Table of Contents

What Should a Good Homework Spreadsheet Have?

In general, you’ll want a few fields that will help describe your assigned tasks and some markers for better organization. Here are some essential components to look for:

  • Assignment description: An efficient assignment tracking template will have space so you can jot down assignment notes. This avoids confusion and lets you anticipate the difficulty of your to-dos.
  • Dates:  Having dedicated fields for your due dates lets you plan your schedule better. This way, you know how much time you have to complete a task. Additionally, when paired with your assignment notes, you can sort them according to priority levels.
  • Completion status: Keeping track of task statuses lets you know which tasks have started, are in progress, are accomplished, or need revision. Moreover, it’s also a great way to remember which tasks you need to return to.
  • Subject and type:  You also want to categorize your assignments into their respective subjects. Another way to group them is by assignment type, including papers, lab reports, collaborative work, and similar tasks.

The components above are only a few useful fields in an assignment tracking template. For example, some spreadsheets also include monthly views or trackers for semester-wide assignment lists . Templates such as these will undoubtedly have other categories you’d need to explore.

Basic Assignment Tracking Template

With all the considerations laid out above, we created a simple but effective assignment tracking template you can use for free. While it may only feature a single functional tab, it has nine named columns you can organize according to your tasks.

If you haven’t already, you can download our free assignment tracking template here:

Let’s discuss the template in more detail .

Column A—Days Remaining

This is self-explanatory, but you can refer to this column to see the number of days you have left to do or submit your assignment. Depending on the days remaining, you can also decide which tasks to prioritize according to their deadlines.

The cells under this column are automatically updated using our pre-loaded formulas , so avoid modifying them. Instead, you can change the values under the last two columns of this template.

Columns B to D—Tags for Status, Subject, and Task Type

Under these columns, you can set the categories of your assignments either by their completion status, class, or assignment type. You can select the values from the drop-down lists that come with the template based on the American curriculum.

Additionally, these statuses are associated with specific colors, making them more visual so that you can view and handle multiple ongoing tasks more efficiently. If the subjects listed differ from what you’re currently taking, you can modify the options.

To modify the subject options, follow the steps below:

  • First, click on a cell’s drop-down list and locate the pen icon at the bottom.

  • Click the pen icon to open the drop-down settings on the left-hand side of your screen.
  • Change the values listed on the options, such as editing Math  to Physics.
  • Once you’ve set your preferred selection, click the “ Done” button.

  • Upon clicking, a pop-out might appear on your screen asking whether to apply the changes to a wider cell range.
  • Simply click “Apply   to all”  to replicate the changes to the other cells.

Another handy feature is the filter option in the “Status”  column. You can use this to view your tasks based on their completion level. For example, you can choose to see only the in-progress tasks. Here’s how you do it.

  • To get started, click on the filter icon next to the “Status”  label.

  • You should see a list of values with checkmarks on their left side once you scroll down.
  • To deselect all of them, click on “ Clear.”

  • Next, begin selecting the tasks you want to see per status, such as To start  and In-progress.
  • Finally, click “OK.”

  • To revert the view, simply follow steps one to five, ensuring to select all the categories again.

Columns E to I—Assignment Details

You can start entering the information you know about the tasks at hand. The columns E to G are divided into three categories: Assignment Title, Description, and Files/Links. If your assignment has attachments and URLs, such as resources, you can keep them in the last column mentioned.

Assignment tracking template—assignment details tracker

Meanwhile, columns H to I serve as fields where you can input the dates when your task is given and when you need to submit it. Take note that these are installed with data validation rules—you can’t enter values that aren’t valid dates. These values are also used to calculate the Days Remaining column.

Semester Assignment Spreadsheet

If you are looking to plan your entire semester ahead of time with your potential tasks, this is a helpful assignment tracking template. It’s much simpler than the previous spreadsheet discussed and gives you a semester-wide overview of your assignments.

Get the template here:   Semester Assignment Spreadsheet

This assignment tracking template has only three fields that you can update. The first field is the (1) Date , which is located under the seven days of the week (with a total of fifteen weeks in the spreadsheet as per the American semester.)

