  • Secrecy and Repression: “Jekyll and Hyde” also delves into the themes of secrecy and repression. Jekyll’s initial desire to keep his transformations hidden reflects society’s tendency to conceal aspects deemed unacceptable or taboo. However, this suppression only fuels the darkness within, leading to destructive outcomes. The narrative underscores the dangers of repressing one’s true self and the consequences of living a double life.

Character Analysis

  • Dr Henry Jekyll: As the central character, Dr Jekyll embodies the complexities of human nature. Achieving a grade 9 in an essay focused on Stevenson's novella 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' is very challenging. This guide gives you a starting point from which to achieve your aims. Looking at quotations, literary terminology and structures, we explore the basis from which to craft a top band essay at GCSE or IGCSE.

How to Introduce Your Essay

Firstly, check the exam board’s assessment objectives. It is always a good idea to show the examiner that you know the basics of the author and a bit of background. If you do need to include context, the introduction is a good place to go ahead and drop in a fact about the novella. If not, do still mention the date and the author’s name. Following this, your introduction should outline the three main points you are making. In a theme question, this will focus on three places where the theme is clear; in a character question, this will focus on three elements of Stevenson’s characterisation.

Optimising Essay Structure

Using a clear structure makes it much easier to write a successful essay on Jekyll and Hyde. Try to use a PEE (Point, Evidence, Explanation) structure for each paragraph. This will start with a topic sentence and move on to use quotations from the text to support your points. Finally, link the topic sentence to the effect on the reader and explain how this changes or enhances the reading experience.

What Are the Top Quotes?

If you are exploring a theme question such as duality or appearance vs reality, you should look for thematic quotations such as that posed by Henry Jekyll in his final account: “man is not truly one, but truly two”. If you are focusing on a character question, you need to explore differing aspects of that character and can use quotations which show Jekyll’s anguish such as “the moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr Hyde”. Quotations provide evidence to support your arguments. They need to be analysed and linked to the topic or focus of your essay.

Ideas for Essay Titles

If you are practising for a GCSE or IGCSE examination, you should start with past papers. You don’t have to stick to those provided by your own examination board, but do be careful of different assessment objectives. If you have exhausted these, ask your teacher or tutor to give you some that they have written. Finally, you can invent your own based on either character or theme.

Main Themes in Jekyll and Hyde

Jekyll and Hyde explores various contrasting themes, including good vs evil, the conflict between science and religion, guilt and immorality. You should ensure you have a list of these so you are well prepared for your examination. If you look back over recent exams, you will find themes which have been referenced in past papers and you can use these to develop your ideas. Some of the main themes are duality, science vs nature, humanity and deception.

What Literary Devices Are Used?

Stevenson was a master of literary devices. He uses personification to great effect and particularly explores pathetic fallacy when it comes to expressing the links between the weather and his characters’ emotions. Stevenson’s ability to create character is shown in his use of imagery, dialogue and sentence structure, amongst other things. Explore the mark scheme for your specific GCSE or IGCSE paper to check for other literary devices.

Understanding Mark Schemes

One of the most useful things you can do is to check the individual mark scheme for your exam board. Some ask for contextual information, whereas others focus more on language analysis. Review the notes given for grading the top bands and try to give an honest reflection of how your essay matches up to these. A teacher or tutor can help you with more information on how to achieve the top grade.

Summing It Up: Conclusion

Remember that your conclusion is the final impression you give the examiner – you want to leave them with a good impression. Do you best to be clear and concise. You want to sum up points already made into a clear, strong cohesive argument. You don’t need to repeat points already made, as the examiner has already read them. Robert Louis Stevenson: ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’

Read the following extract from Chapter 4 of ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ and then answer the question that follows.

It was by this time about nine in the morning, and the first fog of the season. A great chocolate-coloured pall lowered over heaven, but the wind was continually charging and routing these embattled vapours; so that as the cab crawled from street to street, Mr. Utterson beheld a marvelous number of degrees and hues of twilight; for here it would be dark like the back-end of evening; and there would be a glow of a rich, lurid brown, like the light of some strange conflagration; and here, for a moment, the fog would be quite broken up, and a haggard shaft of daylight would glance in between the swirling wreaths. The dismal quarter of Soho seen under these changing glimpses, with its muddy ways, and slatternly passengers , and its lamps, which had never been extinguished or had been kindled afresh to combat this mournful reinvasion of darkness, seemed, in the lawyer’s eyes, like a district of some city in a nightmare. The thoughts of his mind, besides, were of the gloomiest dye; and when he glanced at the companion of his drive, he was conscious of some touch of that terror of the law and the law’s officers, which may at times assail the most honest.

