My Favourite Festival Christmas Essay for Children

Christmas is the most important festival for the Christians all over the world. It is celebrated on the 25th of December every year.

This festival is celebrated for the birth of Jesus, the Son of God in this world. The celebration of Christmas lasts for twelve days till Epiphany.

Just like how Durga Puja , Diwali is important for the Hindus and Eid for the Muslims; the same way Christmas is for the Christians.

This festival is all about celebrating the birth of Jesus, reuniting with families, decorating the house, exchanging gifts, joyous time with neighbours etc. Christmas brings joy and happiness among everyone.

History of Christmas (Story behind the celebration of Christmas)  

Christmas is celebrated on different dates according to the Gregorian and Julian calendar respectively. In spite of the different dates, the reason of this celebration is still the same.

The history of Christmas goes back to centuries. According to the Gospel from the New Testament of the Bible, Angel of the God spoke to Mary that she will give birth to a son and they will name him Emmanuel, the Son of God.

Mary informed Joseph about this news. So, they decided to get married. They were travelling to Bethlehem for the census. During the journey, Mary was tired.

But they could not get a proper place but a small stable in Bethlehem, Jerusalem. There were many other animals in the stable.

The shepherds were looking after their flocks in the nearby fields. When Jesus was born, an angel appeared to these shepherds. The angel informed them about the birth of Jesus whom they would find in a manger.

Soon, the three Magi or the three Wise Men came to know about this and they travelled to the place where the star was in the sky.

When they reached the place where the star was, they found baby Jesus. They knelt down in front of him and gave gifts to baby Jesus. These gifts were of gold, frankincense and myrrh.   

This is the reason why Christmas is celebrated. Jesus was sent by God to save the world from sins and danger. God sent his only son in the world so that we humans have a wonderful life without any suffering and trouble.  

What is the reason of celebrating Christmas on 25 th  December?  

No one knows when exactly the birth of Jesus was. There is no mention in the Bible about the date when Jesus was born.

But, there are some instances in the Bible which can tell that Jesus was born much before 25 th  December. First, Mary and Joseph were travelling for the census.

Census refers to the counting of people in the city. No census is held in any city during winter. Second, according to the Bible when Jesus was born the shepherds were looking after their flocks in the nearby fields.

During winter the shepherds do not leave their flocks out.

Instead, they search for shelter of their flocks. Then why is Christmas celebrated on 25 th  December? During the fourth century, the Roman church was growing and there was a wide spread of Christianity. But before that Pagans were ruling the land and December 25 th  was important day for them.

They celebrated this day for the birth of Sun God. The Roman Church adopted this day because the pagans started to enter the church.

So, they kept this day as the celebration of the birth of Jesus so that the Christians could be diverted from the feast of Pagans. So, the birth of Sun God was celebrated was as the birth of the Son of God by the Christians.   

How is Christmas celebrated?  

The Christmas preparation starts with the beginning of the season of Advent. The season of Advent starts after the feast of Christ, the King. The season of Advent is similar to the season of Lent.

But people do not abstain the way it is done during Lent. Christians all over the world prepare for the coming of Jesus. Much before 25 th  December, the houses are cleaned and set to be decorated.

Few weeks before Christmas groups of children and elders go from one house to another singing Christmas carols. The Christmas carols are hymns about the birth of Jesus.

There are many Christmas carols like- Joy to the world, Angels we have heard on high, Hark the herald, Long time ago in Bethlehem, Jingle Bell, Sing Noel, Go tell it on the mountain, Oh holy night etc.

The Christmas carols make everyone excited for Christmas. The children are excited for Christmas from a long time. Christmas means gifts and Santa Claus for them. They believe that on the eve of Christmas Santa Claus will come to give gifts to them.

The family members start to decorate the home a few days before Christmas. They make a small stable with the statues of baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, angel, three Wise men, shepherds and the animals.

This small depicts the scene of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The house is decorated with lights, stars, flowers and other decorative stars.

A big star is hung at the top of the house similar to the star which was in the sky when Jesus was born. Christians attend midnight mass for the Christmas celebration.

