How to Quickly Make a Fashion Presentation With PPT Templates
Let's learn how to customize a fashion slides template to create a presentation.
I'll be using the Splash - Fashion presentation template for this tutorial.
Here are some tips to help you customize your fashion PowerPoint template:
1. Delete Text
To start, let's delete some text. I'll be using slide number 5. Here's an unedited version of this slide:
Since this slide says 2018, let's change it to say 2024. This can be easily done.
To change the text, highlight the text that you want to change. You'll know that the correct text is highlighted when handles appear around the text.
In this case, I changed the second half of the year to 20.
2. Change the Color
The second slide that we'll be using is slide 6 of Splash - Fashion presentation .
Here's an unedited version of slide 6:
First, select the image to be changed. You'll know that you've selected the object when handles appear around the image.
After you selected the image, click the Shape Fill button. Clicking on this button causes the Theme Colors menu to appear. Then select the color that you want to add to your slide from the Theme Colors menu.
3. Add an Image
For this tip, we'll be using slide number 37 of the fashion design presentation.
Here's an unedited version of slide 37:
One way is to click on the image icon in the middle of the image placeholder. Then select the image of your choice from your computer.
Another way to add an image is to click the Insert tab. Select the Pictures button. This button will take you to a location on your computer where you select an image.
Select your image from its location and click Insert . Then adjust the image as needed.
4. Add a New Text Box
We'll add a new text box. Go to slide number 66 of the fashion presentation PowerPoint template:
To add another text box to the slide, click the Insert tab. On the Insert Tab toolbar click on the Text Box button.
Use the handles to drag the text box to the desired location and to size it. You've just added a new text box.
5. Delete an Object
You can easily delete these objects. For this action, we'll use slide 11:
If there's an object on the slide that you don't want, you can delete it. Click on the object you want to delete.
You'll know you've selected the right object when handles appear around it. Tap the Delete button on your keyboard.
5 Top Fashion PowerPoint Presentation Slide Design Tips for 2024
I hope you've enjoyed the selection of the best fashion PPT templates .
Now, I've got some useful design tips for you:
1. Begin With a Strong Title Slide
It's also the first thing your audience sees. Make sure you start with a strong and creative title to tell your audience they're about to attend a memorable presentation about fashion.
If you need ideas, check this tutorial on how to make a great PPT title slide:
2. Try Image Masking
Image masking is a reversible image editing technique. It covers a part of an image and reveals another. Use it to tell the audience to focus on a part of an image. This isn't a new method, but it sure can give your fashion presentation a different look.
There are fashion presentation templates that already include masks, like this one below. Or you can do it yourself in PowerPoint using the Image tab.
3. Use Animation (With Caution)
When you use animation effects properly, they bring key elements onto your slides in an impactful way. They can add flair and a surprise element to your presentation.
Be cautious. Don't over use animations because they can give the impression your presentation isn't serious. But still, don't be afraid to use them when sharing your fashion show presentation ideas.
Learn about animation effects, and using them effectively, here:
4. Close Strongly
This is the key to make a memorable presentation. There are slide designs, tricks and speaking techniques that'll help you achieve this.
5. Think Outside the Box
This is key when doing a presentation about fashion. Your goal is to attract and keep your audience's attention. They should be focused on your images, brand and products.
Think outside the box when choosing your fashion presentation template. Choose a completely unique design. It could be:
- bright colors
- different slide layouts
- image masking
- geometrical design
- any element that immediately pops
These elements will make your presentation a truly memorable one.
5 Fashion PPT Presentation Design Trends for 2024
The fashion world lives on using the latest trends, so your presentation about fashion can't be any different.
Just like the season's freshest styles, presentation trends change quickly. Make sure your fashion show presentation ideas are up to date.
Here are five design trends to follow:
1. Declutter Your Slides
The minimalist look is a difference-maker when it comes to presentations. Premium templates may come with a lot of infographic and icon options. But that doesn't mean they all belong on the same slide.
Less is more. Not only does it look better, but it makes your point come across easier.
2. Keep the Visuals, Lose the Text
To avoid this, find ways to convert extra text into graphs or charts. Since your presentation is about fashion, this trend works in your favor.
Visuals are easy to take in and will impress more than written words.
3. Have Fun With Typography
But you can't avoid it completely. That's why it's important to use this 2024 design trend. Bold, eye-catching typography is making a splash in graphic design. Pair fun typefaces with your fashion images. You'll create a winning presentation.
