Who Is David Beckham?

Quick facts, early years, soccer career, mls team owner and other ventures, wife and children, netflix docuseries.

A phenom almost from the moment he could first kick a soccer ball, David Beckham fulfilled his childhood dreams of playing for Manchester United, a legendary English team, beginning at age 18. He became a full-time starter in 1995 and remained with the club until 2003. Next, the soccer star played for Spain’s Real Madrid, before signing a five-year contract with the L.A. Galaxy, an MLS team, in 2007. Beckham retired from his professional playing days in 2013. Today, he is a part-owner of Inter Miami CF, among other business interests. He and his wife, Victoria Beckham , have been married since 1999.

FULL NAME: David Robert Joseph Beckham BORN: May 2, 1975 BIRTHPLACE: Leytonstone, London, England SPOUSE: Victoria Beckham (1999-present) CHILDREN: Brooklyn , Romeo, Cruz, and Harper ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Taurus

Born on May 2, 1975, in the Leytonstone area of London, David Robert Joseph Beckham is the only son of Ted Beckham, an appliance repairman, and Sandra West, a hair stylist. A middle child between two sisters, David grew up with a family of committed fans to Manchester United, England’s legendary soccer franchise.

Young Beckham showed his own promise as a footballer, winning the coveted Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools National Skills competition at 11 years old. His talent soon caught the notice of Manchester United team officials, who asked him to try out for the club’s youth league. By age 16, Beckham had left home and was playing for United’s training division. Two years later, he made the club, and by 1995, he was a full-time starter.

best sports documentaries

Beckham wasted little time in making a splash on the English soccer landscape. The talented goal scorer was named the Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year in 1997. A year later, he was one of the leading faces of England’s World Cup team. In 1998, Beckham, who’d already signed a deal with Adidas, netted $13 million in endorsement deals.

In 1999, he led Manchester United to the Premier League title, the FA Cup championship, and the Champions League title. Thanks to a last-minute free kick against Greece in 2001, England qualified for the 2002 World Cup. That same year, Beckham signed a three-year $22 million contract to remain with Manchester United.

But Beckham’s time with United proved to be shorter than anyone thought. In 2003, he was acquired by Real Madrid in a stunner of a deal that brought to light Beckham’s growing rift with Manchester’s then-manager Alex Ferguson.

Spanish soccer fans were thrilled to have their archrival join their team. Americans, meanwhile, were just getting to know him with the release of the 2002 movie Bend It Like Beckham , which follows a young girl who bucks her family’s traditional ways in order to play soccer.

America’s fascination with Beckham and his decade of dominance culminated in 2007 when the soccer great moved across the Atlantic on a reported five-year, $250 million deal with the L.A. Galaxy. The relocation was as much about giving Victoria Beckham ’s career a boost (she helped drive the decision to move to the States) as it was to give America’s MLS a shot in the arm. Within 48 hours of the signing, the Galaxy sold more than 5,000 season tickets.

Beckham’s career after moving to the United States, however, was a rocky one. He was beset by injuries, spraining a knee ligament his first season in Los Angeles, and later missed out on a chance to play in the 2010 World Cup because of an Achilles tendon injury.

On May 16, 2013—just days after winning a title with French club Paris Saint-Germain—the 38-year-old Beckham announced that he would retire at the end of the season, ending his 21-year soccer career.

“I wouldn’t have achieved what I have done today without my family. I’m grateful for my parents’ sacrifice, which made me realize my dreams,” Beckham said in a statement. “I owe everything to Victoria and the kids, who have given me the inspiration and support to play at the highest level for such a long period... If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over 100 times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy. I’m fortunate to have realized those dreams.”

In 2014, Beckham and other investors announced plans to create a new MLS team in Miami. “This is an exciting time for myself, my family, my friends and partners, and it is something we are really looking forward to bringing to Miami,” Beckham said that February. He is the first former athlete to become a team owner in modern MLS history. Inter Miami CF officially launched in January 2018 and had its first game in March 2020. In July 2023, Inter Miami signed all-time great Lionel Messi to the team.

Dating back to his soccer days, Beckham has been involved in various charity work. Most notably, he has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005.

Beckham has been described as one of the world’s wealthiest athletes, with a reported net worth of $450 million . He and his wife, Victoria Beckham, have a combined net worth of $514 million.

Beckham has amassed his fortune from his time as an athlete, as well as his successful business ventures off the field. Forbes estimated he earned $255 million during his six years playing for the MLS (including endorsements and licensing). At the time of his retirement, he was the 7th highest paid athlete of all time, according to The Mirror , with a reported total earnings of $800 million.

An in-demand influencer for years, the soccer star has signed deals with companies such as Adidas, Haig Clubn whisky, Armani, and PepsiCo. In 2012, he started an underwear line for the clothing brand H&M. As part of Beckham’s marketing campaign with H&M, six 10-foot statues of the soccer star in his underwear were installed in New York City; others were installed in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Beckham reportedly boasts a $44 million art collection and spends an average of $46,000 per day on his hobbies, which includes collecting Elvis Presley memorabilia.

David Beckham has been married to Victoria Beckham , also known as Posh Spice of the Spice Girls, since July 4, 1999. Even before meeting her , Beckham predicted to friends that he would one day marry her after watching the 1997 movie Spice World , telling them, “See that one there? I’m going to marry that one.” They met at a Manchester United game in 1997, and the two quickly fell in love. The couple tied the knot at a lavish $800,000 wedding at a castle outside of Dublin.

The couple learned they were pregnant with their first child just before a World Cup match in 1998, which prompted Beckham’s reply: “Oh blimey, you couldn’t have picked a worst time.” Their son Brooklyn Beckham was born in March 1999. The couple have three more children: sons Romeo and Cruz, born in September 2002 and February 2005, respectively; and daughter Harper, born in July 2011.

In 2020, David and Victoria Beckham signed a $20 million contract to create a docuseries with Netflix about their lives. The series, called Beckham , premiered in early October 2023, drawing significant attention from fans of the soccer star, while also drawing him nearly a half million new fans on social media. The documentary included several revelations about the Beckham couple, including how they fell in love, details about their lives together, and how they responded to negative chants from soccer fans.

One of the most attention-grabbing moments of Beckham was one in which the couple directly addressed rumors that David reportedly cheated on his wife with model Rebecca Loos (who wasn’t identified by name in the series) while playing in Spain in 2003, which he has vehemently denied. “It was a nightmare,” Victoria said . “It was an absolute circus—and everyone loves it when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you’re in it.” Roos said she endured many “disgusting” remarks on social media as a result of the Netflix series.

Recent News

David Beckham (born May 2, 1975, Leytonstone, East London , England) is an English football (soccer) player who gained international fame for his on-field play as well as for his highly publicized personal life.

