Too Late by Colleen Hoover, review: This dark, twisted thriller needs every one of its trigger warnings

Too late is considerably darker than some of the author's other books - and certainly not for the faint hearted.

Two striking facts about the Colleen Hoover Phenomenon . The first is that the US writer is one of the best-selling English language authors of current times, with more than 20 million books sold. The second is that you still probably haven’t heard of her, unless you are, on average, a young woman aged 15-30 who likes reading and uses TikTok – the social media platform that made Hoover famous.

Her “new” book, Too Late , is not quite new – it has been self-published in several formats over the past 10 years. But it has now been edited and revised and this is the definitive mainstream version – much-sought-after among her completist fans.

Too Late is considerably darker than some of her other books. It most resembles the 2018 Verity – a toxic take on Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca that makes the original look like a fairytale – and Hoover herself says it is “twisted” and has “screwed up characters and extremely graphic situations”.

She’s not kidding. It is not for the faint of heart. As with many of her books, chapters are told from different perspectives: we have the heroine Sloan, and hero Carter – but then there are sections from a sociopathic villain who is given equal time. Sloan is in a toxic relationship with this villain, criminal drug trafficker Asa; the way he controls her will make your flesh-crawl. Good guy Carter is an undercover agent working to bring Asa down. The complication is – you’d never guess – that Carter and Sloan fall in love.

So far, so enjoyable as a romantic thriller. But there is no getting around one issue: many of the passages told from Asa’s point of view are very uncomfortable. The sex scenes involving him are frightening and destabilising – we don’t know what his limits are. He threatens and chokes Sloan, and describes having sex with her, in detail, to another man. It is a long way from erotic.

With stories ranging from the light romance of November 9 to the domestic violence themes of It Ends with Us , Hoover’s books are very varied – surely a good thing – and they are considered to come under the category of New Adult Fiction: books aimed at the post-YA (18-30) bracket, where the heroine resembles the reader and is given a relatable setting with added adventures.

Too Late fulfils that description – it could be set in any US college town, and has minimal description (presumably so the reader can insert herself into the heroine’s role).

But while its backdrop is run-of-the-mill, the plot twists are wild and imaginative and there are some good turns of phrase in Hoover’s prose – when Sloan is forced by Asa to wear an engagement ring, she says, “I didn’t know Hell had so much sparkle”.

Too Late originally appeared online chapter by chapter, which held its own attraction for readers, and Hoover has said she found their comments very helpful. The new version has been tidied up and given a much clearer structure, and one of the most unnerving sex scenes has been removed. And even a book as dark as this one offers Hoover’s trademark tropes: funny, flirty conversations, a charming hero, and an idealised but sometimes surprising heroine. So it’s a good bet that this will be another big hit – her last book, It Starts With Us , had an initial print run of 3 million when it was published last year.

Last week on a tube train I realized that the young woman next to me was reading a different Hoover book – I asked her a few questions and it turned out that two other people in the carriage had read her too. She is truly a phenomenon. My new friend told me Hoover’s books were the first fiction she had read since leaving school, and she was now reading other authors. Perhaps that’s the worthwhile role of Hoover books, and Too Late certainly succeeds as a thriller, with its page-turning pacing, and moments where you are truly scared for the characters. I even shouted out “No!” when Carter did something particularly stupid.

The book has trigger warnings for “foul language, graphic sexual scenes, murder, sexual assault, and drug use” – a handy reminder that although it is readable and gripping, as the author herself says, it should absolutely not be on the Young Adult shelves.

With only one book left on my Colleen Hoover list after finishing this one, I can’t wait to review  Too Late  for you guys! One of the most twisted Colleen Hoover books I’ve ever read (it’s literally on par with  Verity), Too Late was a little hard to get through at times, but I generally enjoyed it… until the end.

Sloan has never had it easy in life. With a brother who needs special care due to his mental and physical illnesses, a mother who is completely absent, and a drug dealer boyfriend who is abusive in all the worst ways, Sloan doesn’t know what it feels like to be loved. Until she meets Carter. 

Carter is an undercover cop (whose real name is Luke) trying to bust Sloan’s boyfriends as one of the most prolific drug dealers on a college campus. There’s only one problem, though: Carter is falling for Sloan and she’s the one thing that off-limits and could ruin his investigation. But what happens when Sloan gets endangered by her boyfriend? What happens when Carter is stuck between his investigation and his heart?

Alright, so this book was very different from all of Colleen Hoover’s other books. It gave me  Verity vibes (even though  Verity was much better in my opinion) because of the absolute psychological mess it puts you through. I tagged this book as adult because it has too much descriptive content in my opinion to be considered young adult. Also, this book has  so many triggers,  so before you start reading it, please please check for trigger warnings first!

