How you package yourself is important, but the bottom line is that you need to have done your market research and got your product right. It’s no good trying to hide behind waffle, platitudes or fancy words that don’t actually mean a lot, it’s what lies behind your words that matters.

Be honest and down-to-earth

An honest, well-researched, and engaging statement that shows you understand what you’re applying for, and that you’ve got relevant skills or experiences to offer, will usually fit the bill.

Write reflectively about your experience. That could be what you’ve gained from your Saturday job at a supermarket, the book you’ve just read on branding, the charity event you recently helped to organise, a business project you just undertook on your BTEC or A level course or why your Young Enterprise company didn't make a profit.

Your examples don't have to be high-flying. Even shadowing the marketing director of a multi-national company won't impress if you don't explain what you learned from it.

Bournemouth University highlights that demonstrating qualities like creativity, an understanding of the marketing and communications industry, your ability to work in a team as well as independently, good presentation and communication skills and computer literacy will help to give marketing students the edge .

Show your enthusiasm for marketing

Sheffield Hallam University expects you to demonstrate 'an interest in and awareness of business/marketing, or some level of practical experience'. Similarly, Leeds Metropolitan University’s sport marketing degree tutors will be scanning your statement for evidence of the 'personal attributes, experience and/or commitment to the area of study that will stand you out from the crowd'.

Note the word 'or' in those examples. Whilst it’s great if you've got some relevant work experience, it's not essential and there are other ways you can show you’ve got what it takes.

University of Bath says its management with marketing degree applicants should be able to demonstrate experience of working with others and relevant transferable skills, but that this could be achieved, for example, through your involvement in the running of a society or a position of responsibility at school or college if you haven't had direct experience.

York St John University flags the value of your reflections on any relevant workshops or seminars you've attended, or how you've shown leadership and teamwork skills through project work or awards such as Duke of Edinburgh.

Marketing personal statement dos and don'ts

• Focus on why you want to study marketing and pursue a career in it – our marketing subject guide is a good starting point for this.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of business , the role you feel marketing plays in the success of any business operation, or an awareness of how marketing is responding to a changing world.
• Highlight any marketing or business operation you’ve been involved in yourself.
• Comment on something interesting you've found in newspapers or industry-related magazines, by following key industry figures on social media or when meeting business professionals face-to-face.
• Write something revealing about what you’ve learned from work experience or a part-time job where you've made some relevant observations or demonstrated skills or commitment.
• Include examples from enterprise schemes at school or college. This can be just as valuable as real workplace experience, as long as you say something interesting about it. Don’t worry if you weren’t successful: it’s ok to discuss what went wrong as well as what went right, provided you learned from it.
• Give them a balanced, rounded picture of yourself as a potential student: your achievements, evidence of your key strengths and qualities, a project you’ve undertaken, or the subjects you’ve found genuinely interesting and how they’ve enhanced your potential as well as your interests outside the academic world.
• List everything you’ve done.
• Exaggerate or make something up , as it may come back to haunt you.
• Over-sell yourself . Write in a calm tone and give clear, concise examples of activities you’ve been involved in.
• Go back more than two or three years . Keep it recent.
• Say you’re good at something . Demonstrate it instead.

Business Management Personal Statement Example

The key to any successful business is good management. In order to adapt to the constant shifts of the global economy, businesses must apply methodical reasoning to people, processes, and technology. I have demonstrated a similarly flexible, adaptable approach to achieving my goals as a mature student with strong academic achievement in Administration and IT and extensive employment experience.

As soon as I graduated from school, I began working. However, as my desire to return to study grew, I combined my work experience with study to earn HNC and HND qualifications in Administration and IT. The IT component of this course has particularly intrigued me because of my interest in how technological processes impact business. It has also been fascinating to learn the theory behind the administrative and organizational practices I have implemented and observed throughout the years.

My experience as a news agent’s kid has given me hands-on experience in both financial and personnel management, including customer service, stock management, and liaising with suppliers. Having always been involved with business and management within the industry, it was perhaps not surprising when I decided to gain more experience in retail. In order to allow my passions for both the technological and financial aspects of these roles to flourish, I sought out experiences that allowed these passions to flourish. I used my expertise in providing excellent customer service while working as a Telephone Banking Advisor for Porta Wealth Management to counsel clients on the best services, weighing the benefits and drawbacks of various products in relation to their needs. Additionally, I was in charge of looking after databases, working on banking policies, and implementing rules set forth by the FSA. Moving between small, local firms and multinationals has allowed me to study the differences in administration and management, as well as how technology affects these.