At age 11 Beckham won a football contest, and as a teenager he competed on Manchester United ’s youth squad, leading it to a national championship in 1992. Three years later he began playing with the professional team in league competition, and during the 1995–96 season he helped Manchester United win the league title and the Football Association (FA) Cup. Beckham attracted national attention in August 1996 when he scored a goal from the halfway line (a feat roughly equivalent to a golfer’s hole in one). The following year Manchester United successfully defended its league title, and Beckham was voted Young Player of the Year. In the 1998–99 season Manchester United won the league title, the FA Cup, and the European Cup. Beckham was named best midfielder and Most Valuable Player. Considered one of the sport’s elite players, he was perhaps best known for his free kicks and crosses; the 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham paid homage to his kicking ability. After helping Manchester United win three more league titles (2000, 2001, and 2003), he left the team in 2003 to join the Spanish football club Real Madrid . Four years later he signed a record-setting deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States . In October 2008 Beckham signed to play with Italian football powerhouse AC Milan during the MLS off-season. In 2011 he helped the Galaxy win an MLS Cup title. The Galaxy won a second MLS Cup title in 2012, and Beckham left the team at the end of the season. In 2013 he joined the French first-league team Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and PSG won the French domestic title in his one season with the team. Beckham retired from football soon after winning his championship with PSG.

In 1996 Beckham first played on England’s national team, in a World Cup qualifying match. At the 1998 World Cup he drew much criticism after he was ejected from a game for kicking an opponent. England lost the match and was eliminated from the competition. In 2000 Beckham was made captain of the national team. At the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, England was defeated in the quarterfinals. After the 2006 tournament, Beckham stepped down as captain, and he was later dropped from England’s national team. He was recalled to the team in 2007, and the following year he posted his 100th international appearance, becoming the fifth person to do so in the history of English football. Beckham was poised to be the first Englishman to appear in four World Cups, but he tore his Achilles tendon while playing for AC Milan in March 2010 and was ruled out for the 2010 tournament. A healthy but older Beckham was not selected for the English side at the 2012 European Championship , and he finished his national career with 115 international games played, the most in his country’s history for a non-goalkeeper.

After his playing days ended, Beckham remained involved in soccer. He notably was the owner and president of the MLS team Inter Miami CF, which made its debut in 2020.

David and Victoria Beckham

In 1999 Beckham married singer Victoria Adams , best known as “Posh Spice” of the Spice Girls pop group, in a lavish ceremony. The intense media attention to the couple increased Beckham’s popularity around the world, as did his style of dress and ever-changing hairstyles. In 2003 he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He released an eponymous memoir in 2014.

T hese days, David Beckham is known for many things, but he first came to prominence as a football player. With his powerful right foot, passing ability, and signature curled free-kicks, he established himself as one of Britain’s greatest football stars. During his 20-year career, he won 19 major trophies for his clubs and appeared in 115 games for England. In 2004, Pelé named Beckham one of the 100 greatest living players.

Birth of a star

David Beckham was born 2 May 1975, as the second child to Sandra Georgina and David Edward Alan Beckham, and grew up in a part of East London called Leytonstone. He played football from a very early age, impassioned by the sport, he dreamed about being a professional as an adult.

After starting his youth career at the local Ridgeway Rovers, Beckham made his way to Manchester United in 1991. He made the senior team debut in 1992, around the same time as the rest of the famous “Fergie’s Fledglings.” He soon became a starter at the right midfield position, claiming the No. 7 shirt from Mark Hughes. In the 1996 Premier League opener against Wimbledon , Beckham became a household name by scoring a lob from the halfway line.

Beckham remained at United until 2003, helping them win six Premier League titles and one European Cup. He would play more games in the United shirt (386), than in any other, however, due to his increasingly glamorous lifestyle, his relationship with coach Alex Ferguson slowly deteriorated. The issues came to a head once Ferguson kicked a boot that struck Beckham in the eye, causing a cut that needed to be stitched. Unable to mend their relationship, United sold Beckham to Real Madrid for €37 million.

International incidents

At the international stage, Beckham had another share of controversies to worry about. He made his tournament debut at the 1998 World Cup , though manager Glen Hoddle initially used him as a substitute. In the round of 16 match against Argentina , Beckham was sent off for kicking Diego Simeone while lying on the pitch. England eventually lost the match on penalties, and Beckham became the main target of abuse by both the fans and media.

By Euro 2000, things didn’t improve. Despite earning two assists in a 2-3 defeat to Portugal in the tournament opener, Beckham was taunted by fans throughout the match, and he finally responded by raising his middle finger. Though this actually improved his image in the media, England was eliminated in the group stage. For the 2002 World Cup , Beckham was promoted to team captain, but England was unable to get past Brazil in the quarter-finals.

In Real, Beckham joined Ronaldo , Zidane , Figo , and Raύl in a squad known as Galácticos. For all the talent on display, though, Real struggled to win any trophies in Beckham’s first three seasons with the club. Despite this lack of team success, Beckham was turning in solid performances, and led La Liga in assists in 2005.

This turbulent period culminated in a surprising defeat to Arsenal in the last 16 of the 2006 Champions League. Following this loss, Florentino Pérez resigned as president, and Real started veering away from the Galácticos era. Under new manager Fabio Capello, Beckham was initially out of favor. However, he made a comeback in the second part of the season, helping Real reach its first La Liga title in four years.

Internationally, Beckham’s final major tournament was the 2006 World Cup . He played a big part in getting England to the quarter-finals, scoring a free-kick winner in the round of 16 against Ecuador. Before the quarter-final match against Portugal, he suffered from illness and dehydration, and was substituted shortly after half-time. Portugal went on to win the game on penalties. A day later, Beckham announced he was stepping down as team captain.

From LA to Paris

In between the MLS seasons, Beckham kept trying to stay fit for the national team. This resulted in two separate loans to Milan in 2009 and 2010, the latter of which saw him get injured and miss the 2010 World Cup and a big part of the following season for LA Galaxy. In 2013, Beckham signed a five-month deal with Paris Saint-Germain , helping them claim a Ligue 1 title. At the end of the season, he retired from football.

LONDON (AP) — David Beckham delves back into the hateful treatment he received following his infamous 1998 World Cup red card — and its impact on him — in a new Netflix documentary series pegged to the 10th anniversary of his retirement.

“This whole process has been like an emotional rollercoaster,” Beckham said of the “Beckham” series in an exclusive video interview with The Associated Press. “I’ve never talked about these certain moments in my career and in my life.”

The intimate four-part series explores Beckham’s upbringing, his courtship with his wife and his triumphs on the field, but perhaps the most difficult part was revisiting his painful sending off during England’s World Cup match against Argentina.

“I hadn’t actually watched it and I hadn’t actually watched the interviews and what people said about me after,” he said, adding that it left him “shocked and emotional.”

Beckham was red carded for deliberately kicking the back of Diego Simeone’s leg. He lashed out after the Argentina captain pushed him to the ground. England’s World Cup hopes were crushed, and Beckham instantly went from hero to villain.

“Beckham” includes footage of the hatred the soccer star received — condemnation in British tabloids and constant fan abuse, including one who hung his effigy from a noose outside a London pub.