On the day of Christmas, they pray, sing Christmas songs, eat delicious food, celebrate with loved ones and give sweets to their neighbours.   

Christmas is not just about good food, new clothes or stars or Christmas trees. This day is to remember the birth of Jesus Christ who came to this earth to save us from sins.

Even though there is no exact date about the birth of Jesus and people celebrate it on different dates according to their calendar or on a day when Jesus was not even born.

This is not important when he was actually born. The thing that matters to us is that how do we welcome the coming of Jesus. Does only celebration means Christmas to us? Is it more than that?

Christmas is celebrated every year on 25th December. However, the precise date of the birth of Jesus is unclear. December 25th was  1st celebrated as the date of birth of Jesus by Sextus Julius Africanus in 221. Later on, it became a universally accepted date. One explanation is that 25th December is the Christianizing of the dies solis invicti nati or day of the birth of the unconquered sun”. It is also a popular Roman holiday. Thus, the 25th of December became a widely accepted day as the birth of Jesus. The festival was widely celebrated starting from the 9th Century. By the end of the 18th Century, the practice of giving presents became established.  Later on, the practice of singing carols such as ‘Deck the Halls’,  “Here We Come A-Wassailing”, the central role of Santa Claus, and sending cards became popular.

Homes are decorated with colorful rangoli, and families exchange gifts and sweets. The evening sky is ablaze with fireworks, creating a spectacle of light and color.

Diwali is not just a festival of external celebrations; it’s also a time for inner reflection and renewal. It reminds us of the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Diwali encourages us to embrace goodness, compassion, and unity.

Along with other religious celebrations, Christmas was banned in Russia after the 1917 Revolution. Russians could only openly observe Christmas in 1992. The Russian Orthodox church – and almost all Russians – celebrate Christmas (the birth of Jesus) on 7 January. It’s mainly a religious occasion, when families gather together to attend church services on Christmas Eve (6 January). They then go home to feast on a special holy supper, which includes  kutia , a porridge with raisins. Some people attend all-night vigils at church; others just go on Christmas morning.

Tatyana’s Day is Russian Students Day. When Elizabeth, Empress of Russia signed a decree to establish Moscow State University on 25 January 1755 – the saint’s day of third-century Christian martyr St Tatyana – St Tatyana became the patron saint of students. Most university towns have St Tatyana celebrations, holding balls and choosing the best Tatyana from the students.

The Magic Ice of Siberia is an international competition on the banks of the Yenisei River in Krasnoyarsk. Teams of sculptors, architects, and artists create massive frozen artworks to compete in two categories: snow and ice.

Seven weeks before Easter are the week-long Maslenitsa festivities – Russia’s pancake week. They combine the pagan tradition of marking the transition from winter to spring with the Christian tradition of feasting before Lent. Each day there are different activities: making  Maslenitsa  dolls from straw and old clothes, making and eating lots of pancakes ( blini s), sledging, playing on seesaws, singing, fistfights, visiting the in-laws, exchanging gifts, feasting, and drinking tea or vodka. The  Maslenitsa dolls burn on the final day, and people jump over bonfires.

Celebrations start the night before Easter Sunday. Churches fill with lights and, at dawn, the bells ring out to announce the arrival of Easter. Everyone paints boiled eggs in bright colors and has a traditional feast. Typical Easter foods are round sweet bread as well as Easter cake served with sweetened curds, butter and raisins.

Symbolizing women’s equality, most people in Russia refer to International Women’s Day just as the eighth of March. It’s a day for celebrating women’s achievements. People have time off work, workplaces organize celebrations, and everyone gives gifts to the important women in their lives.

The best places to visit in Moscow

The very first Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) was in 1935 when the jury was headed up by world-renowned film-maker Sergei Eisenstein (of  Battleship Potemkin fame). It became a regular event on the cultural calendar in 1959. More than 200 films from 50 different countries are screened, with the best picture winning the Golden George.

The Golden Mask Theater Festival is an all-Russian theater festival and competition. It covers all genres from drama to modern dance and puppet theater. The Golden Mask festivals takes place in Moscow.