4. Colors, Colors, Colors
Peach fuzz and rosy tones. These are taking the fashion world by storm this year. Follow the latest color trends, remember to visit Pantone .
5. Tell a Visual Story
It's the design story and emotions that it brings out of people. First, put together your fashion design presentation ideas.
Then, arrange them into a visually compelling story that can hook your audience.

Presenting your work
Fashion designers are in the business of visual communication, and effective presentation of work is all important. Your brain may be teeming with innovative ideas and you may produce the most original designs, but none of this will matter if you are unable to communicate your vision. In the fashion business, first impressions really do count. When you show your work, you need to ensure that your presentation looks as professional as possible—organized, well mounted, and clean, as well as accurate, clear, and creatively appropriate.
Your illustrations can be mounted on foam boards or on card (the boards are sturdier but can be bulky to transport), both of which can be bought from art supply stores. Boards are available in various sizes and your choice will be influenced by factors such as personal preference, your audience (if you are presenting to a large group the board must be big enough for them to see), the trend of the moment (which could equally be for very large boards or pocket-sized presentations), or the size of your illustrations or portfolio. With experience you will find the size that suits you best, but start by using a 20- x 30-in. board, and be prepared to try out different options. Avoid using a combination of different sizes, which can make your portfolio seem messy.
It is worth emphasizing that the work you present should be clean. Carrying a portfolio around, it's easy to get finger marks on the boards and for card edges to become tattered. Make sure that your presentation is always fresh. Even recycled ideas can have a market if they look as if they have just been produced.
A sturdy portfolio is essential. A selection in different sizes can be useful; you can store work in some and keep others for showing presentations. Make sure that your portfolios are relatively easy to carry, even when laden with work. For protective storage, plastic envelopes are invaluable. If used in presentation, plastic will reduce the picture's color slightly and give it a glossy sheen. Sometimes this can enhance the illustration, but if your artwork looks better matte, don't present it this way.
You will also need to choose carefully your style of illustration as well as your approach to the presentation as a whole, to ensure that
▼ Transporting projects
A sturdy portfolio is the safest and most efficient means of transporting work. Build up a collection of different sizes to house all your illustrations.
▲ Displaying work
Mount work on board or card, or use a plastic folder.
Factors such as the size of your Illustrations and portfolio will influence your choice of size and color.
work is shown off to best effect. If your designs are very delicate you might want to use an ephemeral style of drawing to capture them on paper, perhaps accompanied by flat working drawings. The delicate feel of your designs would then also influence aspects such as the use of color, the choice of fabrics, the style of photography, the poses of the figures, and the arrangement of all these components on the board. In this way, all the elements of a presentation will be working together to promote your ideas.
Beware of trying too hard with finished sheets. You can always use a color photocopier to tidy up an exciting but possibly scruffy example of work from your sketchbook, which was produced in a flurry of creativity. Sketchbooks offer a good glimpse into the soul of your work. You may not always want to reveal this to a client, but sometimes It may help to convince them of the creative journey that has produced the finished ideas.
Ideas in sketchbooks often have a liveliness that can be lost In finalized work. If presenting your sketchbooks, make sure that there are no sharp objects (such as staples) to take the viewer by surprise.
A Simplicity
You don't have to Include fabric swatches or working drawings on your board— sometimes It's best just to let the Illustration speak for Itself.
Working drawings allow a more artistic depiction of the garments, while a colored background can be effective (this one sets off the rich, sober design palette of the garments). Be careful, however, that the color does not overwhelm the Illustrations.
Practicalities of presentation
Embellishing work with unnecessary extras can show a lack of confidence in the main concept, so whether you feel your designs call for an understated presentation or for a more elaborate themed approach, you must be sure that you don't include anything that does not contribute to the impact of the designs. You want someone seeing your illustrations for the first time to be struck by the quality of your design statement—not by the decoration surrounding it. A simple presentation has more chance of being successful, and will not offend anyone's tastes, although a more creative presentation style can create a strong impact (see Unit 24, pages 134-137). Decoration such as edgings must never overwhelm the illustrations, and colored backgrounds should be used only if they complement the design palette. Include items such as working drawings and swatches if they add to the clarity of the presentation, and remember that your work should appear clean and tidy.