“I knew it was bad at the time, but going over that whole that whole thing was quite a tough one,” he told the AP.

The backlash continued throughout the next season.

“It wasn’t just stepping onto a football pitch, it was every time that I went out in my car and people stopped me and spat at my window and you know, all of those things, and then walking into a restaurant knowing that everybody in there hates you.”

Best friend David Gardner recalls how Beckham even had to be accompanied by friends in the bathroom for his safety, yet never retaliated.

Despite the full support of Manchester United fans and club manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Beckham said there wasn’t the same knowledge or concern about mental health that exists now.

“Back then there wasn’t anyone turning round to me and saying, ‘Are you OK? Are you sure you’re OK? Let’s talk about it.’”

Even his own family struggled to understand. “Twenty five years ago, if I’d have turned around to my dad and said that I don’t feel great, he would have said, ‘Boy, just get on with it’. So that’s how I grew up and that’s how I knew how to kind of handle a situation like that,” he said.

“I became, I wouldn’t say a cold person, but I was able to block things out that were challenging and difficult for me at the time” he added, saying it helped him grow as a player and as a person.

“I’m not a person that sits and reflects on past achievements and things like that” Beckham said, explaining that he learned from an early age that you can win a trophy and celebrate that evening, “but then the next day you’re on to the next season and you’re on to something else. “

The first episode, which debuts Oct. 4, explores young David’s upbringing in Chingford, Essex, and his relationship with his father.

“He was a very disciplined dad from a very early age. And when I didn’t play well, he told me and when I did play well, he kind of told me that I did play well, but not too much,” Beckham said with a smile.

It had always been his father’s dream that his son play in the premiership for Manchester United and it soon became their shared dream, turned reality. After being spotted by a scout playing on London’s Hackney Marshes, Beckham moved to Manchester at 15. The tough love continued under Ferguson. Their partnership helped Beckham win six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League.

“Without a doubt, me getting out of London at that time and becoming a Manchester United player, in the north, surrounded by unbelievable people -- that for me without doubt helped me have the success and have the career that I had had and have,” he said. “Having the discipline of Sir Alex Ferguson possibly was one of the biggest reasons why I was able to succeed.”

But the discipline didn’t rub off when it comes to his own four children Brooklyn, Romeo , Cruz and Harper Seven, who all appear in the documentary. Beckham admits his wife is “pretty strict” and he finds it hard to lay down the law.

“I always thought growing up, if I was to become a young dad, I would be like my dad. I would support my kids with going into football and be hard with them. But I was nowhere near like my dad was. I’m a bit of a softie.”

Meeting Spice Girl Victoria Adams was a pivotal moment in Beckham’s life. She was already a global superstar as “Posh Spice” and he was a rising talent with Manchester United.

“It wasn’t something that normally happens, you know, a footballer and a pop star coming together and the pressures of that but also her being on the world tour, me really wanting to see her. But obviously I couldn’t travel. So, we used to sneak around.”

He said they managed to keep their relationship secret for the first few months and then “the explosion happened.”

Beckham’s teammate and close friend Gary Neville jokes on “Beckham” about the pair’s long phone calls into the early hours before a game and says Beckham would drive for four hours just to spend 20 minutes with her. Neville and Gardner are executive producers on “Beckham,” with Beckham’s Studio 99 among the film’s production companies.

Part three and four of the series were not available for review prior to Beckham’s interview, but those episodes explore his explosive fallout with Ferguson, his sale to Real Madrid and tabloid allegations of Beckham’s extra-marital affairs.

“There are pressures, but you work hard,” Beckham said of his marriage. And despite press speculation, the couple recently celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary and remain a united force.

“I suppose that’s one of the reasons why we’re so, so strong as a couple, because, yes, we have amazing kids, we have amazing careers, but we … make time for each other as well.“

Beckham’s career spread far beyond his success as a player to cultural icon and entrepreneur. He was a trailblazer for collaborations with brands like Adidas, Armani, Breitling and more. While players weren’t really doing similar deals at the time, he said it felt like a natural progression enabled by his success on the football pitch.

He knew early on that “Brand Beckham” would broaden and lengthen his career if he could achieve a good balance.

“I always made sure that whatever I was doing off the field never affected what I was doing on the field because that was what I loved and what was important to me.”

His business savvy culminated in ownership of his own soccer team , Inter Miami.

“I had the opportunity to play in different countries, move to America, obviously have my own franchise and my own team, become an owner,” he said. “So then once I finished playing, I knew that the moment I finished playing, I could then jump into the business. But, we were working on that a long time before that.”

Looking back on his career’s highs and lows, it’s natural to wonder: Does Beckham have regrets?

“Do I wish things hadn’t happened? Absolutely. Do I wish ’98 hadn’t happened? Absolutely.”

But he said he realized it all happened for a reason.

“It made me stronger as a person, as a player, as a human being, and as a father, as a husband,” he said. “And if that hadn’t have happened, I maybe I wouldn’t have had the career that I had.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Arguably one of world football’s biggest names, David Beckham is a global phenomenon but a part of him will be forever Red.

A decade spent marauding up United’s right wing contributed to the most successful period in the club’s history, and his 57-yard strike against Wimbledon is surely one of the most replayed goals of all time. He followed in the footsteps of his boyhood idol Bryan Robson by eventually captaining England, and he is the only England player to have scored in three different World Cups. The story began in July 1991 when a lifelong United fan moved north from Leytonstone to sign apprentice forms for the Reds. He formed part of the Class of ‘92 that won the FA Youth Cup along with Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville but had to wait for his league debut - at home to Leeds United on 2 April 1995. The departure of Andrei Kanchelskis freed up a place of the right of midfield, and Beckham made it his own. Bagging the winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea proved he was a man for the big occasion, and the season ended with United winning a second Double. Beckham began the 1996/97 campaign with that goal from the halfway line at Selhurst Park and a month later began his England journey with a debut against Moldova. That season brought another Premiership medal, but in 1998 Arsenal took the title back as Beckham headed for the World Cup in France. After being left out of the starting line-up for England’s first two matches, he then scored a stunning free-kick against Colombia and was hailed a national hero. It wasn’t to last. Facing Argentina in the second round, he was sent off for a foul on Diego Simeone and ten-man England were knocked out. Mocked by the press and vilified by fans across the country, he was welcomed back into the arms of the United family. Beckham responded by scoring a trademark free-kick against Leicester City in the first Premier League game of 1998/99, and went on to enjoy a season that would have been beyond his wildest dreams as the Reds won the Treble. Among his many contributions to that glorious campaign were the equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur in the final league fixture, as Sir Alex Ferguson's men came from behind to clinch the title at Old Trafford, and the two corners from which United scored last-gasp goals through Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. The following season brought his fourth Premiership winner's medal and Beckham was voted the second best player in Europe and the world as Rivaldo of Barcelona and Brazil pipped him to both awards. 2000/01 was another Premiership-winning season and having been handed the England captaincy he almost single-handedly booked his country’s place in the 2002 World Cup finals with an incredible match-winning performance against Greece at Old Trafford. Ever the trend-setter, Beckham introduced the world to the word 'metatarsal' when he broke his foot in a Champions League match against Deportivo La Coruna but recovered in time to score a redemptive penalty against Argentina in the World Cup. The next season proved to be his final one at Old Trafford and after months of speculation, Beckham made the switch to Real Madrid in the summer of 2003 but not before picking up his fifth Premiership medal and signing off in style with a final free-kick goal in his last United game against Everton. Beckham spent four seasons in Spain, winning La Liga in the last of those, before signing for LA Galaxy, where he won two MLS Cups. Two loan spells with AC Milan followed before he moved to Paris Saint-Germain in January 2013 and helped them to win their first French league title for 19 years. He played his last competitive match before retiring from football, Lorient v PSG, on 26 May 2013 - also the 14th anniversary of his finest hour in a United shirt, the night when the Treble was won.