The second is the (2) Tags  field, which allows you to categorize your tasks according to the subject. As with the other template, these tags are color-coded for an easier view. Lastly, you can also populate the (3) Assignment Details , the blank spaces beside the tags.

Student Data Trackers in Google Sheets

Tracking Student Data in Google Sheeets: Video Tutorials & Student Data Tracker Templates

It can be difficult, at times, to keep track of all of your instructional data, especially with so many subjects during our day. Especially if your school district, or school, doesn’t have a data system. Google Sheets is a great tool to keep track of student data for ongoing formative assessments, as well as diagnostic assessments. Having your assessment data accessible also makes it easy to use data to drive classroom instruction, or intervention. Once you have your data spreadsheet set up, it’s easy to adjust for different needs. And, you can reuse the same set up year after year. There are so many ways to customize your student data tracker spreadsheets to fit your needs, and make it work for you! I talk about a few different set ups I’ve used, and/or continue to use, throughout this post. Here’s a look at some easy ways you can track student data with Google Sheets.

Why track student data in Google Sheets?

Tracking student data in Google Sheets has many practical benefits!

  • Accessibility- Since it’s cloud based, you can access it anywhere! I hate lugging my school computer home, so I rarely do. But, if I’m grading at home, I can still access my student data spreadsheets from home!
  • Collaboration- Since more than one person can access Google Sheets at once, it’s the perfect program for managing student data for more than one classroom. Tracking RtI or intervention data or grade level performance on a school or district assessment are both done easily within Google Sheets. Or, it just makes it possible for you to share your data with your administration team, principal, or instructional coach.
  • Autocalculations- My favorite reason for using Google Sheets or Excel for my data is the built in formulas! I use it to figure out student percentages from raw scores, I use it to generate a list of students based on proficiency, and I use it to color code based on student proficiency. I always build in averages into the spreadsheet so that I can monitor my overall student performance.
  • Visualization- If you are a visual learner, it’s super fast and quick to add graphs and charts to reflect your data. While that’s not frequently how I like to view it, it’s super simple to add in.
  • Versatile- From just checklists for attendance, weekly assessments, formative assessments, and more, you can use Google Sheets (or Excel!) to manage virtually anything you want to track in the classroom!

I used to use Excel to track my data, back in the olden days. Over the years, I’ve shifted to Sheets. I don’t think there’s a single feature I miss in my switch, especially since I don’t utilize the full functions of Sheets or spreadsheets in general.

How do I create student data trackers in Google Sheets?

The first iterations of my data tracking were literally just places to store scores. Over the years, as I’ve learned more about options available in Excel and now Google Sheets, I’ve been better able to customize them to meet my needs. Whether you’re looking to create one spreadsheet you can use to track data in a subject area, or a powerhouse of sheets to hold everything you need, you can build the spreadsheet that meets your needs.

I could list a series of steps to follow to build your student data tracker. But, chances are, if seeing the steps was enough for you, you would have already made your own! So, I think videos are the most helpful. Many people have anxiety around spreadsheet software but I love using them! I’ve spent significant amounts of time learning new things when I want the spreadsheet to do something I don’t yet know how to do! I’m not a pro by any means but I’ve learned a few tricks or two along the years.

This video walks through setting up a pretty basic, academic, standards-based student data tracker. I teach you how to build in formulas to copy information from other cells (so you don’t need to duplicate names), auto-calculating percentages, how to set up conditional formatting to color code based on student mastery, identifying the number of proficient students, and how to build in averages.

Free Student Data Tracker Template

In the video above I walk through how to set up this student data tracker and give suggestions for ways you can modify it to better meet your needs. If you’d rather not build it from scratch, I have a free standards tracking spreadsheet template you can download. The template is exactly what’s shown in the video, and it’s ready for you to continue to customize to meet your needs!

More In-Depth Student Data Tracking

In this Part 2 video, I take that same student data tracker and build individual student reporting pages. These allow you to see how each individual student is performing, standard-by-standard or skill by skill. It’s all set up with formulas so once it’s set up for one student, it’s pretty quick and simple to create it for the rest of the students in your class!  In this video, I talk through formulas for copying cells over to be displayed, adding graps, and conditional formatting.

