You know a movie is in trouble when you start looking at your watch. You know it’s in bad trouble when you start shaking your watch because you think it might have stopped. “Her Alibi” is a movie in the second category – endless, pointless and ridiculous, right up to the final shot of the knife going through the cockroach. This movie is desperately bankrupt of imagination and wit, and Tom Selleck looks adrift in it.

He plays a detective novelist, named Blackwood, who has run out of inspiration. So he goes to criminal court for fresh ideas, and there he falls instantly in love with Nina ( Paulina Porizkova ), a Romanian immigrant who is accused of murdering a young man with a pair of scissors. Blackwood disguises himself as a priest, smuggles himself into jail to meet Nina, and offers to supply her with an alibi: She can claim they were having an affair at his country home in Connecticut at the time of the crime.

These developments, and indeed the entire movie, are narrated by Blackwood in the language of a thriller novel he is writing as he goes along. One of the minor curiosities of the movie is why the Selleck character is such a bad writer. His prose is a turgid flow of cliche and stereotype, and when we catch a glimpse of his computer screen, we can’t help noticing that he writes only in capital letters. Although the movie says he’s rich because of a string of best sellers, on the evidence this is the kind of author whose manuscripts are returned with a form letter.

If the plot of his novel is half-witted, the plot of the movie is lame-brained. Blackwood and Nina move to Connecticut to make the alibi look good, and they’re shadowed by a band of Romanian spies who make several attempts to murder them, including one in which they blow up Blackwood’s house. The movie betrays its desperation by straying outside the confines of even this cookie-cutter plot for such irrevelant episodes as the one where Blackwood shoots himself in the bottom with an arrow and is rushed to the hospital by Nina in one of those cut-and-dried scenes where the racing vehicle scares everyone else off the road before arriving safe and sound.

In a movie filled with groaningly bad moments, the worst no doubt is the dinner party at which Blackwood becomes convinced that Nina has poisoned him and everybody else at the table. Why does he think so? Because the cat is dead, next to a bowl filled from the same casserole.

We are treated to the sight of eight characters doing the dry heaves and then another visit to the hospital, after which we learn it’s all a false alarm and the cat was accidentially electrocuted in a neighbor’s basement and returned by the solicitous neighbor to a resting place beside the suspicious bowl. Uh-huh.

The explanation for the whole story is equally arbitrary and senseless, and the big reconcilation scene between the two lovers is not helped by taking place at a clown’s convention, with Selleck wearing a red rubber ball on his nose. But for a full appreciation of just how much contempt “Her Alibi” has for the audience, reflect for a moment on the movie’s last scene, in which Blackwood and Nina are back in the snug Connecticut farmhouse for a big love scene and a fade out.

The people who made this movie apparently actually forgot that they blew the house up a half-hour earlier.

Her Alibi is a trifling confection, a near-invisible farce, cinematic pocket lint. That's not to say that it's a terrible movie; cake icing certainly isn't a terrible food.

Falling for a beautiful woman can be murder!

A writer of BAD detective novels is in full writers' block. He pretends to be the alibi of a beautiful woman who was arrested for murder at first thinking her innocent, but as she shows more and more interesting abilities (such as knife throwing) he begins to doubt his first assessment.

The story concerns mystery writer Phil Blackwood (Tom Selleck) who has written a number of best sellers, but he's having concern locating inspiration for his latest novel, so he goes to the courthouse to examine real criminals in action. 

There he meets Nina (Paulina Porizkova), a beautiful émigré charged with a horrible murder. Assured she's not guilty, Phil secures Nina with an alibi and a location to stay. But, as the two start to fall in love, Phil finds he has serious questions about her guiltlessness.

I hadn't watched this film in years, but I remember really liking it. This time around... yeah, for me... it still holds up. I guess I'm just a sucker for comedic shlock. Paulin was mesmerizing in this breakout performance, but Tom was still Magnum PI. -- sorry Mister Selleck, you'll always be Thomas Magnum.

Uneven and with a plot as far-fetched as Paulina Porizkova is eye-meltingly beautiful but has its quite amusing close-your-ears-for-a-second-and-you'll-miss-them-moments—the supporting cast and some lines of dialogue delivered in trimmed scenes are its strongest assets. Would probably have been funnier had weakest link Selleck been a more versatile actor.

I usually like everything Tom Selleck does. It might be like that because I grew up with Magnum P.I. or because my wife and I have been following Blue Bloods now for twelve and half season. No matter what it is, I find the guy rather entertaining.

Her Alibi though...

Rather predictable and formulaic, even when it tries to be clever. The comedy is OK, but sometimes seem forced. It's not boring, but has some pacing problems. It's just one of those comedies you remember watching, but not a whole lot of what it was about.

I do remember watching this on VHS sometimes in my early teens, and that I liked it, but now...well...let's say I won't be rewatching Her Alibi anytime soon...

Someone here had Hitchcock in mind. Successful mystery writer Phillip Blackwood (Tom Selleck in his first film since Three Men And A Baby) has hit a bad spell. Hanging around a courtroom in search of ideas, he falls for beautiful Romanian student Nina (Porizkova). There's one slight problem: she's up on a murder rap.

Blackwood decides to become her alibi - claiming they're lovers, and spirits her away to his luxurious country home to verify the porky. Being an expediential sort of chap, he also starts work turning her story into his latest novel. But when mysterious accidents occur - like when she shoots him in the butt with an arrow - the infatuated author has to ask himself some unsavoury questions. Is she really the killer? And if so, am I next?

The potentially suspenseful situation slips up on a script that would shame a TV Movie Of The Week, one time Australian ace Beresford directs with flaccid blandness. A chase through a shopping mall is wasted when it ends in yet more slappy slapstick. Selleck's charm occasionally rises above this thin material and Porizkova's performance, though it often seems out of sync with the broad comedy, does at least show some indication of actual acting ability.

A mystery novelist dealing with writer's block is pleasantly perplexed by an attractive murder suspect.

Tom Selleck plays Phil Blackwood, a best-selling author of pulp detective novels whose writer's block leads him to a courthouse, where he falls for Nina Ionescu (Paulina Porizkova), the mysterious, Romanian defendant in a murder case. In no time, Phil has set himself up as Nina's alibi and whisked her off to his country home in Connecticut. There "accidents" begin to threaten Phil's life, prompting him to wonder if his new love isn't out to make her alibi a permanent one. A suspicious district attorney, the KGB, and Nina's circus-acrobat parents are also thrown into narrative mix, which is augmented by Selleck's voice-over, consisting of passages of the mystery writer's tortured prose that contrast the author's debonair hero with his own often bumbling behavior. HER ALIBI veers with little purpose from bland drama to heavy-handed slapstick, with rhythm, characterization, and plotting better suited to television than the movies--surprising in that the film was directed by the very capable Bruce Beresford (BREAKER MORANT; TENDER MERCIES). Selleck and supermodel Porizkova (ANNA) are certainly attractive, but the large screen exposes their reliance on poses and lackluster acting.

Although it was Porizkova's best-known film appearance, her role as Nina in Her Alibi earned her a 1990 Golden Raspberry nomination for Worst Actress.
