Introduction:
Long before the invention of logarithms, engineers were forced to solve equations the long and hard way without the luxury of being able to quickly simplify. The invention of logarithms made the process much easier as well as reducing the chance of errors that could be made when solving. In this essay, I will be exploring the use of tools before and after the invention of logarithms, differentiating the use of logarithms today versus many years ago, and how tools are used to solve logarithms. Logarithms play a key role in math and the real-world as they are applicable to real-life instances, hence the importance of learning and studying them.
Body Paragraphs:
In the year 1614 John Napier, a Scottish mathematician, published his discovery of logarithms. The purpose of this publication was to assist in the multiplication of sines. Logarithms reduced the time needed for duplicating numbers with very long digits. They were fundamental in mathematical work for over 300 years, until the introduction of the flawless mechanical ascertaining machines in the late nineteenth century and PCs in the twentieth century which rendered them out of date. Technology has vastly improved allowing for us to easily calculate these equations in a matter of minutes.
Napier originally distributed his work on logarithms in 1614 under the title Mirifici logarithmorum canonis description, which deciphers in a real sense as: A Description of the Wonderful Table of Logarithms. The title Napier chose uncovers his high hopes for this strategy - the arrangement of tables dependent on a connection that would be completely "wonder-working" for experts who had never seen anything quite like it before.