As an ambitious student with a keen interest in business and management, I am constantly seeking out new ways to further my understanding and skill set. In my spare time, I delve into a diverse array of management techniques and put them into practice in both my personal and professional life, allowing me to achieve my goals and aspirations. Management Personal Statement Example

Being a very determined and studious individual academically, I knew a university degree was an obvious next step. In spite of my broad interests, I am drawn toward a law or business management degree. As far as Business is concerned, I chose it because of its complexity and intrigue. Management blends so seamlessly with everyday issues that I particularly enjoy. In taking the subject at A-Level, my interest has grown and matured, and I can view many businesses analytically and make suggestions regarding improvements. Law is an area which has interested me from an early age. I am an avid reader and believe that this habit is crucial when it comes to pursuing a career in law. I feel that my attributes make me an ideal candidate for the field as I possess a keen attention to detail and am intrigued by work that deals with contemporary social issues and the need to analyze and present evidence effectively. However, among all the experiences, I’ve had the privilege to work for Royal Worcester in the Debenhams store which I believe has been the most formative of all. Being a sales advisor in such a high-end company has taught me to have a self-assured demeanour, and I have also had to cultivate a good memory to be able to provide customers with accurate product knowledge.

Additionally, I was assigned the duty of training a new employee, demonstrating the great level of confidence my employers have in me.

From holding the role of form captain in secondary school to helping with the planning of large-scale festivities in college, my educational experiences have been quite useful to me. These kinds of responsibilities have enabled me to grow up and take my roles seriously, earning the respect of my coworkers. As English Prefect in Year 11, I was responsible for supporting the entire English department, which took up a significant amount of my time. I also had a piece I wrote against the mistreatment of women on French television published in the daily “Paris Local News” as a result of my interest in the French language. I was pleased to have my opinions represented.

I have always been passionate about languages and during secondary school, I took evening French classes. My dedication and hard work were recognized when I received the ‘The Best Student of the Year’ award for my outstanding performance. These classes required me to manage my time effectively, so my schoolwork did not suffer. Furthermore, being raised by German and French parents has helped me to achieve fluency in the language.

Aside from languages, sports and leisure activities have always been an interest of mine. In college, I used this passion to do charity work and raise money for ZBIN. One of my accomplishments includes raising £1050 and abseiling 120ft down London University. 

Additionally, I played netball for the local Netball Team and competed in the OGI UK Games for the Wembley Stallions AFC team. My performance was recognized with several trophies, as well as a gold and bronze medal in the long jump and javelin respectively.

I have always been fascinated by business and the way that companies and large organisations work. From my first steps, I have been an entrepreneur at heart, always finding ways to make a little extra money selling lemonade at the promenade or starting school projects. With my personal development, my interest in business has only intensified, and I have come to realise that business management is something I want to study at school. Universities receive thousands of personal statements alongside students’ applications each year, so writing a UCAS personal statement that stands out among the thousands is an essential requirement to increase your chances of getting accepted onto your chosen course. Read on for useful tips to guide you to achieve a standout personal statement! 

What is a UCAS Personal Statement?

A UCAS personal statement is a brief, standard-format essay explaining who you are in at least 500 words. Personal statements should include what experiences, hobbies, values and goals have shaped your interest in the degree you are applying to obtain.

How to Structure Your UCAS Personal Statement

As your personal statement is considered a standard-format essay, it should ideally include a proper introduction, a main body for your education, work experiences, possible hobbies information and a suitable conclusion at the end; all specifically tailored to your chosen course.

Avoid including any information that you cannot tailor to the course.  A personal statement is like a CV or cover letter, while the university itself is like an organisation you seek employment from; consider what you would do with a cv or cover letter when applying for a particular job, you would tailor it specifically to that job to increase the odds of you being chosen! 

Opening Strong: Crafting an Engaging Introduction

The introduction is the first thing the admissions officer sees, so make it engaging enough to keep them reading through your entire personal statement.

A common mistake is overlooking the importance of the introduction by putting key information somewhere in the middle or close to the end. If you start weak, it may affect how your personal statement is viewed overall. An example of a weak start to an introduction is stating something like ‘I have always known I would be a [inserts course/career of interest]’.

You want to start strong by providing a glimpse of the knowledge you have of your chosen course, you could do this by inserting a quote and commenting on how it has impacted or inspired your interest in the course, demonstrating your knowledge of what the degree content offers. Showcasing Your Academic Achievements

There should be a section of the main body of your statement that highlights your academic achievements, strengths and interests. This is the time to showcase your brilliance and exceptional ways but be careful not to exaggerate or include false information as that may work against you in the long run; especially for courses that involve interviews! Stay true and proud of your achievements, no matter how big or small you think they are, they got you to this stage of your application! 

Demonstrating Passion for Your Chosen Course

In your introduction you gave a glimpse of your interest and knowledge of the course, next you must demonstrate your passion for your chosen course in detail. You want to provide examples that communicate you are completely interested and willing to give full focus into the teachings on the course. 

Including Work Experience and Extracurricular Activities

One way to demonstrate your passion is to include examples of how personal and/or work experiences have shaped your interest to study the course. These experiences can be voluntary, paid, mentored, extracurricular activities (such as summer schools and reading) or anything that has contributed to you wanting to learn about the course.

Notice the word ‘personal’ is used to describe what you are writing, so do not shy away from including personal experiences that relate to your course interest, as it gives the reader a glimpse into your personality. Do not deny them the chance to get to know you by making it overly formal and only including paid employment or academic achievements. If a CV and cover letter provides opportunity to include a bit of personal experiences, imagine how much more can be provided in a personal statement! 