Do not use spray mount to stick your images to the board, as this can cause respiratory damage. Dry-mounting images is a safer technique that involves placing a sheet of adhesive backing onto an illustration and then heating in order to adhere the image to the board. However, this is a laborious process and it is simpler and quicker to use an adhesive stick or double-sided mounts.

In the fashion world, new designs are presented in the form of hand-drawn sketches before they’re cut and sewn. First, you draw a croquis, the model-shaped figure that serves as the base of the sketch. The point is not to draw a realistic-looking figure, but a blank canvas of sorts on which to display illustrations of dresses, skirts, blouses, accessories, and the rest of your creations. Adding color and details like ruffles, seams, and buttons help to bring your ideas to life.
Starting Your Sketch
- If you don’t have the right type of pencil, you can do a sketch with a number 2 . Remember to make very light marks, rather than pressing hard on the page.
- Drawing in pen is not advisable since you won’t be able to erase it.
- You will also need colored markers, inks, or paints to illustrate your clothing designs.
- Download one online, where you'll find them in a range of shapes and sizes. For instance, you can download a croquis in the shape of a child, a man, a petite woman, and so on.
- Make a croquis by tracing the outline of a model from a magazine ad or another picture. Just place a piece of tracing paper over the model you like and lightly created an outline.
- Since you want to illustrate your designs in a way that makes them look professional and appealing, it's important to model them on croquis that is well-proportioned and well-drawn.
- Many fashion illustrators practice drawing hundreds of croquis to perfect their ability to create a variety of poses.

Fashion sketches should communicate effectively to the intended audience. Fashion sketches are all about communication — they need to clearly convey the design idea to the intended audience. Whether it's a personal sketch for visualization or a professional presentation, focus on making it easy to understand rather than making it visually artistic. Clarity is key.
Drawing a Croquis
- The balance line should be a straight vertical line, even if you want the model to pose in a leaning position. For example, if you want the model to be posed with her hips tilted slightly to her left, draw a straight balance line in the middle of the page. You want this line to extend from the top of the model's head to the ground that she is standing on.
- Note that when you’re designing clothes, a proportional model isn't required, because the clothing is what is being showcased, not your figure drawing skills. Don’t worry too much about creating an accurate-looking model or adding features to the face.
- Keeping your desired pose in mind, tilt this pelvic square either left or right. For example, if you want your model’s hips slanted to the left, tilt the square slightly to the left. If you want a normal standing model, just draw the square upright without any angles left or right.
- When you’re finished, the torso should look like a normal torso you would see on a body. Refer to pictures of models in magazines or advertisements for reference. Notice how the waist is smaller than the lower portion of the body and hips. The torso should measure about two heads in length.
- It’s common to sketch the shoulders and hips tilted in opposite directions, in a position called contrapposto, or counterpose. This gives the impression of movement. Draw the waist as a horizontal line that’s shorter than the shoulder and hips lines.
- Pay attention to bend lines (the curve of the rib cage, etc.) as those angles and lines are crucial to creating a figure that doesn't look like it has dislocated body parts.
- You can erase the initial oval you drew to represent the head.
- Draw the head so that it looks natural with the pose you have selected. You can tilt it slightly up or down, or to the right or left.
- The top of each thigh should be approximately the same width as the head. Taper the width of each leg from the thigh to the knee. By the time you reach the knee, the leg should be one-third the width of the bigger portion of the thigh.
- To draw the calves, taper down to the ankles. Each ankle should be about one-fourth the width of the head.
Drawing Clothes and Accessories
- Remember that different fabrics and structures lie on the body in different ways. If the fabric is thin and silky, it will rest on the body and drift away, almost billowing. If the fabric is thick like denim or wool, it will be boxier and will show less shape of the body (think denim jackets).
- Try to illustrate the texture of the fabric you’re drawing, whether it’s smooth, coarse, stiff, or soft. Add details like sequins and buttons to make the drawing look more realistic.
- Folds can be drawn using loose, wavy lines.
- Use circular patterns to show wrinkles.
- Take out a straight edge to draw exact pleats.
- Pay attention to how folds, pleats, and wrinkles change the appearance of a pattern. It may need to bend or be cut off at certain points to look accurate.
- Take the time to draw the pattern in detail and make sure it looks the same across the entire grid.
- You can color the clothing with markers, ink, or paint. Mix colors and use a variety of shades to illustrate your designs.
- imagine the design moving towards you under spotlights on a runway when you’re working on shading and texture. Deeper folds in a fabric will result in darker shades of the color you're using. Where fabric is hit by the light, the colors should appear lighter.
