'Raangi' Movie Review: Problems galore in this tepid Trisha thriller

At one point in Raangi, Trisha’s Thaiyal Nayagi (TN) faces a major conundrum. Compromising videos of her niece Sushmitha (played by Anaswara Rajan) are being circulated, and TN has to find a way to solve the issue without the girl’s name being tarnished. This is a very crucial moment in the film for two reasons

1) This is the scene that serves as the plot pusher, and 2) Everything goes downhill from here. The way TN goes around making things better for her niece is peppered with scenes that are not just poorly conceptualised, but downright regressive. Take, for instance, the scene where she double-checks if the girl in the video is indeed Sushmitha.

Considering she plays a journalist who understands the importance of saying the right things and having high ethical standards, the first thing TN tells her niece is to strip bare. Why? Even before we wrap our heads around this bizarrely framed request, which doesn’t even take Sushmitha’s feelings into consideration, the makers decide to train their cameras on the garments that are being removed. We reach our second ‘why’ and within the span of a few more minutes, TN just moves on to her next plan without providing Sushmitha with a well-deserved explanation. As I said, every single thing goes downhill from here.

In fact, before moving on to provide a superficial commentary on global issues of warmongering, and oil politics, TN drops in liberal doses of misogyny when she advises a high school girl that beauty is just a teeth braces and plastic surgery away. One can argue that it is what the young girl might have wanted to hear, but then, is it the right message to give in a film that wants its protagonist to be a role model for young and impressionable girls? It is deeply disappointing that this insensitive scene was just preceded by TN’s compelling and holistic view of high school students’ insecurities and proclivity for attention. This constant oscillation between insensitivity and wokeness simply magnifies the problematic parts of the narrative.

There is a never-ending barrage of randomness in Raangi. What starts off as a cyber crime case in Guindy, reaches strife-torn areas of an unnamed (read, muted by the censors) country in Africa. The problem isn’t the shifting of locales but the shifting of ideologies. Why is the person who waxed eloquently about the depravity of catfishing, not take a backseat when they gradually become the person they warned others not to be? What exactly was the equation between TN and Aalim, one of the militants in that African country who strongly lives by the adage, ‘one man’s terrorism is another man’s revolution.’ Even without getting into the politics of this film, it is almost impossible to shake off the feeling of Raangi feeling like the movie equivalent of Murphy’s Law.

While sketching the character of TN, it is clear that AR Murugadoss and director M Saravanan mistook boorishness for bravado. Despite starting strongly by invoking the names of Gauri Lankesh, and talking about real problems of the society without mincing words, TN fizzles out soon enough. Digs at the present state of journalism would have hit harder if the route taken by TN was anything even remotely aspirational. Yes, TN gets an interesting scene where the character allows the actor to take centrestage, and a sunglass-sporting Trisha gets a solid slo-mo walk, a couple of okay-ish punch dialogues, and an impressive resolution to a potential stunt sequence. But, very little comes off it.

One of the saving graces of the film is the presence of Aalim, and his beautiful love story. Also, the music of C Sathya and the cinematography of KA Sakthivel beautifully capture this brief respite from his overwhelming loneliness. Actually, I’d have loved to see more of Aalim’s understanding of companionship and family in Raangi.

With the last act, Raangi aims to be a slick action thriller, and it indeed looks the part. The stunt sequences, despite the disappointing shooting abilities of the gun-toting men, keep up the engagement factor. But again, there is a pervading sense of uneasiness considering the unexplained equations shared by TN, Sushmitha, and Aalim. However, the biggest problem of them all is the complete disdain for Sushmitha’s choices considering she is the centre of every single plot point in Raangi.

She is asked to strip down by her aunt without being given any reason. She is asked to pose for a photo not knowing it’s being used for catfishing a potential danger to her life. She is asked to go to a foreign country where civil unrest is afoot. She is asked to escape bullets being shot at her without even knowing who has the finger on the trigger. And when Sushmitha asks TN, “Why are they shooting?” the former is at the receiving end of an inappropriately timed sermon on gun control and the futilities of war. Come on, team Raangi...this, among a lot of other things, is just… wrong.