Short Biography of David Beckham

david beckham

Beckham is the 2nd most capped England player of all time (115). He is also the only Englishman to score in three different World Cups. Beckham has twice been voted the runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year.  He was captain of the English national team from 15 November 2000 to 2 July 2006.

Beckham’s career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first first-team appearance in 1992, at the age of 17. While with Manchester United he played a key role in their dominance of the FA Premier League, being pivotal in accomplishing The Treble of the League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 1999. During this time, he was managed by Alex Ferguson . Allegedly Ferguson once threw a shoe at Beckham in the changing room. Though, despite their differences, they have mutual respect.

“Alex Ferguson is the best manager I’ve ever had at this level. Well, he’s the only manager I’ve actually had at this level. But he’s the best manager I’ve ever had.”

– David Beckham.

In 1999, he married Victoria (one of the Spice Girls). The marriage attracted great media attention. His football manager, Alex Ferguson later criticised this by saying:

“He was never a problem until he got married. He used to go into work with the academy coaches at night time, he was a fantastic young lad. Getting married into that entertainment scene was a difficult thing – from that moment, his life was never going to be the same. He is such a big celebrity, football is only a small part.”

The couple have four children.

However, Ferguson also later paid tribute to how hard David Beckham worked – in particular at gaining accuracy in free kicks.

“David Beckham is Britain’s finest striker of a football not because of God-given talent but because he practises with a relentless application that the vast majority of less gifted players wouldn’t contemplate.” (May 17, 2013, Guardian )

David Beckham

In 2006, after England’s exit at the World Cup in Germany, he stood down as captain and was then succeeded by Chelsea captain John Terry. Beckham was dropped from the England national team selected by coach Steve McClaren on 11 August 2006.

In his first world cup, David Beckham was sent off in the quarter-final against Argentina for a petulant kick – a game England went on to lose. This made him a public enemy number one. However, he redeemed himself during the next few seasons. In particular, his spectacular last-minute free kick against Greece to enable England to qualify for the 2002 World Cup finals.

“People react to criticism in different ways, and my way is definitely to come out fighting.”

– David Beckham

David Beckham and Los Angeles Galaxy 2007-08

At the end of the 2006 -07 Spanish season, David was unable to negotiate a new contract with Real Madrid. Therefore, he was free to negotiate a new contract. The best offer came from American football team LA Galaxy. The money was very good and his wife Victoria was keen on the idea of moving to America.

After negotiating the contract there was a sudden improvement in the form of David Beckham. He even earned a recall to the England team under Steve McClaren. There were also last-minute attempts by Real Madrid to secure the services of Beckham. However, the contract was done and Beckham moved to America.

David Beckham and A.C. Milan

In the US, Beckham felt he was missing out on European football, and that this had cost him a better chance of being picked for England. In 2010, he managed to secure a temporary loan to A.C. Milan. This has become a source of friction with his L.A. Galaxy employers as he seems to place playing in Europe above America.

David Beckham and World Cup bid

David Beckham, as one of England’s highest-profile players, was used in the successful 2012, London Olympic bid, and the unsuccessful 2018, England World Cup bid.

2012 Olympics

To the disappointment of many, David Beckham was left out of the Great Britain squad playing in the London Olympics. It was felt after Beckham’s efforts to bring the Olympics to London, he deserved a fitting international swansong. However, the manager, Stuart Pearce didn’t pick him. Beckham played a role in the opening ceremony and was visible during the games.

2013 Signing for Paris St Germain

In January 2013, David Beckham signed a five-month contract to play for French La Ligue 1 side – Paris St Germain. The 37 year old said he would donate his £1 million salary to a local children’s charity. Despite speculation about when Beckham may retire, he says he’s motivated by his desire to continue playing football for as long as he can. As Beckham says:

“People have been speculating about that for a number of years, but I continue to play and sign contracts. I will see how I feel but I want to play as long as possible. My passion is football. It always has been. When I play football it is not about the biggest contract.” ( BBC )

Recently, Beckham has been based in the US where he plans to start a new MLS franchise in Miami, with Beckham as the principal owner. Beckham has also launched his own line of fragrance for men and has 40 tattoos. He has appeared on the front of many magazine covers and is an influential fashion figure.

