Starting a thesis can be daunting. There are so many questions in the beginning:

  • How do you actually start your thesis?
  • How do you structure it?
  • What information should the individual chapters contain?

Each educational program has different demands on your thesis structure, which is why asking directly for the requirements of your program should be a first step. However, there is not much flexibility when it comes to structuring your thesis.

Abstract : a brief overview of your entire thesis.

Literature review : an evaluation of previous research on your topic that includes a discussion of gaps in the research and how your work may fill them.

Methods : outlines the methodology that you are using in your research.

Thesis : a large paper, or multi-chapter work, based on a topic relating to your field of study.

The abstract is the overview of your thesis and generally very short. This section should highlight the main contents of your thesis “at a glance” so that someone who is curious about your work can get the gist quickly. Take a look at our guide on how to write an abstract for more info.

Tip: Consider writing your abstract last, after you’ve written everything else.

The introduction to your thesis gives an overview of its basics or main points. It should answer the following questions:

  • Why is the topic being studied?
  • How is the topic being studied?
  • What is being studied?

In answering the first question, you should know what your personal interest in this topic is and why it is relevant. Why does it matter?

To answer the "how", you should briefly explain how you are going to reach your research goal. Some prefer to answer that question in the methods chapter, but you can give a quick overview here.

And finally, you should explain "what" you are studying. You can also give background information here.

You should rewrite the introduction one last time when the writing is done to make sure it connects with your conclusion. Learn more about how to write a good thesis introduction in our thesis introduction guide .

A literature review is often part of the introduction, but it can be a separate section. It is an evaluation of previous research on the topic showing that there are gaps that your research will attempt to fill. A few tips for your literature review:

  • Use a wide array of sources
  • Show both sides of the coin
  • Make sure to cover the classics in your field
  • Present everything in a clear and structured manner

The methodology chapter outlines which methods you choose to gather data, how the data is analyzed and justifies why you chose that methodology . It shows how your choice of design and research methods is suited to answering your research question.

Make sure to also explain what the pitfalls of your approach are and how you have tried to mitigate them. Discussing where your study might come up short can give you more credibility, since it shows the reader that you are aware of its limitations.

Tip: Use graphs and tables, where appropriate, to visualize your results.

The results chapter outlines what you found out in relation to your research questions or hypotheses. It generally contains the facts of your research and does not include a lot of analysis, because that happens mostly in the discussion chapter.

Clearly visualize your results, using tables and graphs, especially when summarizing, and be consistent in your way of reporting. This means sticking to one format to help the reader evaluate and compare the data.

The discussion chapter includes your own analysis and interpretation of the data you gathered , comments on your results and explains what they mean. This is your opportunity to show that you have understood your findings and their significance.

Point out the limitations of your study, provide explanations for unexpected results, and note any questions that remain unanswered.

This is probably your most important chapter. This is where you highlight that your research objectives have been achieved. You can also reiterate any limitations to your study and make suggestions for future research.

Remember to check if you have really answered all your research questions and hypotheses in this chapter. Your thesis should be tied up nicely in the conclusion and show clearly what you did, what results you got, and what you learned. At the end of your thesis, you’ll have to compile a list of references for everything you’ve cited above. Ideally, you should keep track of everything from the beginning. Otherwise, this could be a mammoth and pretty laborious task to do.

It's recommended to start a thesis by writing the literature review first. This way you learn more about the sources, before jumping to the discussion or any other element.

It's recommended to write the abstract of a thesis last, once everything else is done. This way you will be able to provide a complete overview of your work.

Usually, the discussion is the longest part of a thesis. In this part you are supposed to point out the limitations of your study, provide explanations for unexpected results, and note any questions that remain unanswered.

What is a thesis?

What is a dissertation, getting started, staying on track, thesis abstract, lit(erature) review.

A thesis is a long-term project that you work on over the course of a semester or a year. Theses have a very wide variety of styles and content, so we encourage you to look at prior examples and work closely with faculty to develop yours. 

Before you begin, make sure that you are familiar with the dissertation genre—what it is for and what it looks like.

Generally speaking, a dissertation’s purpose is to prove that you have the expertise necessary to fulfill your doctoral-degree requirements by showing depth of knowledge and independent thinking.

The form of a dissertation may vary by discipline. Be sure to follow the specific guidelines of your department.

Finding an original topic can be a daunting and overwhelming task. These key concepts can help you focus and save time.

Finding a topic for your thesis or dissertation should start with a research question that excites or at least interests you. A rigorous, engaging, and original project will require continuous curiosity about your topic, about your own thoughts on the topic, and about what other scholars have said on your topic. Avoid getting boxed in by thinking you know what you want to say from the beginning; let your research and your writing evolve as you explore and fine-tune your focus through constant questioning and exploration.

