State Websites Offer Fiscal Data on Local Governments

Practices and platforms vary, but dashboards provide insight and enhance transparency.

Navigate to:

  • Table of Contents

Most states require local governments to submit financial data—typically on an annual basis—and at least 38 now present that local fiscal data on easily accessible online platforms to give the public access to important information on their cities, towns, and counties.

The various state websites, which promote transparency by allowing a glimpse into local government finances, offer a range of features. Some enable users to compare localities, for example, while others let people create graphic visualizations of historical trends on local taxes and spending.

Among the states with such dashboards, California , Massachusetts , Michigan , New York , North Carolina , Ohio , and Washington provide assessments of local governments’ fiscal health using financial indicators or overall scores to bring additional insights. For example:

  • The Office of the New York State Comptroller’s Fiscal Stress Monitoring System includes fiscal scores for local governments for at least the previous three years that shed light on each entity’s finances. The scores represent composite measures based on indicators in categories such as year-end fund balance, operating deficits, and cash position. Based on the scores, the comptroller’s office identifies the local governments susceptible to or already under fiscal stress. Users can view each indicator over time and make comparisons among localities within the state .
  • The Michigan Department of Treasury’s Community Financial Dashboard calculates a set of fiscal indicators, including the strength of a local government’s savings and the size of its unfunded pension liability. To provide context, the dashboard ranks each municipality’s performance against other governments of the same type.

Economic Downturns: Protecting State and Local Budgets

In particularly challenging times, when revenue is volatile and priorities may need to be reassessed, it is important that lawmakers manage budgets effectively to mitigate fiscal stress.

In another approach, Louisiana maintains a list of “ fiscally distressed municipalities ” that its legislative auditor’s office reports may not be able to continue to provide basic services to residents in the near future because of financial issues.

Previous research by The Pew Charitable Trusts found that states that monitor the fiscal health of local governments may be better prepared to address financial problems before they become unmanageable. Having the information readily available to the public improves transparency and accountability.

Publishing local fiscal data online can help to elevate discourse on budgets and local priorities by making the information easily accessible. But that benefit often can be reduced by what can be considerable time lags in posting data.

For example, the steep and sudden impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the fiscal stability of cities and counties likely will not show up on these websites for at least a year. Still, the data do provide valuable information on the situation that local governments were in as they headed into the 2020 recession and can help states understand which localities might be particularly vulnerable to fiscal problems.

Table 1 provides links to the local fiscal data webpages for each of the states that now maintain such sites.

Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)

Cybersecurity image with a lock in the center surrounded by media types overlayed with locks.

Protect one another.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center, or IC3, is the Nation’s central hub for reporting cyber crime. It is run by the FBI, the lead federal agency for investigating cyber crime. Here on our website, you can take two vital steps to protecting cyberspace and your own online security.

First, if you believe you have fallen victim to cyber crime, file a complaint or report. Your information is invaluable to helping the FBI and its partners bring cybercriminals to justice.

Second, get educated about the latest and most harmful cyber threats and scams. By doing so, you will be better able to protect yourself, your family, and your place of work.

Anyone can become a victim of internet crime. Take action for yourself and others by reporting it. Reporting internet crimes can help bring criminals to justice and make the internet a safer place for us all.

With your help, the FBI can respond faster, better defend cyber networks, and more effectively protect our nation.

Be Proactive

Knowledge is the key to prevention. Educate yourself about threats to individuals and business and ways to protect yourself.

Between staying connected with family and friends, shopping and banking online, and working remotely, we all depend on security in our interconnected digital world. Criminals from every corner of the globe attack our digital systems on a near constant basis. They strike targets large and small—from corporate networks to personal smart phones. No one—and no device—is immune from the threat. The only way forward is together. In cyber security, where a single compromise can impact millions of people, there can be no weak links. Every organization and every individual needs to take smart, reasonable steps to protect their own devices and systems and to learn how to spot and avoid scams.