Raangi Tamil Movie Review: தொழில்நுட்பத்தின் தாக்கத்தையும், நிறைய அரசியலையும் பேசியிருக்கிறது ராங்கி. ஒரு கனமான கதையை கதாநாயகி மேல் தூக்கி வைத்து, அதை சரியான இடத்தில் இறக்கி வைத்துள்ளார் இயக்குனர் சரவணன்

இது கதாநாயகிகளின் காலம். ஹீரோக்களுக்கு பின்னால் டூயட் பாடாமல், அவர்களே முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரமாக மாறி வரும் ஆரோக்கியமான காலம். அந்த வரிசையில், த்ரிஷா நடித்து இன்று வெளியாகியிருக்கும் படம் ராங்கி.

ராங்கி என்றால், குஷி படத்தில் விஜயகுமார் சொல்வாரே, ‘அகம்பிடித்த கழுதை, திமிர் பிடிச்சது’ என்றெல்லாம்; அப்படியான பொருள், அதற்கும் உண்டு. ஆனால், இங்கு ராங்கி என்பதை துணிவுக்கு பயன்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

துணிவான ஜார்னலிஸ்ட் ஆக த்ரிஷா. பத்திரிக்கையாளர் என்றால், கிசுகிசு எழுதுவது அல்ல என்கிற உறுதியோடு நடைபோடும் பத்திரிக்கையாளர். வெளிநாட்டு தீவிரவாதி ஒருவருடன் பெண் ஒருவர் சாட் செய்கிறார். அவன் தீவிரவாதி என அந்த பெண்ணுக்கு தெரியாது. அந்த பெண் பயன்படுத்தும் டிபி போட்டோ, த்ரிஷாவின் அண்ணன் மகளின் போட்டோ.

போலி போட்டோவை வைத்து நடக்கும் இந்த சாட் பற்றி, ஒரு கட்டத்தில் த்ரிஷாவுக்கு தெரியவர, அவரும் அந்த 17 வயது பையனுடன் சாட் செய்கிறார். அவன் மீது ஒரு விதமான ஈர்ப்பு த்ரிஷாவுக்கு வருகிறது. அவன் யார் என அறிய முற்படும் போது, இந்தியாவில் இருந்து அந்த நாட்டுக்குச் சென்ற அமைச்சர் ஒருவர், அங்கு எண்ணெய் டீல் ஒன்று செய்கிறார். அவருடன் எடுத்த போட்டோவை அந்த இளைஞர் பகிர்கிறார்.

அதைப்பார்த்த த்ரிஷா, தான் பணியாற்றும் ஊடகத்தில் அதை ப்ரேக்கிங் செய்தியாக்குகிறார். அதனால் பிரச்னை ஏற்படுகிறது. சம்மந்தப்பட்ட அமைச்சரும் கொல்லப்படுகிறார். த்ரிஷாவுக்கு அந்த போட்டோ எப்படி கிடைத்தது? என விசாரணையில் இறங்குகிறது போலீஸ். த்ரிஷாவையும், அவரது அண்ணன் மகளையும் அழைத்துக் கொண்டு, தீவிரவாதியை தேடி அந்த நாட்டுக்குச் செல்கிறது போலீஸ். அதன் பின் தீவிரவாதி பிடிக்கப்பட்டானா? த்ரிஷாவின் நிலை என்ன ஆனது? என்பதை அடுத்தடுத்து சஸ்பென்ஸ் குறையாமல் நகர்த்தியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர் சரவணன்.

சத்யாவின் பின்னணி இசை, ராங்கியை ஏங்கி பார்க்க வைக்கிறது. கே.ஏ.சக்திவேலின் ஒளிப்பதிவும், த்ரிஷாவை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் ரசிக்க வைக்கிறது. இயக்குனர் முருகதாஸ் கதைக்கு சிறந்த திரைக்கதையை எழுதி, அருமையான வசனங்களையும் தந்துள்ளார் சரவணன். ‘எங்கள் நாட்டில் வளம் இருந்ததால் நாங்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டோம், உங்கள் நாட்டிலும் வளம் இருக்கிறது’ என , உயிர் விடும் நேரத்தில் எச்சரிக்கும் தீவிரவாதி.