Get a sense of the broader picture before you narrow your focus and attempt to frame an argument. Read, skim, and otherwise familiarize yourself with what other scholars have done in areas related to your proposed topic. Briefly explore topics tangentially related to yours to broaden your perspective and increase your chance of finding a unique angle to pursue.

Critical Reading

Critical reading is the opposite of passive reading. Instead of merely reading for information to absorb, critical reading also involves careful, sustained thinking about what you are reading. This process may include analyzing the author’s motives and assumptions, asking what might be left out of the discussion, considering what you agree with or disagree with in the author’s statements and why you agree or disagree, and exploring connections or contradictions between scholarly arguments. Conversation

Your thesis or dissertation will incorporate some ideas from other scholars whose work you researched. By reading critically and following your curiosity, you will develop your own ideas and claims, and these contributions are the core of your project. You will also acknowledge the work of scholars who came before you, and you must accurately and fairly attribute this work and define your place within the larger discussion. Make sure that you know how to quote, summarize, paraphrase ,  integrate , and cite sources to avoid plagiarism and to show the depth and breadth of your knowledge.

A thesis is a long-term, large project that involves both research and writing; it is easy to lose focus, motivation, and momentum. Here are suggestions for achieving the result you want in the time you have.

The dissertation is probably the largest project you have undertaken, and a lot of the work is self-directed. The project can feel daunting or even overwhelming unless you break it down into manageable pieces and create a timeline for completing each smaller task. Be realistic but also challenge yourself, and be forgiving of yourself if you miss a self-imposed deadline here and there.

Your program will also have specific deadlines for different requirements, including establishing a committee, submitting a prospectus, completing the dissertation, defending the dissertation, and submitting your work. Consult your department’s website for these dates and incorporate them into the timeline for your work.

Accountability

Sometimes self-imposed deadlines do not feel urgent unless there is accountability to someone beyond yourself. To increase your motivation to complete tasks on schedule, set dates with your committee chair to submit pre-determined pieces of a chapter. You can also arrange with a fellow doctoral student to check on each other’s progress. Research and writing can be lonely, so it is also nice to share that journey with someone and support each other through the process.

Common Pitfalls

The most common challenges for students writing a dissertation are writer’s block, information-overload, and the compulsion to keep researching forever.

There are many strategies for avoiding writer’s block, such as freewriting, outlining, taking a walk, starting in the middle, and creating an ideal work environment for your particular learning style. Pay attention to what helps you and try different things until you find what works.

Finally, remember that there is always more to learn and your dissertation cannot incorporate everything. Follow your curiosity but also set limits on the scope of your work. It helps to create a folder entitled “future projects” for topics and sources that interest you but that do not fit neatly into the dissertation. Also remember that future scholars will build off of your work, so leave something for them to do.

An abstract is a short (approximately 200-word) summary or overview of your research project. It provides enough information for a reader to know what they will find within the larger document, such as your purpose, methodology, and results or conclusion. It may also include a list of  keywords. An abstract is an original document, not an excerpt, and its contents and organization may vary by discipline.

A literature review establishes a set of themes and contexts drawn from foundational research and materials that relate to your project. It is an acknowledgment that your scholarship doesn’t exist in a vacuum. With the review, you identify patterns and trends in the literature to situate your contribution within the existing scholarly conversation.

What is a literature review? A literature review (or lit review, for short) is a critical analysis of published scholarly research (the "literature") related to a specific topic. Literature here means body of work, which traditionally was done in written form and may include journal articles, books, book chapters, dissertations and thesis, or conference proceedings. In the case of design, however, literature has an expanded breadth since the body of work is oftentimes not represented by words. A design review may include plans, sections, photographs, and any type of media that portrays the work.

A literature review may stand on its own or may be inside a larger work, usually in the introductory sections. It is thorough but not exhaustive--there will always be more information than you can reasonably locate and include. Be mindful of your scope and time constraints and select your reviewed materials with care. A literature review

  • summarizes the themes and findings of works in an area
  • compares and contrasts relevant aspects of literature on a topic
  • critically assesses the strengths and omissions of the source material
  • elaborates on the implications of their findings for one's own research topic

What does a literature review look like? Each discipline has its own style for writing a literature review; urban planning and design lit reviews may look different than those from architecture, and design lit reviews will look significantly different than reviews from the biological sciences or engineering. Look at published journal articles within your field and note how they present the information.

  • Introduction: most scholarly articles and books will have a literature review within the introductory sections. Its precise location may vary, but it is most often in the first few paragraphs or pages.

Dedicated literature reviews: these are stand-alone resources unto themselves. You can search for "literature review" and a topic, and you may find that one already exists. These literature reviews are useful as models within your field, for finding additional sources to explore, and for beginning to map the general relationships within the scholarly conversation around your topic. Be mindful not to plagiarize the source material.