David Beckham

  • Born May 2 , 1975 · Leytonstone, London, England, UK
  • Birth name David Robert Joseph Beckham
  • Golden Balls
  • Height 6′ (1.83 m)
  • David Beckham is one of Britain's most iconic athletes whose name is also an elite global advertising brand. He was captain of the English national team from 2000 to 2009, scored in three different FIFA World Cups, and played midfield for clubs in Manchester, England, Madrid, Spain, and Milan, Italy; he also won the MLS Cup playing for Los Angeles Galaxy in 2011 and 2012. He was born David Robert Joseph Beckham on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, East London, England, to Sandra Georgina (West), a hairdresser, and David Edward Alan "Ted" Beckham, a kitchen fitter. Beckham's maternal grandfather was Jewish, and David has mentioned the religion as an influence; he wears a tattoo written in Hebrew from the 'Song of Songs' in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), albeit he is not known to practice Judaism or any other faith. Beckham has always played in long sleeve shirts to cover up his tattoos in consideration of others who may feel uncomfortable due to their beliefs. He was brought up by his parents, supporters of Manchester United, attended Bobby Charlton 's football school in Manchester, and won a spot in a training session at FC Barcelona as a child. In 1986 he was a Manchester United's mascot for a match against West Ham United. From 1992 - 2003 Beckham made almost 400 appearances for Manchester United and scored 85 goals, although his official record counts only 62 goals in 265 official senior team's matches. In the 1998 FIFA World Cup he played all of England's qualifying matches and scored in several important victories. He received a red card for violent conduct in England's match against Argentina, albeit his opponent later admitted to trying to send Beckham off by over-reacting to their contact during the game and by urging the referee to send Beckham off. After losing the game England was eliminated, Beckham was made a scapegoat and became the target of criticism and abuse in media. He had a good season in 1999 - 2000 and helped Manchester United to win the Premier League. At that time, he married singer Victoria Beckham (nee' Adams) from the popular musical group The Spice Girls, and the couple had their first son, Brooklyn, born in 1999. That same year, Beckham was given a permission to miss training routine, in order to look after his son Brooklyn, who suffered from a stomach infection. Meanwhile, the Manchester United's manager, Alex Ferguson , fined Beckham £50,000 (about $80,000 then) the maximum amount that was permitted, for babysitting with his sick child, while his wife was spotted at a London fashion Week event on the same night. Ferguson's claim that Beckham should be able to train if his wife stayed home that day, caused a serious personal tension between two men. In February 2003, following the defeat to Arsenal, the Manchester United's manager Alex Ferguson entered the changing room and kicked a football boot that struck Beckham over the eye, causing a cut that required stitches. David Beckham has been a good scorer and a major attraction for public. On the field he has been demonstrating his consistent ability to see a big picture even under severe pressure during the most rapidly changing and unpredictable games. His field vision has been remarkable, allowing him to create many assists in a number of important matches. Beckham's forte has been his delivery from the right-hand side as well as his efficient free kicks. His superior performances in the midfield position has required a higher physical endurance through the entire game. "David Beckham's right foot" was mentioned, although humorously, as one of British national treasures in the movie Love Actually (2003) . He signed a four-year contract with Real Madrid, beginning on July 1, 2003, and worth a potential 40 million dollars. In Madrid, Beckham was not allowed to wear his favorite number seven, because another player had the right to wear it written into his contract. Beckham decided to wear the number 23 instead, being a big fan of Michael Jordan . He immediately became popular with the Real Madrid fans, but the team did not perform well enough to win either the Spanish League or the Champions League. However, Beckham remained a reliable scorer and his performances attracted more public. His shirts sales and other merchandising deals remained lucrative for the club, which continued to under-perform, regardless of the Real's management's higher expectations. In 2005 Beckham became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. He was also involved in promoting London's successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. His third season in Madrid was unremarkable, and he was criticized a lot, mainly because the team finished second to Barcelona in Spanish "La Liga" and lost to Arsenal in the European Champions League. However, during that season, he expanded his international presence by establishing football academies in Los Angeles and East London. During the FIFA World Cup 2006, he played for England, and became the first ever English player to score in three World Cups. In the quarter final game against Portugal, Beckham was replaced because of his injury in the middle of the game. Without him the English team lost and was knocked out of the World Cup. In June 2007 Beckham played his final game for Real Madrid, winning a medal and celebrating with his friends Tom and Katie Cruse, who attended the game. This was his fourth, and last season there, ending his contract with the club. He announced that he had signed a five-year contract to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy from July 1, 2007 through June 2012. The 5-year deal includes up to $10 million a year in direct salary, and with merchandising endorsements and profit-sharing could earn Beckham up to $50 million a year, and may end up worth about $250 million in five years, making him one of the highest earning athletes of all time. In 2009, in a unique time share agreement David played on loan at AC Milan to maintain his fitness after ending the season with the Galaxy. He ended up staying with Milan for five months, from January to May 2009. In 2010, he also arranged to embark on a second loan spell at AC Milan from the Galaxy, to play for Milan for another five months. He said that he "genuinely enjoyed playing for Milan." In 2011, after winning his first MLS Cup, his five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy ended. At that time, Beckham was invited to play for Paris Saint-Germain. But the 36-year-old player said "My family and I are incredibly happy and settled in America and we look forward to spending many more years here... I am still passionate about playing in America and winning trophies with the Galaxy" he stated after signing another two-year contract with the Los Angeles club. In 2012, Beckham helped the Los Angeles Galaxy to retain their championship by defeating the Houston Dynamo 3-1 in the final game and winning the MLS Cup 2012. His last appearance for Los Angeles was on December 2, 2012. Beckham's jersey No 23 has been the best selling in the MLS and one of the best in the world, as he expands his image as one of sport's leading icons. Although he plays his best in the right of midfield, Beckham can be dangerous anywhere in the field and can make a difference in a big game with a pass, a cross, or a free kick. Arguably no one in the game can rival Beckham's accuracy in free kicks, as he can put that ball on a teammate's head with uncanny precision. He is still a decisive player, regardless of age. In January 2013, David Beckham signed a 5 month contract with Paris Saint-Germain. The Beckhams, who have become known as "Posh and Becks", have four children: three sons - Brooklyn Joseph Beckham (born 1999, in London), Romeo James Beckham (born 2002, in London), Cruz David Beckham (born 2005, in Madrid), and daughter Harper Seven (born in 2011, in Los Angeles). - IMDb Mini Biography By: Steve Shelokhonov

David beckham videos, david beckham: a brief biography, club career, international career, awards and achievements, personal life.

David Beckham OBE is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-winger. He is best known for his time at Manchester United and Real Madrid where he was considered to be one of the greatest midfielders of all time. He was renowned for his passing, crossing, and bending free kicks.

He is currently the president and co-owner of Major League Soccer side Inter Miami CF and co-owner of League 2 side Salford City.

David Beckham was born on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, London, England. He inherited his parents’ passion for the game and started showing markings of a promising career from an early age. He started playing for local club Ridgeway Rovers at the age of 10 before being scouted by Tottenham in 1987, with whom he trained for a two-year period. Manchester United came calling in 1991, with whom he signed a youth contract at the age of 16, and carried the team to a victory in the FA Youth Cup.

Beckham made his professional debut for Manchester United in 1994 at the age of 19, in a league match against Port Vale. He was then sent out on loan to Preston North End for the remainder of the season, where he scored 2 goals in 5 appearances, one of which came in the form of an outstanding corner kick.

Following his return to Manchester United, Beckham swiftly rose up the ranks and secured a spot for himself in the first team. The 1995-96 season saw him carrying his team to a victory in both FA Cup and the Premier League title.

On the first day of the League in the next season, Beckham scored an unbelievable goal from the half line against Wimbledon which made him a household name and began an unparalleled journey of greatness. United retained its title that season and Beckham was awarded the PFA Player of the year.

In the 1998-1999 season, Beckham helped his side win the treble of the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup, with Beckham playing vital roles in each of them. United won the League in the next two seasons as well to become the fourth club to achieve this feat.

While performing wonders for United, Beckham's international presence was no less prolific. Following a disappointing 1998 World Cup, Beckham emerged as a national hero in 2001 when he hammered his trademark curler into the net against Greece to qualify for the World Cup. Beckham was voted as the BBC Sports Personality for the year 2001 and finished as the runner-up for the FIFA World Player of the year award.

Beckham decided to leave Manchester United in 2003 as the second longest-serving player to join La Liga giants Real Madrid. His controversy-laden association with Madrid lasted four years during which Madrid won the League in the 2006-07 season and the Supercopa de Espania in 2003.