‘நாங்கள் தீவிரவாதி இல்லை, தீவிரமாக போராடுவதால் எங்களுக்கு இந்த பெயர்’ போன்ற கனமான வசனங்களை அடித்து நிமிர்த்தியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர். 17 வயது இளைஞனை த்ரிஷா காதலிக்கிறாரா? இல்லை, அவன் மீது ஈர்ப்பா? என்கிற அளவிற்கு, அவரது சாட் பரிவர்த்தனைகள் ரம்யமாக போகிறது.

த்ரிஷா மற்றும் ஆலிம் ஆகிய இருவரும் தான் படத்தை தோளில் சுமக்கின்றனர். தொழில்நுட்பத்தின் தாக்கத்தையும், நிறைய அரசியலையும் பேசியிருக்கிறது ராங்கி. ஒரு கனமான கதையை கதாநாயகி மேல் தூக்கி வைத்து, அதை சரியான இடத்தில் இறக்கி வைத்துள்ளார் இயக்குனர் சரவணன்.

பரபரப்பான படத்தை பார்க்க விரும்பினால் ராங்கிக்கு போகலாம்.

RAANGI MOVIE REVIEW

Raangi is M Saravanan's return to the director's chair after a gap of 7 long years and he is back with a female-centric action film. He aims to give the eternal girl next door an action makeover and fairly succeeds in it. The Tamil audience has embraced Trisha as a character they can relate to over the years. But this relatable character becomes an empowered and gutsy woman in Raangi. This transformative out of box thinking itself deserves a huge round of applause. Kudos to Saravanan and Trisha for making it happen. An A-list heroine delivering big-time without the help of a hero is a treat to watch.

All of us would love to watch our favorite heroine do some kick-ass action. For Trisha fans, this is a rare opportunity to see their leading lady in an action film. This could have easily misfired especially after the high of Kudhavai in Ponniyin Selvan. But Trisha as Thayal Nayagi doesn't falter. She plays her role with 100 percent conviction and authenticity. The voiceover by Love Today fame Raveena Ravi for Trisha gives a sense of familiarity. This film more than makes up for her past slip-ups in female-centric films.

The other characters pale in comparison to Trisha's presence but the actors who play Aalim and Sushmitha play their characters with credibility within their space. Giving a love story angle to an anti-social element was quite fresh and impactful too. The landscape of Libya is beautifully captured through the lens of K A Sakthivel. The dialogues are hard-hitting and make us ponder and look within ourselves. Are people pushed to take up terrorism because they have no other means to fight back? A rather dicey question with no clear answers to justify their deeds. But Raangi attempts to make us empathize by giving us a balanced view of things.

Sathya's music is decent, but not helps much to elevate the film. A bit more effort would have made the sounds appealing to our ears. The shift from action to love might end up disappointing a few if the expectation is for an out-and-out thriller.

A R Murugadoss takes up the writer's baton for Raangi and comes up with a moving story. M. Saravanan does his best to come up with an engaging screenplay to present the story.  The duration too is a big plus and doesn't test our patience.

Around 4 female-centric movies are releasing this week. If you are game for an action love thriller then Raangi could be the perfect pick to end the year.

பலர் பாசிட்டிவ் விமர்சனம் தெரிவித்து வரும் நிலையில், ரசிகர் ஒருவர் 'மெய்யழகன்' திரைப்படம் ஒரு தோல்வி திரைப்படம் என பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்'. காரணம் அனைவரும் தேவாரா திரைப்படத்திற்காக காத்திருப்பதாக கூறியுள்ளார். இது ஜூனியர் என்டிஆர் ரசிகர் செய்த வேலையாகவே இருக்க கூடும் என நினைக்கத் தோன்றுகிறது.

சென்னை: சூர்யா மற்றும் ஜோதிகாவின் 2டி நிறுவனம் தயாரித்துள்ள மெய்யழகன் திரைப்படம் நாளை திரையரங்குகளில் வெளியாகிறது. அந்த படத்தின் பத்திரிகையாளர் காட்சி திரையிடப்பட்ட நிலையில், அந்த படத்தின் விமர்சனம் குறித்து இங்கே பார்க்கலாம் வாங்க..

விஜய் சேதுபதி, த்ரிஷாவை வைத்து 96 எனும் அற்புதமான படத்தைக் கொடுத்த பிரேம் குமார் பல ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து மீண்டும் ஒரு அட்டகாசமான படத்தை அன்பின் மிகுதியுடன் கலந்து கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்.

