This wikiHow teaches you how to insert an animated GIF into a PowerPoint slide. While you can’t play back GIFs on the PowerPoint mobile app or mobile web browser, you can use the desktop program available for PCs and Macs to both insert and play GIFs.

Things You Should Know

• Go to "Insert > Pictures/Online Pictures" and choose your GIF.
• The inserted image will look like one frame, or a static image, but it will be animated when the PowerPoint is presented.
• You can't use the mobile app to both add and play back GIFs, but you can do both of those with PowerPoint on your computer.

• The GIF you insert into your PowerPoint cannot be played on the mobile app or mobile web browser on Android or iOS. You'll only see the animation when viewing the presentation on a computer.

• If you chose to upload pictures from your computer’s local storage, your file browser will pop up and you’ll need to navigate to and double-click on your GIF to select it. You can filter the file formats that display by clicking File Type (or something similar) and GIF instead of "All File Formats." That way, only file formats ending in GIF will appear.
• Although your GIF displays static on your slide as you edit, the GIF will display properly when you view the slideshow.

How to Insert GIFs in a Google Slides Presentation

There are many and varied ways of captivating your audience with your presentation. One of them is using visually appealing materials so people cannot take their eyes off the slides. In fact, a clever use of GIFs and other images will help you when defining concepts in a cool and modern way. In this post we’ll teach you how to add GIFs to Google Slides themes easily.  

Adding a GIF from your computer

Adding a GIF image from your computer is an easy task. Let’s explore how to do it. But first, as we are going to use some Illustrations by Freepik, you can read this tutorial about how to edit, add and download Stories illustrations !

• Open your Google Slides theme.
• If you want to insert a GIF or change a default one, you can do so.
• Go to the left corner and, in the toolbar, click on Insert, select Image → Upload from computer.
• Choose the GIF you’d like to embed and click Open.
• Move the image if needed in order to adapt it to the design and layout of your slide.
• If you want to resize it, click on the GIF image and the outline appears. Click on any of the blue squares and drag it while you press Shift. This is helpful to keep the image proportioned!

You may prefer using GIFs online instead of downloading them. No problem! Google Slides also gives you the possibility of adding an image by URLs. The process is very much like the previous one. 

• Search for the GIF you would like to add.
• Click on it → Right click → Copy Image address. For instance, we are going to use some Stories illustrations by Freepik here.
• In Insert, select Image → By URLs.
• Paste the link (Ctrl V or Cmd V in Mac).
• Move the image if needed.
• If you want to resize it, place click on the GIF image and the outline appears. Click on any of the blue squares and drag it, but don’t forget to keep Shift pressed!

Google Slides provides a series of tools to change the style of your GIF: you can modify its color, transparency, add animations and so on. Let’s have a look at them.

• Click on the image.
• Select Format options.
• Select Recolor to change the hue of the GIF.
• Click on the drop-down menu and choose any of the available options.
• Click now on Adjustments. It displays a series of options that you can customize, namely three: Transparency, Brightness and Contrast. You can adjust them using the sliding bars.
• If you are not happy with the results, click on Reset to undo the previous changes.

Those are not the only effects that you can apply to GIFs. If it is in consonance with the design of the template, you can also add a drop shadow under it: 

• Click on Drop shadow.
• Choose a color.
• Change its Transparency, Angle, Distance and Blur radius if needed using the three different sliding bars.
• To delete the shadow that you have just created, unselect the Drop shadow button.
• If you want to apply a reflection effect to the GIF, Google Slides includes this option. Click on the Reflection dropdown menu.
• Regulate its Transparency, Distance and Size to tailor it to your needs. For this example, we are only going to show you the features, we are not going to apply any reflection.

Inserting a GIF in a PowerPoint slide is just as easy as inserting any other image. Go ahead and locate the GIF that you'll be using. In this example, we'll use this awesome Final Fantasy VI GIF.

Next, go ahead and open up the PowerPoint presentation and navigate to the slide into which you'll insert the GIF. Once there, head over to the “Insert” tab and click the Pictures” button.

In the window that opens, browse to the location of the GIF, select it, and then click “Insert.”

The GIF will now appear in the slide.

Whether or not you can characterize “GIF” you undoubtedly have an observer and GIF on the internet, you cannot possibly have missed this phenomenon. They characterized the early web, and they are more known now than now. But what exactly is a GIF and how would you use them?

Is a GIF J ust an A nimated I mage ?