Browsing through theses and dissertations of the past can help to get a sense of your options and gain inspiration but be careful to use current guidelines and refer to your committee instead of relying on these examples for form or formatting.

Master Thesis/Project Report Format

Guidelines for preparation of master thesis/project report, overview of the steps.

  • Select master project/thesis advisor.
  • Select a project topic.
  • Select a committee.
  • Obtain approvals for committee, advisor.
  • Register for the master project/thesis course with thesis advisor. (A section number will be provided to you by your project/thesis advisor.)
  • Start Research on your master project.
  • (Optional)  Present a thesis proposal to the committee during mid-way of the thesis.
  • Write project report/thesis.
  • Present your master project and/or defend thesis.
  • Submit your master project report, or publish thesis.

Project/Thesis Option

Discuss with your master project advisor at the beginning to decide whether your master project will be more suited for the project or thesis option.

Questions to ask when evaluating your master project topic:

  • Is there current interest in this topic in the field?
  • Is there is a gap in knowledge that work on this topic could help to fill?
  • Is it possible to focus on a manageable segment of this topic?
  • Identify a preliminary method of data collection that is acceptable to your advisor.
  • Is there a body of literature is available that is relevant to your topic?
  • Do you need financial assistance to carry out your research?
  • Is the data necessary to complete your work is easily accessible?
  • Define the project purpose, scope, objectives, and procedures.
  • What are the potential limitations of the study?
  • Are there any skills called on by the study that you have yet to acquire?

Master level project involves:

  • Analyzing the problem or topic.
  • Conducting extensive research.
  • Summarizing findings from the research investigation.
  • Recommending additional research on the topic.
  • Drawing conclusions and making recommendations.
  • Documenting the results of the research.
  • Defending conclusions and recommendations.

Pre-Thesis Planning

When you’re contemplating a thesis topic, you should discuss your interests with as many people as possible to gain a broad perspective. You will find your faculty advisor knowledgeable and willing to offer excellent suggestions and advice regarding an appropriate thesis topic.

Give considerable thought to the identification and planning of a thesis topic. Review literature related to your interests; read a variety of research papers, abstracts, and proposals for content, methods and structure. Looking at completed master’s theses will be a useful activity toward expanding inquiry skills and thought processes.

After the thesis advisor is selected, you may register on-line for a thesis section. You will need to see your thesis instructor to obtain the thesis section number.

Funding is usually available to students with expertise to the specific area. You will want to research scholarship options during the pre-project planning as many scholarship applications are due months before the award is granted.

Thesis Quality

The Technology Division at the Cullen College of Engineering has significant expectations with regard to thesis quality. Poor or average level theses will not receive college approvals. It is the joint responsibility of the student and the committee to ensure that the thesis is of acceptable quality. Ultimately, the task is one borne by the student as the thesis is a reflection of the quality of their work. The thesis committee can direct the student to seek assistance if quality issues are noticed as the chapters are developed. The student should take quality feedback seriously and not wait until the end to attempt to fix this type of problem as it can result in significant delays and postponement of graduation. When you write and defend your thesis, keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Shows a cursory examination of the topic.
  • Makes little use of existing data sources.
  • Fails to examine primary sources.
  • Shows little comprehension of crucial texts or research in the subject matter.
  • Lacks adequate organization.
  • Treats the topic in a competent, straightforward way.
  • Shows a good grasp of the material.
  • Makes use of existing data sources in a competent fashion or shows a good acquaintance with primary sources and current research.
  • Shows a solid comprehension of research in the subject matter
  • Sustains a line of argumentation throughout the thesis
  • Shows all of the above qualities of a quality thesis as well as some measure of originality in research. Originality is defined as developing new data; treating existing data in an original or particularly compelling way; developing new or particularly compelling theoretical arguments; interpreting existing research in an original or particularly compelling way; or bringing primary or secondary materials and research together to sustain a new, comprehensive or compelling interpretation. In general, a thigh quality thesis either shows some measure of originality in its argument or empirical base; or is in some other way striking or new.

Organization of Thesis

The original and copies of the thesis MUST include the following items  IN THE ORDER LISTED :

  • Blank sheet of bond paper at the beginning of each copy submitted.
  • Copyright page (optional).
  • Title Page (must show month and year of graduation - see example).
  • Signature page (see example). All three required copies must have ORIGINAL SIGNATURES of the committee and the student. Signatures must be in black ink. This page should be omitted from the electronic thesis.
  • Acknowledgment (optional).
  • Abstract Title Page (optional - must show month and year of graduation - see example).
  • Abstract (optional - University Microfilms, Inc. requires abstracts be no longer than 150 words.).
  • Table of Contents.
  • References.