கார்த்தி, அரவிந்த் சாமியை வைத்து ஆக்‌ஷன் பிளாக்பஸ்டர் படத்தை கொடுத்திருக்க முடியும். ஆனால், அதெல்லாம் காலம் கடந்து நிற்காது என்பதை புரிந்துக்கொண்டு ஆத்மார்த்தமான படத்தை இயக்கியுள்ளார் பிரேம் குமார். மெய்யழகன் படத்தின் நிறை மற்றும் குறைகள் அடங்கிய முழு விமர்சனத்தை இங்கே காணலாம்.

மெய்யழகன் கதை : சொத்து பிரச்சனை காரணமாக பூர்வீக கிராமத்தை விட்டு விட்டு சென்னைக்கு செல்லும் அருள்மொழி (அரவிந்த்சாமி) பல வருடங்கள் கழித்து தனது தங்கையின் திருமணத்துக்காக சொந்த ஊருக்கு செல்ல நேரிடுகிறது. தஞ்சாவூர் நீலமங்கலம் தான் இந்த படத்தின் கதைக்களம். தஞ்சாவூரையும் சென்னையையும் அவ்வளவு அழகாக கதையின் போக்கிலேயே எடுத்துக் காட்டியிருக்கும் விதம் அருமை. திருமணத்துக்கு வரும் அருள்மொழியை பார்த்த மாத்திரத்திலேயே அத்தான் என ஒட்டிக் கொண்டு பாசத்தைக் காட்ட ஆரம்பித்து விடுகிறார் கார்த்தி. ஆனால், அவர் யாரென்றே அடையாளம் தெரியாத அரவிந்த் சாமி அவரது அன்பின் காரணமாக தெரிந்தவர் போலவே நடந்துக் கொள்கிறார். கடைசியில், கார்த்திக்கும் அவருக்கும் என்ன உறவு, கார்த்தியின் பெயர் என்ன? என்பதை அரவிந்த் சாமி தெரிந்துக் கொண்டாரா? என்பது தான் இந்த மெய்யழகன் படத்தின் கதை.

படம் எப்படி இருக்கு?: பாசத்துக்கு பெயர்ப்போன கிராமத்து இளைஞராக கார்த்தி சூது வாது அறியாத மனிதராக படம் முழுக்க அரவிந்த் சாமியை ஆசை ஆசையாய் அத்தான் என்று அழைத்து அவருக்கு உபச்சாரம் செய்வதை பார்த்தாலே தமிழர்களின் விருந்தோம்பல் நினைவுக்கு வந்து விடும். கிராமத்தை விட்டு விட்டு நகரத்திற்கு சென்று வளர்ந்த அரவிந்த் சாமியிடம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள மாற்றங்களும் அவரின் ஆழ் மனதுக்குள் இருக்கும் அந்த கிராமத்து வேர்களும் அடங்கிய கதாபாத்திரத்தில் இதுவரை இல்லாத அளவுக்கு ஒரு சிறப்பான நடிப்பை அரவிந்த் சாமி திரையில் கொண்டு வந்து நிறுத்தி கைதட்டல்களை அள்ளுகிறார். அதிலும், அந்த கிளைமேக்ஸ் போர்ஷனில் அவரது நடிப்பு வியப்பின் உச்சம் என்று தான் சொல்ல வேண்டும்.

பிளஸ்: கார்த்தியின் அன்பால் பேருந்தை மிஸ் செய்து விடும் அரவிந்த் சாமி அந்த இரவு முழுக்க அவருடன் பயணம் செய்யும் காட்சிகளை போர் அடிக்காமல் சுவாரஸ்யப்படுத்த என்னவெல்லாம் செய்ய வேண்டுமோ அத்தனையையும் அடுக்கி படத்தின் திரைக்கதை வடிவமைத்து இருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் பிரேம் குமார். இருவரது நடிப்பு ரசிகர்களை கடைசி வரை தியேட்டர்களில் கட்டிப் போட்டு விடுகிறது. இவர்கள் இருவரை தாண்டி சின்ன சின்ன கதாபாத்திரங்களில் வந்து செல்லும் ராஜ்கிரண், ஸ்ரீதிவ்யா, தேவதர்ஷினி, ஜெயபிரகாஷ் என அனைவரும் தங்களுக்கு கொடுத்த வேலையை கனகச்சிதமாக செய்து முடித்துள்ளனர். கோவிந்த் வசந்தாவின் பின்னணி இசை தான் இந்த படத்திற்கும் பெரிய பலம்.