Due to St Petersburg’s northerly location, the sun never fully sets in St Petersburg between May and mid-June. You can talk a walk at midnight and still see the sun on the horizon. This provides the romantic backdrop for the annual White Nights Festival, an arts festival with music and dance by Russian and international stars. The Mariinsky Theatre has a program of more than 175 operas, ballets, and classical concerts – and locals snap up tickets pretty quickly. There are carnivals, also, the best being in the suburb of Peterhof where actors dress up in historical costume from the time of Peter the Great and re-enact historical events.

Victory Day celebrates the end of World War II with parades, spectacular fireworks and displays of military strength. The most impressive event is in Moscow ‘s Red Square, where soldiers, tanks, missiles, and other military equipment are on display on the ground while military planes fly overhead. Military memorials all over Russia are spruced up, and there are displays in museums.

The White Nights Festival culminates with Scarlet Sails , the largest annual public gathering in Russia with more than a million people watching a mock pirate battle on the River Neva, a firework show, and a tall ship with sails the color of blood. The event celebrates the end of the school year.

This is a summer solstice celebration related to John the Baptist (Ivan means John and  kupala is related to a Slavic word for bathing) and 23–24 June in the Julian calendar is used by the Orthodox church. Girls wear flower or herb wreaths on their heads, and in the evening the wreaths are decorated with burning candles and set afloat; the girl whose wreath travels the farthest will have the happiest year ahead, and the candle that burns the longest means a long life. People light bonfires and jump over them for good luck. Some seek a special flowering fern said to direct the finder towards treasure. There are fireworks, of course.

Each year a selection of Moscow’s top restaurants opens their doors for three days of masterclasses and tasting sessions, open to all the family (there’s usually a special entertainment zone with a children’s menu). There are also zones for different types of food, drink, and music to create a party atmosphere. Around 200 different masterclasses are on offer, for both Russian and international foods.

This large, open-air world folk music festival takes place in the Ethnomir complex in Moscow every summer. Over several days, Russian and international musicians perform a variety of folk-based genres – afro-beat, ethno-jazz, raga, Russian folk – and there are also food stalls, markets, and body and soul workshops.

This big, open-air rock festival focuses on Russian rock bands. Nashestvie is organized by Russian rock station Nashe Radio (the station responsible for Russia’s major rock music chart, Chart Dozen). The festival’s name means invasion in Russian but many people call the festival the Russian Woodstock. It’s a good place to see both established and up-and-coming musicians from around Russia and neighboring states.

This may just be a one-day event but it’s one of the oldest and best-known music festivals in Russia. It’s held in the grounds of Kolomenskoye, a former Tsar’s estate on the banks of the Moscow River. It attracts big Russian and international names such as the Kaiser Chiefs, Courtney Love, Jamiroquai and Madness.

There’s a big parade in Red Square and many other events, usually around the Kremlin, to celebrate the communist revolution in 1917/1918.

All Russian cities have Winter Festivals celebrating the best of Russian culture, but the biggest and best is in Moscow. This is a huge annual event with activities all around the city, which is decked with thousands of fairy lights. In Izmailovo Park you can also watch performances of folk songs and dances, ice skate, sled or take a ride in one of the three-horse sleighs called  troikas . Gorky Park is famous for its magnificent ice sculptures. In Revolution Square you can buy crafts, eat warm pancakes or bagels spread with jam or honey, listen to a balalaika concert or watch a fashion show.

As Christmas was banned for many years in Russia, many of the Christmas traditions were diverted to the New Year celebrations on New Year’s Eve on 31 December. People now decorate New Year trees instead of Christmas trees and  Ded Moroz  (Father Frost), accompanied by his granddaughter  Snegurochka  (Snow Maiden), delivers presents instead of Father Christmas. Families enjoy feasts, listen to the President’s New Year Speech and the Kremlin clock strikes midnight. Many Russians also celebrate a second New Year on 13–14 January or Old New Year, a tradition dating back to the old Julian calendar. Concerts, carnivals and street fairs – and a large ice rink in Red Square – are part of the fun.