Student Math Data Tracking Sheets

I think it’s very important to track student data standard by standard in math. It allows you to see who is in need of reteaching or extra support. So many skills build off of a previously learned skill in math. It makes it easy to spiral standards, but also means it’s critical students master them so they’re ready for the next layer. I have standards based math data tracking sheets prepped and ready for you. They’re currently available for grades 1-4. They are prebuilt with the Common Core Math Standards, but are editable so you can change them to match the standards for your state. Or, add in additional skills you’d like to track.

My favorite part of these math data trackers are the student information sheets. These student data pages are auto-generated! They’re literally  no extra work for you! They prepopulate based on the assessment scores you enter into the data spreadsheet. They display the student scores by standard, organized by domain. This makes them perfect reporting pages for parents, or to take with you to a data meeting like RtI, MTSS, or IEP case conferences.

2nd grade math standards data tracking student sheet

I have math data trackers available for 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade. They are ready to be used, and are customizable to match your state standards, or district’s assessments. Each is tailored to your specific grade level and includes a video tutorial that walks you through how to use them. You can get yours sent to your inbox (for free) at Math Data Tracking Spreadsheets .

Phonics Tracking Sheets

Another pre-made student data tracker template I have available is my phonics tracking spreadsheets. This spreadsheet is built using the Quick Phonics Screener but is entirely editable to match whatever assessment you use. Tracking phonics data skill by skill is a great way to ensure students are making progress with their foundational reading skills. I’ve included the video tutorial below, but head to my Free Phonics Data Tracker Spreadsheet page to grab the tracker and read more about it.

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Assessments Data Tracking

Do you give the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Assessments? If so, this data tracker is for you! Designed for the Kindergarten and Primary Phonemic Awareness Assessments, this data tracker also creates individual student reporting pages. Designed similar to my Phonics Data Tracker, just enter in names and scores and the individual pages are created for you! Just head to my Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Assessments page to grab it for yourself!

You can use Google Sheets to create even more in-depth student data trackers! Do you use Google Sheets in other ways? I’d love to hear it in the comments below.

Hi! Thank you so much for this! I have been trying to go digital! Is there a way to add more progress monitoring tabs?

You can add more tabs by just duplicating them. However, they will not show up on the student pages without extensive work.

Do you have a data tracker for UFLI?

I don’t. I believe they recommend the QPS or Core Phonics Survey as the diagnostic assessment. If you were wanting it to track your students’ progress each week, this is set up for diagnostic and progress monitoring assessments and not weekly. With that said, if the format fits your needs, you are able to edit the skill titles and raw scores to match any assessment’s sequence.

Thank you for your generosity!

Hi! It is not sending the data tracker sheet to my school email address. Would you be able to send me a copy?

Hi, my email service shows you opened the email and clicked the link, though it’s possible that’s just the filtering. Since the email came through, it seems, I’m not sure me sending it would go through any differently. It shows it sent on 7/15 and was opened. Can you confirm if you did or did not receive it? Otherwise, you may need to have it sent to a personal account because your district filter may be blocking it.

I am a sped teacher who tracks specific goals. Is there a way to use these trackers or could you guide me to modify this sheet?

Hi Shelly, I have a couple ideas. The video tutorials in this post show you a lot of ways you can set up your own. In each of the trackers I also include additional video tutorials on how to modify them. You can use these as a template to start and then change them. Send me an email at [email protected] and we can talk more!

Thank you so much for this and for all of the hard work you have put into this resource! You are greatly appreciated!

How to Create an Assignment Tracker in Google Sheets

student assignment tracker google sheets

Managing assignments can often feel overwhelming, especially when you're juggling multiple tasks at once. An assignment tracker can help you stay organized and keep your workload under control. Google Sheets offers an effective and flexible way to create an assignment tracker that suits your unique needs. This article will guide you through the process of creating your own assignment tracker from scratch.

Understanding the Importance of an Assignment Tracker

An assignment tracker is a vital tool for students, professionals, and anyone looking to keep tabs on their responsibilities. It helps to lay out all your tasks in an organized manner, providing a clear view of what needs to be done and when. With this clarity, you can mitigate the stress that generally accompanies deadlines and multi-tasking.