As the cab drew up before the address indicated, the fog lifted a little and showed him a dingy street, a gin palace, a low French eating house, a shop for the retail of penny numbers and twopenny salads, many ragged children huddled in the doorways, and many women of many different nationalities passing out, key in hand, to have a morning glass; and the next moment the fog settled down again upon that part, as brown as umber, and cut him off from his blackguardly surroundings. This was the home of Henry Jekyll’s favourite; of a man who was heir to a quarter of a million sterling.

An ivory-faced and silvery-haired old woman opened the door. She had an evil face, smoothed by hypocrisy : but h er manners were excellent . Yes, she said, this was Mr. Hyde’s, but he was not at home; he had been in that night very late, but he had gone away again in less than an hour; there was nothing strange in that; his habits were very irregular, and he was often absent; for instance, it was nearly two months since she had seen him till yesterday.

Jekyll and Hyde is about the duality in society and within us all. Stevenson explores the duality in Victorian society through the setting of the novella. London itself was a city of contrasts in the Victorian era; due to the rise in population in the Industrial Revolution, wealthy respectable areas were adjacent to poverty-stricken areas, enabling the wealthiest in society to disappear into the poorer areas and behave in immoral ways without being discovered. Stevenson’s use of setting exposes Victorian fears of immoral behaviour and the hypocrisy that existed in the Victorian era.

In this extract, Stevenson presents Soho sinister and mysterious. Stevenson’s use of words such as ‘low’, ‘dingy’ and ‘dismal’ create imagery of dark, drab colours, which reflect the gloomy weather conditions and the run-down appearance of the buildings in Soho. Stevenson compares the sky to a ‘great, chocolate-coloured pall’, which suggests that the fog and pollution have created a brown cloak, covering the skies. The skies in London would have been filled with thick smoke as a result of pollution from the factories during the Industrial Revolution at the time when Stevenson was writing the novel. This, combined with the fog of a cold wintery day, would have made it much easier for criminals - like Mr Hyde - to carry out their crimes without being noticed. Stevenson also makes the darkness seem forceful and aggressive in the words ‘reinvasion of darkness’, which has the effect of highlighting just how dark the streets are. These descriptions of fog and darkness add to the sense of mystery and fear not only because it is very clear that Utterson is struggling to see, but also that criminal behaviour could be taking place around him without him noticing.

Stevenson’s descriptions of Soho and the people that live there add to the sense of mystery and fear. He states that Utterson views Soho as ‘like a district of some city in a nightmare’. This imagery of nightmares suggests that Utterson is afraid of what he may find when he enters Soho. Utterson, like Stevenson’s Victorian readers, might have been afraid of Soho because of its reputation as a place where many crimes took place during the 19th century. It was also a place that was known for other types of immoral behaviour, such as prostitution, which explains why Utterson feels very fearful when he arrives. Stevenson’s use of the word ‘ragged’ to describe the children and the word ‘slatternly’ to describe the other people demonstrate that the people living in Soho are poor and dirty. It is clear that Utterson feels afraid of the people. The contrast between the area itself and Utterson’s fear of it highlights the duality in Victorian society; wealthy men like Utterson would often not want to be seen in a poverty-stricken area such as Soho due to the divide in the class system at the time.

Throughout the novel as a whole, Stevenson uses setting to create mystery. Jekyll’s house itself is mysterious as the front of the house looks respectable but from the back it is ‘sinister’. It adds to the mystery because, when Enfield first describes how he met Hyde, he explains that Hyde disappeared into ‘the place with the door’ but doesn’t make it clear what ‘the place’ is. The reader only becomes aware that this door is actually the back of Jekyll’s house later in the novel. Jekyll’s house is also used by Stevenson as a symbol for Jekyll’s double character, which is the main source of mystery and fear in the novel. Whereas the front is described by Stevenson has having an ‘air of wealth and comfort’ the back door is described as ‘blistered’. This seemingly respectable house has its less respectable part at the back, just as the seemingly respectable man, Dr Jekyll, has a less respectable side. The setting therefore symbolises the duality in society at the time. Many wealthy men, just like Jekyll, were not what they seemed.