Combined with other data, it allows the FBI to investigate reported crimes, track trends and threats, and, in some cases, even freeze stolen funds. Just as importantly, IC3 shares reports of crime throughout its vast network of FBI field offices and law enforcement partners, strengthening our nation’s collective response both locally and nationally.

Due to the massive number of complaints we receive each year, IC3 cannot respond directly to every submission, but please know we take each report seriously. With your help, we can and will respond faster, defend cyber networks better, and more effectively protect our nation.

This chart displays total complaints and loses over the last five years. In 2018 there were 351,937 complaints and $2.7 billion in loses. In 2019 there were 467,361 complaints and $3.5 billion in loses. In 2020 there were 791,790 complaints and $4.2 billion in loses. In 2021 there were 847,367 complaints and $6.9 billion in loses. In 2022 there were 800,994 complaints and $10.3 billion in loses. In the total five-year period from 2018 to 2022 IC3 received a total of 3.26 million complaints, reporting a loss of $27.6 billion.

Chart includes yearly and aggregate data for complaints and losses over the years 2018 to 2022. Over that time, IC3 received a total of 3.26 million complaints, reporting a loss of $27.6 billion.

N.C. Gov. candidate Mark Robinson vows to stay in race despite report showing disturbing comments on pornographic website

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson says he will not step aside as the Republican nominee for the Tar Heel State’s governor despite a new report from CNN which revealed a series of comments on a pornographic website’s message board which appear to show him referring to himself as a “black NAZI” and saying that “slavery is not bad” and wishing “they would bring it (slavery) back.”

What You Need To Know

North carolina lt. gov. mark robinson says he will not step aside as the republican nominee for the tar heel state’s governor despite a  new report from cnn  which revealed a series of comments on a pornographic website’s message board in a  social media post  ahead of the release of the story, the republican lieutenant governor of the state alleged that the news media and his opponent are "at it again" and denied the report, saying the comments in the story are "not the words of mark robinson" cnn reported on posts it says robinson made on the message board of a pornography website from 2008 to 2012, before he entered politics. on it, robinson referred to himself as a “black nazi” and expressed support for reinstating slavery, according to the report robinson has been known on the campaign trail for his at times inflammatory rhetoric.

In a social media post ahead of the release of the story, the Republican lieutenant governor of the state alleged that the news media and his opponent are "at it again" and denied the report, saying the comments in the story are "not the words of Mark Robinson."

"You know my words, you know my character, and you know that I have been completely transparent in this race and before," Robinson said, before invoking Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' words about being the victim of a "high tech lynching."

"We are staying in this race," Robinson said. "We are in it to win it."

CNN reported on posts it says Robinson made on the message board of a pornography website from 2008 to 2012, before he entered politics. On it, Robinson referred to himself as a “black NAZI” and expressed support for reinstating slavery, according to the report.

Despite his anti-transgender political stands today, he also said he enjoyed watching transgender pornography and admitted to secretly “peeping” women in public gym showers at 14 years old, CNN reported. He also maligned civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., writing “Get that f***ing commie b****** off the National Mall!,” after the dedication of the memorial to King in Washington, according to CNN.

CNN said it found numerous biographical similarities between the online account and Robinson. And the account used Robinson’s full name and an email address the gubernatorial candidate is known to have used.

Robinson denied the reporting separately to CNN . Spectrum News has not independently verified the claims.

Reports began emerging Thursday morning that the report on Robinson could be damaging and potentially even lead to calls for him to step aside from the North Carolina gubernatorial election, one of the most closely watched races in the country.

North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd, a fellow Republican, called the allegations in the report "disgusting" in a statement Thursday.

"Mark Robinson says they are not from him," Budd said. "He needs to prove that to the voters."

Another North Carolina Republican lawmaker, Rep. Richard Hudson, said it's on Robinson to "assure" the people of the state that his comments are not true.