In addition, having a structured system can promote accountability. When you see your assignments listed, it inspires a sense of ownership over your tasks. You can better prioritize your workload and manage your time efficiently. A tracker also allows for reflection on your workload and helps identify patterns that can enhance your productivity. For instance, by regularly reviewing your completed tasks, you may notice trends in your work habits, such as peak productivity times or subjects that require more attention, enabling you to adjust your study strategies accordingly.

Benefits of Using Google Sheets for Tracking

Google Sheets is an excellent option for creating an assignment tracker due to its versatility and collaboration features. Here are several key advantages:

  • Accessibility: You can access your tracker from any device with an internet connection, allowing for flexibility and convenience.
  • Collaboration: Share your tracker with peers or mentors for feedback or assistance with group assignments.
  • Integrative Features: Utilize built-in functions and tools to enhance your tracker’s functionality.
  • Customization: Easily customize the layout and features to suit your specific requirements.

Moreover, Google Sheets supports various data visualization tools, enabling you to create charts and graphs that can provide insights into your progress over time. This visual representation can be particularly motivating, as it allows you to see how much you have accomplished and where you might need to focus your efforts. Additionally, the ability to set reminders and deadlines within your tracker can help ensure that you stay on top of your assignments, reducing the likelihood of last-minute scrambles. With the right setup, your assignment tracker can become not just a list of tasks, but a comprehensive management tool that enhances your overall academic or professional experience.

Setting Up Your Google Sheets

Now that you understand the importance of an assignment tracker, it's time to set up your Google Sheets. This process is straightforward and can be optimized for your personal style. A well-organized tracker not only helps you stay on top of your assignments but also serves as a motivational tool, allowing you to visualize your progress and deadlines. By creating a system that works for you, you can turn what might feel like a daunting task into a manageable and even enjoyable experience.

Basic Google Sheets Functions You Need to Know

Familiarity with basic Google Sheets functions will help you enhance your tracker significantly. Here are some essential functions to learn:

  • SUM: To quickly calculate totals.
  • AVERAGE: To find the mean of assignment grades.
  • COUNTIF: To count specific criteria, such as completed assignments.
  • FILTER: To view specific assignments based on status or priority.

Understanding these functions will not only streamline your workflow but also empower you to analyze your performance over time. For instance, using the AVERAGE function can help you identify trends in your grades, allowing you to adjust your study habits accordingly. Similarly, the COUNTIF function can provide insights into your productivity, showing you how many assignments you’ve completed versus those that are still pending.

Customizing Your Google Sheets Layout

Your assignment tracker should be visually appealing and functional. Consider these customization options:

  • Select a Theme: Google Sheets offers various themes to choose from, allowing you to set a cohesive look.
  • Bold Column Headers: This clarifies information categories such as assignment name, due date, and status.
  • Add Color-Coding: Use different colors for priorities or status to help categorize tasks visually.

In addition to these options, you might also want to explore using conditional formatting, which allows you to automatically change the color of a cell based on its content. For example, you could set it so that overdue assignments turn red, while completed ones turn green. This immediate visual feedback can be incredibly motivating and helps you quickly assess your workload at a glance. Furthermore, consider adding notes or comments to specific cells to jot down important details or reminders about each assignment, enhancing your tracker’s functionality even further.

Building Your Assignment Tracker

With your Google Sheets ready, it’s time to build your assignment tracker. This stage involves inputting vital information that tracks your assignments effectively.

Inputting Assignment Information

Start by creating column headers for relevant categories that cover your assignment details thoroughly. Suggested headers include:

  • Assignment Name

As you fill in the rows, ensure to keep the information concise yet comprehensive. This organization is essential for easy navigation and understanding. Consider adding additional columns for notes or links to resources that may aid in completing the assignments. This can be particularly useful for larger projects where multiple sources or references are needed. By keeping all relevant information in one place, you’ll save time and reduce the stress of searching for materials later on.