Beckham joined LA Galaxy in 2007 for a deal reported to be a whopping 250 million dollars. The high-profile acquisition marked the beginning of Beckham's much-publicized association with the club. Staying with the club for 5 years, Beckham was awarded the MLS players of the year twice and carried his side to League titles in 2011 as well as 2012.

2013 saw him moving to PSG where he made 10 goalless appearances before announcing his retirement

Beckham made his debut for the England national team in 1996 in the World Cup qualifier against Moldova at the age of 21. He then went on the play the subsequent qualifiers and also represented the team in the 1998 World Cup.

In the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Beckham captained the England team and scored the crucial penalty in the round of 16 match against Argentina, which England won 1-0. However, England lost to eventual finalists Brazil in the quarter-finals.

Beckham continued to represent England in the subsequent years, and he was named captain of the team in 2006. He played in the 2006 World Cup in Germany but suffered a metatarsal injury in the quarter-finals, which ended his tournament prematurely.

He announced his retirement from international football in 2009, having earned 115 caps for England and scored 17 goals.

Beckham is the only player to win league titles in four different countries: England, Spain, the United States, and France.

Holds the record for the highest transfer fee paid for a player by an MLS team, with LA Galaxy paying a reported $32.5 million to sign him from Real Madrid in 2007.

First English player to score in three FIFA World Cup tournaments (1998, 2002, 2006).

The Sport Review

David Beckham

English former footballer.

The Sport Review Staff

David Beckham is an English former footballer who played for the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid.

• Date of birth: 2 May 1975 • Age: 49 years old • Place of birth: London, United Kingdom • Wife: Victoria (married in 1999) • Nationality: English • Height: 183cm / 6ft 0ins • Net Worth: £380m / $464m (Sunday Times, 2022)

The 49-year-old is one of the best-known footballers of his generation and he enjoyed lots of success at club level with both Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Born in London in 1975, Beckham started his youth footballing career with Tottenham Hotspur, before eventually moving into Manchester United’s academy as a trainee in 1991.

He made his first-team debut for Manchester United in 1992, and enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Red Devils in the 1995-96 campaign.

With Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, Beckham won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League, before he eventually left to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2003.

A former England captain, Beckham spent four years with Real Madrid, winning La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, before moving to LA Galaxy in 2007. Beckham – who lifted a total of 19 trophies, including 10 league titles – spent time on loan to AC Milan before finishing his career at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

So, what do we know about Beckham’s journey to becoming one of the top footballers in the world? This is his story.

Early Life, Parents And Upbringing

David Beckham (full name: David Robert Joseph Beckham) was born on 2 May 1975 in London, England, to parents Sandra and David (Ted). His mother was a hairdresser, while his father was a kitchen fitter.

Beckham was given his middle name, Robert, in honour of Bobby Charlton, his father’s favourite footballer. David is one of three siblings – he has an older sister, Lynne Georgina, and a younger sister, Joanne Louise.

David had a passion for football from a young age and always wanted to pursue a career in the sport. Speaking in 2007, Beckham said: “At school whenever the teachers asked, ‘What do you want to do when you’re older?’ I’d say, ‘I want to be a footballer.’ And they’d say, ‘No, what do you really want to do, for a job?’. But that was the only thing I ever wanted to do.”

Beckham’s parents were both faithful Manchester United supporters and often travelled from London to watch the Red Devils in action at Old Trafford.

Manchester United

After attracting the attention of a scout while playing for Waltham Forest under-12s, he was given a trial at Manchester United. In the end, David had to make a decision about signing for Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester United, and he opted for the Red Devils.

Aged 16, Beckham left home and signed for Manchester United as a trainee on 8 July 1991.

Beckham was part of the team that won the FA Youth Cup with the Red Devils in 1992, along with the likes of Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes.

He made his professional debut for the Red Devils on 23 September 1992 in a League Cup match against Brighton and Hove Albion. David then scored his first goal for Manchester United in a 4-0 victory over Galatasaray on 7 December 1994 in the Champions League.

After a brief spell on loan to Preston North End, Beckham made his Premier League debut for Manchester United on 2 April 1995 in a goalless draw against Leeds United. Beckham’s first Premier League goal came on 19 August 1995, when he netted in a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa away from home.

Beckham went on to establish himself as Manchester United’s first-choice right-sided midfielder and netted a total of 62 goals in 265 league games in the next eight seasons.

He helped the Red Devils to win six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League during a trophy-laden spell under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

In total, Beckham scored 85 goals in 394 games in all competitions for Manchester United.

In the summer of 2003, speculation about Beckham’s future at Manchester United was starting to gather pace, and a move to Spain beckoned.

Real Madrid

On 18 June 2003, it was announced that Beckham would be joining Real Madrid on a four-year contract for a fee of £24.5m.

At the time, Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon said : “While we are sad to see David go after so many great years at Old Trafford, we believe this is a good deal for the club, and we now look forward to building on the success of last season’s championship title. We wish David all the best in his new career in Spain and thank him for his fantastic contribution to the team’s achievements in the last decade.”

Speaking in an interview with FourFourTwo back in 2006, Beckham explained how he felt about his move to Real Madrid, which was shrouded in controversy.

“I’d always said that if I ever had to leave United – which I never thought I would do – then I would be going to Real Madrid,” Beckham said. “And I would decide my future. I was angry that I was leaving Man United – it’s the club I’ve always supported, the club I started my career at and I thought I’d end my career at.”

Beckham made his competitive debut for Real Madrid in the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana against Mallorca on 24 August 2003. Beckham then scored his first goal for the club in the return leg in a 3–0 win at home.

During his four seasons with Real Madrid, Beckham scored 13 goals in 116 La Liga games for the Spanish side, helping them to win the title in his final campaign at the club in 2006-07. In total, Beckham netted 20 goals in 155 games in all competitions for Real Madrid.

On 11 January 2007, it was confirmed that Beckham would be leaving Real Madrid that summer to join MLS side LA Galaxy.

“I’m coming there not to be a superstar,” Beckham said of his move to America back in 2007. “I’m coming there to be part of the team, to work hard and to hopefully win things. With me, it’s about football. I’m coming there to make a difference. I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t think I could make a difference.”

Beckham made his MLS debut for LA Galaxy on 9 August 2007 as a substitute in an away game against DC United. He then scored his first goal for the American club on 15 August 2007, again against DC United, in the SuperLiga semi-final.

During his six years with LA Galaxy – which included two loan stints at AC Milan – Beckham scored 18 league goals in 98 games for the club. In total, he netted 20 goals in 118 games for LA Galaxy. He won the MLS Cup in both 2011 and 2012 with the club.

Beckham returned to Europe to sign for Paris Saint-Germain from LA Galaxy on 31 January 2013. He penned a five-month deal with the Ligue 1 side.

He made his debut for PSG on 24 February 2013, when he came off the bench in the 76th minute in a Ligue 1 home match against Marseille.

On 16 May 2013, Beckham announced that he was retiring from playing professional football. He was made captain for his final home game against Brest on 18 May 2013, his final appearance for the club.

