Boston University School of Medicine Secondary Application Essay Tips [2022 – 2023]
BUSM’s MD Program offers students the opportunity to work with patients beginning in their first year of medical school. Students will receive their clinical training at the prestigious Boston Medical Center, which has the largest trauma center in the Northeast. Students also have the option of pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Health.

Are you expecting to go on to medical school directly after completing your undergraduate degree? (1400 characters) *(Post bac work is NOT considered undergraduate. If attending a post bac program prior to entering medical school, the answer is NO and should be explained.) If you took gap year (s), please use this space to explain what you have been doing prior to applying to medical school.
Be honest in this response. If you need to take a break before applying to medical school, write about how you will use your time. Discuss all volunteer work , extracurricular interests or clinical experience that you plan to participate in. If you have a goal for this period, provide it. If you need to work to save up money to apply—state this in your response. Explain where you intend to work and anticipated responsibilities.

If applicable, create a list of all the reasons why you were not able to graduate in four years. After ranking your list in order of importance, use this as your outline. Having multiple interests or double majors will only help your application, as the reader will have the opportunity to learn more about your unique talents and interests.

For example, have you lived in another country or experienced a culture unlike your own, or worked in a field that contributed to your understanding of people unlike yourself? Or, have you experienced advanced training in any area, including the fields of art, music, or sports? This is an opportunity to describe learning experiences that may not be covered in other areas of this application or your AMCAS application. It is not necessary to write anything in this section. Also use this section to explain any impact that COVID-19 may have had on your educational/research/volunteering or employment plans. (2000 characters)
First, focus this response on educational experiences—talents or skills you developed through training or learning opportunities (formal education or self-taught). Include anything that is distinctive in your educational path. This can include a variety of situations: internships, undergraduate year(s) abroad, or other things like, did you run a marathon, co-write piano scores for a play – any unique aspects of your journey otherwise not represented in your AMCAS application.
Also, this secondary asks about the impact of COVID-19 on your education, research, volunteering or employment. It’s likely this prompt is a place for BU to easily and uniformly locate information on how applicants were affected by COVID-19, across applications. That’s practical. So, stay clear and categorize your response in the manner they ask: education, research, volunteering or employment. Be concise and direct.
Also, consider this prompt as an opportunity to place in context the effect of a public health crisis that no one could foresee. How do you, a future doctor, now foresee patient care in light of this pandemic? How did you take the initiative to ease the burden of COVID restrictions on others, especially the vulnerable ?
Boston University School of Medicine essay #4: Why BUSM?
Boston Medical Center is the largest safety net hospital in New England, serving primarily people who are publicly insured, people of color, immigrants, and low-income people in the Greater Boston Area. Why are you specifically interested in beginning your medical education in this environment, and how do you feel that your previous experiences will prepare you for this unique learning environment? (3000 characters)
This prompt is an opportunity to connect with BU’s mission and purpose . In the prompt, they steer you to address your commitment to caring for the underserved, less privileged, immigrants, diverse cultures and populations of Boston. Be sure to read their mission statement and program descriptions carefully. Then, fit yourself squarely with being a medical student who will thrive and succeed treating the underserved and diverse communities through their programs. Link your suitedness with something you’ve already done to prep yourself to understand the needs of a large urban, multicultural, diverse and vulnerable people. Have you volunteered or shadowed in a large urban hospital? What did you learn about patient care? If what you’ve done is already an “activity” on your application, do not replicate it word for word. Revise the “take away,” or add one, that is an explicit match to the values of BU.

