Moreover, I scanned through my school library and searched for encyclopedias that could quench my interest. My inquisitive mind and the intention to establish myself as a successful dermatologist kept me going.

Even after I ascended grades to reach my high school, my fascination for skincare didn’t fade away. Rather, I deliberately took electives related to biology. This opened up my scope to explore the areas of my interest. Besides, I found like-minded peers in my high school who wanted to establish themselves as doctors. However, I had already made up my mind to evolve as a dermatologist. So, when I majored in Biology and was studying in the first year, I got the opportunity to delve deeper into the area of my interest. I found the perfect learning ambiance and channelled my efforts to work on academic projects related to dermatology. I realized that dermatology was one of the incredibly challenging spheres of medical science. In India, the healthcare industry has a tremendous scope of improvement, and this is where I want to contribute.

After completing my graduation from the University of Delhi, I enrolled myself for my medical school. It was then that I realized that my interest revolved around finer motor skills. This helped me to excel in my rotations in dermatology. This encouraged me to complete the elective in this area of specialization. Thanks to my rotations, I banked on the opportunity to enhance my knowledge set in dermatology. Most importantly, I got the scope to gain pragmatic knowledge by examining real-life cases. This research worked enabled me to delve deeper into different skin diseases and I explored viable means to prevent them from threatening people in the first place. Particularly, I have identified certain areas where skincare treatment needs more research-oriented information based on pathogenesis. What experiences do you have with teaching, specifically as it relates to the subspecialty you are applying for? What experiences do you have of learning from others, whether an attending, a nurse of 20 years or your patient? What experiences of learning and teaching do you seek in fellowship and in your long-term career?

Make It About the Journey

Through it all, make your fellowship personal statement about the journey you—and your passion for your chosen subspecialty—have taken to get your application to the program director's inbox. What is your story? What are the key moments that have shaped you personally and professionally and your passion for the subspecialty?

Make your fellowship personal statement a story about who you are as a person. Dig deep. What barriers have you faced and overcome on your journey? What keeps you up at night? What is your core drive, your core mission—your core WHY—that happens to bring you now to applying for this fellowship?

How Should the Personal Statement for Fellowship Be Structured?

The personal statement for fellowship should be developed according to the above, centered on the three pillars and composed of, in most cases, five paragraphs as follows:

• Introduction: The first paragraph—and ideally first sentence—should mention the fellowship subspecialty being applied for, or give a clear indication of it.
• Body: The three body paragraphs are for points 2 and 3 from the list above.

Just to be a little less tongue in cheek—by the time you’re applying to fellowship, your interests must be so specific that a generic editing company isn’t going to help you.

The personal statement is an important component of the residency and fellowship application. In the 2012 NRMP Program Director Survey, 77% of residency programs cited the personal statement as a factor in selecting applicants to interview.

While a well-written statement can strengthen your application, a poorly written one can eliminate you from further consideration, even if your other credentials are attractive.

How does your personal statement review and editing service differ from other services? The process begins with a 1-hour phone conversation between you and Dr. Samir Desai, author of The Successful Match and Resident's Guide to the Fellowship Match. The goal is to learn as much as possible about you, your background, your credentials, and your interests. To make this conversation as productive as possible, applicants are encouraged to submit any available documents, including CV and personal statement draft (if available). Why is this phone conversation important? Residency and fellowship programs will be evaluating your statement partly based on content. In Dr. Desai's experience, it's common for applicants to leave out important content, information that would be appealing to programs in their decision-making process.   What makes you stand out from other applicants? In Dr. Desai's experience, all applicants have something that makes them stand out. It may not be apparent to the applicant, but an extensive conversation often sheds light on these factors. Without the initial phone conversation, important content may not be identified and incorporated into the statement. The phone conversation also allows for discussion of your overall residency application strategy. What happens after the phone conversation? Applicants who have a draft in hand may choose to revise the statement based on the discussion. Applicants who have not yet started work on the statement will have better direction on how to proceed. Once the applicant has a draft, the next step will be to submit the statement to Dr. Desai for review. If there are no issues with content, the draft will be submitted to one of our Harvard-trained writing experts. What does the writing expert do? Our writing expert will offer specific comments about your draft. We will identify mistakes, offer tips on word choice, and point out ways to use fewer words to make the same points and impact. Sentence structure, flow, and transitions between paragraphs will also be addressed. We won't hesitate to share our thoughts with you. Our goal is to partner with you to develop the most powerful and compelling statement possible, one that will make the selection committee say, "I want to meet this applicant." Residency in Ophthalmology Personal Statement, Russian