மைனஸ்: முதல் பாதியிலேயே படம் எதை நோக்கி செல்கிறது என்பது தெரிந்து விடுகிறது. இரண்டாம் பாதியில் ஜல்லிக்கட்டு போராட்டம், தூத்துக்குடி துப்பாக்கிச்சூடு, கரிகால மன்னனின் கதை உள்ளிட்ட பல விஷயங்களை கார்த்தி பேசுவது போல வைத்திருக்கும் சில இடங்கள் பொறுமையை சற்றே சோதிக்கின்றன. சில குறைகள் மற்றும் லேக் இருந்தாலும், ஒட்டுமொத்த படமாக பார்க்கும் போது அன்பின் மழையில் நனைந்த உணர்வை இந்த மெய்யழகன் கட்டாயம் கடத்தத்தான் செய்கிறான்.

Raangi Movie Review: Problems galore in this tepid Trisha thriller

Rating: ( 1.5 / 5).

At one point in Raangi , Trisha’s Thaiyal Nayagi (TN) faces a major conundrum. Compromising videos of her niece Sushmitha (played by Anaswara Rajan) are being circulated, and TN has to find a way to solve the issue without the girl’s name being tarnished. This is a very crucial moment in the film for two reasons — 1) This is the scene that serves as the plot pusher, and 2) Everything goes downhill from here. The way TN goes around making things better for her niece is peppered with scenes that are not just poorly conceptualised, but downright regressive. Take, for instance, the scene where she double-checks if the girl in the video is indeed Sushmitha. Considering she plays a journalist who understands the importance of saying the right things and having high ethical standards, the first thing TN tells her niece is to strip bare. Why? Even before we wrap our heads around this bizarrely framed request, which doesn’t even take Sushmitha’s feelings into consideration, the makers decide to train their cameras on the garments that are being removed. We reach our second ‘why’ and within the span of a few more minutes, TN just moves on to her next plan without providing Sushmitha with a well-deserved explanation. As I said, every single thing goes downhill from here.

Cast: Trisha, Anaswara Rajan, Lizzie Antony Director: M Saravanan In fact, before moving on to provide a superficial commentary on global issues of warmongering, and oil politics, TN drops in liberal doses of misogyny when she advises a high school girl that beauty is just a teeth braces and plastic surgery away. One can argue that it is what the young girl might have wanted to hear, but then, is it the right message to give in a film that wants its protagonist to be a role model for young and impressionable girls? It is deeply disappointing that this insensitive scene was just preceded by TN’s compelling and holistic view of high school students’ insecurities and proclivity for attention. This constant oscillation between insensitivity and wokeness simply magnifies the problematic parts of the narrative. There is a never-ending barrage of randomness in Raangi . What starts off as a cyber crime case in Guindy, reaches strife-torn areas of an unnamed (read, muted by the censors) country in Africa. The problem isn’t the shifting of locales but the shifting of ideologies. Why is the person who waxed eloquently about the depravity of catfishing, not take a backseat when they gradually become the person they warned others not to be? What exactly was the equation between TN and Aalim, one of the militants in that African country who strongly lives by the adage, ‘one man’s terrorism is another man’s revolution.’ Even without getting into the politics of this film, it is almost impossible to shake off the feeling of Raangi feeling like the movie equivalent of Murphy’s Law.   While sketching the character of TN, it is clear that AR Murugadoss and director M Saravanan mistook boorishness for bravado. Despite starting strongly by invoking the names of Gauri Lankesh, and talking about real problems of the society without mincing words, TN fizzles out soon enough. Digs at the present state of journalism would have hit harder if the route taken by TN was anything even remotely aspirational. Yes, TN gets an interesting scene where the character allows the actor to take centrestage, and a sunglass-sporting Trisha gets a solid slo-mo walk, a couple of okay-ish punch dialogues, and an impressive resolution to a potential stunt sequence. But, very little comes off it. One of the saving graces of the film is the presence of Aalim, and his beautiful love story. Also, the music of C Sathya and the cinematography of KA Sakthivel beautifully capture this brief respite from his overwhelming loneliness. Actually, I’d have loved to see more of Aalim’s understanding of companionship and family in Raangi . With the last act, Raangi aims to be a slick action thriller, and it indeed looks the part. The stunt sequences, despite the disappointing shooting abilities of the gun-toting men, keep up the engagement factor. But again, there is a pervading sense of uneasiness considering the unexplained equations shared by TN, Sushmitha, and Aalim. However, the biggest problem of them all is the complete disdain for Sushmitha's choices considering she is the centre of every single plot point in Raangi . She is asked to strip down by her aunt without being given any reason. She is asked to pose for a photo not knowing it's being used for catfishing a potential danger to her life. She is asked to go to a foreign country where civil unrest is afoot. She is asked to escape bullets being shot at her without even knowing who has the finger on the trigger. And when Sushmitha asks TN, “Why are they shooting?” the former is at the receiving end of an inappropriately timed sermon on gun control and the futilities of war. 

