Research Points. Research Points (RP) , or "experience", is used to research and advance in vehicles, modifications, and crew training. RP gain in the game depends on the game mode played. Squadron vehicles, coloured in green, are special vehicles that require squadron research points.

If you are researching rank II you want to use (not research just caught that lol) rank I or II, if you are researching rank IV then you want to use IV or III.