I was raised in a small town in Russia, but my education took me away to the big city from the age of fifteen forward to work and study. I studied hard and eventually became a practicing ophthalmologist. For years, I was a teenager alone in Moscow, independent, self-supporting, and giving everything to my career in medicine.

My decision to enter medicine was a coalescence of several driving forces, especially my admiration and respect for the noble work of doctors and my keen appreciation for advances in medicine. The ability to cure disease has long been my primary fascination. As a child living through the illnesses of my grandparents, I wanted to be able to do something to help them. Later, as a medical student, my interest in surgery took flight when my grandfather needed vitreoretinal surgery in the hospital due to his diabetic retinopathy. I went with him and supported him and even made connections: my grandfather’s ophthalmologist would later introduce me to Professor XXXX at Moscow’s Institute of Eye Disease, and he went on to become a significant mentor, introducing me to primary texts and guiding the continuing complexity of my reading. I attended clinics with him, watched him in the operating room, and felt at home with his procedures and the scientific method.

As I entered my third year of medical studies, I knew I wanted to find a specialty that would allow me to work directly with patients. I tried to master a field that would facilitate my in-depth exploration of innovative technologies. I became a member of the Students Ophthalmology Society, which led to my making a presentation at a regional conference that helped to illustrate many of the opportunities presented by careers in Ophthalmology. My fourth-year Ophthalmology rotation confirmed my commitment to this extraordinary window of medicine. I chose Ophthalmology because of its intimate relationships with internal medicine, rheumatology, endocrinology, neurology, surgery, pediatrics, and genetics. While small, the visual system is extraordinarily complex, with a vast spectrum of disease processes and abnormalities.

I earned a Ph.D. in Ophthalmology in Russia, in addition to the M.D., primarily because I hoped to stay engaged on some level with research opportunities throughout my career. Frankly, I long for the exciting days of my residency at the Moscow Eye Disease Institute, doing extensive research into proliferative diseases of the eye, such as PDR, ROP, and post-traumatic retinopathy. We were looking for the initial (crucial) path mechanism of all these proliferative diseases. I also studied the effects of various rates of oxygen administration on the cell proliferative activity of retinal cells.

During my international internship in Germany at the Eye Clinic of XXXX University, I had a rotation in general ophthalmology under Professor XXXX and another in the Vitreoretinal Department with Professor XXXX. Everything I learned -- from optics and anterior segment to glaucoma, plastics, retina, and neuro-ophthalmology -- fascinated me. I experienced the day-to-day activities of an ophthalmologist in a prominent academic center for two years. It was here that I became a fully accredited eye doctor.

I have not worked as a medical doctor since I finished my internship in Germany with the Eye Clinic of Cologne University three years ago. Since then, I have made my home in Brooklyn after marrying an American man; I have a wonderful family and now feel very strongly that it is time for me to fully return to my professional aspirations in America after having distinguished myself professionally in Russia, Iceland, and Germany. I now have my family affairs arranged in such a way to be able to give my all to my professional position.

