101 games to play to practise speech sounds
Well, maybe not quite 101, but lots!…
If your child or a child you are working with is having speech sound therapy, it won’t take you long to realise that there is a lot of repetitive practise involved! It’s very likely that at some point you’ll be given a set of pictures or a particular sound or set of words to practise with your child. The tricky bit is keeping this motivating for your child (and you!) The best way to do this is to play as many games as you can. This post is all the ideas that we could think of games to play to practise speech sounds (part one – there are too many for one post!)
First of all, you will probably have been given a set of pictures by your child’s speech and language therapist. However, if you haven’t and you want a set of pictures of words for the sounds you have been asked to practise with your child, you can find some free to download here or here .
Now without further ado, the game ideas. I’ve split these into sections to help you find what you want:-
Games to play with just a set of pictures
- Ask your child to say the words, then post them into a postbox. If you don’t have a postbox, use a cardboard box to make one.
- Hide the pictures around the room for the child to find and say (a great game for kids who don’t like sitting still). If you’re working at sentence level, you could then ask your child to say where they found the picture.
- Spread the pictures out on the floor. Throw a beanbag or rolled up sock and ask your child to say the word that it landed on.
- Put the pictures in a bag. Ask your child to pull them out one at a time and say them.
- Put 4-5 pictures on the table. Ask the child to close their eyes and then take one away. Can your child tell you which one has gone?
- Spread the pictures across the floor (or even one on each stair). Get your child to jump from one to the other and say the words as they go.
- Stick the pictures up around the room. Say a word and get your child to run to the one you said. Then ask them which one they ran to. Otherwise get them to give instructions to you or another child to do the running!
- If you have two sets of pictures, play a game of memory pairs. Use 6 or so pairs of pictures, mix them up and spread them out face down on the table. Take turns with your child to turn over two pictures and say them. If they are the same, keep them. If they are different turn them back over. The winner is the one with the most pairs.
- Lay several pictures out on the table. Describe one of them and see if your child can tell you which one you were talking about.
- Find a soft indoor ball and a bucket or bin. Ask the child to say a word and then throw the ball into the bucket/bin. Older children often enjoy moving the bucket a little further away each time and seeing if they can still get the ball in.
- For a child who likes cars, lay out a long line of pictures like a road (or a track for a train). Get your child to drive their favourite vehicle over the cars and say the words as he drives over them.
- Buy a small magnet and make a fishing rod with a stick and a piece of string. Attach paper clips to the pictures and see if your child can “fish” for the words.
- If you are working at sentence level – split the pictures into two piles. Turn over two and see if the child can make up a silly sentence with those two words in.
- Again, for sentence level work, turn over two pictures and try to find a link between them. EG a car and a key go together because you open the car with a key.
Shop-bought games
You don’t need to buy anything special to practise speech sounds. However, you may find you have games like this in the house already, or want to buy something new. Basically any simple turn-taking game can be good to make speech work more interesting. It needs to be a game with short turns to that you spend more time practising than you do focussed on the game! The idea is that whatever game you’re using, you ask the child to say their word, sentence or string of words/ sounds before they take a turn. Here are some games I’ve found that children of different ages enjoy.
- Stacking Robots
- Any simple board game like Snakes and Ladders or this lovely variation of it from Orchard Toys.
- Jigsaw puzzles

27 Free Online Games for Speech Therapy You Need to Know About
Online games that are quick to play are perfect for speech teletherapy.
Like many SLPs right now, I’m a newly minted teletherapist due to school closures during the COVID 19 pandemic. After three months of diving into speech therapy telepractice this spring, I quickly realized that I need more tricks up my sleeve to keep my students engaged with me online! Thirty minutes of pure drill time wasn’t cutting it. It wasn’t long before they started looking at me with eyes that said “What else have you got?”
And…like a bunch of you, I’ll be headed back to school seeing my students online, at least for now. So it’s time to gather up some great resources to keep participation and interest high!
It’s important to mix it up with a variety of activities to keep students engaged during online speech therapy sessions.
Especially the youngest ones. Gee- in that respect it’s not unlike in-person sessions, is it?
I may have 2-3 different activities during a session. including books, real games (I take their “turn” for them in front of the camera), puppets, toys for the younger crowd, riddles, and worksheets we could draw or write on with annotation tools. I also love Boom Cards and digital resources like interactive pdfs. I like to get my kiddos up and moving sometimes too. We all need that!
Online games are a favorite activity for my speech therapy students.
No prep for you, fun for them. If you are using a platform like Zoom where you can give your students control, any of these games are great. If you can’t give students control, look at the online board games that automatically advance. You can click the dice for your students.
I keep a document of links on my desktop so I can head over to a great online game quickly during a session. Ready for a list to make your teletherapy planning easier? Here you go!
Here are some of my favorite sites for engaging, quick-play online games.
I’ve played a lot of games y’all, and I’ve listed games from these sites that load easily, are quick to play, motivating, and won’t take away too much therapy time! You may want to look through the main sites and see if there are more games you love.