- Adding features like hair, sunglasses, and makeup is a nice final touch that will make your fashion sketch come to life.
- Flats should be drawn to scale. Make an effort to create illustrations that look as exact as possible.
- You should include a back view of your flats as well, especially if the back of the design includes unique details.

In the world of fashion, designers believe in bringing their ideas to life with the help of drawings. A fashion sketch is the first step towards creating beautifully designed garments. Fashion Design Drawings play a vital role in the designing and apparel-making industries. Designers use these drawings to communicate with other people about their ideas. These drawings act as an initial sketch which is later finalized by comparing different colors and patterns.
Types of Fashion Designs Drawings
Fashion Design Drawings are the best friends of a fashion designer. But these drawings have a lot of varieties. Some types of these drawings are-
1. Flat Sketch or Fashion Flat
Flat Sketches are also known as technical flats in the world of fashion. These sketches are linear 2-dimensional black and white illustrations of garments. The sketch is such that as if a garment is laying flat on a surface for display of its designs, stitching, and other detailing. These types of sketches are usually made using software programs.
2. Tech Sketch
Tech Sketch is a flat sketch with details of the particular specifications of the garment in written text. These sketches are also known as callouts. Tech Sketches are mostly used by fashion designers or fashion illustrators to represent a design more precisely with detailed explanations.
Spec or specification is a type of fashion design drawing which is usually used for the manufacturing of apparel. These drawings include a lot of detailing of the garment like the type of fabrics used, the estimated cost of production, etc.
4. Working Drawing
These types of fashion drawings are used by pattern makers. These drawings contain all the specifications needed by the pattern maker to make the pattern pieces like the fabric swatches and fasteners used.
5. Presentation Drawing
Presentation Drawing is the final sketch of the garment which a fashion designer presents to the client or the senior designers.
6. Fashion Croquis
Fashion Croquis is the drawing of the figure of the apparel that can act as a template over which one can design the garment by tracing easily.
Techniques of Fashion Designs Drawings
Fashion drawing is a skill, and can be learned or improved using a lot of techniques. Here are some useful techniques for you to improve your fashion drawing skills.
- Understand Anatomy
To be good at fashion drawing it is vital to know how to draw anatomically correct proportions of a figure. A correct drawn figure allows the garment to look appealing on it. It will be easier for you to draw certain posed figures if you know how to draw them correctly.
- Use Technology
Nowadays, with several advanced technologies in the market, every field is growing at a super-fast pace. In the fashion industry also there is a lot of software that can help you in beautifying your designs and illustrations. For example, a background of a lane or runway can be added while representing a design to the clients. This can give more clarity to the design idea like where it can be worn.
- Make Patterns
Patterns can also tell a story on their own. They can make a simple fabric very interesting. Patterns are never going out of fashion. To design various beautiful fashion drawings try to add some touch of appealing patterns to it.
- Hairstyles matter too
With the figure shape and dress design, the hair of the figure also matters a lot. Learn how to illustrate different hairstyles based on hair textures and thickness. A figure can look more classy if an ideal hairstyle is illustrated with it.
- Focus on the accessories too
In the fashion world, not even a small detailing is left out. Then how can we be careless with the accessories? Accessories also play a vital role in a figure representation of a garment. How to improve your drawing skills to be become a fashion designer
What is fashion design.
Fashion design is a form of art dedicated to the creation of clothing and other lifestyle accessories. Modern fashion design is divided into two basic categories: haute couture and ready-to-wear.
The haute couture collection is dedicated to certain customers and is custom sized to fit these customers exactly. In order to qualify as an haute couture house, a designer has to be part of the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture and show a new collection twice a year presenting a minimum of 35 different outfits each time.
Ready-to-wear collections are standard sized, not custom made, so they are more suitable for large production runs. They are also split into two categories: designer/createur and confection collections. Designer collections have a higher quality and finish as well as a unique design. They often represent a certain philosophy and are created to make a statement rather than for sale. Both ready-to-wear and haute-couture collections are presented on international catwalks.
How to get into fashion design
Earning a fashion design degree can help designers launch their careers. But a degree alone does not guarantee success. Fashion designers also need a strong portfolio, work experience, and a professional network to break into the fashion industry. Career success also depends on skill. Designers must know their brand identity, aesthetic, and niche in the industry.