Style Requirements

Although there is no prescribed style for the completed thesis, there are several style manuals available which may prove helpful. The student should contact the thesis advisor to discuss the style manual to be used.  Above all, it is important to be consistent throughout the entire thesis.  Decide how you wish to structure your manuscript and be consistent throughout it.

Steps in the Submission of Electronic Dissertation/Thesis

  • Write your thesis per Technology Division at the Cullen College of Engineering thesis guidelines.
  • Successfully defend your thesis. Make corrections per the thesis committee.
  • Committee signs the approval page.
  • Submit a copy of the final thesis version to the Associate Dean for Research for Graduate Studies or your graduate advisor for formatting review a minimum of two weeks prior to the end of the semester.
  • Wait for formatting approval before beginning electronic submission process.

Electronic Submission

  • Create a single pdf file of the thesis. The signature page is NOT included in the online submission.
  • Submit the signed approval page to your graduate advisor. Approval page is stored in the student’s file. ET students must also submit rubric sheets, one for each committee member.
  • Please note you will be asked if you would like to embargo your work, request a journal hold or a patent hold. Be sure to check with your committee chair about these features and whether your committee chair will approve them.
  • Uploading the thesis requires an active Cougarnet account and log in. If you have not used your Cougarnet account in more than 90 days, please contact the ETD administrator for assistance.
  • You will receive an e-mail confirming your upload to TDL. Please forward this email to your graduate advisor.
  • Wait for confirmation from your faculty chair and graduate advisor that your document has been accepted.
  • Email your committee chair requesting approval of your submission. Also request approval of the embargo, if applicable.

Electronic Copy Submission

Senior Thesis Guide

What is a thesis.

The most frequently asked questions concern what is actually in a Thesis (how much detail, how long should it be, etc.). This section of the guide is a strictly informal set of guidelines that a student may use to orient him/herself as to the basic components of a thesis. Since projects differ widely, it is impossible to develop a general outline that applies equally to all students. Regardless of how well you think your own research fits the following guidelines, you should talk to your advisor to determine the most appropriate style of presentation for your own work.

The essence of any scholarly work, which a thesis is supposed to be, is to establish the following:

  • Definition of the problem and review of the literature
  • Presentation of your particular contribution to this area
  • Identification of fruitful areas of further research that others in the field may use to guide their own work

Toward these three goals, the following list of questions may prove useful for organizing both your research effort and the final writing of the thesis.

What are you looking at?

You must begin by defining your problem. In the introduction of the thesis, however, you want to do this in a general way that gives the reader a sense of the scope of the project and a basic understanding of your problem area. For example, you may be solving a problem of interest to a particular company, or developing a new approach to a problem that may be of interest to the research community as well.

Why are you looking at it?

Motivate your work – both within the research community, and more broadly. Explain to the reader why you will not simply waste his/her time on an uninteresting problem if he/she reads your thesis. Establish who will benefit from your work and why.

Who else looked at it?

With a rough idea of what your problem is, you must firmly now establish the state of the art in the area. This is particularly critical if you wish to claim that you have a better way of solving/approaching a problem than has appeared previously in the literature. If you are duplicating the approach of others, but using a different data set that is of particular interest to you, it is important say so and describe why you have chosen this particular approach/data.

How are you looking at it?

At this point, you may need to review your problem again but at a much higher level of detail, introducing any mathematical notation required and describing any subtle aspects of your problem. Empirical research, which involves gathering data to prove some relationship, can often be introduced by citing one or more hypotheses which you feel your research will prove (or disprove).

After stating the relevant hypotheses, your work should describe the process of collecting and analyzing data to confirm or deny your hypotheses. The most interesting hypotheses are ones that run counter to prevailing public opinion, although these can be very difficult to prove.

Not all work is conducive to initial statements of hypotheses, particularly methodological theses which are aimed at better solutions to existing problems (the implicit hypothesis is that your method is better than others, but this need not be stated as such). In any event, unless your work is purely theoretical, you should describe in detail your experimental design: how you structured your data collection, problems you encountered, and how you conducted your experiments.

In any case, the description of your work should be sufficiently detailed to allow another researcher to duplicate your efforts. A key part of your description should be a clear list of major assumptions you are making and why you are making them. It is useful at the same time to indicate which assumptions are perfectly reasonable (e.g. other researchers have used the same assumption and have obtained good results) and which are likely to affect your results but are required for time/budget reasons.

What are the limitations of your work?

One of the most difficult aspects of research is understanding exactly what you did and what you did not do. If you were limited by your data, explain how you think this might affect the generality of your conclusions. Discuss openly any shortcuts required due to time/budget/data availability constraints. Be humble!! Do not try to claim credit by stating that you feel that your method/model will work in more general situations if you have done only limited testing. At the same time, do not feel you are getting off the hook by over-qualifying your work. Clearly drawing the line between what you did and did not do is a central step in the scientific method since it helps define the state of the art.

