An essay is a document written from the author’s point of view to convey a personal opinion. Essays often tie together multiple sources of information to support the central argument that the author is making. Typically structured in paragraphs without headings, essays are a very common method of academic assessment used in schools and universities.

Tufte Essay

This template uses the Tufte class to create an elegant layout for writing essays or other long-form texts. This class features a somewhat controversial wide margin on the right side of each page. The template starts with a clear title and summary then shows how a large amount of text (typical in an essay) looks in the layout. Pages 2 and on show numerous examples of common essay elements including: sectioning, referencing, figures and tables, typography options and a bibliography. Read the text and margin notes carefully as these include examples and instructions for how to implement these various elements in your own essay.

This essay template is best used for literature essays containing mostly text. This is supported by a thin single column layout with clear unnumbered section titles to increase readability. The template contains an abstract, keywords and references, which makes it suitable for college/university essays but these elements can be easily removed for a simpler high school essay. Further examples of common essay components are included: referencing using a bibliography, an inline figure, a table and lists.

LaTeX allows users to create a near-endless variety of documents, so it's impossible to give anything like a comprehensive introduction to writing in LaTeX. However, nearly all LaTeX documents follow the same, fairly simple structure:

Basic LaTeX Document Structure

All LaTeX documents are divided into two basic sections

• The preamble , which provides its visual style and structure
• The body , which provides the content

1. Preamble

The preamble specifies the class of document being written (e.g., article, book, slides, etc.), any packages required, and any options for the document class and packages:

The body directly follows the last line of the preamble. Its general format is fairly simple, with all of the document's visible content written between two lines of code which specify the beginning and end of the document's body:

LaTeX Editors

Writing a LaTeX document can either be done in a general text editor or in a LaTeX-specific editor. Below are just a few examples of what's available.

General Text Editors

• Sublime Text Editor A free text editor that includes .tex formatting.
• Notepad++ A free text editor that includes .tex formatting.
• TeXmaker A free, cross-platform TeX/LaTeX editor and compiler.
• TeXworks A free, cross-platform TeX/LaTeX editor and compiler; included in Windows installations of MiKTeX and TeX Live.

Browser-Based LaTeX

Because of the sheer volume of packages available for LaTeX and difficulties translating them to an HTML environment, browser-based options are less flexible but more accessible, with the added benefit that they allow collaboration on documents.

This is my LaTeX Essay Template. It is a best-in-class LuaLaTeX template for writing essays, dissertations, documents, and papers in the academic humanities. It includes a custom LaTeX documentclass called humanize , which is based off the article class, and contains all of the custom styling and configuration.

This template uses a number of advanced LaTeX features.

This git repository is set as a template. Simply clone the template, and begin. The root document is located at ./latex/paper.tex . The documentclass , \Title , \Author , and \Date fields can be modified there.

To compile the document, simply run make :

Documentation

This template is broadly organized into two directories. sections contain the body of the text. figures contains additional templates for figures, diagrams, and graphs.

The body of the text is meant to be included in the ./latex/sections directory. Begin writing in ./latex/sections/body.tex , and add additional sections within that directory (e.g. ./latex/sections/introduction.tex ).

Metadata for the PDF must be configured in the ./latex/paper.xmpdata file. This file is read by the pdfx package, and information within is used to generate a valid, standard-conformant PDF/A-3u document.

The header, footer, and additional packages can be configured in ./latex/configurations.tex . Biblatex, as well as a set of commonly used packages for mathematics and sciences are included as comments.

Dependencies

This template depends on the following programs:

• GNU Make: Used for the makefile for compiling the PDF document
• Latexmk: Tool used with Make to run LaTeX for the correct number of runs.
• LuaLaTeX: The default typesetting engine used.
• Microtype version >= 3.0 . This template uses advanced protrusion features only available in recent versions of microtype.

Essay Template ITMO Eng

This is an English-language template for students' essays and synopses based on GOST 7.32-2017. Originally prepared in accordance with the recommendations from the academic and teaching staff of ITMO University for students of technical and natural sciences.

The template is created for XeLaTeX compiler, and the bibliography is assembled by biber. The template works well in Overleaf, and it has been also tested on Windows 11 in combination MikTeX + TeXstudio.
