Stunning visuals and scoring tell an amazing story in a 70% silent film set in rural Arkansas
An amazing job for a lower budget, indie film. Would be A24-esque with more resources.

ACS to screen coming-of-age drama by Conway filmmaker

“Papaw Land” is a tense yet taciturn coming-of-age drama that’s about Arkansas, made in Arkansas and written and directed by Arkansan filmmaker Justin Blake Crum . When I watched the trailer, which tells of a troubled seventeen-year-old boy sent to his grandfather’s place for a summer of rural edification, the mossy foliage and harsh sun were immediately recognizable as the Ozarks. Rarely have I seen this place captured so lovingly, with such attention to shadow and light. The landscape alone would be enough to pull me in, but there’s also something harrowing at the film’s core that the trailer does a good job of teasing without entirely revealing.
The film, which has been hopping around to different festivals since late 2021, will make its home state debut at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Ron Robinson Theater as part of the Arkansas Cinema Society ’s Arkansas Filmmaker Spotlight Series. Writer/director Justin Blake Crum, producer Jessica Crum and actor John Stiritz (who plays Papaw) will participate in a Q&A after the screening.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here .

Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/22/23 Full Review Amy O I was captivated and surprised while watching this movie. By the end, I was crying and my heart ached for growing teenagers.
Papaw Land: Directed by Justin Blake Crum. With Spring Hunter, Carson Mitchell, Heather Steadham, John Stiritz. A troubled teenager spends the summer with his grandfather in the Ozarks, where he's free from his mother, but not her painful past.
Crum started writing "Papaw Land" around 2007, culling from his own experiences in rural Virginia. "I was living in Los Angeles and I really missed my small-town life," he says.
8/10. Raw, Relatable and Real. solussagei 24 June 2023. The movie is well produced and thought of for his first film. Unlike most films today, the pacing of the story is done both by the actors and the atmosphere. Completely pulls you into a sense of seeing things from Matthew's perspective. Stepping away from the coming of age movies that we ...