“If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over 100 times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy,” said Beckham. “I’m fortunate to have realised those dreams.”

During his decorated career, Beckham lifted a total of 19 trophies, including 10 league titles.

International Career

Beckham made his first appearance for the England national team on 1 September 1996, in a World Cup qualifier against Moldova.

His first goal for England came at the 1998 World Cup, when he netted a brilliant free-kick against Colombia in a 2-0 win in the group stage.

Beckham was then shown a straight red card in England’s next match against Argentina for kicking out at Diego Simeone while lying on the floor, after having been fouled by his opponent.

The midfielder faced heavy criticism back in England after the Three Lions were knocked out of the tournament on penalties following Beckham’s sending off.

David Beckham

“It hurt at the time,” Beckham said of the criticism that headed his way in an interview in 2006. “But what I really think about when I look back to that time is the way Man United fans were to me. Every time I took a corner for two years – two years! – the United fans were on their feet, clapping me, cheering me, singing my name. All I had to do was step towards the corner flag and they’d be doing that. That support was amazing. On the pitch, it made everything a lot easier.”

In November 2000, Beckham was made England captain by caretaker manager Peter Taylor, and then kept the role under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Beckham was the hero for his country on 6 October 2001 in their final World Cup qualifying game against Greece at Wembley. The Three Lions needed to win or draw the match to qualify for the 2002 World Cup but were trailing 2-1 with little time remaining. Beckham then curled home a brilliant trademark curling free-kick in the 93rd minute.

“To this day, one of my proudest achievements is captaining my country,” Beckham said . “I knew every time I wore the Three Lions shirt, I was not only following in a long line of great players, I was also representing every fan that cared passionately about their country.

“I want people to see me as a hardworking footballer – someone who, when he steps on the pitch, gives everything he’s got. When I look back on my career that is how I look back on it and that is how I hope people have seen me.”

In total, Beckham scored 17 goals in 115 games for England between 1996 and 2009.

As is the case with most celebrities and former sports stars, there is no official figure for David Beckham’s net worth available. However, a number of media outlets have made estimates about what the former footballer’s net worth is believed to be.

David Beckham Net Worth

In 2022, The Sunday Times estimated that David and Victoria Beckham’s net worth was in the region of £380m ($464m) thanks to earnings from football, fashion and more.

Meanwhile, back in 2016, Forbes estimated that David Beckham had banked in the region of $730m (£598m) in total career earnings up until that point, placing him at number nine on the highest-paid athletes of all time list.

Life Away From The Pitch

Beckham is married to his wife Victoria, with the pair having tied the knot in 1999. The couple first met in February 1997. Beckham and his wife have four children together – Brooklyn, Romeo, Harper and Cruz.

Speaking in an interview in 2007, Victoria said of her initial impressions of Beckham: “I didn’t really know who he was. I was never into football. He was always with his mum, dad and sister while a lot of the footballers were at the bar getting drunk. I could sense right from the start that David was a gentleman, and very family-oriented, which is important because I’m the same.”

Beckham wore Adidas football boots from the start of his career, most notably the Adidas Predators. in 2003, he signed a lifetime contract with Adidas which was reportedly worth around $160m.

What Have Others Said?

Ronaldo, speaking about Beckham in October 2003: “We knew before he was a good player, but we did not expect him to be such an influential player, to show such commitment to the team spirit. The way he runs for everything, the way he tries his best. He has everyone’s respect.”

Roberto Carlos, speaking about Beckham’s free-kicks back in 2015: “Beckham takes free-kicks better than me. It is a joy to watch him take free kicks and he has proved that free kicks are not all about power.”

Soccer players who make it to the top level often enjoy worldwide recognition, but only a few of them are seen as something more than a football player. That is  the case with David Beckham.

One of the first players to become a celebrity, the British icon has drawn media attention throughout his playing career and beyond. Here, we’ll take a look at his story.

David Robert Joseph Beckham, more often known as David Beckham , is a former football player born in Leytonstone, east London, England, on May 2, 1975. He began his playing career at Manchester United, later making a sensational move to Real Madrid before embarking on a shocking adventure in the United States to play for Major League Soccer franchise Los Angeles Galaxy. The Englishman also donned the uniforms of Serie A giants AC Milan and French side Paris Saint-Germain.

Married to singer Victoria Adams, who rose to stardom as ‘Posh Spice’ of the pop group The Spice Girls, Beckham has drawn media attention not only for his work on the soccer pitch but also for his lifestyle. The renowned couple have four children together: sons Brooklyn Joseph Peltz, Romeo James, Cruz, and daughter Harper Seven. The former midfielder also became a brand himself, earning millions from endorsements and other ventures. He is co-owner of MLS side Inter Miami.

  • His real name is David Robert Joseph Beckham.
  • He was born on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, London, England.
  • He is the son of Ted Beckham and Sandra Georgina Beckham.
  • His father was an appliance repairman and his mother was a hair stylist.

Born in Leytonstone, east London, to Sandra Georgina West, a hair stylist, and David Edward Alan “Ted” Beckham, an appliance repairman, David Beckham is the middle child between two sisters. His life would immediately be attached to soccer, and curiously to the football team where he would later begin his career , as his family supported Manchester United.

Besides, Beckham was gifted with a natural talent for the game—and it didn’t take long for scouts to notice that. When he was only 11, he caught the eye of his boyhood club by winning the Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools National Skills competition. From then on, there was no turning back: Becks was destined to be a professional football player.

  • The only son of Ted Beckham and Sandra West, Beckham is the middle child between two sisters.
  • His family supported Manchester United.
  • At 11, Beckham won the Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools National Skills competition, which helped him catch the eye of Manchester United scouts. He later joined this team’s youth squad.
  • As a teenager, Beckham led the Manchester United youth squad to a national championship success in 1992.
  • Beckham made his debut with the Manchester United first team in 1995, and quickly established himself in the league and FA Cup-winning soccer team.
  • In August 1996, he scored a goal from the halfway line of the pitch, a feat that caught the eye of the whole world.

Shortly after completing his trial and leaving home to settle himself in the academy, Beckham quickly proved he was fit for the Manchester United program. After leading the youth team to a FA Youth Cup success in 1992 and a league title in 1994, Sir Alex Ferguson started to count on him for the first team. Beckham made his debut in September 1994 in a League Cup fixture against Port Vale, later scoring in his UEFA Champions League debut against Galatasaray.

Becks spent a short loan spell at Third Division team Preston North End, where he made quite an impression scoring twice in only five games, including a stunning corner kick goal. Back at the club for the 1995-96 season, Beckham had already won a spot in the starting lineup, winning his first Premier League title with his beloved club.

United would retain the trophy the following season, in which Beckham was named Young Player of the Year. What he didn’t know by then, is that more successes and international appearances with the English national team were in store for him.

