saves her.” This is how Anaïs’ father sums up his madcap daughter. The weird thing is he’s right. Although Anaïs is constantly running late, over-sharing with strangers, running roughshod over other peoples’ schedules/hearts/minds, she is somehow so charming and adorable that not only do these inconvenienced people not mind, they fall under her spell, too. They forgive her, they cut her slack, they follow her around, wanting to be kept waiting again. “Anaïs In Love,” the directorial debut of actress Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet , manages to make this make sense (mostly), primarily because of the humorous and alert lead performance from Anaïs Demoustier .

Anaïs spends half the movie racing at breakneck speed down sidewalks, up stairs, across fields, down hallways, into and out of elevators (she has severe claustrophobia), always half an hour late for everything (and sometimes she doesn’t show up at all). She barely apologizes for keeping people waiting. She just breezes through, chattering non-stop. No one can get a word in, not even the obviously irritated landlady who wants to know why Anaïs is two months late with the rent. Anaïs is so confident about her “charms” that other people’s obvious displeasure don’t seem to bother her. She talks her way out of everything.

How does one play such a character without seeming like an unredeemable narcissist? Demoustier somehow pulls it off. She is natural and open. She does not push the character as an idea or a concept, and this is crucial because Anaïs, as the character is written, is a “type,” the dreaded “manic pixie dream girl” who flits through lives making people stop and smell the roses, learn to love, etc. But Demoustier doesn’t play her that way. Besides, manic pixie dream girls are usually seen through the eyes of the male characters who adore them. This story is told from Anaïs’ point of view.

The movie opens with Anaïs’ life in shambles. Her boyfriend Raoul ( Christophe Montenez ) has moved out, and Anaïs worries out loud constantly—to people who know her, people who don’t—that she might not be capable of loving someone. Raoul’s nickname for her is, appropriately, “Big Tractor,” and he says to her at one point: “You don’t realize what human interaction is.” He’s not wrong! Anaïs’ mother ( Anne Canovas ) has cancer, and it’s bad. Anaïs’ dissertation—on passion in 17th-century literature—is at a total standstill. It’s hard to picture Anaïs going to the library, sitting quietly, reading a book, taking notes. Her thesis mentor gives her organizational tasks, and then is (understandably) annoyed when Anaïs blows it all off.

At a party one night, she meets Daniel ( Denis Podalydès ), a man old enough to be her father, and married to a successful writer. The two start an affair, with very little fanfare (or feelings of guilt) but it’s an affair with some quirks. The sex (by the looks of it, anyway) isn’t great. In fact, there’s barely any passion at all. The situation gets more complicated (and French) when Anaïs sees a televised interview with Daniel’s wife Emilie (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi). Anaïs reads Emilie’s books, is drawn to the writing, and so she takes the next natural step: she launches a mild stalking campaign. Everywhere Emilie looks, there is Anaïs: at book readings, on the sidewalk, at a literary conference (where Anaïs has to do odd jobs around the property in order to be allowed to even attend).

There are some similarities in all of this to Joachim Trier’s “ The Worst Person in the World ” (particularly the women’s hairstyles, as well as all that running), but the mood and tone is entirely different, less meditative, less mournful. Anaïs never seems to be at risk of losing herself, of becoming trapped, of finding herself miserable and unfulfilled. It’s hard to picture her feeling bad about anything. This is a major drawback. A lead character who never feels bad about anything who never apologizes, who expects forgiveness, is … a “Big Tractor” indeed. The film is fairly low-stakes, which is another issue. Demoustier’s behavior is at times maddening, yes, but it’s always interesting to watch. “Anaïs In Love” doesn’t view Anaïs as either an inspirational figure to emulate or a problem that needs solving. She is who she is. And she’s already out the door, clattering down the stairs, calling out her goodbyes.

Now playing in theaters and available on demand.