Successful fashion designers work their way up. Many start building skills long before entering a fashion program. Learning how to sew, following fashion trends, and practicing with design software all help future designers gain admission to competitive fashion programs. After earning a degree, designers often work as stylists, fashion buyers, and assistants to established designers. These roles help designers expand their skills and build a network. Learn more about the various roles and career opportunities in fashion design .
1. Complete a fashion design program
Most fashion designers hold an art and design bachelor’s degree. During a fashion design program, students study fabrics, fashion theory, and colour theory. They also learn how to create styles using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Fashion design courses use project-based assignments to help students strengthen their skills and build their portfolios.
Fashion design degree programs incorporate coursework in fashion merchandising, business, and marketing. Designers draw on these skills to launch a line, evaluate customer demand for styles, and earn a profit. At the conclusion of a fashion design program, seniors may design a line for a school fashion show.
2. Gain hands-on experience
A fashion design or fashion merchandising degree provides valuable training for a career in fashion. However, designers also need hands-on experience.
During school, fashion designers should pursue internship opportunities. Many colleges connect aspiring designers with companies hiring interns. During an internship, students work under the supervision of an experienced fashion designer. Internships provide practical experience with the business side of the fashion industry. While students hone techniques and aesthetics in class, an internship provides career training.
In addition to internship experience, students should consider part-time or contract work opportunities. Working for a small brand helps students build their portfolio and potentially launch their own line. Experience with a major brand helps designers build their resume and make valuable connections in the industry.
3. Network within the industry
Like other artistic fields, networking helps fashion designers find professional opportunities, secure clients, and advance their careers. Designers should begin networking as early as possible, even before entering a fashion program. Networking events in school offer a valuable resource for meeting fashion professionals.
Connect with other designers, suppliers, buyers, and everyone else in the industry. Those connections can pay off once you begin freelancing or applying to full-time positions.
4. Build your design portfolio
Careers in fashion require a strong design portfolio. Many fashion designers start building their portfolios before entering fashion programs. Students expand their portfolios to showcase their designs and skills. For example, designers might want to show range in their portfolio by including ready-to-wear looks and custom high fashion looks, or they may emphasise their technical skills.
Throughout a fashion career, designers update their portfolios. Internships, entry-level jobs, and stylist positions all help designers add to their portfolio.
5. Stay up-to-date on the fashion industry
Fashion designers need to stay on top of trends and keep up with fashion news. In an industry that changes seasonally, designers must devote time to following fashion cycles.
Several resources help fashion designers stay current. Professional associations, fashion magazines, and fashion shows showcase trends and industry information. Following other fashion designers and watching red carpet events also helps designers keep up with trends. Designers can then incorporate new styles into their upcoming projects.

What do you need for fashion drawing?
If you would like to try your hand at building your own croquis, or fashion figure template, here is what you will need:
- An 8.5×11 inch paper
- A hard pencil
How to draw a fashion figure
The body proportions of a fashion figure are not proportional to the human body. Generally, a fashion figure follows the industry standard of the ‘nine head’ length: this means the length of a fashion figure is approximately nine times the size of the drawing’s head. These elongated fashion figures help to showcase garments, particularly dresses and skirts.
Here is a step-by-step guide to completing a fashion drawing:
- Draw a vertical line down the center of the paper. This line, which stretches from the head to the feet, will be the fashion figure’s center of balance.
- Separate the paper into nine equal sections. The nine sections will include the fashion figure’s head, bust, waist, hips, thigh, calves, ankles, and feet. You can draw horizontal lines, approximately an inch and one-eighth each, to separate the nine sections.
- Draw the pelvic area. In the middle of the balance line, draw a square for the fashion figure’s pelvis. This can be angled in different directions to create different poses.
- Draw the torso and shoulders. Draw two lines upward from the top of the pelvic square to create the torso. The lines curve inward and outward again to create the waist. The shoulders should be approximately the same width as the pelvis, but the shoulder lines can be angled to create a pose that is rounded forward.
- Draw the neck and head. The neck should be one-third of the shoulder width, and half the length of the head. Draw a circle for the head in proportion to the body.
- Draw the legs. The figure’s legs should be approximately four times the length of the head drawn. The legs are portioned into two sections: the thighs and the calves. The top of the thighs should span the same length as the head. Taper the line down to the knee, and again to the ankle so that the ankles are approximately one fourth the size of the head.
