During my last summer vacations, we all suggested different places for road trip and finally decided to go to Dalhousie. Dalhousie is around ten hours away from our place so we decided to go for a night journey. We booked a six-seater cab to accommodate our family of five – Me, my mother, father, brother and sister.

My father chose not to drive as it was a night journey and he wanted to wake up fresh the next morning. The driver who accompanied us was not only skilled at driving in hilly areas but was also aware about the various site-seeing places in Dalhousie as he had been there few times.

We played antakshari and dumb charades and chatted with each other until late night. Next morning, we woke up as the driver stopped the car and announced we have reached our destination. The place was beautiful and the weather was amazing.

Exploring Dalhousie

Our rooms were cosy and comfortable and the view outside was mesmerizing. I could see the beautiful mountains and greenery all around. We had our breakfast, got ready and went for site-seeing. Punch Pula was the first tourist attraction we visited. It was a beautiful waterfall that offered a scenic view. We roamed around the place for some time and sat there enjoying the beauty of the nature.

Next, we went to Dainkund Peak. The view from the peak was just amazing. We then headed back to our hotel. We had dinner on the way and dosed off to sleep almost as soon as we reached our room as it had been an extremely tiring day.

Over the next two days, we saw several breathtaking places including Chamera Lake, Sach Pass, St. John’s Church, Bara Patthar Temple and Khajjar Lake. The experience was awesome. Dalhousie is a beautiful place that encompasses several spectacular tourist attractions. The best part is that it is tranquil unlike many other hill stations that are overcrowded most of the times.

We played antakshari, cracked jokes and laughed to make the most of this time together. Soon, we were tired and dosed off to sleep. As I woke up in the morning, I saw the breathtaking view of mountains from the window. We were about to reach our destination. I opened the window to feel the fresh air on my face. It was a great start of the day.

The bus stopped at a road side dhaba where we freshened up and had breakfast. We had piping hot Maggi along with a cup of coffee for breakfast. After having this delicious food we headed further.

Site-Seeing at Manali

After relaxing for a while in the hotel, we got dressed and headed to the Hidimba Temple which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Manali. The temple was beautiful and serene. After spending some time there we went to the mall road. We spent our evening roaming on the mall road viewing the beauty of the place.

Next day, we went to Rohtang pass which was located at a great height. The place was colder than Manali and we had our jackets on even in the month of June. The cool breeze, fresh air and scenic view of the place were a perfect recipe for rejuvenation.

The next day we shopped at the local market. I bought souvenirs for friends and family. I also brought a shawl for my mother, a watch for my sister and a woollen cap for my father. We had our dinner at a popular restaurant in Manali and then headed back home. We sat with our close pals in the bus and chatted until late at night before we dosed off to sleep.

We came back with several memories that we shall cherish forever. I look forward to many more such road trips with friends.

We started from our place at around 5 in the morning and reached Jaipur at around 2 in the afternoon. We stopped by at two places during our journey. Our first halt was at a road side dhaba which is famous for its scrumptious paranthas. We relished the paranthas with curd. We then relaxed for a while and started our journey further. Next, we stopped to have tea and stretch a bit after sitting for hours in the car.

Site Seeing in Jaipur

The weather in Jaipur was pleasant. We checked into our hotel, rested for some time and then set out for site seeing. On the first day, we saw Jal Mahal and Hawa Mahal. I was mesmerized looking at the beauty of these edifices. After this long tiring day, the scrumptious Rajasthani thali served to us for dinner was just what we needed.

The next day, we went to Nahargarh Fort. The fort was located at a hill and it took a while to reach there. The fort was spectacular and so was the view from there. Next, we went to Amer Fort which was equally beautiful. Having spent the evening in and around Amer Fort, we headed to a famous restaurant to have our dinner. I simply love Rajasthani food and the one served at this restaurant was just outstanding.

On the third day of the trip, we decided to explore the local market. Jaipur is famous for its beautiful handicraft items, bandhani suits and Jaipuri print bed sheets. There is so much to shop from. We roamed around the market eating the delicious street food and indulging in a lot of shopping. We went back to the hotel and had our dinner in the room as we had been extremely exhausted.

Visit to Chokhi Dhani

On the fourth day (which was the last day of the trip), we decided to visit Chokhi Dhani which is a beautiful place that gives a true picture of the Rajasthani culture. The place hosts numerous cultural events, displays Rajasthani art and serves scrumptious Rajasthani food. From camel rides to puppet shows, from village games to Rajasthani folk dances – this place gives the feeling of being in the heart of Rajasthan.

The place is beautifully decorated and looks all the more spectacular when it is all lit up at night. We roamed around the place, indulged in various activities and enjoyed ourselves to the chore. We also bought sovereigns from this place. After spending around four-five hours at this place, we headed back to Delhi. We took just one halt on our way back.

This was one of the best road trips with my family. I enjoyed every bit of it. Jaipur is a beautiful place that encompasses architectural marvels. The food served there is equally amazing. The company of my family members made it all the more special. We came back with numerous beautiful memories that I will cherish forever. I wish to visit this place again.

Don’t you? For me traveling opens my mind to new ideas, new adventures and lets me learn. I like to learn as well and when I travel I get to learn about different people, their cultures and their way of thinking. 

When I was young I was able to travel across Canada. Even in a western country, there are different cultures and I got to see Ottawa and Montreal up close. The French Canadians are not the same as the Western Canadian and my experience was fabulous. 

Going to the east was not as exciting as traveling through the Rocky Mountains though. The grandeur and beauty of that mountain range defy description. Snow-capped almost all year round, these mountains stood tall and majestic. 