In it’s most simple structure, a GIF just an animated image. Just like JPEG or PNG files, GIF files can be used to make still images. Anyway has GIF files and an extraordinary component – it can also be used to create animated images. How can I use GIF in Powerpoint, of which the question is how to embed GIF in PowerPoint fully justified. So, what’s the difference between a GIF and a video?

First, they have no sound, and also, GIF design was not made for animations only. It can not be more obvious; GIFs can contain different images at the same time, and someone can come up with these images that can be loaded with a short pause in between, thus creating illusions of an animation.

Why are GIFs so P opular?

GIFs are popular again they are, similar to memes, and are useful for conveying jokes, feelings, and thoughts. Websites like GIPHY also find it easy to share and create GIFs. Their service is integrated with social media and your smartphone, so they are as easy to use as emoticons or “stickers.”

Why embed GIF in PowerPoint?

When presenting a PowerPoint presentation to an audience is all about sticking out of the crowd and being unique. Using GIFs in your PowerPoint presentation can help you in achieving that. Remember to engage people you are targeting, use elements that catch their attention, and keep them engaged throughout the presentation; this is something the GIF can help you achieve. The fact that these are also constantly moving and looped also looks to focus rarely disappears from a GIF.

Furthermore, there some apparent advantages of using a GIF instead of a video in your Powerpoint presentation. A video often grabs your attention as a presenter when you have to start and pause the video, and then end it. There is a lot that can go wrong with a video. However, all these pitfalls can be easily and avoided by using GIFs instead of videos. But okay, how to embed GIF in PowerPoint then? Soon I will answer that question

Of course, it is not suitable to have GIFs if there are longer films to be played, or if the quality is high on the material being played. However, if you want to save on the file size of your PowerPoint presentation and it is a short card clip, you can use GIF instead of a video.

Using a GIF in PowerPoint

As mentioned earlier, there are several reasons for using a GIF in a PowerPoint presentation. We have so far focused on the technical aspect, but the most important reason for using a GIF in PowerPoint is short and good – humor. It’s fun with GIFs. The majority of all GIFs you will find on the internet contain a great dose of humor.

That being said, it is also important to be aware that a GIF may not suit all occasions and contacts. For example, if you are to give a lecture to senior executives, you should, in most cases, not use a GIF, as you can easily be perceived as unprofessional. However, if you are going to have a presentation for your students at a school or give an informal lecture to your staff union, it is perfect to use GIFs. But okay, how to embed GIF in PowerPoint then? Soon I will answer that question. First, let’s just make a brief comparison with videos.

GIFs vs. Videos

Videos are usually better to use if there are long segments with the content being presented. The most significant advantage of using GIFs versus videos, besides all the qualitative aspects I’ve talked about before, is file size. As we have written about in other articles, an embedded video can greatly increase the size of the PowerPoint presentation and should, in some cases, be avoided. But okay, how to embed GIF in PowerPoint then? Take it easy; I’ll answer that question soon.

If you use a GIF instead of a video, you will never have any problems with the file size of your PowerPoint presentation.

What is the P urpose of U sing a GIF?

There is really no good answer as to why you should use a GIF or what the purpose of using a GIF is in your particular case. You have to figure that out for yourself. My purpose when using GIFs is to lighten the mood during longer workshops. For example, when it’s time for lunch, you can use a GIF like this:

You simply have to define your own purpose of using GIFs in PowerPoint. A rule of thumb is to use it as an energy boost in informal contexts. Imagine that it can act as an ice-breaker. But okay, how to embed GIF in PowerPoint then? Soon I will answer that question, but first, it is important to know when not to use GIFs.

When S hould you not use a GIF in Y our PowerPoint?

It is impossible to list all situations when you should not use a GIF in your PowerPoint presentation. However, there are general guidelines that you should follow in order not to do away with it. Although your closest colleagues are very fond of GIFs and always offer a good laugh when showing off your latest GIF findings, it is not as certain that your boss laughs just as loudly. There is always a balance here. Some may appreciate your courage to use a GIF in a serious context, while some people will not take you seriously.

The best way to decide whether or not to use GIFs is to try to analyze the context and the audience you will be presenting to. Also, it is crucial to evaluate what the purpose of the presentation is, and what you want your audience to bring back from the presentation.

Four Important Factors to Consider Before Using a GIF in PowerPoint

GIFs and humor go hand in hand, and humor and laughter are something that unites people. However, humor is not always the best way to create an image of professionalism. Paint a scenario for yourself; who do you think is the most professional? Is it your business controller who presents the month’s results calmly and educationally, or is it the person who always offers jokes? If you can create a synergy between professionalism and humor, you will go a long way, but it is crucial to think situationally.