- Draw the arms. Create the arms with tapered lines to the elbow and then again to the wrist. The arms can be positioned alongside the figure’s body or posed on the hips. Finish with the hands and fingers.
- Draw the feet. The feet should be approximately the length of the head.
- Create your fashion design. Now that the fashion figure is sketched, you can begin to build your design creations on top of the figure.
- Illustrate your design. Shade the design to show the movement of the fabric or to highlight where material gathers on the garment. Colour in the fashion drawing to add dimension. Add embellishments to the fabric to demonstrate your own style. Add facial details, a hairstyle and accessories to complete the look.

Skills required for becoming a fashion designer
Fashion careers require a variety of skills. Designers draw on their creativity and artistic sensibilities to create designs. The career demands effective communication skills, an ability to collaborate, and a detail-oriented outlook. Hard skills like the ability to use design software, clothing construction training, and a deep knowledge of textiles and colour also help designers.
Students planning to run their own fashion business also need strong marketing, sales, advertising, and management skills. Self-employed designers draw on sales and product development skills to understand their consumers and create in-demand designs. Overall, fashion designers must balance their passion and creativity with technical and business know-how.
As a fashion designer, the skills below are essential to gaining success in the industry:
1. Artistic ability and creativity
The most important skill for a fashion designer or any artist is a natural talent. You want your art to be recognisable and distinguishable. Many fashion designers had careers as architects, graphic designers, or in other related fields before switching to fashion. Many artistic skills are innate and can’t be taught—however, formal classes and daily practice can help you enhance your skill set.
2. Communication skills
Any top fashion designer needs effective communication skills to develop their brand. Throughout your career, you may have the opportunity to be a part of a design team or lead one of your own. When working with teams, bring your research and ideas to the table instead of waiting for direction. Listening is a large part of collaborating effectively. You aren’t building a collection alone. You have to hear what your teammates are saying in order to provide feedback and push your designs to evolve.
3. Sewing and drawing skills
Sewing is a fundamental skill for any fashion designer. Complete proficiency in basic skills of fashion construction—such as navigating a sewing machine—isn’t necessary, but it would greatly benefit any budding designer to develop an intimate knowledge of the craft involved in producing your designs. Knowing about different fabrics and the properties that make them unique will help you better select the right material for your garments.
4. Understanding of fabrics and materials
You can familiarise yourself with the various elements of garment design by touching fabrics, changing the tension of different stitches, and experimenting with embroidery. Take advantage of resources such as technical classes, online tutorials, and craft books that walk you step by step through the construction of a garment. Selecting fabric is an important part of expressing your ideas. Touch and feel the fabrics you intend to work with; making creative decisions based on only a swatch may limit your ability to understand movement and draping on a human body.
5. Fashion degrees (or lack thereof)
Many fashion schools and degree programs in the United States, like Parsons School of Design or Fashion Institute of Technology, have launched the careers of successful designers, like Marc Jacobs. These programs give you the tools and training to thrive in the business. However, you don’t need a bachelor’s degree in fashion design to become a top designer. Successful fashion designers without traditional design school degrees include Diane von Furstenberg, Karl Lagerfeld, Michael Kors, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander Wang, and Donna Karan.
Here are some additional tips to get you on your way to becoming a top designer .
Fashion designing tips
The career path to becoming a fashion designer doesn’t happen overnight. Though it can take years to break into the business, the following tips will help you get started:
1. Get inspired
Pull inspiration from things you are genuinely interested in: music, art, history, architecture, and especially people. With inspiration flowing, use mood boards to organise and edit your thoughts. Your boards can consist of a wide range of visual references, including editorial sources, street style, and photographs (even if they aren’t related to fashion). You can also compile fabrics, textures, colours, style references, and accessories.
2. Study fashion trends
While you don’t need a fashion degree to design clothes, it helps to have a fundamental knowledge of art, creation, and the fashion business to get you started as a clothing designer. Take sewing or pattern-making classes if you don’t know how to physically create garments, or take a drawing class if you’re unfamiliar with sketching or computer-aided design. Even classes in fashion history can contribute to your design inspiration. Familiarise yourself with the latest fashion trends by studying current fashion shows and magazines.
3. Start smart, not small
Your goal at the beginning of your career is to gain as much experience as you can. Ask questions, reach out to collaborators, and seek out mentors. Look for internships or entry-level positions to get closer to the products you want to create and the customers you hope to serve. If you surround yourself with people who share your excitement and drive, you will push each other to create better products. And most people want to be around others who are excited about what they’re doing.