Adding Due Dates and Priorities

Adding due dates is crucial for effective tracking. Make use of Google Sheets’ date formatting function to ensure consistency. Highlight approaching due dates to serve as visual reminders for outstanding tasks. Additionally, categorizing assignments by priority can help you focus on what’s most important. Assign values such as High, Medium, and Low for better decision-making on how to allocate your time. You might also consider using color coding for different priority levels; for instance, red for high priority, yellow for medium, and green for low. This visual representation can make it easier to assess your workload at a glance and adjust your study schedule accordingly.

Furthermore, it’s beneficial to regularly review and update your assignment tracker. Set aside time each week to reflect on what has been accomplished and what still needs attention. This practice not only keeps your tracker accurate but also helps you stay motivated as you see your progress unfold. Additionally, consider sharing your tracker with classmates or study groups to promote collaboration and accountability. By working together, you can support each other in meeting deadlines and achieving your academic goals.

Utilizing Google Sheets Features for Assignment Tracking

Google Sheets offers numerous features that can optimize your assignment tracker, making it more effective and user-friendly.

Using Conditional Formatting for Better Visualization

Conditional formatting allows you to apply specific formats to cells based on certain criteria. For instance, you could set a rule where any overdue assignments appear in red while upcoming due dates are highlighted in yellow. This visual aid not only enhances clarity but also serves as a powerful motivational tool.

Creating Automatic Reminders

While Google Sheets doesn’t have a native reminder feature, combining it with Google Calendar can facilitate timely notifications. Set due dates in your sheet and create calendar reminders to alert you as deadlines approach, ensuring that you never miss a critical submission.

Maintaining and Updating Your Assignment Tracker

Having an assignment tracker is just the beginning. Regular maintenance and updates are essential for it to be effective.

Regularly Updating Your Tracker

Allocate time each week to update your tracker. Add new assignments, adjust due dates if necessary, and mark tasks as completed. This consistent practice will ensure that your tracker is always current and useful.

Archiving Completed Assignments

To keep your tracker uncluttered, consider archiving completed assignments. You can create a separate sheet within your Google Sheets document to store them, making it easier to focus on ongoing tasks while retaining a record of your past work.

Tips and Tricks for Effective Assignment Tracking

To maximize your productivity with your assignment tracker, incorporate the following strategies:

Avoiding Common Mistakes

Some common pitfalls include neglecting to update the tracker, not providing enough detail, or mismanaging priorities. Keep the tracker simple, but include enough detail to recall specifics about each assignment. Remember that a cluttered tracker can be just as unproductive as no tracker at all.

Maximizing Productivity with Your Tracker

Leverage your assignment tracker to improve your time management skills. Regularly reviewing your tasks will help you plan your study sessions effectively. It also allows you to break down larger assignments into smaller, manageable tasks, making them feel less daunting.

In conclusion, an assignment tracker can be an invaluable resource for managing your responsibilities. By utilizing Google Sheets, you can create a customized and efficient tracker that works for you. With a little effort, you will find that balancing your workload becomes significantly easier.

Word Tracker and Progress Tracker in Google Sheets

student assignment tracker google sheets

Ever dreamed of having a personal writing assistant right there in your Google Sheets? Imagine tracking your word count, setting goals, and watching your progress grow – all without leaving your favourite spreadsheet app. Well, your dream is about to come true! In this post, we're going to show you how to create your very own word counter and goal tracker using Google Sheets. It's super easy to set up, completely customizable, and perfect for keeping you motivated on your writing journey. Let's dive in and get started!

Why Create a Word Counter in Google Sheets?

Ever felt overwhelmed by the blank page? Or maybe you've set a lofty writing goal and wondered how you'd ever reach it. That's where our trusty word counter comes in!

By tracking your word count, setting goals, and watching your progress grow, you can stay motivated and focused on your writing. Plus, having it all in Google Sheets means it's always at your fingertips and easy to share with others.

Ready to give it a try? We've created a pre-made Google Sheet that you can use as a starting point, or you can follow along step by step. Let's get started!

Step 1: Set Up the Writing Space

First, let's create a cozy little space for your words to grow. This is where you'll pour out your thoughts and watch your word count climb. It's like your personal writing haven.