"The allegations are very concerning," Hudson told reporters. "He says they're not true. I think he needs to assure the people of the state with a little more detail that they aren't true."

North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry told reporters he read the story and it's "not good."

North Carolina Rep. Jeff Jackson, a Democrat running for state attorney general in November, said Robinson "has no business serving in any elected capacity whatsoever."

"I'd like to hear from all the Republicans in North Carolina where they stand on this, because it really should not be a difficult question," Jackson told reporters , urging members of the GOP to "read what he wrote" and accusing Robinson of "lying by denying it."

Other statewide Republicans weighed in, though many have not commented on the report. Republican state Sen. Scott Lassiter, who represents a district in the Raleigh area, urged Robinson to "suspend his campaign to allow a quality candidate to finish this race," while North Carolina RNC member Ed Broyhill said the story "seems like a dirty trick to me."

Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign sought to quickly tie the allegations to Donald Trump, sharing a video of the former president praising Robinson as "better than Martin Luther King." At the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Trump's running mate, ignored questions from reporters about the Robinson report.

"Donald Trump has a Mark Robinson problem," Harris campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa wrote on social media, alongside a photo of Trump and Robinson together.

Trump's campaign appeared to try and distance the former president from the report, with a spokesperson responding to the news with a statement that singularly focused on their efforts to win the state, without mentioning Robinson by name.

"President Trump’s campaign is focused on winning the White House and saving this country. North Carolina is a vital part of that plan," said Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, lobbing attacks at Harris by attempting to contrast the two candidates' records on familiar but unrelated issues like the border and inflation. "We will not take our eye off the ball."

Sabato's Crystal Ball at UVA Center for Politics, a popular election prognosticator, quickly moved the race from "Leans Democratic" to "Likely Democratic" following the release of the story. Polls have shown the race between Harris and Trump tight in North Carolina, but have shown Robinson trailing Democratic opponent Josh Stein, the state's attorney general, by a large margin.

Robinson has been known on the campaign trail for his at times inflammatory rhetoric, including saying "some folks need killing" in a speech at a church about "evil" people threatening American Christianity, calling LGBTQ+ people "filth" and saying abortion is "about killing the child because you weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down."

  • We are tracking layoffs across all industries, not just tech.
  • We are following individual WARN records from government entities, rather than crowdsourced data.
  • Most of these records indicate exact offices and employee counts affected at each office, rather than just a single overall number for the entire company
  • These records are often more exhaustive than the crowdsourced data. This means they reflect small layoffs, as well as layoffs from companies which may not be large enough to be announced in the press
  • The timeline for filing these notices can vary -- they may be made available before or after a public announcement, so if you really want to stay on top of things, then you can follow both types of sources

PDF , 15.1 MB , 331 pages

In July 2024, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care commissioned Lord Darzi to conduct an immediate and independent investigation of the NHS.

Lord Darzi’s report provides an expert understanding of the current performance of the NHS across England and the challenges facing the healthcare system. Lord Darzi has considered the available data and intelligence to assess:

  • patient access to healthcare
  • the quality of healthcare being provided
  • the overall performance of the health system

In line with the terms of reference of the investigation , Lord Darzi has only considered the state of the NHS in England. UK-wide analysis is occasionally used when making international comparisons.

Arizona State running back Raleek Brown will miss Saturday’s matchup against Texas Tech due to a hamstring injury that ailed him earlier in the season, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel .

Brown is listed as the Sun Devils’ third-string running back on the latest depth chart with an “OR” alongside him, senior DeCarlos Brooks and junior Alton McCaskill. Thamel reports Brooks “should return” after he did not play against Texas State.

Through three games, 68 of the 103 carries among the running backs have gone to Cam Skattebo. Brooks has the second-most with 14.

Brown has two of those carries for one yard this season, making his ASU debut in the Texas State matchup after missing the first two games. The sophomore transfer from USC had 42 carries for 227 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman in 2022.