Established in 1992 and named in honor of Russia’s most famous playwright and author, Anton Chekhov, the annual Chekhov International Theater Festival brings together theater companies from all over the world as well as Russia. There are also joint productions. Performances are primarily in Moscow but there are sometimes shows that tour other major cities such as St Petersburg and into the regions.

Every year, from Mid-December to Mid-January, Moscow get a new, wonderful look. It is a time of the annual winter festival “Journey to Christmas” . The theme of the festival and programme change every year. However, there is always a lot of light, music, fairs with food, drinks and souvenirs, cheerful atmosphere and many beautiful Christmas trees .

More than 400 Christmas trees

Usually, more than 400 Christmas trees are installed in the Russian capital in the middle of December. All the trees are artificial, and only one is always natural. It is the main Christmas tree, which is placed on Sobornaya Square inside the Moscow Kremlin. A special commission chooses a spruce during “the beauty contest”: a tree should be high, thick and straight.

The magic woods appear on Manezhnaya and Tverskaya Squares. The towers of the Kremlin and  State Historical Museum between the sparkling spruces remind of fairytale castles. Leading Russian couturiers and young designers create the festive attires for the Christmas trees in Kuznetsky Most street.

Many interesting things for children

During the  Journey to Christmas festival , many interesting things are organized for children . Actors of street theatres come to Moscow from different cities and countries. In the streets, children can see puppet shows, ice ballet performances, stilt walkers and acrobatic skits. Their bright and extraordinary costumes attract everyone. A 100-meter long slide near Red Square, winter games and competitions on Tverskoi Boulevard, merry-go-rounds, workshops held in cozy wooden houses for making New Year gifts and cooking cakes, are the amusements that suit any taste.

How to warm up?

If you feel cold, there are a few ways how to warm up . You can take a glass of mulled wine or traditional Russian sbiten and medovukha and hot pancakes. Alternatively, you can dance or play hockey. Also, there is a 100-meter long ice slide near the Red Square. On the “lawns” among the trees, you can find furnaces and warm your hands.

To warm up and feel the spirit of festivity you can visit the GUM, a big store near the Red Square, where New Year songs, bright decorations, stalls with souvenirs and sweets, as well as the  rows of small Christmas trees create a cheerful mood. Here, you can take a cup of coffee in one of the cafés or take a famous GUM ice-cream, while seating on a bench under the “snow-covered” mount-ash tree in a glass-​roofed gallery.

During the darkest times of the year, Moscow is lit with many lights: laced arches on the squares, light tunnels along the boulevards, “flute-glass of champagne” along the streets. The culmination of “Journey to Christmas”, an annual winter festival in Moscow , is the celebration of the New Year on the Red Square with Kremlin Chimes and fireworks. It is an unforgettable moment. Just be ready that many people have the same plans. After midnight, the central metro stations are open only for exiting to avoid the crowds, so you have to walk to another station to enter the metro.

The Journey to Christmas (Russian: ) festival is one of the biggest and most picturesque annual festivals in Moscow. This festival is a blend of the traditional and contemporary elements of Russian Christmas fun fairs. The festival is a Christmas tradition going back many years.This festival is celebrated with festive events throughout all the Moscow districts. Journey into Christmas is celebrated in 38 themed islands.

These themed islands include Royal Square in New Pushkinsky park, Island of good deeds on Trubnaya Square, Island of Bethlehem Star on Prechistenka Street, Island of masks on Kamergersky lane, Island of Masters and Island of Christmas Wonders on Nikolskaya Street, and Island of Music on Poklonnaya Hill. 

Visitors can view the famous huge New Year ornaments at the Manezh Square, near the Kremlin. This place is one of the most popular attractions in Moscow. During the “Journey to Christmas” festival, the ball’s size is significantly increased. This ball is decorated with 9.5km of LED lights. This glowing ball is really a sight to behold. 