I have made solid progress with my USMLE; while I have not attained scores as high as I would have liked, this has much to do with the fact that my education was in Russian, and my latest position as a medical doctor was in German. However, I have made an enormous stride in my English ability and feel qualified for a residency position. Being very friendly is one of my significant assets, and I am a highly self-motivated person with a great passion for my work. I hope to be interviewed for your outstanding program.

How to get an internship.

#1 Work on Side Projects

• Make a 30 second short film in  Autodesk Maya  (free for students) or  Blender 3D  (free for everybody)
• Do a  11 Second Club  animation. 
• Make something cool with Pixar's own  Renderman software  (free for non-commercial use). I'll bet less than 1% of the resumes that Pixar receives from students list experience with Renderman.
• Draw something on ShaderToy .
• Implement a physically-based rendering algorithm.
• Make an Android / iOS app from scratch (Android learning curve is easier). 
• Learn how to use Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform . 
• Open source your work. A Managing Director at D. E. Shaw once told me that " Github  is the new resume".
• Check out  Show HN  to see what projects other folks are working on.
• Participate in a Kaggle competition . Get your first-hand experience with overfitting.
• Do some financial market research on Quantopian . This is the kind of work that real quants do all day. 
• Contribute to open source projects  like Beaker and Satellite. Who knows, you might even impress someone inside the company.
• It builds your brand (see #2).
• It shows the hiring committee that you are willing to hone your craft on your own time, instead of merely trading your time for their money and status.
• It's a low-risk way to find out if you're actually interested in the field.
• In the process of building stuff, you might re-discover important theoretical and engineering challenges that professionals grapple with. In my sophomore year, I wrote a  Bitcoin- arbitrage bot  in Python. Bitcoin exchanges list the price and volume of all open limit orders in the book, while actual financial markets do not. This results in a very fundamental difference in the way  Market Impact  is treated, and gave me something interesting to talk about during my Two Sigma interviews. What I learned was super elementary, but still more practical experience than most candidates.

#2 Make Your Own Website

• Make it easy for recruiters to come across your portfolio via Google Search.
• Reveal your personality in ways that a 1-page resume cannot. In particular, it's a great opportunity to showcase aesthetic sense and visual creativity.
• You should add an attractive profile picture of yourself. Putting a candid, smiling face will help people recognize you and put a face to your list of impressive accomplishments.

#3 Study CS

• My resume got passed over in resume screens because I listed "neuroscience" as my major. I eventually got through by begging a Google recruiter to give me a chance with the phone interview. Afterwards, I switched to Applied Math-CS.
• Getting good at CS requires lots of practice. School is a good place to do it.
• Neuroscience in the classroom has not caught up to neuroscience in the lab. Cutting edge research is pretty much optogenetics or computational (which is more CS + math + physics than neuroscience anyway).

#4 Seek Diverse, Contrarian Experiences

• It's been said that Reed College's Calligraphy Class was a formative experience in Steve Jobs's design-minded vision for Apple products.

• John Lasseter and Ed Catmull believed that 3D computer graphics was not just a fancy artistic medium, but the future of animation itself. They were right.

• Here is an elegant and beautiful explanation of a Math proof using interpretive dance. Sometimes difficult concepts become strikingly clear when the right diagram is drawn.

#5 Plan your next 10 years

• How will I pay off my student debt?
• Can I see myself doing pure software engineering (frontend, backend, mobile apps) for the remainder of my career? 
• How long do I see myself working at my current employer?
• Do I want to transition into more math-y roles like ML research or quantitative finance?
• Do I want to transition into a product management or leadership role?
• Do I want to start my own company someday? Am I okay exchanging coding and making stuff, for the privilege of running a company?
• Do I want to become a Venture Capitalist someday?
• If I plan to have kids by the time I'm 32 - where do I want to be? Who do I want to be with?
• If I keep doing this, will I be happy in ten years? 