The first half of this book was really good. I was into it even if I thought some of the main characters’ decisions were questionable. It was a good read even with the obscene amount of explicit scenes, but after the first half, it felt choppy and just weirdly formatted. This is also the number one thing I saw people complain about for this book was the second half. I talk more about it in the spoilers, but there’s an epilogue halfway though the book, and then an epilogue to the epilogue. If it just would’ve been told in chapters, I think it would’ve fixed that problem.

Okay, so, Asa as a character was very complicated. I sympathized for Asa’s childhood, but know that it doesn’t give him any reason to act the way he does in the book. He’s absolutely horrible… but at the same time, I can see why he is. He is still a bad person, but a lot of it can be attributed to his messed up childhood. 

Sloan, on the other hand, also had a messed up childhood even though it isn’t explored as much as Asa’s. She turned out the exact opposite, though, of him. I think part of that can be due to the fact that she had siblings and her focus was on them and making their childhood better instead of focusing on what made her childhood worse. 

Luke was… Luke. He wasn’t very dimensional in my opinion. He was the definition of “the good guy” and that’s all he really had going for him. I also found his quick relationship with Sloan to be a little unbelievable, but I like slow-burn romances better anyway. 

Spoilers ahead.

I promised I would talk about that ending and here we are at the spoilers! But, I wanna talk about some other things first. 

The thing that honestly disturbed me the most in this book was when Luke and Sloan literally do the deed in front of Asa after shooting him. I mean… dear Lord that was messed up on so many levels. First of all, how do you even get in the mood to do something like that in front of someone? I could never. Secondly, it was just… I mean, it felt so wrong. When you do that with another person, it should be for love and love only. Not for revenge. It was weird. 

Anyway. Onto the ending. It didn’t bother me as much as it bothered other readers because I was expecting that epilogue and then the epilogue to the epilogue. In my opinion, this was a poor choice on Colleen Hoover’s part. I get that she was a new writer and you still have so much to learn at that point in your career, but calling it an epilogue halfway through the book? And then having a prologue? And then an epilogue to the epilogue? If she just would’ve went with chapters instead, I think people wouldn’t have been bothered by it as much had she just gone to the next chapter instead of calling it an epilogue. 

Also, with the ending, my God did Sloan go through it. Three times? Three times she let Asa freaking assault her. I wanted to puke. It was so gross and I did not enjoy reading it at all. All I could think was when the heck would it be over?

Rant over. 

Overall, this is a decent book and was entertaining, so I didn’t really hate it as much as I’ve seen some other people hate it. There are many triggering parts, but it just reminded me of all the triggers in  Verity , so I feel like I’ve seen this side of CoHo before. You might find that  Too Late drags at points, but it wasn’t that hard for me to finish it. This is probably one of my longer reviews, but I just had a lot to say! Not the best Colleen Hoover book, but not the worst either. Just one more for me to read until I’m finished with all of her novels 🙂

I admired Sloan. I found her character compelling. There may be persons who would have negative things to say about her choice to stay with Asa, but I get why she did it. Her willingness to put her brother’s care above her physical and mental safety showed her selfless nature. Finding an alternative means of helping her brother seemed impossible. I admit there were a few times I wished she would fight back, but then I reconsidered knowing that to do so could prove to be more harmful.Luke may be cute, but when it came to police work, he made stupid mistakes. I could probably blame his mistakes on the fact that he had fallen in love, but as a cop in a dangerous situation, he should never allow his emotions to dominate his thinking.In my years of reading, I have encountered a few crazy characters but Asa proved the craziest of the bunch. The things he did to keep Sloan with him was creepy. He gets off on other people’s fear and for him love is all about control.

The shocking revelation about Asa’s past helped me to understand how he became the person he now, but I still did not like him. I felt sympathy for him as a child but there was none for the adult version. He may have been crazy, but he was very smart and that made him dangerous.

I enjoyed seeing Sloan and Carter together. He may not have been good at his duties as an undercover cop, but when it came to loving Sloan, he excelled.

There were some intense moments when they were together. Asa monitored her every move and so I feared for them whenever they were together. I kept wondering if Asa would catch them together and feared the outcome if he did.

Conclusion/Recommendation The story took me on a nerve-wracking journey. It covered a myriad of disturbing topics that may not be for everyone. If you are turned off by abusive situations, then you may want to avoid this book. However, if you are like me and like stories that are dark and suspenseful then you will enjoy Too Late.

This sounds like such a page turner! I like stories where a cop goes undercover, and the added element of the crazy drug dealer, Asa, as well as a love story between, makes this sound like such a great read!

#review ~ too late by colleen hoover.

I never read a Colleen Hoover book before, you ask yourself why did she start with this one. A Wattpad story that was written in bits and pieces over time? Well I can tell you I am glad I started with this one. The subject matter hit a little close to home. Things I refuse to talk about and what a lot of people probably don’t know. I also have no plans to explain it all in a review so lets move on and just say, I totally understand Sloan why you stayed and did what you did.

