MIDS Doctoral Programme

The Ph.D. programme has been an integral part of the academic activities of the Institute. The Institute has a full-time Ph.D. programme for students as well as teaching scholars. Given the academic focus, freedom, and flexibility for working in broad areas of development and social sciences, the Institute has won recognition for maintaining quality, rigour, and originality in scholarly works published in various forms. The ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowships have been the major source of financial support for most of the scholars admitted to the programme. Due to the change in the tenure of ICSSR fellowship, from three to two years and the withdrawal of institutional doctoral scholarships, the institute faces challenges in supporting research scholars. The Elizabeth Adiseshiah Fellowship offered by the Malcolm & Elizabeth Adiseshiah (M&EA) Trust provides support for two scholars at any point in time. Given the limited financial support available, the institute will give preference to scholars with UGC Junior Research Fellowships or financial support from other agencies to enroll in its full-time Ph.D. programme.

University Affiliation and Guidelines

Admission to the Ph.D. programme at the University of Madras can be made two times a year-i.e., in January and July. The admission portal shall remain open for a specified period as notified by the University (June 1-30 and December 1-31).

The Institute may set additional rules to ensure quality and transparency in the process of admission. The Institute reserves the right to update the guidelines for shortlisting the applications, evaluating the research proposal, written test, interview, and final selection of the candidates.

Full-Time Ph.D. Programme: Scholarships

Icssr doctoral fellowship.

ICSSR is providing Doctoral Fellowships under its three 'Centrally-Administered Doctoral Fellowship Schemes' and 'Institutional Doctoral Fellowship Scheme' in accordance with the prescribed guidelines. In the case of Centrally-Administered schemes, the fellowships are awarded and monitored directly by ICSSR and the concerned doctoral fellows are affiliated with a university or college. Under the Institutional Fellowship Scheme, the doctoral fellows are affiliated with and monitored by an ICSSR sponsored / recognized research institute. At present, ICSSR provides Rs. 20,000 monthly fellowship for two-year period and annual contingency of Rs. 20,000 for the selected candidates.

The guidelines, eligibility, procedure of application and selection, duration, and other guidelines are available on the ICSSR website.

Candidates may note that applications for the ICSSR Doctoral Fellowships can be made only after the candidates (a) take admission in MIDS, (b) get admission and confirmed registration in the University of Madras, and (c) get the approval of the candidate's Doctoral Committee by the university. Fellowships may be granted by ICSSR as per conditions stipulated by ICSSR from time to time. Such decisions solely rest with ICSSR and that may include rejection as well. The Elizabeth Adiseshiah Ph.D. Fellowship:

The Malcolm & Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust provides financial support for scholars who joined institute's PhD programme. The institute nominate the candidate for M&EA fellowship. Broadly, value of the fellowship/contingency grant and duration of the fellowship will be at par with ICSSR doctoral fellowship

Part-Time Ph.D.

MIDS also admits part-time Ph.D. scholars and follows the guidelines of the University of Madras. Apart from meeting the essential requirements for Ph.D. admission, part-time Ph.D. scholars are expected to meet additional criteria set by the University of Madras on the candidate's professional background, attendance, duration of the programme, etc. Candidates are advised to follow the university website for the latest updates and existing rules and regulations for part-time Ph.D. before applying. In academic matters, MIDS does not distinguish between full-time and part-time students.

Ph.D. Course Work

The MIDS Ph.D. programme is subject to the rules and regulations of the University of Madras. While MIDS will extend all possible support, the scholars and respective supervisors must take the responsibility of meeting various requirements of the university concerning the Ph.D. programme. Students admitted to the MIDS Ph.D. programme should complete the coursework and mandatory credit requirements for their registration with the University of Madras.

Hostel/Accomodation Facility

Scholars may note that there is no hostel facility available on the MIDS campus and the Institute does not take responsibility for arranging accommodation for the Ph.D. students. Scholars are expected to make boarding arrangements of their own for the entire duration of the Ph.D. programme.