#6 Skip the Resume Screen

• If you get a referral from someone inside the company, recruiters will consider your application more carefully. • If you are an underrepresented minority (URM) in Technology, companies are bending over backwards to get you to pass their interviews. At conferences like  Grace Hopper , you can actually get a free pass out of the resume screening and the phone screen, and do on-the-spot whiteboard interviews with companies like Apple, Facebook, Google, Pinterest, etc. This improves the odds of landing an internship  dramatically . A classmate of mine actually got an internship offer from Apple, on the spot, with only her resume (no interview or anything).  Reach out to your computer science department and ask if they would sponsor your attendance.
• Reach out to engineers directly through your school alumni network, and ask them to refer you. Don't be shy - it's very little work on their part and they will get nice a referral bonus if you succeed. The worst thing that could happen is that they ignore you, which doesn't cost you anything.

 My decision to enter medicine was a coalescence of several driving forces, such as my admiration and respect for the noble work of doctors and my appreciation of the vast ocean of knowledge in the area of advances in medicine: the ability to cure disease has always been my initial fascination. As a child, living through the illnesses of my grandparents, I wanted to be able to do something to help them. Later on, as a medical student, my interest in surgery would take flight when my grandfather needed vitreoretinal surgery in the hospital due to his diabetic retinopathy. I went with him and supported him and even made connections: my grandfather’s ophthalmologist would later introduce me to professor XXXX at Moscow’s Institute of Eye Disease, and he went on to become a significant mentor, introducing me to primary texts and guiding the continuing complexity of my reading. I attended clinics with him, watched him in the operating room, and quickly felt at home with the procedures and his scientific method.

 As I entered my third year of medical studies, I knew I wanted to find a specialty that would allow me to work very directly with patients. I tried to master a field that would facilitate my in-depth exploration of new technologies. I became a member of the Students Ophthalmology Society, and this led to my making a presentation at a regional conference and helped to illustrate many of the opportunities presented by careers in Ophthalmology. My fourth-year Ophthalmology rotation confirmed my commitment to this extraordinary window of the medicine. I chose Ophthalmology because of its intimate relationships with internal medicine, rheumatology, endocrinology, neurology, surgery, pediatrics, and genetics. While small, the visual system is highly complex, with a vast spectrum of disease processes and abnormalities.

I earned the Ph.D. in Ophthalmology in Russia, in addition to the M.D., primarily because I hope to stay engaged on some level with research opportunities throughout my career. Frankly, I long for the exciting days of my residency at the Moscow Eye Disease Institute, doing extensive research into proliferative diseases of the eye, such as PDR, ROP, and post-traumatic retinopathy. In particular, we were looking for the initial (crucial) pathomechanism of all these proliferative diseases. I also studied the effects of various rates of oxygen administration on the cell proliferative activity of retinal cells.

 During my international internship in Germany at the Eye Clinic of XXXX University, I had a rotation in general ophthalmology under  Professor XXXX and another in the Vitreoretinal Department with  Professor XXXX. Everything I learned -- from optics and anterior segment to glaucoma, plastics, retina, and neuro-ophthalmology -- fascinated me. I experienced the day-to-day activities of an ophthalmologist in a prominent academic center for two years. It was here, in particular, where I became a fully accredited eye doctor.

 I have not worked as a medical doctor since I finished my internship in Germany with the Eye Clinic of Cologne University three years ago. For the last several years, I have made my home in Brooklyn after marrying an American man; I have a wonderful family and now feel very strongly that it is time for me to fully return to my professional aspirations in America after having distinguished myself professionally in Russia, Iceland, and Germany and now have my family affairs arranged in such a way to be able to give my all to my professional position.

I have made solid progress with my USMLE; while I have not attained scores as high as I would have liked, this clearly has much to do with the fact that my education was in Russian, and my latest position as a medical doctor was in German. I have made an enormous stride in my English ability, however, and now feel that I am qualified for a residency position. Being very friendly is one of my significant assets, and I am a highly self-motivated person with a great passion for my work. I hope to be interviewed for your outstanding program.