If you had a gap between high school and college describe the circumstances under which this occurred and what you did during that time. Delineate discrete things you achieved and tie them to a skill you gained or a lesson you learned. This is not common so it is likely that your experience was unique. Use this to your advantage and sell this year as something that made you a stronger person and candidate for medical school.
2. Are you expecting to go on to medical school directly after completing your undergraduate degree?* (Post bac work is NOT considered undergraduate. If attending a post bac program prior to entering medical school, the answer is NO and should be explained.) If you took time off between undergraduate and medical school, describe the experiences you had during that time. For each experience, explain how this helped you grow and become a better medical school candidate, which is the most important goal of the gap year in the admissions committee’s eyes. Focus on the lessons you learned and skills you gained during the time off. Do not repeat what is in your primary application. This is a key to all secondaries. If you use a prior experience from the AMCAS primary (which can be difficult to avoid given the nature of some secondary questions), try to adopt a new angle or describe a different aspect of the experience than has been presented before. Consider using an anecdote to spice up the answer.
3. If you have spent more than 4 years as an undergraduate, please explain below. (You may skip this question if you have graduated within 4 years.) (1400 characters)
Explain the circumstances of your extra year honestly. If you had a challenging personal circumstance, be honest but not make yourself out to sound like a victim, as this will not reflect well. Try to discuss how the extra year helped you grow personally.
4. Please provide a narrative or timeline to describe any features of your educational history that you think may be of particular interest to us. For example, have you lived in another country or experienced a culture unlike your own, or worked in a field that contributed to your understanding of people unlike yourself? Or, have you experienced advanced training in any area, including the fields of art, music, or sports? This is an opportunity to describe learning experiences that may not be covered in other areas of this application or your AMCAS application. It is not necessary to write anything in this section. This is one of the more unique secondary prompts and not an easy one to answer. The key here is to not repeat the personal statement or primary application. The admissions committee already has all that info, so now you need to bring something new. Remember that this question asks specifically about your educational history. Be creative and consider discussing aspects of learning and training that you received in the alternative fields offered above: art, music and sports.
If having difficulty answering, start with an outline; this is key. Focus on both conventional and unconventional education. Make it creative and true to yourself. Let your voice come out in the writing. In the end, if you can tie things together to create a theme as to why you are a good fit to become a doctor, that would be a great outcome.