What are your conclusions?

In view of the limitations above, what conclusions can you draw from your research? Because your conclusions are often inextricably intertwined with the limitations of your research, both questions are often answered simultaneously. It may be useful to discuss limitations of specific aspects of your work while you are describing the results, but generally you should defer a discussion of how such limitations until later. Your section on conclusions should specifically and clearly describe your contributions to the field and the relevant limitations. Again, do not underrate your work, but do not claim to have solved problems that are not firmly substantiated in the body of the thesis.

Finally, you should identify areas for future research. Now that you are an expert in your particular area, you should have both a narrow understanding of a well-defined problem as well as a broader understanding of the field as a whole. As such an authority, you can guide others in directions that you feel will provide the greatest good. Such recommendations are usually based on an evaluation of the major weaknesses in your own work, in which case you might recommend how others (preferably with more time and funding than you enjoyed) could overcome these weaknesses. Be sure, however, to specify those weaknesses that you feel would have the greatest impact on your conclusions. Some assumptions that you may have made may be perfectly reasonable!

Logistics and Administrative Requirements

The Senior Thesis process is a full year, 12-month effort, which really begins during the end of students’ junior spring semester. In both the Fall and the Spring semester, you should be prepared to devote about the same amount of time that would be needed to attend and satisfy all of the requirements of a normal advanced course. Administratively you are required to register for ORF 498 in the Fall, and ORF 499 in the Spring of your senior year. Keep in mind that in order to be a full-time B.S.E student, you need to enroll in at least four courses each term.

The Senior Thesis Classes (ORF 498/499) are intended to help structure your research time and gauge your progress so as to avoid the dreaded Thesis rush at the end of the year. We also aim to provide you with greater and more continual feedback on your work, while introducing you to different tools you might need during your Thesis. Key dates and deadlines and certain rules and procedures governing the preparation of the final document are also contained herein.

Students who don’t wish to continue with their Thesis can switch to ORF 497 (One Semester Project) by September 13, 2024 (the end of the Add/Drop period), and will be required to take eleven departmental electives instead of the ten required when doing a Senior Thesis.

Senior Thesis Funds

Limited funding is provided by the School of Engineering and Applied Science for theses which require financial support for special travel needs, acquisition of data, or other special requirements. Awards are typically around $250-500, but not all proposals can be funded. Talk with your advisor if you feel you may qualify for this support. Thesis funding is announced in both the fall and spring semesters, and students should plan on creating a detailed proposal if interested.

Mudd Library Thesis Archive

Mudd Library’s Senior Thesis Archive enables Princeton students to access submitted copies of senior theses online. When using the database, students may select the department to view theses from previous ORFE classes.

Organizing Your Time

Every thesis looks very different, and as a result it is difficult to provide a single, universal timeline for students’ progress. However, time management and organization are extremely important skills to develop during your work.

It may be helpful to divide the effort into some primary tasks:

  • Defining the problem and reviewing the literature
  • Dividing the problem into smaller tasks (e.g. data collection, data cleaning, etc.)
  • Doing the work (including experimental work, if applicable)
  • Writing the thesis

Both ORF 498 and ORF 499 will aim to support your organization and time management through precept-like ‘Research Groups’, where you and your peers will share progress, ideas, and challenges.

Please do not underestimate how long it takes to write the thesis. Be sure to plan ahead!

Senior Thesis Prospectus

In preparation for doing two semesters of focused research during your senior year you are required to prepare an initial report that serves as a prospectus or guide for your Senior Thesis research. This Senior Thesis Prospectus is due on Friday, September 20, 2024. It serves the purpose of ensuring that you have a clear vision of the work that lies ahead for you and your faculty advisor. You have had the summer to start thinking about your Senior Thesis research, and you should aim to return to campus organized and prepared to begin conducting your research. The Senior Thesis Prospectus should be a short document consisting of two paragraphs: i) the primary context / motivation for your work, and ii) the set of research questions you aim to focus on.

Later in the semester you will be defining the preliminary scope of your proposed thesis project by working out an outline. What major chapters or sections do you envision your thesis having? When might you expect completion of these parts? This is an opportunity for you to organize your time around smaller and more manageable ‘parts’.

ORF 498 Midterm Report

The Fall Progress Report is due the week after Fall Recess (Friday, October 25, 2024). It is designed to serve as an initial checkpoint on your progress and provides an early opportunity for feedback. It should be a substantial update and expansion of the Senior Thesis Prospectus with expanded references, detailed description of data sources, if appropriate, and include an initial draft of at least some sections. You can think of this as being a “1st draft” of your thesis – albeit very much a work in progress.