They even have a glacier in their midst that is something to behold. Lake Louise stands out as well with its multi-colored water and mountain surroundings. But as good as those trips were, they do not compare to when I left Canada and traveled to Asia for the first time. 

Here I was traveling to a completely different culture than I had experienced as a child. My itinerary was taking me to the land of the Morning Calm and was known in earlier days as the hermit kingdom. 

This was going to be a new experience for me. The plane took off going in a northerly direction as airlines like to fly close to land. This is a good policy as the passengers get to see the grand western mountains from a new angle. 

Up to and past Mt. Mckinley the snow-covered peaks glistened under the sun’s rays… That look was made better by the contrasting dark green colors of the forests that make their home throughout the mountains. 

Then as we were flying over the north Pacific ocean the realization set in that I was in for an adventure. The bright blue waters of the Pacific made the Japanese islands look like little diamonds set on a velvet cloth. 

A few minutes later we were passing over the eastern coastline of Korea, with its tall waves beating against the rocky shores. It was too late to turn back. We were almost to our destination, Seoul. 

After we had landed and I found my way to my hotel. The great thing about Korea is that it has signed both in English and Korean making it easy for foreigners to navigate to their destinations without hassle. 

The taxi drivers were polite and very helpful, plus they did not try to rip me off. They drove me directly to my hotel and helped me get inside. In looking out my hotel window I could see what made Seoul so attractive. It was a modern city filled with history. 

A history the Korean people were proud of. That pride was found in the lack of an entry fee to their wonderful museums. Even their ancient palaces were not that expensive to enter. Seoul. Has at least 3 of them within its borders. 

The main palace, Geongbokgung, is backed by Seoul’s mountains giving it a picture-perfect quality that is astounding. It took some time to see it all. After I left the palace I headed to the first national treasure of Korea, Nam Dae Mun or the southern gate. 

It stood tall and proud and it would be the entrance you would come through if you were traveling to Seoul from the south. The wide Han River is quietly weaved its way through the city supply the residents with pure mountain fresh water every day. 

There is too much to list here that both Seoul and Korea have to offer but it was a trip of a lifetime and one I will always remember. It wasn’t a vacation nor an adventure. It was a true travel experience.

The Value of a Road Trip

Since becoming a dad, I’ve taken my family on some incredible vacations—Disneyland, Disney World, Universal Studios, Washington, D.C., and even a Caribbean cruise.

Each trip was packed with unforgettable experiences, and we cherished every moment.

Yet, when I asked my kids to recall their favorite vacations, they all pointed to the road trips we’ve taken together.

I’ve always had a love for road trips.

As a child, my family couldn’t afford the grand vacations that my friends enjoyed, so we made the most of what we had with trips to Louisiana to visit family.

I didn’t mind the six-hour drive because it felt like an adventure. We’d pass through farmlands and small towns, each mile revealing a world so different from the urban landscape I was used to.

Stopping at unique restaurants along the way was a treat, especially when I could hear the charming Cajun accents of the servers and attempt to mimic them as soon as we got back in the car.

Yet, the true magic lay in the quiet moments spent with my mother.

As a single mom, she was often busy with work or caring for my sister and me.

But on those road trips, we could press pause on the chaos of life, sharing stories and laughter for hours on end.

Those precious moments of connection were what I craved, and it turns out my kids feel the same way.

When we embarked on our first major road trip—a 20-hour journey from Houston to Key West—I was excited yet apprehensive.

To prepare, I installed a DVD player in the minivan and loaded it with movies to keep my kids entertained during the long drive.

At the time, they were just 1, 5, and 8 years old, and I worried that the full day in the car might be overwhelming.

On departure day, everything was going smoothly until my daughter piped up from the backseat,.

“Daddy, something’s wrong with the movie,” she said.

I asked her what was happening, and she explained that it had stopped playing. I instructed her to fiddle with the controls, but to no avail.

“I’ll pull over at the next exit,” I said, hoping to troubleshoot the issue.

We parked at a McDonald’s, and as I inspected the DVD player, it became clear that there was nothing I could do to fix it.

“Bad news, honey,” I told my wife. “The DVD player is broken.”

Concern washed over her face; we were only two hours into a 20-hour trip, and the kids had no form of entertainment.

My wife and I considered detouring to an electronics store, but then I recalled those childhood road trips with my mom—there were no DVD players back then.

“Let’s keep going,” I suggested. “When we get to Key West, we can get a new one.”

My family looked disappointed, but I reassured them, “Don’t worry; everything will be okay.”

And guess what? Everything turned out better than okay.

On that long stretch of highway to Key West, we talked, laughed, and sang songs.

We played travel games like “I Spy” and “Spot the License Plate,” and my kids learned geography as we drove through different states.

Each mile brought us closer together, and the absence of a screen opened the door to connection and conversation.

When we finally arrived in Key West, everyone was exhausted, but my kids were eager to explore.

Hotels have a certain allure for them—there’s something magical about staying in a new place, even if it’s just a few miles from home.

We spent three glorious days exploring the island, indulging in new restaurants, and soaking up the sun on the beach.

My daughter and I collected seashells while my 5-year-old son splashed in the water, and my 1-year-old cautiously experimented with the sand.

The highlight of the trip came unexpectedly.

While relaxing in our hotel room, my youngest pulled himself up on the couch, let go, and took his first steps. We all erupted in cheers, and his laughter filled the room, echoing the joy of that moment.

On our last day in Key West, I mentioned to my wife that I was going to find an electronics store to get a new DVD player installed.

She paused, then said, “Nah, we’re good.”

The journey home was enriched by the stories we shared, reminiscing about our adventures in Key West, making it perhaps the best 20 hours of my life.

Now, that my kids are older, those moments of connection don’t come as easily.