Come on, team Raangi ...this, among a lot of other things, is just… wrong.

Meiyazhagan review: Karthi, Arvind Swami’s beautiful bromance has stellar performances

Meiyazhagan review: the film that stands out thanks to karthi and arvind swami as they have engagingly brought premkumar’s highly-nuanced story alive on screen..

Meiyazhagan review: Arulmozhi (Arvind Swami) returns to Needamangalam (near Thanjavur) after 22 years to attend his cousin sister Bhuvana’s wedding. He ends up meeting an unknown man ( Karthi ) at the wedding who sticks to him like a magnet, as he tells his wife Hema (Devadarshini). When Hema asks Arul who this man - let’s call him A - was, he has no answer because he himself doesn’t know. But A knows everything about Arul and showers him with love and treats him with utmost respect. (Also Read: Karthi to be the next superhero in Prasanth Varma's PVCU? Here’s what he said )

Arul leaves his village in 1996 and returns only in 2018 after 22 years. He has beautiful memories as well as very painful ones and he wants to make a quick entry and exit from Bhuvana’s wedding reception, so he doesn’t have to deal with his memories nor with any relatives. But meeting Bhuvana and giving her the wedding gift, makes her as well as Arul tear up (watch the film to know why).

There are hardly words spoken at one point and yet you can feel the emotion between the brother and sister. And this is not the only instance in the film where silence speaks more than words and conveys emotions beautifully. As a baffled Arul breaks his head trying to figure out who A is, the two unknowingly embark on a friendship that is narrated through the film which examines relationships, memories and stories.

Meiyazhagan explores human relationships

Director C Premkumar, who gave us the beautiful 96 which spoke about unrequited love, has now given us Meiyazhagan, which explores human relationships and the relationship with nature. He has uncannily connected this film to his debut directorial as well – the film takes off in 1996 and there are even posted of 96 the film in the background in one of the scenes in the village. 

Meiyazhagan is like an extension of 96 but where two men – who are diametric opposites – bond over memories and a way of life that is missed. Arul is very private, urban-bred man who is trying to find his roots, while A is a simple, innocent, country bumpkin kind of character that is happy in his little world. A is too good to be true in that he respects Arul to the point that nothing Arul can do is wrong in his eyes. While Arul can’t forgive and forget what happened in the past, A believes that the past has taught him so much that he is thankful for.

Not your regular fare

At the outset, Meiyazhagan is not your regular commercial fare and is a well-crafted emotional life story that slowly unfolds over 178 minutes. Karthi and Arvind Swami share fantastic chemistry on screen and have delivered excellent performances as have the other cast members like Devadarshni, Rajkiran, Sri Divya, Karunakaran and Jayaprakash. 

Karthi truly lives the role of the innocent and highly extroverted village guy and we have seen him in similar roles in earlier films as well. Arvind Swami has matured more as an actor and this is reflected on screen as we see how he effectively he exercises the extreme restraint and composure which are required for his role as Arul. Karthi is the perfect support to Arvind Swami in his journey of self-discovery.

The director has taken extensive liberty with the running time of nearly three hours and one does feel that certain aspects could have been edited out to prevent the lag and the meandering storyline. For instance, the song while they are eating Bhuvana’s wedding reception feast, the jallikattu scenes or the history sermon.