These are factors you should consider before choosing to include GIFs in your PowerPoint presentation:

• Analyze and evaluate the context and your audience.
• Evaluate the purpose of the presentation; what mood do you want to create?
• What do you want your audience to bring back from the presentation?
• How do you want your audience to perceive you? Serious? Humorous?

How to Embed GIF in PowerPoint?

Okay, now there was a lot of theory about GIFs and how these can interact with PowerPoint. Now it’s time to show you how to embed GIF in PowerPoint. It is much simpler than you can imagine.

The reason why it is so simple to embed GIF into PowerPoint is that it is actually a standard image format. Thus, PowerPoint will treat your GIF like a standard image file, and it will, therefore, have the same conditions attached to it. There are three different methods that I recommend, and you will, as usual, apply the one that best suits you and your purposes.

Method 1: Copy & Paste

This method of how to embed GIF in PowerPoint is mainly for those who do not have a saved GIF. Maybe you have found a GIF on a website that you want to use.

1. First, find the GIF you want to use in your PowerPoint presentation; it may be a file on the internet or a file that you have previously saved on your computer.

2. Right-click on your GIF, and press “Copy.”

3. Find the slide in Powerpoint where you want to paste your GIF

4. Right-click on your slide and press “Paste.”

Method 2: Insert Locally Saved GIFs

This method of adding GIFs to your Powerpoint presentation is for those who have a GIF saved on your local device. Follow the instructions below to learn how to embed GIF in PowerPoint.

1. Locate the “Insert” menu in PowerPoint

2. Click on “Pictures”

3. Locate your GIF in file explorer

4. Click on “Import”

Method 3: Insert GIFs from Online Into PowerPoint

This method is for those who want to embed a GIF into PowerPoint, but have not found a suitable GIF yet. Follow the instructions below to learn how to embed GIF in PowerPoint.

2. Click on “Online Pictures”

3. In the search field, enter the keyword that describes the type of GIF you want to find

4. Change the filters to “Animated GIF,” and click Search.

These were the three absolute best methods of how to embed GIF in PowerPoint. Now that you’ve read through these, they feel very obvious and straightforward, but did you know that you can also create a GIF using PowerPoint?

BONUS: Create a GIF of a PowerPoint

Now the focus has been entirely on how to embed GIF in PowerPoint, but as a bonus, I will also show how you can create a GIF of your PowerPoint presentation. Previously, I wrote about how to create a video in PowerPoint, and now we will use this knowledge to create a GIF. As you have been taught, a GIF sometimes resembles a video.

Why should I convert my PowerPoint to a GIF? Good question! You may only have a few slides that you want to repeat over and over, or need to save storage space. Then it is a very good idea to create a GIF of your PowerPoint. The process is very simple and basically the same as when you convert a PowerPoint to a video, just follow the steps below.

1. Select one or more slides that you want to save as a GIF

2. Open a new PowerPoint presentation and paste the images you selected in the previous step

3. Navigate to “File” and then “Export.”

4. Then select “Create an Animated GIF.”

5. Now choose how long it will take between each slide and then click “Create GIF”.

All done! You have converted your slides into a GIF. The task of finding out how to embed GIF in PowerPoint was a little easier than creating your own GIF, but it was almost as simple as that.

GIFs are guaranteed to grab your audience’s attention. They’re a fun and entertaining way to highlight your content and key messages. Plus, GIFs have smaller file sizes than videos , which saves you loading time. Learn how to create GIFs and insert them into your presentation.

What is an animated GIF?

GIF stands for graphics interchange format. This is a type of bitmap image format that supports up to 8 bits per pixel, allowing an image to have access to a 255-color palette. GIF files are perfect for images with a small color palette and, of course, animations. Also, the file size is usually smaller than JPEG files.

Most GIF files are animated. That is, they’re not static images, like JPEG files, but repeat automatically after a few seconds. Other GIFs only once and stop on the last image.

Why use GIFs?

GIFs are a great choice if you want to liven up your presentation and use movement to attract your audience’s attention. There are so many possibilities for using GIFs:

• GIFs instead of videos → smaller file size and shorter loading time
• Animated logos
• Animated pictograms
• Illustrating trends, data, processes

Always be mindful of using GIFs appropriately. Since GIFs always draw attention, they should be carefully selected so as not to distract from the content of your presentation . To use GIFs effectively, it is advisable to use them sparingly and strategically incorporate them at the right points in the presentation.

The versatility of GIFs allows them to be effectively used in diverse contexts. In casual and informal presentations, humorous or entertaining GIFs can be used to amuse the audience and lighten the mood. In sales or business presentations, GIFs can be employed to present products or services in an engaging way and pique the interest of potential customers.