The regulation relating to admission/registration, the conduct of the programmes, formation of Doctoral. Committee, examinations, and the award of the degree are framed by the University of Madras and LIBA will follow the same.

Candidates who have completed the following pattern of Study 10+2+3+2 (or) 11+1+3+2 are eligible for admission to P h . D . Programme. The Candidate should have obtained a master’s degree with 55% marks in the qualifying examination (PG Degree). For SC/ST candidates and for candidates who have completed the PG degree before 1991, the minimum can be only 50% for admission to the Ph.D. Programme.

Madras University PG Admission 2024

Madras University offers several courses in the PG curriculum in several disciplines. All the courses are offered as full-time regular courses. The duration of each PG course is 2 years but the MCA course requires 3 years to complete. To qualify the eligible criteria, students must complete a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university with the minimum required percentage. 

Students who are willing to join Madras University for a professional course like MBA , MCA or M.Tech, need to appear in TANCET and obtain qualified marks which should meet or exceed the cutoff percentile demanded by the university. For other conventional courses, the university conducts entrance tests & candidates must secure valid marks to be selected.

• For the traditional M.A , M.Com, M.Sc, LLM courses students are required to complete B.A, B.Com, B.Sc, LLB courses to be eligible. 
• Being eligible for an M.Tech course, students should have passed M.A/M.Sc with Geography or 10+2 with Mathematics/ Statistics or B.E course in Civil Engineering or any Information Technology related fields from a recognised university. 
• For other courses like MBA , MCA, M.Ed, M.Lib.Sc courses, applicants need to have a graduation degree in any discipline to be eligible. 
• For an Executive MBA course, candidates should have graduated with 55% marks in aggregate in any stream. 
• To be eligible for an MSW course, students must pass a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university & together with the right aptitude for the Social work profession will be eligible for applying for the course. 

Madras University PG Selection Criteria

• For M.A, M.Com, M.Sc, M.Ed courses the selection will be done on the basis of qualified scores secured in the entrance tests conducted by the university.
• For M.Lib.sc, LLM, MSW courses admission will be made based on merit secured in the last qualifying examination. 
• For MBA, MCA courses the selection will be done based on performance in TANCET & students whose scores have exceeded the cutoff percentile demanded by the university.

Madras University offers some courses at Doctoral programs in a handful of specialisations. Some of the courses which are offered by the university at the research level, PhD, M.Phil & MD . All the courses are offered in regular, campus base mode, in part-time & full time both modes. The duration of PhD, MD & M.Phil courses is respectively 3 years, 2 years and 1 year. The minimum eligibility to pursue a doctoral program from Madras University is to have 60% marks in aggregate at the Master’s degree in the concerned subject from a recognised university. I applied for 2, 3 government colleges like queen Mary ethiraj. Through online and they call me for counselling ,i cant attend that because the distance is the problem, so i can't able to go for that government colleges and this college near to me so, i joined this college.

I didnt applied for other colleges because MSSW is a well known brand for its course in Human resource management, along with this they provide good number of placements and networking opportunities The admission procedures are like initially you have to complete the aptitide test ,from that students will be filtered for interview and finally filtering with over all marks and academics along with these scores

Loyola’s ground reality

• It’s a Big campus, you can almost call it a University. The campus has all arts & science, commerce, Engineering and MBA programs. It is a campus which is in the heart of the city, yet it is peaceful because of the nature that surrounds it.
• Diversity people come from various backgrounds and places, you won't find a similarity among most of the college mates as there are people coming from all around the world.
• Not a Coeducational the number of girls are low because it’s primarily known as a boys college, the girls usually can and have the option to join Viscom,Zoology etc and that too they can’t opt for shift 2 in some of these courses.
• Old syllabus the college provides you with a old syllabus that is not updated.

The admission process was easy, I got in through credit score, meaning I paid no donation of any kind. They asked for the basic details and 10th and 12th marks for admission, nothing extra. I personally applied to SNU delhi and Chennai, where I got both (Bcom) and also I applied for MCC also where I got the Econ program. I settled for Loyola because of what the brand value was, people around me used to praise It like nothing and also it is considered the best college in chennai. So being a young student i went on to join this college.