 Here’s how:

  • Open a new Google Sheet.
  • Create a new tab labeled “Words.” This will be the page where you paste your writing or word counts.
  • List your words in a column. For example, column A can contain the body of your writing.
  • In each row, add the text or words you’ve written for that session.

student assignment tracker google sheets

Now that your words are all in one place, we can move on to counting them!

Step 2: Automate the Word Count with Formulas

Now, let's give our words a little count. We'll use Google Sheets' clever tricks to do the heavy lifting, so you don't have to. It's like having a tiny word-counting elf working for you.

1. Create another tab called “Data Crunch.”

2. Use the ARRAYFORMULA function to extract the text from your “Words” sheet. In cell A1 of the "Data Crunch" tab, enter:

=ARRAYFORMULA('Words'!A2:A)

student assignment tracker google sheets

This formula pulls in all the words from your first sheet.

3. Use the SPLIT function to count the words. Create a new column (say, column B), and enter this formula to split words by spaces:

=IF(ISBLANK(A2),,COUNT1(SPLIT(A2,” “,TRUE,TRUE)))

student assignment tracker google sheets

This formula calculates the number of spaces in each row, which essentially gives you the word count.

Step 3: Summarize Your Progress

We've got our words counted, and now it's time to watch them grow! We're going to create a little progress bar that'll show you how far you've come. It's like having a visual cheerleader for your writing journey.

1. Create a new tab called “Summary.”

2. Calculate the total word count by summing up all the values from the “Data Crunch” tab. In the Summary sheet, use this formula:

=SUM('Data Crunch'!B:B)

student assignment tracker google sheets

This will give you a running total of your word count across all writing sessions.

3. Identify the last writing session. To display the word count from your latest session, use this formula:

=INDEX('Data Crunch'!B:B,COUNTA('Data Crunch'!A:A))

student assignment tracker google sheets

This will automatically pull the word count from the most recent entry.

Step 4: Create a Progress Bar with Sparkline

Now comes the fun part! We're going to create a visual that'll show you how far you've come. Imagine watching your progress bar fill up with each word you write. It's like a little reward for your hard work.

1. Set a target word count —let’s say your goal is 1,000 words for a writing session.

  • Create a dynamic progress bar. Use the SPARKLINE function in the Summary sheet. Enter this formula in a cell, and customize the colors to show progress in different ranges, such as red (0-50%), yellow (50-99%), and green (goal achieved). Use this formula:

=if(C8>=E8,sparkline(C8,{"charttype","bar";"max",E8;"color1","green"}),if(C8/E8>0.5,sparkline(C8,{"charttype","bar";"max",E8;"color1","yellow"}),sparkline(C8,{"charttype","bar";"max",E8;"color1","red" } )))

student assignment tracker google sheets

This formula creates a simple bar chart showing your progress toward the target. The "max" value represents the goal you set and adjusts the color of the progress bar based on how close you are to reaching your goal.

Step 5: Style Your Tracker for a Clean Look

A polished design makes all the difference! Here are a few tips to give your tracker a clean, professional look:

  • Hide gridlines by going to View > Show > Gridlines and unchecking the box.
  • Add borders to highlight key sections. Select the cells you want to emphasize, click the borders icon, and choose your preferred style.
  • Merge cells where necessary, especially to give your progress bar more space. Just select a few columns and merge them to make the progress bar span across them.
  • Add padding around your progress bar by inserting extra columns and rows. Set the row and column width to a consistent size (e.g., 20 pixels) for a balanced look.

Final Touches: Share & Customize

Once everything is set up, you can make the sheet your own. You can tweak the formulas, adjust the design, or change the goals. Google Sheets is highly flexible, and once you’ve got the basics down, the possibilities are endless.

If you’re looking to share the sheet with others, you can easily make a copy and send it their way. Better yet, if you’re a fan of Google Sheets like I am, you can use this template as a starting point and modify it for other projects!

That’s it! You’ve built your own word counter and progress tracker in Google Sheets. It’s a powerful tool to help you stay on track with your writing goals, and you don’t need any expensive software to use it. Feel free to customise it, share it, and improve it as you go.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out on Twitter or drop a comment below! Happy writing, and keep track of those words!