How to create a GIF

So, you’ve decided to insert a GIF into your PowerPoint? Then you have come to the right place. There are several ways to create a GIF, which we will show below.

Create a GIF directly in PowerPoint

GIFs contain a series of images that are displayed in sequence quickly enough to create an animation. To create these in PowerPoint itself, you can use a transition or, as we’ll explain below, use the slide transition, Morph .

1. Before you start creating, you need to determine the shape and size of your GIF . If you are using a standard widescreen slide, the GIF will also adopt the 16:9 aspect.

2. Open the PowerPoint slide on which you want to insert the GIF.

3. Click on the Design In the Customize group you can set your slide size by clicking Slide Size > Custom Slide Size… .

4. Now insert your desired object, in our case an icon, by going to the Insert tab and selecting Icons in the Illustrations group.

5. Choose an icon and create a duplicate of the slide in the thumbnail view by pressing Ctrl+Shift+D (A Morph transition needs two slides with the same object).

6. Now go to the slide with the duplicate and make any changes you want to the icon. For example, change the position, the color or text .

7. Click on the duplicate icon and go to Transition > Morph in the Transition to This Slide group.

8. Stay on the Transitions tab and go to Effects Options . There you can choose how you want the transition to work.

9. Select Objects , as in our example.

10. Click Preview in the Transitions tab to see what your Morph transition will look like.

11. Now go to File > Export and select Create Animated GIF .

12. Select the file size you want and click Create GIF .

13. In the same window, you can also choose how many Seconds to spend on each slide .

14. A progress bar for your GIF file will appear in the status bar at the bottom. This normally takes only a few seconds.

Create a GIF in Photoshop

Looking to create your own content and use custom images to make a GIF for your key messages? No problem. Photoshop allows you to turn your own images into GIFs. This is how you do it:

For this tutorial, you need the Photoshop image editor and some experience using it.

1. Remember to use a tripod when taking pictures so that they are taken from the same perspective.

2. Modify each captured image the way it should appear later in the GIF sequence.

3. Make sure all your pictures have the same number of pixels .

4. Import the pictures to a Photoshop file under File > Scripts > Load Files Into Stack . This opens a window. Click Browse to find your pictures. Hold down the Shift key , select your photos, click Open and OK . Your photos will now be imported into a single layer file. On the right side, you’ll see several new layers. These will become the frames of your GIF.

5. Now it’s time to design a frame animation. To do this, go to Window > Timeline at the bottom of your workspace.

6. Click the arrow on the button in the middle of the panel and select Create Frame Animation . Your first photo will now be inserted into the timeline for you.

7. To convert layers into animation frames, go to the upper-right corner of the Timeline panel and click the menu icon. Now select Make Frames From Layers .

8. If your photos are playing in reverse order, go back to the Timeline menu icon again and select Reverse Frames .

9. Click under each frame and select how long it should appear for before switching to the next frame. A transition of one to five seconds is optimal.

10. You can also set an infinite loop for your GIF, copy, paste, and flip the images. Before copying and pasting, set the playback time so you don’t have to set it again for each copy. To copy the images, click on the first image, hold down the Shift key and click on the last image. Then go to the right menu and click Copy Frames . Then switch to Paste Frames in the same menu.

11. When the Paste Frames window opens, be sure to select Paste After Selection . Now you can reverse the frames.

12. Go back to the menu and click on Reverse Frames (as in point 8). Two identical frames should now appear in the center. Delete one of them so that your GIF doesn’t lag.

13. You can preview your GIF by clicking the play button at the bottom of the timeline window.

14. Now save your file as a GIF. First make sure the infinite loop is set to Forever (in the bottom left corner). Now select File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) to save it.

Find animated GIFs on the internet

Want to insert a GIF into PowerPoint but don’t want to create your own? You can find GIFs on the web using PowerPoint’s online image search .

In PowerPoint, go to Insert > Pictures > Online Pictures… . or Insert Clip Art for older PowerPoint versions. Go to the search box and type animated GIF . Now you can select a GIF from the category you want.

Tip: There is a wide range of online tools and resources available that allow you to create and download GIFs. These tools often offer easy-to-use interfaces and various editing options to customize the desired GIF. Some tools also provide features to optimize the GIF file size to reduce loading times.

Additionally, there are websites that offer a variety of high-quality and royalty-free GIFs that can be used in presentations. Using such resources saves time and allows you to find or create engaging GIFs for your presentation.