How to Write a Strong Conclusion

For the conclusion, ensure you finish strong. You can give a brief explanation of what you hope to achieve with the degree in question, a summary of your goals and the steps you will take after obtaining your degree. This lets the reader know you see yourself finishing the degree and going on to make use of it to do greater things.

Proofreading and Getting Feedback on Your Personal Statement

Of course, this guide would not be complete without the following advice!   Ensure you have enough time and patience to create a great personal statement, proofread as you go and get others to read through it so they can give you feedback. People who are sure to provide helpful feedback are academic staff, mentors, past or present students (especially those on the same course), family and peers.

My interest in sports stems from an early age. I have always been an active person and have played for a number of semi professional football teams. Whilst doing my A' levels I particular enjoyed the practical and theoretical sides of physical education. This has certainly influenced me in the choice of degree I want to take. I have also pass the CSLA course which involved me teaching to a group of children. I feel this has improved my communication skills and organisation skills

And will help me throughout union whilst studying for my degree

My other key interest is in I.T. Although both courses are very different I feel that the potential to work with computers in a business environment is very appealing. A' level I.C.T has prepared me for effective management as I have become aware of how computerised systems have allowed businesses to become more efficient. I have also learned about various software products which can be used to improve presentation which has widened my knowledge in this subject. I have attended Wolverhampton and Aston universities. These visits have enabled me to research independently my choice of course and helped me to confirm my decision to apply

Throughout my A/S and A level studies I have become more adapt at using my analytical skills. The subjects which I have been studying have given me the confidence to work independently and as part of a team, which I believe are important qualities required for either career direction. I have played an active role in school life, for example I have participated in various charity fund raising events, sponsored silences and football tournaments. Also for a short period of time I have been one of the perfects for the school helping with any problems when needed. I'm also involved in a number of outside school activities: I play for a football and badminton doubles team where I am the captain for both this shows I have good communication skills and shows I'm a responsible person. I attend the gym once a week; this helps to maintain my high fitness levels required for playing for my football team

Throughout my teens I have had experience of working in a business environment where I held the position of being deputy team leader where I had the task of dealing with customer problems, help employ people to the company and helping people to settle in to company and work to the best of their ability

I am a person of great confidence and with a good level of communication and determination. I hope will be offered the opportunity to bring my knowledge and personal skills to a suitable degree course. I not only hope that my experience at university will increase my knowledge of the area I will be studying, but also that during my time there I will be able to continue and develop many of the personal and social hobbies and activities that I already enjoy.

Fashion management/marketing personal statement example.

"Hollie, why do you always look at what people are wearing?" was something my mother said to me in my early teens, and she was right.

To me, fashion is body language. It is a non-verbal form of communication showing a lot about the wearer to the observer. The most enticing aspect of studying a fashion related course is that fashion blossoms on the unexpected.

Developing new ideas in relation to this global industry's future, from how a business best communicates with its consumer or its environmental and cultural concerns, is something that I am whole heartedly interested in. The opportunity of combining my interest in fashion products with management and marketing skills really excites me.

Currently I think some aspects of fashion, like branding, are working with a lack of flexibility and have fallen behind where they could be. In an industry as fast paced as this one the engagement of brand to consumer is critical and adding value to the consumer, along with sustainability, is what I would like to improve.

With over a year of work experience at "Claire's", as a sales assistant, I have gained invaluable fashion retail environment experience and I know that is where I want to be. In "Claire's" I am constantly communicating with and promoting product lines to customers.

This has improved my confidence and interpersonal skills. Visual merchandising has allowed me to advance my creativity and my time management skills through meeting deadlines and has emphasised my attention to detail. I am also responsible for daily statistics reports in which I analyse consumer behaviour, product information and net sales.

This has engaged me into understanding the financial aspect of the business, challenges me to think in a logical and critical manner and continually drives me to meet and surpass targets. Within school, I have been chosen by the teachers and pupils as 'Deputy Head of House' because of my participation in a variety of House events.

This role has added to my organisational and team working skills greatly as I am expected to organise and manage 'House Events' months prior and to communicate with, as well as lead, a large group of people. In addition, my involvement in the Community Service Group involves me presenting information to the rest of the school and being inventive on how to do so.

My study of English has improved my understanding of written and verbal communication and allows me to be creative and innovative.

Undertaking Business Studies at A-level has cemented my desire for a career in marketing management. In particular, I liked the modules about marketing where I learnt about the marketing mix and different marketing plans and strategies.

Also a module called "Principles of Management and Leadership" was one I thoroughly enjoyed where I learnt about effective management in different situations and how to motivate staff. My study of history requires me to compare the effect that the past has had on present situations whilst also considering the perspectives of others.

All of these skills are transferable to the course and will stand me in good stead for life at university. Outside school my main interests are blogging and reading about current fashion trends, as it enables me to be creative and express ideas, which I believe will allow me to enhance the course and which I love to do!

Having been to international fashion capitals such as New York, Paris and London I have also developed a desire to travel, as I can see many different cultures and perceptions of fashion in different countries.

I am eager to participate fully in all aspects of university life from social to academic and relish the opportunity to turn the enthusiasm I have for this field into a full time career, hopefully in fashion marketing.