There is a lot to see and do at Red Square during this season. Visitors can visit a special Christmas market which is set up on the square.  Visitors can buy memorable souvenirs such as khokhloma painted toys, music boxes, scarves and a wide arrangement of other traditional Russian souvenir items. They can also purchase Christmas decorations and enjoy local delicacies. This includes Russian gingerbread, baked potatoes with mushrooms, and pancakes with caviar and mulled wine. 

A visit to the Red Square is not complete if you do not visit the ice skating rink close to the GUM department store. Admission fee is between 100 rubles and 500 rubles depending on the day and time. Adults can rent a skate for 250 rubles while children can also rent skates for 100 rubles. The ice rink is open from 10am to 11:30pm. Skaters need to deposit their ID cards or 2000 rubles to be able to rent a pair of skates.

Russia’s biggest ice slide also comes alive at the Winter Fun Island. The ice slide is 7 meters high and 100 meters long. This is located between Manezh Square and Revolution Square. A special traditional trade fair also takes place next to the Revolution Square. Visitors can purchase Russian souvenirs including shawls, fur hats, music boxes, Russian nesting dolls and other touristy items. 

The Gorky park is another fantastic place to visit during this festival. There is a Christmas carol quest where visitors solve puzzles, sing old Russian songs, and receive presents from fairy tale characters. Visitors can also rent skates and skate through most of the park which has been flooded with water so that it forms a nice track through the park. There is also a Christmas parade at the Gorky park. 

Tverskaya park is another place you will want to visit during the Journey to Christmas festival. Throughout the park you will see a wide range of different Christmas decorations, lights, and vibrant colors.  This park is known for having light shows set to music. Because of how great the display is, and how small of an area it is packed into it is also known for being crowded. Also, further away from the metro station they will have smaller displays including food and drink vendors, usually with a giant samovar on display.

Visitors can watch and participate in varied musical performances. They can also learn about musical instruments. This event takes place on the Island of charming sounds located at the theater square. Visitors can also visit the gourmet island where they get to taste a variety of popular dishes made by popular chefs in Moscow. The gourmet island stretches along the Kuznetsky street. 

There are special events for children as well. Children can ride the carousel, decorate Christmas trees, and sew dolls. Visitors can also visit the Charmed Forest Island located at the Revolution Square. Visitors get to enjoy ice ballet performances including “Swan Lake”, “Snow White”, and “Nutcracker”. These performances are staged by popular Russian figure skater Peter Tchernyshev. Guests also have the opportunity to skate for free. 

Visitors can also visit the Christmas Dwarf Maze located at Stoleshnikov lane buildings 2-8. They can get acquainted with the history of Russia while they take a walk through the maze. They can also visit the Little Story-teller Town where they can enjoy all kinds of sports including hockey, snowboard, and figure skating. 

Admission to the “Journey into Christmas” is free. The dates vary however, it is usually between mid-December and mid-January. Everyone is encouraged to dress warm for the festival, it is a Russian winter after all.  A good idea is to also bring water resistant boots or shoes with you. Even while the temperatures are below freezing you will see many puddles of water especially around Red Square.

Historical Information

Christmas was banned during the Soviet era and it was just a normal working day in the USSR. In 1935, Joseph Stalin declared New Year’s Day as a family holiday. This celebration led to the introduction of certain characters. This includes Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) and his Snow Maiden. The Snow Maiden was based on a legend about an elderly couple who had no children.

They created a little girl from snow. She became mortal and became their daughter during Winter but she melts away during Spring. Grandfather Frost is similar to the gift giving Father Christmas. Except that Grandfather Frost gives presents on Orthodox Christmas in the New Year, and not December 25th. He is aided by the Snow Maiden. 

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, many Russians have started celebrating Christmas.  However for them they celebrate on Orthodox Christmas which is January 7th. Many Russians have the entire first week of the new year off leading up to the holiday.

When Stalin outlawed Christmas, many people missed the holiday and looked for ways to sneak it back into society.  They found if they renamed things disassociating it with the holiday that they could bring them back. The Christmas Tree was replaced with New Year’s Tree in many homes. Today many Russians call a New Year’s Tree, what most westerners call a Christmas Tree.