How to insert a GIF in PowerPoint

Now that you know how to create GIFs, let’s show you how to insert them into PowerPoint:

For Windows:

1. Select the slide where you want to insert the GIF.

2. Now go to Insert > Pictures . This will open the Insert Picture From drop-down menu.

3. Select the file you want from one of the locations in the drop-down menu and click Insert .

2. On the Home tab under Insert , go to Picture > Picture from File .

3. In the window that opens, browse for the file you want and click Insert .

How to play animated GIFs

You’ve inserted your GIF on a slide and it still appears as a just a picture. Don’t worry, with just a few clicks, you can play back your GIF.

1. Go to the Slide Show tab.

2. In the Start Slide Show group, click From Current Slide .

3. The GIF file will now play in a continuous loop.

1. Go to the Slide Show menu.

2. Now select Play from Current Slide .

How to adjust the animation loop frequency

Your GIF is now inserted into PowerPoint and playing in an endless loop. To set how often it plays , use the online editor at ezgif.com .

Go to the GIF frame extractor on ezgif.com and upload your GIF file. You can set the repetition by selecting Split to frames > Edit animation > Loop count > Make a GIF! Save the new file and paste it into the presentation again.

Some limitations when using GIFs

Keep the following points in mind when using a GIF in PowerPoint:

• GIFs start automatically when you switch to a slide. This means that it’s not possible to control playback with a mouse click, so keep this in mind during your presentation.
• GIFs have only 256 colors , which can reduce the image quality for photos.
• You can’t create transparent areas with a GIF.
• You can’t crop a GIF.
• Large File Size: To use GIFs effectively in presentations, it’s important to optimize their file size . Large GIFs can slow down loading times and impact the presentation. By reducing the color palette, using compressed images, and limiting the animation duration, the file size of GIFs can be reduced without significantly compromising visual quality. Optimizing the file size ensures smooth playback of GIFs and enhances the user experience during the presentation.

How to Build an Org Chart in PowerPoint: Expert Guide

Creating an  organizational chart  (org chart) in  PowerPoint  is an efficient way to visually represent a company’s structure. Org charts are beneficial for presentations, showing hierarchy, and clarifying roles within a team or organization.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of building an org chart in PowerPoint, covering essential features and customization options to make your chart stand out.

Why Use an Org Chart in PowerPoint?

An  org chart  helps illustrate the hierarchy, relationships, and roles within an organization. PowerPoint is a practical tool to create these visuals due to its accessible features and customization capabilities. 

Org charts in PowerPoint  can be used in business presentations, team meetings, or for HR purposes, making it easy for viewers to understand the organization’s structure.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating an Org Chart in PowerPoint

Step 1: open powerpoint and select a slide layout.

• Open PowerPoint  and create a new slide or choose an existing one.
• Select a  blank slide layout  for better control over your org chart placement and size.

Step 2: Insert a SmartArt Graphic

PowerPoint’s  SmartArt feature  provides built-in layouts for org charts.

• Go to the  Insert  tab on the ribbon.
• Select  SmartArt  in the Illustrations group.
• In the  SmartArt Graphic  dialog box, select the  Hierarchy  category.
• Organization Chart : A simple layout with boxes arranged in a hierarchy.
• Name and Title Organization Chart : Boxes with placeholders for both names and titles.
• After selecting a style, click  OK  to insert it into the slide.

Step 3: Add Text to Your Org Chart

• Click inside each box  to type names, job titles, or departments. PowerPoint allows you to directly edit text within SmartArt shapes.
• Use  [Enter]  to add additional text lines within a box if needed.
• To rearrange positions, simply click and drag boxes within the chart.

Step 4: Customize Your Org Chart’s Layout

To make your  org chart  visually engaging, customize the layout and appearance.

• SmartArt Tools : When the org chart is selected, the  SmartArt Design  and  Format  tabs appear on the ribbon.
• Standard : Traditional hierarchy layout.
• Both : Allows subordinates to be displayed below a supervisor.
• Left Hanging : Positions subordinates to the left.
• Right Hanging : Positions subordinates to the right.
• Experiment with these layouts to find the best fit for your org chart.

Step 5: Add or Remove Boxes

Adding and removing boxes is simple and lets you customize the chart’s structure further.

• Add Shape After : Adds a box at the same level as the selected box.
• Add Shape Below : Adds a box below the selected box.
• Add Assistant : Adds a position below the selected box, but offset to indicate a unique relationship.
• Remove Box : Select the box you want to delete, then press  Delete  on your keyboard.

Step 6: Change Colors and Styles

Make your org chart visually appealing by modifying its colors and styles.

• Select your chart, then go to the  SmartArt Design  tab.