4. Sketch your ideas
The first goal of a sketch is to begin visualising the design in your head. The second goal of a sketch is to create a blueprint for the patternmaker to create your first muslin or prototype. These minimalistic, flat drawings will communicate the technical elements of your idea, including darts and seams, sleeve length, overall length, fit, shape, and more. You can indicate what fabrics might be used for each garment by attaching a swatch to the page. This gives the patternmaker an idea of the weight or stiffness the garment should have, and whether they are printed, patterned, or solid.
5. Hone your voice and signature style
You don’t have to stay within a particular style, as long as you make thoughtful creative decisions that aid your brand as a designer. All of your creative decisions in the design process—even the details—tell a story.
6. Build your collection
Creating a collection is not a linear journey. You can build a unified collection that presents a singular idea, or your collection can be composed of a variety of looks representing different ideas all connected by your design choices. These might be consistent proportions, colours, or even the lack of colour. You can allow for eclecticism and diversity within the spirit of your collection. Focus your collection to display your point of view. If you choose to limit the colours in your collection, you ought to vary your silhouettes, and vice versa. You can ask your partners, peers, or friends to give their feedback on your designs and how the pieces all fit together.
Fashion design drawings, as you can see, introduces a person to the idea of what an outfit actually looks like, once executed on paper. These drawings are essential to present your ideas to the world. If you are a budding fashion designer, take time to understand the value of possessing drawing skills in the fashion world.

Fashion Illustration : 6 types of fashion drawings you need for designing clothes
A dress starts as an idea in the mind of a designer.
But if it stays there no one will be the wiser. A fashion drawing is the first step in bringing that idea to fruition.
A fashion sketch consists of the figurative fashion drawing of a slightly exaggerated, idealized and stylized human figure (male or female) along with the clothes and accessories adorning it.
You draw the human figure with your clothing design and present everything about the style of clothing, embellishments you want to add on it, then pepper it with the attitude you want to convey with that particular style – there you have your fashion sketch laid out for the world to take notice.
So you can say that a Fashion sketch is the first step in creating beautiful garments
The basic purpose of any drawing is communication. The fashion sketches/ drawings are used by Fashion designers and fashion illustrators to contain their fashion brief and communicate their creative ideas to the people who matter (a client, producer or a designer boss) how a piece of clothing they have in mind would eventually look. The fashion sketch maybe just an outline with the basic silhouette of the garment or contain all the details like what colors combinations work with it, embellishments, darts, pocket positions etc, accessories that go with it, even how much it would cost to produce.
Oh No, But I cannot draw? And I want to be a fashion designer!
So what! Do not worry. You do not need to know how to draw to be a fashion designer. Today there are many options. If you have an idea you can get professional fashion illustrators to sketch it. Then there are computer software programs that can do all the work for you, or you can buy from companies that sell you the templates; they have fashion flat sketches of any garment you could imagine. you can use your computer or your own drawing ability to add your own ideas to it.
But drawing skill is a boon in fashion designing. Drawing as said is a skill and not necessarily a talent. Skill can always be improved upon. Anyone can learn to draw with proper practice and diligent hard work. So not knowing drawing should not be an excuse not to pursue your dreams.
If you join a fashion course you would undergo a training in improving drawing skills.
You can get inspired by the drawings done by others. Pinterest boards like the one here can be sources of inspiration.
How to draw for fashion?
First and foremost you should practice improving hand-eye coordination; this can improve your drawing skills. You can start practicing drawing by sketching someone you know. Maybe they can be persuaded to model for you. The right incentive works every time – like chocolates at my house.
First and foremost study the proportion of the human body thoroughly – The biology books you sold the day exams were over would have been of use now. That is ok. There are even more wonderful books (and not so boring) available to teach you everything about human anatomy as well as the muscle tone and how to draw various poses, how to get the balance line right (the imaginary line that is made from the base of the center of the neck down to the floor which gives the body a balanced proportion and helps in drawing position); how to add your style and movement to the basic figure. You can look at similar drawings made by other designers or figurative photographs in magazines which will guide you in developing your own style.
One easy way is to practice by tracing over a model in a standing pose from a magazine.
What do you need to start fashion drawing?
- Get some good pencils (HB B and 2B pencils are used for drawing shapes and 4B, 6B & 8B pencils are used for shading, highlighting ); charcoal pencils.