One must talk about Govind Vasantha’s music here. Director Premukmar has worked with the music director once again after 96 and he has delivered yet again. The music director’s haunting melodies especially, the song sung by Kamal Haasan , Yaaro Ivan Yaaro, and the BGM stand out. Cinematographer Mahendiran Jayaraju has captured the nuances of village life aptly and some of the scenes, especially the quiet night scenes, are captivating.

Meiyazhagan is a film that stands out thanks to Karthi and Arvind Swami as they have engagingly and magnificently brought Premkumar’s highly-nuanced story alive on screen.

மெய்யழகன் Review: கார்த்தி, அரவிந்த் சாமியின் ‘காம்போ’ எடுபட்டதா?

படபடவென்று வெள்ளந்தியாக பேசி வெடிக்கும் கிராமத்துக்காரர் - சொற்களில் கஞ்சத்தனம் காட்டும் நகரத்து மனிதர். இவர்களுக்கு இடையிலான பயணமும், நிகழ்வுகளும் தான் படத்தின் ஒன்லைன்.

பிறந்து, வாழ்ந்து, பழகி உறவாடிய தன் சொந்த மண்ணிலிருந்து சொத்து பிரச்சினை காரணமாக வீட்டை காலி செய்து குடும்பத்துடன் சென்னை வருகிறார் அருள்மொழி (அரவிந்த் சாமி). தன் தங்கையின் திருமணத்துக்காக 22 ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து மீண்டும் சொந்த ஊர் திரும்புகிறார். அங்கே ‘அத்தான் அத்தான்’ என உருகி அவருக்கு தேவையான அனைத்தையும் செய்து கொடுத்து கவனிக்கிறார் கார்த்தி. அவர் யார், என்ன உறவு என்பதெல்லாம் அருள்மொழிக்குத் தெரியாது. அவர் பெயர் கூட தெரியாது. அவர் மனம் புண்படக் கூடாது என்பதால் தெரிந்தது போல் காட்டிக் கொள்கிறார். பெயரறியா ஒருவரின் அன்பு, அருள்மொழியை நிலைகுலைத்துவிடுகிறது. இறுதியில் அருள்மொழி தன் மீது அன்பு காட்டும் கார்த்தியின் பெயரை எப்படி அறிந்து கொள்கிறார்? இருவருக்குள்ளும் அப்படி என்ன உறவு என்பது படத்தின் மீதிக்கதை.

காலப்போக்கில் மறந்துபோன ஓர் உறவின் நெருக்கத்தை, மீட்டுருவாக்கம் செய்து புதுப்பிக்க ஓர் இரவு போதுமானது என்பதை அன்பால் நிறைத்திருக்கிறார் ‘96’ பட புகழ் இயக்குநர் பிரேம்குமார். ஊர் பாசமும், தொலைந்த தடங்களும், மீளும் கணங்களும், நெருக்கி அணைக்கும் உறவுகளும், அப்பாவி மனிதர்களும், வன்ம முகங்களை ‘லைவ் சவுண்ட்’ மூலம் யதார்த்துக்கு நெருக்கமாக படமாக்கியிருப்பது சிறப்பு. குறிப்பாக அரவிந்த் சாமிக்கும் அவரது தங்கைக்குமான காட்சி கலங்க வைக்கிறது. மிக சாதாரணமான உரையாடல்களில் சில ஒன்லைன்களையும், கார்த்தி மூலம் கலகலப்பையும் சேர்த்து மெதுவாக நகரும் காட்சிகளை சோர்வடையாமல் பார்த்துக் கொள்கிறார் இயக்குநர். வீடும், நிலமும், பறவைகளும், விலங்குகளும், சைக்கிளும் தனி கதாபாத்திரங்களாகவே படம் முழுக்க தொடர்வது இயக்குநர் டச்! ‘96’பட போஸ்டர், தோனி பெயரை பச்சை குத்தியிருப்பது, பெரியார் புகைப்படம், கருப்பு பேட்ஜ் என கிடைத்த கேப்பில் பல ரெஃபரன்ஸ்கள்.