How to Answer Boston University School of Medicine’s Secondary Essays

Why so much focus on secondaries? Well, we’ve seen students struggle with secondaries year after year, and we recognize their potential to undermine someone’s entire application.
Secondaries present the challenge of both a high volume of questions and a high variance in how they’re asked by different schools. Plus, they always raise a pre-med’s favorite question: “What are schools looking for?”
We’re back this cycle to continue clearing the air and making sense of these often cryptic prompts. Why Boston University? We say, why not? It’s consistently chosen by our students and presents some of the secondary “Greatest Hits” that you’ll encounter throughout your school list.
Since schools rarely change their prompts, let’s examine each of BU’s prompts from last cycle, discuss some tips, and frame each in the larger picture of secondaries:
BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE SECONDARY ESSAY TOPICS ('17-'18)
Prompt #1: did you go on to college directly after high school if no, explain (1400 char).
For the vast majority of candidates, this question won’t apply and they can leave it blank. If you’re one of the few who didn’t attend college right after high school, take a few sentences (or a paragraph at the most) to explain your reasons.
Most of the time, these candidates have a valid reason, like financial or family struggles, or some rare opportunity extended to them after high school graduation.
If you don’t have any “legitimate” justification, then you’re not left with much choice here; you’ll just have to attribute the time off to a lack of goals, perspective, maturity, or a clear vision, and then discuss your transformation over time. If your excuse is less “legitimate,” keep things brief and try not to overcompensate, which could run the risk of sounding neurotic about a relatively small issue.
NEVER feel obligated to fill up all the available space in a secondary prompt, since many don’t merit the extra fluff you would tack on.
Thankfully, this question isn’t asked too frequently, so you won’t have to continuously revisit it.
PROMPT #2: ARE YOU EXPECTING TO GO ON TO MEDICAL SCHOOL DIRECTLY AFTER COMPLETING YOUR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE? IF NO, EXPLAIN (1400 CHAR)
This is a very common secondary prompt, and it’s not too complex or challenging. Medical schools simply want to know that you’re using the time before matriculation to enrich yourself and prepare for the path ahead.
If you’re stuck, here are some alternative ways to ask the question:
- Give a one or two-sentence description of each thing you’re doing during your year off.
- This is the last free year of your life. What are you doing with it?
Be honest about what you plan to do. It’s okay if it’s just a plan at this point. Personal relevance is key. Are you building off your past work on a significant project? Are you seeking further exposure that aligns with your past experience? Are you participating in a novel experience that will offer you insights into a new facet of healthcare? Are you pursuing travel or stimulating hobbies that you didn’t have as much time for as an undergrad?
If you have several part-time experiences during the gap year, then present them as a catalogue to show your wide exposure in a short amount of time. If you’re putting most of your energy into one activity or experience, then dive deep into the responsibility and commitment required. It’s smart to briefly mention the skills, insights, or exposure you’ll be gaining that will be valuable as a medical student and future doctor.
OPTIONAL PROMPTS:
Quick note: the word “optional” is not as straightforward as it seems in the world of secondary essays. In many cases, you can forego optional essays, but there are times when it will behoove you to respond, or otherwise run the risk of being overshadowed by those who choose to answer.
PROMPT #3: IF YOU HAVE SPENT MORE THAN 4 YEARS AS AN UNDERGRADUATE, PLEASE EXPLAIN BELOW. (1400 CHAR)
Our advice for prompt #1 applies to this question as well, almost impeccably. Most people will leave it blank, and many responders will have legitimate reasons. If not, you just have to do your best to explain the “blip” in your educational path.
PROMPT #4: PLEASE PROVIDE A NARRATIVE OR TIMELINE TO DESCRIBE ANY FEATURES OF YOUR EDUCATIONAL HISTORY THAT YOU THINK MAY BE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO US. (2000 CHAR)
This is by far the most interesting and noteworthy secondary for BU. No other school has a question phrased in this precise way (i.e. “educational history”). But when it comes down to it, it’s just the school’s nuanced way of asking a “diversity” prompt.
At Savvy Pre-med, we encourage students to focus on their “intellectual diversity” as opposed to “traditional” forms of diversity like ethnicity, culture, etc (with some exceptions, like Hispanic or African-American candidates who are underrepresented and sought after). And clearly, BU has a similar mindset; otherwise they wouldn’t bother with qualifying the question in this way.
This prompt used to be longer and more detailed in past cycles, providing students with examples of what the school might be looking for. Even though BU has omitted this information, it could still help inspire your choice of response:
“For example, have you lived in another country or experienced a culture unlike your own, or worked in a field that contributed to your understanding of people unlike yourself? Or, have you experienced advanced training in any area, including the fields of art, music, or sports?”
It seems that BU is looking for your “mini-expertise” or niche involvements that give you particular depth in areas that are atypical (or at least less common) for other candidates. Don’t limit yourself to academia just because the prompt uses the word “educational.”
If you’re stuck, here are some other ways to ask the question:
- How are you going to make their campus a more interesting place?
- Have you ever had an unusual job? Did you major in something unique? What makes you different from other pre-meds?
- Pretend you’re in a conversation with your future medical school classmates about the state of healthcare in the United States. What point of view could you contribute to that conversation?
Whatever you decide for your “educational history,” be sure to indicate how your experiences have influenced your worldview and goals as a physician. Based on your experiences, what are your personal strengths that will make you a good physician and how will that contribute to the lives of your classmates?
In general, we’d recommend using this same essay (more or less) for the majority of the diversity prompts you encounter.
PROMPT #5: USE THE SPACE BELOW TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION YOU FEEL WILL PROVIDE US WITH A COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR STRENGTHS AS A CANDIDATE FOR A CAREER IN MEDICINE. (3000 CHAR)
This is what most “Optional” prompts look like. Just a blank canvas with seemingly limitless possibilities. We will do our best to provide you with an “order of operations” in how to approach these “additional info” prompts:
- Does the prompt have any language that implies the ideas of hardship, adversity, or disadvantages (BU doesn’t)? If yes, then only answer it if you answered the optional disadvantaged essay in the primary application. Disadvantaged students are encouraged to elaborate on that aspect of their applications here, if necessary. If not, proceed to the next choice.
- Do you have an issue with scores or grades that you want to clear up? If yes, and if the school doesn’t have another opportunity to explain that (BU doesn’t), then focus on that in your response here. If not, proceed to the next choice.
- Does the school already have a “Why Our School” essay (BU doesn’t)? If not, it might be wise to address your strongest connections to the school, its mission, and its offerings. The thought process behind this: other candidates might take the time to do this, and if they do it compellingly, you’ll be at a disadvantage by not doing so. There are some schools that have publicly stated that they don’t want students to discuss the school itself in their optional question. But schools like this are few and far between.
- Does the school already have a “diversity” essay (BU does)? If not, then perhaps just reuse a diversity essay you have from another school. Other considerations would be essays about major accomplishments or leadership experiences.
If a school has several other prompts, then there is less pressure to answer the “additional info” question, since you’ve already given them a pretty comprehensive view of your candidacy. However, if the “additional info” prompt is one of the only questions for a school, there’s much more justification for including some content.
In the case of BU, choice #3 seems to be wisest unless you qualify for choice #1 or #2.