It will be graded by your advisor and hence you should discuss with them what is expected. In general, however, the Fall report is expected to be 5 to 10 substantive pages in length and neatly presented. The basic outline of the report might be as follows:

  • Introduction : What is the motivation for your research question? Why is this worth studying? What approach do you (plan to) take? Do you show that the topic is novel? Are the implications of your work clearly stated?
  • Literature Review : What existing academic works are most relevant to your work? What are the major take- aways from these papers? How will your project differ? How will your project be similar? What tools or methodologies are most common (or important) in this area?
  • Data Sources : If your Thesis uses data (>90% of them do), what data do you use? Where was it acquired? What kind of cleaning or pre-processing has been done? What kind of validation (if any) have you performed to ensure its quality? If you use several different datasets, how have you merged them? Is sufficient detail provided to replicate your work?
  • Analysis & Results : If you have been able to make some progress on these areas, you should aim to fill them out. What did you do? Why? What assumptions did you make in doing so? Are your procedures logically presented and organized? What did you learn from your analysis? How do we interpret these results? What other questions come up through what you obtained? Are all figures or tables mentioned and discussed in the text?
  • Future Plan : This Section will not appear in your final Thesis, but it is worth thinking about as you progress. What parts of your research will you be focusing on next? What do you hope to accomplish in a few weeks? A few months?

After submitting your reports, you will give a short presentation to your classmates on your progress. You are encouraged to think about this as being the first part of what you will present at the Symposium in the spring. Presentations should aim to be 3-5 minutes long, and cover all main parts of the midterm report.

ORF 498 Final Fall Report

The ORF 498 Final Fall Report is due on Dean’s Date (Friday, December 13, 2024). It is a summary of your progress to date. In general, 30-40 typed pages are expected for this report.

The progress report will be graded by your advisor, and hence you should talk to them regarding the stage of your project and content of your report. You should aim for this to constitute about one third of your final Thesis – although students’ projects will vary. Your outline for this report will likely be extremely similar to the ORF 498 Midterm Report, although more detail is expected on every front.

By the end of the fall, you should aim to have some results to present, discuss, and interpret in light of your original research question. In this report (and those that follow), we will be looking at the product of your research process – not just the process itself.

ORF 499 Spring Report

In the spring course ORF 499 (Senior Thesis), students will be asked to submit another substantial progress report, which will be due on Friday, February 28, 2025. You should aim to show additional progress from the ORF 498 Final Fall Report, and this document should aim to constitute two thirds of your Thesis.

ORF 499 Submitting the Final Thesis

Final theses are due by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2025, in the following two formats.

  • One electronic copy submitted through the ORFE Independent Work Progress System (OIWPS) .
  • One electronic copy submitted through Mudd Library.

All students are invited to come to the Sherrerd Hall Atrium on April 10, 2025, at 4:00p.m. for ORFE’s Thesis turn-in celebration.

The Thesis Symposium

Capping the thesis effort is a day of oral presentations during which seniors share their work with faculty and peers. This symposium will be held during Reading Period, on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, from 9:00am to 12:00 p.m., and will be followed by a lunch.

You will have 12 minutes to describe your work, and then 3 minutes for Q&A by the audience. As it is very easy to run over this time limit, it is a good idea to practice your presentation beforehand. You are also encouraged to focus on high-level context and results of your work, since there isn’t enough time to get into all the details.

Both ORF 498 and 499 are graded A-F courses. However, the work you do during your Thesis is fundamentally different from your usual classwork. Instead of evaluating only the outcome of your work (i.e., your final Thesis), we are also aiming to evaluate the process behind your work. Did you demonstrate the ability to think and learn independently? To apply knowledge from other classes to solve a practical problem? Were you consistently engaged with your project? All assignments / reports / presentations in ORF 498 / 499 are intended to measure these aspects of your research process – along with the results of your investigation.

In ORF 498, your grade is broken down into the following categories:

  • Participation: 20%
  • Homework (including Prospectus): 10%
  • Midterm Report & Presentation: 20% (= 15% + 5%)
  • Final Fall Report: 50%

Note that your grade for the Midterm and Final Reports will be determined by your advisor.

ORF 499 will have similar guidelines, but more heavily weighted towards the final Thesis:

  • Participation: 10%
  • Writing Assignments (including Spring Report): 10%
  • Final Thesis: 70%
  • Final Presentation: 10%

Similar to ORF 498, the final Thesis will be graded by your advisor.

The participation component of the grade in both courses is primarily based on your attendance and engagement with your ‘Research Groups’ – precept-like sessions led by a graduate AI.

