I. Introduction A. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 2 diabetes is an insufficient body tissue response to insulin and impaired pancreatic production of insulin (Schub & Parks-Chapman, 2018) B. Diabetes was the 7th leading cause of death in the United States in 2017. C. In America, 26% (14 million) adults that are 65 and older have diabetes. It is estimated that 1. million Americans are diagnosed every year (American Diabetes Association, 2018). II. Content (eg. etiology, sign/symptoms, treatment) A. With type 2 diabetes is when somebody is insulin resistance. Which means the cells in the body do not respond normally to insulin (CDC, 2019). B. Diagnosing older adults with type 2 diabetes can have its challenges. C. Classic signs of polyuria and polydipsia may not be present. Other symptoms of dehydration, incontinence, confusion, nephropathy, or neuropathy may be present (Brady, 2018). D. Blood glucose levels may not be accurate due to anemia or chronic kidney disease. Or the disease may be asymptomatic in older adults (Brady, 2018). E. Treatment includes alleviating symptoms, prevent long-term complication, preserve quality of life and dignity, avoid unwanted side effects, and minimize harms and burdens of therapy (Brady, 2018). III. Content (Complications for older adult) A. Diabetes can cause urinary incontinence because of the damages in nerves of the bladder. Urinary incontinence can contribute to depression or sexual problems in older adults. (HealthinAging, 2020) B. Diabetes can cause neuropathy, which is nerve damage. This can be caused by high blood sugar over a period (Mayo Clinic, 2021). C. Diabetes can lead to heart and blood vessel diseases. Diabetes is associated with heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and atherosclerosis (Mayo Clinic, 2021). D. Diabetes increases the risk of eye diseases and issues. These could include cataracts, glaucoma, damage to vessels of retina, and blindness. The older adult would be at risk for falls with eye loss and vision problems (Mayo Clinic, 2021).
