A good strategic plan should provide the sports club or Federation with a roadmap to help them achieve their goals and overall vision. It is a documented plan with key SMART objectives which help to focus not only the staff but the Federation or club’s resources in specific areas.

This guest article by Geoff Wilson will not cover all aspects of strategic planning but will give you a general introduction on the subject.

Why strategic planning matters

Taking the decision to develop and grow your club or Federation means embracing the risks that come with growth and development. Spending time on planning should help you reduce and manage those risks. This includes identifying exactly where you want to take your club or Federation and how you will get there. As your club or Federation becomes larger and more complex, your strategy will need to become more sophisticated. You will also need to start collecting and analysing a wider range of information about the sport in your country and the organisation itself. You’ll need information on how your club or Federation operates and about current and potential developments in your sport. To develop a strategy, you must shift your focus from day-to-day concerns and consider your broad and long-term options.

The four key elements of strategic planning

To develop a strategy for your club or Federation you must deepen your understanding of the way your organisation works. You need to know how your organisation compares to other sport organisations in your country. As a starting point, you need to ask yourself the following four questions:

1. Where is your club or Federation now? This involves understanding as much about your organisation as possible. Find out how it operates internally and externally, what drives its revenue/costs, and how it compares with competitors? What is happening in the sports industry? Who are your key stakeholders? What resources do you have at your disposal? Be realistic, detached and critical.

2. Where do you want to take it? Work out your vision, mission, goals, objectives and values. Where do you see your club or Federation in three or five years? What do you want to be the focus of your club or Federation?

3. What do you need to do to get there/how do you get there? What specific action plans do you need to develop under each objective? What changes to the structure and financing of your club or Federation is needed? What is the best way of implementing those changes?

4. Are you getting there? This phase relates to monitoring the implementation of your strategic plan. This step involves meeting regularly to critically scrutinise your Federation’s performance against the objectives and action plans formulated.

What is a vision?

In one sentence, a vision describes a clear and inspirational long term desired change, resulting from an organisation’s efforts and activities. It clearly states where you want your club or Federation to be in the future?

What is a mission statement?

A mission statement defines the current purpose and activities of your club or Federation – simply what you do, for whom, and what the benefits are. Your mission statement describes concisely (within a couple of sentences) your club or Federation’s activities, customers and how it manages each of these to achieve its purpose. It ultimately deals with the question – Why do you exist?

What are Strategic Goals?

These are long-term targets to which resources are directed and can be related to any one of the club or Federation’s key activities.

Strategic goals are generally:

– Broad areas of focus that help to achieve your vision; – Macro; – Long term in nature; and – Focused on addressing organisational or sporting issues.

What are Objectives?

Objectives are your strategic goals translated into specific milestones that can be performed using the resources of your club or Federation. Objectives should be SMART – – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Responsibility-assigned, and Time-bound.

What are Action Plans?

Action plans involve breaking down objectives into more precise activities or tasks. Action plans document for staff and stakeholders what is to be done, by whom, how and when.

1. Conducted detailed research or an operational review on your club or Federation prior to starting the strategic plan. 2. Bring together your key team and ensure they all contribute during the workshop. 3. Organise several strategic planning workshops. Ensure you give enough time to this process. I also recommend the workshops are held away from the stadium or headquarters. 4. Ensure all objectives are SMART and measurable. 5. Set up a strategic review committee whose purpose is to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the strategic plan. This review committee should meet every quarter with a report provided to the board regarding the status of tasks completed. 6. Launch your strategic plan to your key stakeholders and staff. Ensure everyone is bought into the vision, goals etc

Credit for prior learning (CPL)

Credit for prior learning or CPL is our term for exemptions. High quality learning and assessment in other relevant qualifications is appropriately recognised by the award of CPL.

The ACA qualification has 15 modules over three levels. They are designed to complement the practical experience you will be gaining in the workplace. Football club investment: less ego and more ROI

Historically, a football club always used to be perceived as the ultimate trophy asset – big on prestige, sure, but the financial returns associated with such investment were less clear cut. However, investment in football clubs has come of age, as the types of investors putting their money into the beautiful game evolve and the returns become less about ego and more about ROI.