PROMPT #6: THIS SECTION MAY BE USED BY RE-APPLICANTS WHO WISH TO HIGHLIGHT SPECIFIC AREAS OF THEIR APPLICATION OR TO OUTLINE SPECIFIC CHANGES SINCE THEIR LAST APPLICATION. (3000 CHAR)
Admissions committees are asking you to do the work for them: what have you changed from last time? They’re operating under the (possibly false) assumption that they had a good reason to reject you last time, so they’re trying to see whether, a) you know why you got rejected, and b) what you’ve done to improve.
If you’re stuck, here are some other ways to ask this question:
- Why should we give you a second chance?
- What realizations did you have after your rejection? What did you do about them?
- How have you grown since your rejection?
The previous application will be the elephant in the room, and you’ll need to broach the topic with tact and confidence.
Support your transformation with proof of your improvement. This might mean better grades, a higher MCAT score, a Master’s degree, or substantial new involvement in medically-related activities. This quantifiable, trackable progress will show your determination and help legitimize your candidacy.
If you think your lack of clinical experience made you sound naive the first time you applied, make sure to include stories and insights from your recent hospital volunteering. If you failed to show your capabilities as a leader and problem solver, then highlight some of your newer activities that exhibit your initiative, adaptability, and follow-through. Besides clarifying your motivations towards medicine, you should showcase your broadened perspective and sharpened skills.
PROMPT #7: THERE ARE BOXES TO EXPLAIN LACK OF COMMITTEE LETTER OR SUBSTITUTE LETTERS. (2000 CHAR EACH)
Overall, medical schools like committee letters, since they put you in context with everyone else applying from your college.
About 50% of colleges offer committee letters. If you have a committee letter, hurray, you can leave this blank. If yours doesn’t offer them, then you’re in the clear and just need to quickly explain that fact.
The most unfortunate circumstance would be if your school offers committee letters but you never received one. Colleges have different rules about who gets one. Some only write letters for people with a 3.5 or alumni who have been out of school for a year. In rare cases, schools might interview you and decide you don’t deserve one (ouch).
Even if you fall into this group, it’s not the end of the world. It’s indeed a red flag to medical schools, but not the big, waving kind of red flag. It can be overcome if you have a legitimate reason why you didn’t qualify for a committee letter.
Like with other prompts, don’t overcompensate in your explanation; make sure to clear the air, but it shouldn’t sound like an apology.
WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT BOSTON UNIVERSITY?
Potential “Value Connections” with the school:
The school has a mantra of “Frontline Medicine” (pulled from their website):
“This is no ordinary medical school. Here you’ll find students, researchers, and faculty with a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude, fierce empathy, and a global drive. We not only pay special attention to the underserved, but work tirelessly at the edges of modern medicine. Whether it’s tackling the resurgence of an infectious disease, uncovering brain disease in a retired linebacker, or analyzing health care patterns in rural Zambia, we’ve built our classrooms at the very front lines of the human condition.”

Potential “Concrete Connections” with the school:
- Serious and ongoing commitment to the nearby homeless communities
- Research into CTE, head trauma, and concussion protocols
- The world-renowned Framingham Heart Study
- Emphasis on “Service Learning” groups that supplement the curriculum

How to Get Into Boston University Medical School – Know the Curriculum
Boston University Medical School Curriculum Overview:
As a BU med student, your first two years are spent as a pre-clinical student, mainly learning through lectures. You start learning clinical skills through the “Introduction to Clinical Medicine” course. The 3rd and 4th years are spent in clinical rotations.
Outside of the classroom, BU medical school students are extremely engaged with the Boston community. Many work with Boston Medical Center to help decrease healthcare disparities within the BMC’s patient population. Others volunteer for various organizations around Boston.
Boston University Medical School Pre-Clinical Curriculum:
The first year at BU Med School focuses on foundational science and normal anatomy & physiology.
The blocks during the first year of med school are:
- Gross Anatomy
- Human Behavior in Medicine
- Biochemistry

The second year at BU med school are organ-based classes.

Since BU receives thousands of applications from academically strong students, your essays are your chance to stand out. In this post, we’ll discuss how to craft an engaging response to each of these options.