ஜல்லிக்கட்டு மூலம் கலாசாரத்தையும், அரசர்களின் வீரம் மூலம் வரலாற்றையும், நீடாமங்கலம் போராட்டம், தூத்துக்குடி துப்பாக்கிச்சூடு மூலம் துர்நிகழ்வுகளையும், இலங்கை போர் குறித்தும் பல விஷயங்களை படம் பேசுகிறது. ஆனால் உரையாடல்கள் வழியே கதைக்கு எந்த வகையிலும் பயனளிக்காத இந்த திணிப்புகள் ஓவர்டோஸ்! ஃபீல்குட் படத்தை கொடுக்க முயன்றியிருக்கும் இயக்குநர் அதற்கான தருணங்களை உருவாக்கி கொடுத்திருப்பது ரசிக்க வைக்கிறது.

அதேநேரத்தில் இரண்டு கதாபாத்திரங்கள் படம் நெடுக உரையாட்டிக் கொண்டே நாஸ்டால்ஜியா நினைவுகளை மீட்டுவது ‘நாங்களெல்லாம் அந்த காலத்துல..” என்பது போல ஒருகட்டத்தில் சோர்வளிக்கிறது. அருள்மொழி கதாபாத்திரம் குற்றவுணர்வுக்கு உள்ளாகி கூனிக்குறுகும் அளவுக்கு சொல்லப்படும் காரணம் அழுத்தமாக இல்லை. க்ளைமாக்ஸின் நீளம் அடுத்த பட ஷோவுக்கான டைமிங்கையும் சேர்த்து பறிக்கிறது. அத்தனை அழுத்தமான எமோஷனுடன் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்ட தங்கை கதாபாத்திரம் இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு எங்கே என தெரியவில்லை.

மனதில் தேக்கி வைத்த உணர்வுகளை முக பாவனைகளில் கொண்டு வரும் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் ஆர்பாட்டமில்லாத அழுத்தமான நடிப்பால் கவர்கிறார் அரவிந்த்சாமி. சொந்த ஊரை மீண்டும் பார்க்கும்போது ஏற்படும் பரவசம், அளவிலா அன்புக்கு தகுதியானவரில்லை என்பதை உணரும்போது வெடித்து அழும் இடங்களில் கலங்கடிக்கிறார். வெள்ளந்தியான மனிதராக, அன்பின் உறைவிடமாக, சின்ன சின்ன உடல்மொழியில் கலகலப்பூட்டி ரசிக்க வைக்கிறார் கார்த்தி. இருவருக்குமான காம்போ நன்றாக பொருந்துகிறது.

சில காட்சிகளில் மட்டுமே தலைகாட்டும் ஸ்ரீ திவ்யா கவனிக்க வைக்கிறார். மீசை முறுக்கி, தொடையை தட்டும் கிராமத்து ராஜ்கிரணை பார்த்து பழகியவர்களுக்கு சொக்கலிங்கம் கதாபாத்திரம் புதுசு. குலுங்கி அழும் ஒரே காட்சியில் தடம் பதிக்கிறார் ஜெயப்பிரகாஷ். தேவதர்ஷினி, ஸ்வாதி, சரண் சக்தி, கருணாகரன், இளவரசு தேவையான பங்களிப்பை செலுத்தியுள்ளனர்.

கோவிந்த் வசந்தா இசையில் உமாதேவி வரிகளில் கமல் குரலில் ஒலிக்கும் “யாரோ…இவன் யாரோ” பாடல் மொத்த திரையரங்கையும் அமைதிப்படுத்தி உருகவைக்கிறது. தஞ்சாவூரின் பசுமையையும், இரவின் நிசப்தம் அடங்கிய அழகையும் மகேந்திர ஜெயராஜுவின் கேமரா அழுகியலுடன் பதிவு செய்திருப்பது சிறந்த திரையனுபவம். லீனியர் கதையை நீட்டி சொல்லியிருப்பதில் கோவிந்தராஜ் கறார் காட்டியிருக்கலாம்.

ஃபீல்குட் முயற்சியில் அதீத உரையாடல்களும், திணிப்புகளும், நீட்டித்த க்ளைமாக்ஸும், மனிதேயம், வரலாறு, அரசியல், அன்பு, நிலம், உறவுகளின் பிணைப்பு என்ன எல்லாவற்றையும் ஒரே படத்தில் சொல்லியிருப்பதும் இயக்குநர் சொல்ல வருவதில் நிகழ்ந்த தடுமாற்றமும் மெய்யழகனுக்கான திருஷ்டிப் பொட்டு.