“The sorts of people buying football clubs decades ago might have been local business owners or people with a personal connection to a town. In part, it may have been viewed as a status symbol and perhaps a chance to give something back to their community,” says Nick Barlow, a Partner at PwC. 

Barlow leads the Retail, Consumer and Leisure team of PwC’s UK Valuations practice in London, advising clients on valuations of business, assets and shares for the purposes of transactions, disputes, financial reporting and tax. He has worked with clubs in the Premier League, Championship, League One, and in Europe, as well as carrying out valuations for sports organisations. 

Fertile ground for investment opportunities

“If you look at the people buying into clubs now, it’s private equity, sovereign wealth funds and globalised investors. And they are certainly looking at these opportunities through a rational, return-orientated lens,” he says.

The vast sums on the balance sheet certainly make for tantalising reading and underscore why football remains a fertile ground for pioneering investment opportunities. According to Deloitte’s 2024 Annual Review of Football Finance , average Premier League club revenues rose by 11% to surpass £300m for the first time. It also says that the ‘Lionesses lift’, following the team’s historic triumph at UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, contributed to a 50% rise in Women’s Super League club revenues.

Meanwhile, PwC’s most recent  Global Sports Survey finds that football clubs and leagues are still the premier assets for investment over the forthcoming three to five years, according to 41% of the experts surveyed, while 85% predict that women’s sport will experience double-digit growth in the near future.

Valuation complexities

However, the highly unpredictable nature of football and its reliance on factors, including how the team performs on the day, adds a certain complexity to the valuations process. This hinges on properly understanding the opportunities for growth in football clubs, Barlow says: “The fundamental methodology of valuing a football club is no different from any other business. Valuation is a forward-looking exercise. So it’s about how much revenue/profit the business will make in the future and understanding the wide range of potential outcomes – including the best case and the downside risks.”

It’s about thinking through the potential upside beyond what the club is already doing, he says, including opportunities to improve the operations of the club itself, building new commercial partnerships, creating the environment to maximise the chances of on-pitch success and generate new value within the club.

Investment interest outside Premiership

Football clubs have grown hugely in value over the years. But with price tags for the top teams continuing to increase, investors are showing interest across the spectrum, in lower divisions outside the Premiership, Barlow says. “With the lower division teams, they’re not necessarily buying a global profile, but they’re buying the potential to create that profile if they’re successful – and with the right ownership, the right investment, and a bit of luck, a football ‘brand’ can truly flourish.

“It’s also an interesting investment opportunity, because you can buy in at a lower division and if you can successfully win promotion (and remain in the Premier League), the value upside is significant.”

Eberechi Eze is no stranger to playing Manchester United .

This weekend's match will be the 10th time he has for Crystal Palace , only appearing more often against Aston Villa and Leeds United , who he also faced during his time at Queens Park Rangers .

Eze, 26, has been on the winning side four times, including in both fixtures last season with the Eagles doing the league double over United for the first time. But despite Palace's success, he had largely been peripheral to it.

Before last season, Eze had only started once against the Reds, during a 0-0 draw in March 2021. And despite beginning both of the most recent matches, he has yet to score or assist a goal in their meetings.

Changing that could go a long way to securing a move to United next summer. As the Manchester Evening News reported earlier this month , Eze is of interest to the club and a forward they are monitoring as they plan to sign a wide player once this season ends.

Despite primarily playing centrally for Palace, the England international almost exclusively features from the left for his national team, previously under Gareth Southgate and now for Lee Carsley . Roy Hodgson and Patrick Vieira also used him out wide during their tenures at Palace.

That role in the United side has been Marcus Rashford 's under manager Erik ten Hag despite the Academy graduate starting as a striker in the midweek Carabao Cup fourth round tie against Barnsley. Whether both would be able to co-exist at United - functionally and financially - appears unclear.

Eze has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park. That deal includes a £68million release clause that becomes active again next year.

The extension Rashford signed last year runs until 2028, but United refused to rule out allowing the £80million-rated forward to leave this summer , with Paris Saint-Germain confirmed admirers of his.

How the pair perform on opposing teams could go a long way to deciding who plays which role in Ten Hag's side, or indeed who is even at Old Trafford next season. Eze excelling could clarify for the club that it is time to move on from Rashford in the new year.

If Eze can prove he can do it against the top teams, starting with Ten Hag's side on Saturday, he could become even more familiar with United.