Grading Guidelines for Reports

You will most frequently be submitting (for grade) written reports that constitute a piece of your thesis. In an effort to make the evaluation of these reports as uniform as possible, we have decided to grade them along several different categories – 6 are expected of all theses, and 4 depend on the specifics of each students’ project.

Your reports will be evaluated in each of these categories (excluding those not relevant to your specific project) on a scale of 0-3.

We expect that every thesis contains the following:

Writing QualityWriting is clear, concise, and well-polished. The material is organized and tells a coherent story. All concepts and notation used are defined when needed.
CreativityThe thesis demonstrates the student’s ability to work independently on novel topics. It shows originality and creativity in the problem formulation, methodology, and/or other parts of the work.
Broader ContextThe thesis is related to global, economic, social, or environmental issues. Any relevant contemporary issues are identified and tied to the thesis’ motivation and results.
Literature ReviewThe student has demonstrated the ability to find, read, consolidate, and interpret scientific literature. Any gaps or unresolved questions are identified and used to motivate the project. The information in the thesis is scholarly, accurate, from relevant sources, and appropriately cited.
ResultsThe results and their implications are clearly and objectively stated. Any takeaways are interpreted through the lens of relevant prior literature, or broader societal context.
DepthThe student has demonstrated a collective, thoughtful, and exhaustive thought process in their approach to the problem. Several extensions to the students’ original problem have been presented and studied. Overall, the thesis left “no major stone
unturned”.

Formatting Guidelines

There are certain guidelines that must be followed when preparing your theses. These guidelines have been developed as a response to certain legal requirements regarding copyrights as well as administrative needs for processing the thesis.

The requirements for preparing the thesis are as follows:

The front page of the thesis should include title, author, advisor(s), date (April 2024), advisor(s), and the statement: SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF OPERATIONS RESEARCH AND FINANCIAL ENGINEERING PRINCETON UNIVERSITY APRIL 2025

The second page should contain the following statements: I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. I authorize Princeton University to lend this thesis to other institutions or individuals for the purpose of scholarly research. Students are not required to have the thesis printed and hard bound. In the event that advisors request to receive copies of their students’ bound theses, students should adhere to the following formatting guidelines:

  • Must include title page.
  • The thesis may be typed one and one half spaced or double spaced, with the exception of footnotes and bibliography.
  • The font size should be between 10 and 12 point (10 point recommended).
  • The left-hand margin should be 1½ inches to allow for binding; all other margins should be approximately 1 inch.
  • All material in the thesis (tables, figures and exhibits) must be photo reproducible. Photographs may be included, but should be clear, glossy, and high contrast.
  • If students bind theses for their own personal use: each thesis contains the title and author on the front cover, gold-stamped or engraved by the binder.

Be sure to include a hook at the beginning of the introduction. This is a statement of something sufficiently interesting to motivate your reader to read the rest of the paper, it is an important/interesting scientific problem that your paper either solves or addresses. You should draw the reader in and make them want to read the rest of the paper.

What else belongs in the introductory section(s) of your paper?  Remember that this is not a review paper. We are looking for original work and interpretation/analysis by you. Break up the introduction section into logical segments by using subheads. 
Methods What belongs in the "methods" section of a scientific paper? The methods section should answering the following questions and caveats:  Citations in this section should be limited to data sources and references of where to find more complete descriptions of procedures.
Do not include descriptions of results.

How do you do this?  Why? 
Discussion Start with a few sentences that summarize the most important results. The discussion section should be a brief essay in itself, answering the following questions and caveats:  This section should be rich in references to similar work and background needed to interpret results. However, interpretation/discussion section(s) are often too long and verbose. Is there material that does not contribute to one of the elements listed above? If so, this may be material that you will want to consider deleting or moving. Break up the section into logical segments by using subheads.

Order of Writing Your thesis is not written in the same order as it is presented in. The following gives you one idea how to proceed.  Here is another approach.

Tying the Text to the Data  "Show them, don't just tell them…" Ideally, every result claimed in the text should be documented with data, usually data presented in tables or figures. If there are no data provided to support a given statement of result or observation, consider adding more data, or deleting the unsupported "observation."

Avoiding ambiguity
Thesis length Write for brevity rather than length. The goal is the shortest possible paper that contains all information necessary to describe the work and support the interpretation. 
Avoid unnecessary repetition and irrelevant tangents. 
Necessary repetition: the main theme should be developed in the introduction as a motivation or working hypothesis. It is then developed in the main body of the paper, and mentioned again in the discussion section (and, of course, in the abstract and conclusions). 
Some suggestions on how to shorten your paper:  Although it varies considerably from project to project, average thesis length is about 40 pages of text plus figures. This total page count includes all your text as well as the list of references, but it does not include any appendices. These generalizations should not be taken too seriously, especially if you are working on a labor-intensive lab project. If you have any questions about whether your project is of sufficient scope, consult one of us early on.