- A fashion sketchbook – this is usually an A4 size book ( or A3 or even A5 if you want a small pocket-sized sketchbook for jotting down ideas as they come)
- Bond paper 80 gsm – high quality paper which is suitable for drawing; or Handmade paper with a rough texture to practice sketching; or Cartridge paper is a special type of paper best for illustration and light water colour sketches /paintings. You can buy it in different weights ( a 100 -160 gsm is ideal) and sizes A1, A2, A3, A4.
- Pastel colors and color pencils for filling color. Water-soluble colour pencils can be used to make watercolor effects and if you use a paintbrush along with it to blend the colors no one would be wiser that it is made with a pencil.
- Felt-tipped marker pens or even ballpoint pens
- Scales – for making straight lines with proper measurement
- French curve for making curved drawing
- Tracing paper
- A special no dust eraser that wouldn’t wear the paper.
The fashion sketchbook consists of all the drawings you have made – it is a collection of all your ideas. Sometimes the initial idea is sketched as it comes to you and then you streamline the design, add details to it at a later convenient time and place, maybe somewhere else.
How to draw a human figure in fashion drawing
In fashion sketches, the human body is not drawn the way you have learned to draw in the art and craft class. The proportions are exaggerated and stylized.
The fashion figure is an abstract drawing with elongated arms and legs. They will have adopted a posed stance. ie you will be incorporating poses of hands legs feet etc into your human form to show some style or attitude. You will optionally also be fleshing out the basic form to include facial features, hairstyles, gestures and even accessories.
Yes, for all this you will need to know how the human body is constructed but that does not mean that the exact proportions are maintained in the fashion sketch. The fashion drawing will be a stylized version of the human body with emphasis on certain characteristics or attitudes that the designer wants to emphasize.
The designers usually learn to draw the human body as it is and then adapt their own style of drawing it with practice.
The human figure is usually divided up according to the size of the head. The total height of an adult human being is said to be eight times the length of the head. ( a ratio of 1:8) Whereas the standing fashion figures are proportioned between 9 and 10 heads in height.
In fashion sketching, the legs are elongated, the neck is elongated and the area above the natural waist is also somewhat elongated. This is done so, so that the clothes are properly displayed in their glory and they are the highlight.
Important aspects of a fashion drawing
The main highlight of your fashion sketch should be clothes and nothing else. You are presenting the garment and when drawing you should not lose sight of this. Everything else should be secondary and be complementing your garments.
If you can present the texture of the fabric and the drape of the folds of the fabric you will have a unique drawing. For that, you will have to master some drawing techniques which are easy to master but can create a stunning effect on your final sketch.
The garment is not drawn from one side. You will be asked to present the garment from all sides. If you can get a 3-dimensional view with your drawings you will have a winner of a fashion sketch.
Different types of Fashion drawings
What is a flat.
Also called a flat sketch or fashion flat it refers to 2-dimensional linear drawings (usually in black and white) of the garment (or garments), as it is laid in the flat and drawn from above; Flats are usually made with the help of software programs. It will have all the design details you want to be included in the garment.
What is a tech sketch?
This is a flat sketch with details of the garment written in text (as callouts)
What is a spec ( specification )?
This is a more precise presentation of the garment, with all the specifications included on it like the fabric used, trims used, how much it will cost to produce etc. ; this is used for the manufacturing process.
What is a working drawing?
This is the drawing presented to the pattern maker with all the information needed for him to make the pattern pieces. Fabric swatches, the fasteners used should be included in the comprehensive information passed on with the working drawing.
What is Presentation drawing?
This is the final fashion drawing that a fashion designer makes to present to a client or producer.
What is a fashion croquis?
Croquis means sketch in French; In fashion, this refers to a figurative fashion template. It is the drawing of a figure that can be used as a template over which you can trace and draw a design or garment.

I'm going to draw a fashion related to birds.
Below is an example.
Next, let's draw its features like the side part.
I'll show you some examples.
First, the bird has eyes, a beak, and many feathers.
Have you drawn it?
If you have, let's go to the next step.
Expressing Fashion
If you've finished drawing, let's express the fashion.
First, compare your fashion with the one I drew earlier.
How is it? Is it similar?
If not, let's draw together.

2. Start drawing the pelvic area first. Draw a square with equal side lengths on the balance line just below the middle, where the pelvis is naturally positioned on the body.