Boston University Supplemental Essay Prompts
Prompt 1: Boston University is dedicated to our founding principles: “that higher education should be accessible to all and that research, scholarship, artistic creation, and professional practice should be conducted in the service of the wider community—local and international. These principles endure in the University’s insistence on the value of diversity in its tradition and standards of excellence and its dynamic engagement with the City of Boston and the world.” With this mission in mind, please respond to one of the following two questions in 300 words or less:
- Option A: Reflect on a social or community issue that deeply resonates with you. Why is it important to you, and how have you been involved in addressing or raising awareness about it? (300 words)
- Option B: What about being a student at BU most excites you? How do you hope to contribute to our campus community? (300 words)

This sort of a combination of the community service prompt and the global issues prompt . Schools that use this kind prompt want to know about your level of engagement with the people and environments around you. BU especially emphasizes taking the knowledge you learn in the classroom and applying it to the service of the wider community, so definitely respond to this prompt if you feel like this is you.
Your response should illustrate your personal values through the lens of your perspectives on and interactions with your community. Keep in mind that often, the best way to respond to a prompt like this is with an anecdote. This prompt is not an invitation to list all your achievements in community service like you might on your resume—instead, you should share your experiences in a short illustrative anecdote. With the 300-word limit, it’s important that you convey relevant details from your story as effectively and concisely as possible.
This question is twofold. The admissions committee wants to learn about an issue in society or your community that deeply resonates with you, and that has motivated you to perform civic engagement and service. The prompt also asks you to reflect on how you’ve actively approached these issues and advocated for their resolution (or even attempted to solve them!).

Additionally, there are a few other tips you can follow to stand out in this essay. Focus on one particular interest or concern if you can. Share responsibilities and accomplishments you had in your role. Highlight what you learned and how you’ll use those lessons moving forward. Don’t be afraid to call out different clubs, classes, programs, or initiatives on BU’s campus that connect with your particular interests and intersect with the types of service you do.
With only 300 words to spare, less is more—focusing on one key experience or aspect of your identity with an important relevant issue will demonstrate more thought and effort than just listing several experiences from your resume.

The key to this “Why This College?” prompt is to first lay out the specific aspects of the University that excite you, and then to supplement these aspects with the ways in which your personal traits and qualities will make you an excellent fit at the school’s community. Most importantly, you want to thoroughly research the aspects of BU that really resonate with you.
Remember to discuss both academic and extracurricular aspects, as college is about what happens both inside and outside the classroom! Note, the second half of this prompt is new this year—it asks how you plan to contribute to the BU campus community. Be sure to address this half of the prompt by explaining how your personal values and interests align with BU. Discuss how you hope to showcase these values and interests in BU’s lively community.
Here are some possible avenues:
- If you have a particular interest in conducting research, you might use this essay to dote on BU’s extensive undergraduate research opportunities. Maybe you’ve always been interested in studying mental illness, as it’s something you’ve both witnessed and had to reckon with personally for your entire life. You could talk about BU’s Approach Motivation and Participation (AMP) Lab , where you would have ample opportunity to interact with participants dealing with things like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
- If you want to study business and are applying to the Questrom School of Business, you might talk about wanting to join the Questrom Honors Program , where you would be given unique opportunities to attend seminars on niche business topics of your interest, like green technology and intellectual property, and participate in networking events with alumni. Remember to talk about your own experiences in business, whether that was through DECA or through starting your own business. Be sure to also mention why Questrom would be a perfect avenue to continue pursuing your current passions.
- Maybe you’re an aspiring English major with a love for theatre. The Shakespeare Society would be a great place to combine your passions, as the group puts on 2-4 Shakespeare productions per year.
If you’ve visited the campus or have attended a summer program at the University, you should definitely note that in the essay. Include sensory details and specific moments, whether it was visiting the halls that Dr. Martin Luther King once studied in, lying down on “BU Beach” and catching the breeze, or simply sitting outside of Marsh Chapel and observing the great diversity on campus as people walked along Commonwealth Avenue.
That being said, don’t make the focus of your essay anecdotal; you want to be sure to include details about concrete resources at BU that would help you achieve your goals.
One final piece of advice is that you should avoid mentioning generic aspects of BU that could apply to many other schools, such as its location in Boston or low student-to-faculty ratio. You want to show the admissions committee that you’ve seriously reflected on how well you’ll fit at BU, and you can do that by mentioning specific, unique BU resources that support your aspirations.