Sloan is in a bad place, Asa is completely messed up and Carter is the good guy. I actually liked each character. Even with all the crap Sloan is going through I felt she had a good head on her shoulder and she was a very strong character. A lot of what she was doing was for her brother, so I get that and I understand how scary it must be to be involved with a lunatic like Asa. This story was told in Sloan, Asa and Carter’s POV and I loved, with all my heart loved, that you got to see inside Asa’s head. It was so f’d up and he made me so very angry. I was honestly on the edge of my seat when every I read reading in Carter or Sloan’s POV. I was panicked for them and I might have had a nervous breakdown at some point in the middle of this book.

At the book comes to the end you get a lot of Carter, Asa, Sloan, Prologue, Epilogue, etc. I thought must of this really gave you a well rounded story however, I also felt it may have been a bit to much. I know this was something she wrote to help her with writers block, so I see why it might have had so many “chapters” after the Epilogue. I actually enjoyed them, just   one I could have done without. It was a little hard to read.

Too Late was amazing, I really felt the emotions, fear, stress, love, sympathy, everything this book had. I laughed at the game they play (snot out loud laughed) and cried at the pain. This book pulled me in so many direction. I know some of her other books are nothing like this one but after reading this I am a total fan of her. I love how she didn’t hold back, you got the raw view of an abusive person, who sees nothing wrong with what they are doing and the victim that has to deal with so much and cant escape. I really liked this book, I know it warns you in the synopsis but I will warn you also, it has a LOT of triggers so please read with caution. Highly recommend!

While trying to figure out how to leave her tumultuous situation and still pay for her brother’s private healthcare, Sloan meets Carter, the nice guy in her Spanish class who changes everything. He’s also the guy who puts them all in more danger as the days go by.

Carter is an undercover DEA agent, but Sloan has no idea. Can they keep their mutual attraction under wraps before Asa finds out and kills them both? Sloan and Carter need to find a way out before it’s too late…

Compelling Psychological Thriller

“Love is not found, love finds.”

Too Late covers a lot of complex topics, from drug, physical and mental abuse, to cheating and mental illness. As Sloan tries to escape the abusive and dangerous Asa, she follows her heart towards Carter, but fears what could happen to both of them if the truth was revealed. The tension and danger looming over their romance makes this domestic and psychological thriller utterly compelling.

However, there are also other important topics that are covered below the surface, including the lengths that families need to go to care for a sick relative and afford that care. This book is not for the faint-hearted, so much so that the book contains a handful of trigger warnings at the start, letting readers know what they’re getting themselves into.

Colleen Hoover has written the all-too-familiar hero/damsel in distress trope, where Sloan suffers until Carter acts as the knight in shining armor, swooping in to save her from her own misfortune. But ultimately, the decision to be free of Asa’s grip isn’t much of a decision at all — Sloan has to escape or die trying, with Carter by her side. And when Asa tricks his entire crew and gets Carter to admit who he really is, everything falls apart — and quickly.

Love, Abuse and Mental Illness

The emotional and physical toll that a toxic relationship can have on a person is unimaginable, but it is a complicated dynamic that Hoover doesn’t shy away from tackling in several of her novels. Though the subject matter may be intense, her writing is always reliable and comforting. You always know what you’re getting when you crack open a Hoover book.

Out of all of Colleen Hoover’s characters, Carter is one of the best male leads she’s written. He’s kind, thoughtful, smart and incredibly attractive — who could complain! He is a man who knows what he wants and what’s important. Though he may make some mistakes along the way, he has one goal — to protect Sloan. Even Sloan’s brother, who is non-verbal, finds a way to express how much he likes Carter — and that just says it all.

This book really made me think about how hard situations don’t always have a clear solution and how love should not be an added weight to someone’s life. We’re not just dealing with one of the many issues of love, abuse and mental illness mentioned above, but everything all at once, making it read almost like a fantasy novel, from my perspective. This is yet another thrilling read from Colleen Hoover and I’m sure her other fans are ready to devour this one.

If you’re a thriller and/or dark romance lover and you haven’t read “Too Late” by CoHo…what are you waiting for?!

This is hands down my favorite CoHo book since Verity.

I’m not sure why I haven’t seen more about it across the Book community although I know it was a Wattpad favorite.

I loved these characters. I loved that we got Sloan, Asa and Carter/Luke’s POV. I got all the things I loved from CoHo: twists, strong character development and emotional impact, but this was just in a darker format.

That being said this is a DARK romance with a lot more explicit content than CoHo usually has, so please check TW’s. I’ve noticed that this is a pretty polarizing read – you either love it or don’t. So if you’ve read it let me know what you think!
