At its recent technology focused ‘2018 OPPO Technology Exhibition’ held in Shenzhen, OPPO’s CEO Tony Chen has announced the company’s commitment in investing RMB 10 Billion in R&D across several category of technologies in 2019.

This amount is a 150% year-on-year increase in R&D dollar, which OPPO says will only continue to increase every year. The RMB 10 Billion will be used to enhance the company’s technological capabilities in 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and also Internet of Things (IoT).

OPPO made the world’s first WeChat video call using a 5G smartphone.

With mobile communication devices being a large part of OPPO’s business, 5G is an area where it is focusing on relentlessly. “5G is a trend OPPO must embrace. In addition to striving to become the first manufacturer to launch 5G smartphones, OPPO’s exploration of application opportunities in the 5G+ era will ultimately determine the value of 5G,” said Tony Chen.

AI technologies will also be applied to a wide range of OPPO’s applications including photography, facial recognition and fingerprint identification to give users a more personalised experience. “The benefits brought about by AI technologies will truly be realized in the 5G era. For OPPO, AI is both a capability and a mindset, and our development prospects for AI are very broad,” Chen said.

With the introduction of 5G and the widespread adoption of AI, IoT devices will help to integrate technology, art and humanity into our homes in the form of IoT devices.

OPPO has always attached great importance to R&D in leading-edge technology and has a design in place for the future based on its deep insights. Serving as a platform for internal stakeholders to exchange ideas and technology, the 2-day OPPO Technology Exhibition included four major sessions – AI, Big Data, Cloud + IoT and 5G – and 12 exhibition zones covering more than 80 innovative projects.