Structure of a research proposal

A research proposal describes what you will investigate, why it’s important, and how you will conduct your research.

The format of a research proposal varies between fields, but most proposals will contain at least these elements:

While the sections may vary, the overall objective is always the same. A research proposal serves as a blueprint and guide for your research plan, helping you get organized and feel confident in the path forward you choose to take.

Academics often have to write research proposals to get funding for their projects. As a student, you might have to write a research proposal as part of a grad school application , or prior to starting your thesis or dissertation .

In addition to helping you figure out what your research can look like, a proposal can also serve to demonstrate why your project is worth pursuing to a funder, educational institution, or supervisor.

Research proposal length

The length of a research proposal can vary quite a bit. A bachelor’s or master’s thesis proposal can be just a few pages, while proposals for PhD dissertations or research funding are usually much longer and more detailed. Your supervisor can help you determine the best length for your work.

One trick to get started is to think of your proposal’s structure as a shorter version of your thesis or dissertation , only without the results , conclusion and discussion sections.

Like your dissertation or thesis, the proposal will usually have a title page that includes:

  • The proposed title of your project
  • Your supervisor’s name
  • Your institution and department

The first part of your proposal is the initial pitch for your project. Make sure it succinctly explains what you want to do and why.

Your introduction should:

  • Introduce your topic
  • Give necessary background and context
  • Outline your  problem statement  and research questions

To guide your introduction , include information about:

  • Who could have an interest in the topic (e.g., scientists, policymakers)
  • How much is already known about the topic
  • What is missing from this current knowledge
  • What new insights your research will contribute
  • Why you believe this research is worth doing

As you get started, it’s important to demonstrate that you’re familiar with the most important research on your topic. A strong literature review  shows your reader that your project has a solid foundation in existing knowledge or theory. It also shows that you’re not simply repeating what other people have already done or said, but rather using existing research as a jumping-off point for your own.

In this section, share exactly how your project will contribute to ongoing conversations in the field by:

  • Comparing and contrasting the main theories, methods, and debates
  • Examining the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • Explaining how will you build on, challenge, or synthesize prior scholarship

Following the literature review, restate your main  objectives . This brings the focus back to your own project. Next, your research design or methodology section will describe your overall approach, and the practical steps you will take to answer your research questions.

To finish your proposal on a strong note, explore the potential implications of your research for your field. Emphasize again what you aim to contribute and why it matters.

For example, your results might have implications for:

  • Improving best practices
  • Informing policymaking decisions
  • Strengthening a theory or model
  • Challenging popular or scientific beliefs
  • Creating a basis for future research

Some institutions or funders require a detailed timeline of the project, asking you to forecast what you will do at each stage and how long it may take. While not always required, be sure to check the requirements of your project.

If you are applying for research funding, chances are you will have to include a detailed budget. This shows your estimates of how much each part of your project will cost.

Make sure to check what type of costs the funding body will agree to cover. For each item, include:

  • Cost : exactly how much money do you need?
  • Justification : why is this cost necessary to complete the research?
  • Source : how did you calculate the amount?

To determine your budget, think about:

  • Travel costs : do you need to go somewhere to collect your data? How will you get there, and how much time will you need? What will you do there (e.g., interviews, archival research)?
  • Materials : do you need access to any tools or technologies?
  • Help : do you need to hire any research assistants for the project? What will they do, and how much will you pay them?

A research aim is a broad statement indicating the general purpose of your research project. It should appear in your introduction at the end of your problem statement , before your research objectives.

Research objectives are more specific than your research aim. They indicate the specific ways you’ll address the overarching aim.

A PhD, which is short for philosophiae doctor (doctor of philosophy in Latin), is the highest university degree that can be obtained. In a PhD, students spend 3–5 years writing a dissertation , which aims to make a significant, original contribution to current knowledge.

A PhD is intended to prepare students for a career as a researcher, whether that be in academia, the public sector, or the private sector.

A master’s is a 1- or 2-year graduate degree that can prepare you for a variety of careers.

All master’s involve graduate-level coursework. Some are research-intensive and intend to prepare students for further study in a PhD; these usually require their students to write a master’s thesis . Others focus on professional training for a specific career.

Critical thinking refers to the ability to evaluate information and to be aware of biases or assumptions, including your own.

Like information literacy , it involves evaluating arguments, identifying and solving problems in an objective and systematic way, and clearly communicating your ideas.

The best way to remember the difference between a research plan and a research proposal is that they have fundamentally different audiences. A research plan helps you, the researcher, organize your thoughts. On the other hand, a dissertation proposal or research proposal aims to convince others (e.g., a supervisor, a funding body, or a dissertation committee) that your research topic is relevant and worthy of being conducted.
