Respond to the following (in less than 250 words) in the spaces provided:
● What are the main objectives in nutrition intervention for cancer patients? ➢ The main objectives are to improve or maintain strength, energy, ability to function, immune function, being able to tolerate the treatment, and a lean body mass. Another main objective is to find and manage nutrition-related side effects of cancer and treatment. Also to prevent nutrient deficiencies and unintentional changes in body weight.
● What are Mr. Palmer’s protein and energy requirements? What are his fluid requirements? ➢ Mr needs about 2600 calories. He would need about 130 to 170 grams of protein per day, also around 2100 or more ML of fluids. He needs to have at least one cup of fluid if he has diarrhea.
● List 3 dietary suggestions to address decreased appetite and nausea. ➢ Three things I would suggest to Mr is to eat high-calorie meals and snacks frequently, even when he is not hungry. I would also suggest that he get help with buying and prepping his food so he can have healthy meals ready for when he needs them. Finally I suggest eating cold foods to help with the nausea.
● List 3 dietary suggestions to address dry mouth (xerostomia). ➢ I would say to Mr is that drink plenty of fluids and keep a water bottle handy at all times to moisten the mouth oral hygiene at least four times per day, but avoid rinses that contain alcohol tart foods and beverages to stimulate saliva production sugar-free chewing gum, hard candy, frozen desserts, and ice pops between meals to moisten the mouth.