• I had liked the faculty member while taking classes it was understandable and they help us to study well.
• I had liked the course that i have taken i guess it will help to boost up the carer in future.
• I don't liked canteen. There is no enough foods and varieties to eats
• Sudden exams that and all I don't likes.

I had choosen this college because of my school teacher she had a said that you and all how will get the seat from this college this was an a largest reputed one she said. So i got angry and keep courage to join this college and said my teacher that i have been join in the college and iam the one of the ethirajian now. I thank her to makes me to join this college. I have applied in ethiraj and a siet college but i have preferred to join this college.

Great bca in bad college

• I liked the college when the college is giving more unwanted holidays
• I liked the college when college is open until 10 30 the actual time is 9 30
• The college has only have few programs the programe also not good.
• The college doesn't have any internship or industries visit.

I joined this college because of late admission. This college doesn't have any eligibility. They don't see the results of the exams. They don't encourage or motivate that. The admission process is very easy to do. The admission is good. Don't have any specific cutoff.

My college life = My happy pill

• The infrastructure is being developing and it's too much neat and clean
• Hygiene level is maintained in everything
• The restrooms doesn't have proper access to water and no other issues

I didn't choose any other college as this college is nearby and even my family hasn't allowed me to choose any other college due to the society No I didn't get rejection from any other college The eligibility for this course was 70% and above. No exams are taken and cutoff is only above 70%

My experience in SDNB Vaishnav College

• Has better infrastructure and has best auditorium in it.
• Has big and best library with lots of book collection.
• Junior faculties are not so good and need some experience.
• Not so good canteen facilities and need more improvement.

I already apply to Madras Christian College but I didn't choose it because the college here has very much different variety of courses available in b.com. Here we have BCom in ca, cs, etc. Admission process are taken place through online and we would be receiving selection list in the official website and we are required to meet in person and submit our original documents after the admission process had been completed and fees has been paid.

Day in Madras christian college

• Best staffs, as they have better experience in same campus as students. And very good attendance system as hour based attendance.
• History of MCC. As it has a very rich history and everything about it would be fascinating. Mcc has one of the best environment as we could locate deer amd monkeys everywhere.
• Strict tradition of hall. As followers are forced to follow a lots of rules. But they really have a great future in it, as they are disciplined in it. And we could unfollow it if we are not ok with the rules.
• Not so strict faculty. No rules in college for students would be irritating sometime.

I applied and selected in LPU. But i chose this because of the near location and I dreamed to study Archaeology and this is the only college had Archaeology for UG. Admission procedure are online based amd have to come in person for verification if we are selected. Mail would be received from college for selection. For general category 95% is required and sc st has some negotiation.

A good college needs good students

• Experienced a good faculty service for the students and I've also developed valuable skills through this college
• They provided many internship options and also gave permission and encouraged us to participate in many competitions
• Faced many challenges as the college students are very competitive
• There are limited availability of facilities for lab

I chose this college because of its strong connection with industry and our college also have good placement records compared with other colleges. I've applied for many more colleges like Ethiraj , MCC , but after all the colleges I've searched for , I found this college more worthy. Our college is mostly prefered by many good schools also , the admission process in our college is done in the basis of marks and the teachers will respond immediately

First you have to login using Email ID and Mobile number on the official website of Madras University. Then you need to fill in the applciation form of re admission. Upload all the required documents and scanned copies. 

The University of Madras has uploaded the guidelines on how to register, fill up and submit your Ph.D applicaiton form on its official website. Once you have filled up your application form, you will be redirected to the payment page. Without making the payment your registration status will remain incomplete.

The university has not released the dates for the admission entrance tests. The university has extended the registration process till 31 July 2022. The new entrance examination date will be released shortly. However, admission to M.Sc courses is based on the merit of the qualifying examination passed.