  • In his third season as a pro, he was already headlining the England national team in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
  • He was a key player for Manchester United when the club won the treble in 1999.
  • In 2003, he was acquired by Real Madrid in a big deal and was one of the cornerstones of “Los Galácticos”.
  • In 2007, he signed a five-year contract with LA Galaxy worth $250 million.
  • LA Galaxy loaned him twice to AC Milan before parting ways with the club in 2013 to join Paris Saint-Germain.
  • He played in three FIFA World Cups (1998, 2002 and 2006) and in two UEFA Euros (2000 and 2004).
  • He earned 115 caps with England.
  • Beckham was the national team captain for six years, from 2000 to 2006.
  • He became the first ever English player to score in three consecutive World Cups. He scored one goal in each tournament, all of them were free-kicks.
  • He retired in 2013, at 38 years of age. He ended up with 729 appearances, 129 goals and 232 assists.

Having established himself in the Red Devils’ first team, Beckham made his way to the national team and played in his first FIFA World Cup at 23. Though he played in all qualifying games of the 1998 World Cup in France, that tournament wouldn’t end as expected for the United star. In the round of 16 against Argentina, Beckham left his team down to ten men after 47 minutes for kicking an opponent. England eventually lost on penalties, and the media was harsh on Becks for months.

However, it wouldn’t take long for him to turn the page. Beckham had a perfect season with Manchester United after that World Cup, helping the Red Devils win the treble (Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup titles). On top of that, he would leave behind that infamous episode vs. Argentina by embracing a pivotal role with England. On November 15, 2000 Beckham captained the Three Lions for the first time under interim boss Peter Taylor before Sven Goran-Eriksson made him permanent captain.

On October 6, 2001, England was trailing 2-1 to Greece after 93 minutes. The outlook was far from encouraging, as there was not much time left to avoid a World Cup playoff tie against Ukraine. That was when Beckham stood up and scored a last-gasp free-kick at Old Trafford to send England to the 2002 World Cup.

He won three more league titles with United before joining Real Madrid in a blockbuster deal , despite rumors of a Barcelona move. His stint with the Spanish giants was not as successful as expected, though, as he only won a La Liga and a Supercopa title during his time in Spain. Either way, it was still enough for him to play the 2006 World Cup, his third and last World Cup in his career. Following a quarter-final loss to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, Becks stood down as captain.

A year later, he made an unexpected move to Los Angeles Galaxy , a game-changer for MLS. After two loan spells at AC Milan, and having also trained with Tottenham early in 2011, Beckham went on to win two MLS Cups with the Galaxy. His last club was PSG , whom he joined for the second half of the 2012-13 season.

  • He has traveled the world due to philanthropic activities as UNICEF UK ambassador .
  • He has invested, collaborated or partnered with Adidas, Diageo, L’Oreal, Tudor watches and Haig.
  • He started and was model for a underwear line with the company H&M in 2012.

  • In 1997, he was named PFA Young Player of the Year.
  • In 2002, he became famous in North America thanks to the film Bend It Like Beckham .
  • In 2003, he was named the FA England Player of the Year.
  • He was distinguished with the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honors List for his services to English Football.
  • He is married to former Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham and is father to Brooklyn Beckham, Romeo Beckham, Cruz Beckham and Harper Beckham.

David Beckham - Biography

David is known for his impressive career in football and his marriage to victoria beckham.

David Beckham looks on

Born in Leytonstone on May 2, 1975, David Beckham was a Manchester United fan from a very early age. He even insisted on wearing a Red Devils shirt when training with London club Tottenham Hotspur as a schoolboy. The admiration was mutual: the biggest football club in the world had its eye on the young player and, aged 16, he signed as a trainee with Man U.

The talented teen rose from cleaning the boots of older players to making his league debut in 1995, just a month shy of his 20th birthday. But it wasn't until 1997 that he really emerged into the spotlight after falling for Spice Girl Victoria Adams. In 1998, the couple announced their engagement after ten months together.

In March the following year, the lovebirds welcomed their first child, Brooklyn, and four months later tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at Dublin's Luttrelstown Castle.

Brooklyn was joined by second son Romeo on September 1, 2002, with their third son, Cruz, making his debut in early 2005. Baby girl Harper Seven was born in July 2011.

In November 2003, David received what he described as his "best" honour – an OBE from the Queen. "It's not just for me but for Manchester United, England, all of my teammates and my family," he said. The same year it was announced the devoted Manchester United fan would be leaving his beloved club and moving to Real Madrid on a four-year contract. Another monumental decision came just after England bowed out of the 2006 World Cup in the quarter-final stage. The soccer ace announced he was to step down as captain of the squad  – a role he held for six years. "It has been an honour and a privilege to captain our country and I wish to stress that I want to continue to play for England," he declared. The success enjoyed by David on the football pitch was equalled by that of "Brand Beckham".

Marketing initiatives based on his iconic status included an aftershave as well as lucrative sponsorship deals  – with the likes of Gilette, Pepsi, Armani and Motorola. In addition, David launched his own range of men's underwear with high street store H&M. The sports hero teamed up with film director Guy Ritchie to film one of the adverts for his range.

David regularly features in the spotlight for his fashion choices and his collection of tattoos. Keen to pass on his love for football, David branched out into establishing football academies for young people in the UK and the United States. The star transferred to Los Angeles Galaxy in July 2007, hoping to increase the game's popularity Stateside.

After five and a half years, the family returned to Britain in 2013. David played for Paris St German for five months before announcing plans to retire. His last match was an emotional one. He came on to the pitch wearing specially created boots in the colours of the Union Jack, with the names of his wife and children etched on them. When he was substituted after 80 minutes, the most popular player in football was given hugs by his teammates as well as a standing ovation by fans.

David remained within the world of football after his retirement and went on to become the owner and president of the MLS team Inter Miami CF.

“Smashing. . .Beckham is a magnet for controversy” — Sports Illustrated

From the Back Cover

The Last Word on David Beckham

There is only one David Beckham -- and it's not always the one you read about in the newspapers and magazines or see in the movies. From humble East End London beginnings, the boy with prodigious soccer skills grew up to be one of the most gifted athletes of his generation as well as a sex symbol and fashion icon. Along the way he married Spice Girl Victoria "Posh" Adams, and together they inhabit a celebrity whirlwind of Diana-esque proportions. In Both Feet on the Ground , David talks candidly about the perils of fame (his wife and son were the targets of a notorious kidnapping plot and he is the subject of almost daily tabloid rumors); the struggle to balance his roles as a devoted husband and besotted father with his globetrotting existence as an international soccer star; the behind-the-scenes stories of his most memorable and heartbreaking (if only he could retake that infamous penalty kick against Portugal in Euro 2004) career moments; the controversy surrounding his first year at Real Madrid after his $41 million transfer from Manchester United, the storied English team he joined as a teenager and led for more than a decade; and, finally, his love of America, where he plans to start a soccer school and perhaps, one day, even play professionally.

Both Feet on the Ground is David Beckham's own extraordinary story, told by the man who knows him best -- David Beckham.