Great for Telepractice
Telepractice is the application of telecommunications technology (such as online classrooms and chat software) for the delivery of speech-language pathology services at a distance by linking the speech-language pathologist to their client or student from far away. It can be used for testing to determine speech therapy eligibility, as well as direct treatment of communication disorders and consultations with families. Telepractice applications can include schools, medical centers, rehabilitation hospitals, community health centers, outpatient clinics, universities, clients' homes, residential health care facilities, child care centers, and corporate settings. There are no limits to where telepractice can be implemented, as long as there is an internet connection, a speech-language pathologist, and a communication partner who is ready to learn. This can be especially helpful for individuals in rural areas, or where physical disabilities may limit access, or for students attending school from home.
Even though this site is designed for teletherapists, the exact same tools can be used in a face-to-face therapy setting with computer and internet access.
Great for families
Research shows that when school-aged children practice speech and language skills more often, they make more progress in their communication skills. Even practicing speech their five minutes a day will improve a student's carryover, where they learn to apply their skills in areas outside speech therapy sessions, such as in the classroom, on the playground, or at home.
Where to Start
The activities in this site are organized in two different ways: by developmental level and by area of communication. The left side of the menu at the top has speech and language activities organized by developmental level, or by certain milestones that children are expected to achieve by certain ages. The suggested ages given below are based on typical development, so some students with moderate to severe communication delays or disorders may need to work at a level that is below their real age. For older students, reading levels also may have an impact on what level is best for them.
- Emerging activities are targeted at students developing language for the first time, and would be great for preschool students. The vocabulary is simple and functional, including many household objects and core vocabulary. This section would also be a great resource for students using AAC devices and still learning the meaning of core vocabulary.
- Developing activities are targeted at students in grades K-2, who are learning early reading skills and seeing a wide expansion of their vocabulary. In this section, there is a broader set of terms that may support elementary science, history, or reading academic content.
- Expanding activities are targeted at students in grades 3-5, who are developing more reading skills and expanding their vocabulary into more specific and complex terms or concepts, especially ones that they may not have been exposed to before. Aside from additional vocabulary expansion, multicultural concepts are introduced in this section, and the activities demand a higher level of thought and complexity in each answer.
- Perfecting activities are intended for students in grades 6+, who should be reading at near-adult levels and able to engage complexly and deeply with content, and is asking students to engage with high-level concepts as well as develop tools to understand words or concepts they've never seen before using the skills they have.
The right side of the menu at the top has speech and language activities organized by area of speech. Speech-language pathologists are professionally trained to provide intervention in five domains of communication: articulation, language, fluency, pragmatics, and voice. Each section will have games and activities that target each area.
- Articulation contains activities to target issues with speech sounds, to support someone who is difficult to understand, can't pronounce certain words/sounds, leaves out sounds in words, or replaces one sound with another.
- Language contains activities to target expressive and receptive language, which would support someone who has difficulty with asking questions, answering questions, forming grammatically correct sentences, and finding relationships between concepts.
- Social contains activities to target pragmatic and social language, which would support someone who has difficulty talking to others their same age, staying on topic in conversation, appropriately adding to conversations, and solving social conflicts.
- Fluency contains activities to target stuttering, which would support someone who may repeat sounds in words, have blocks while talking where they're unable to speak, or insert sounds or pauses into their speech.

I bet you guessed this SLP staple would be on the list! Pop The Pig involves feeding the pig burgers until he's too full and pops! Each burger has a number on the bottom to indicate how many times to push his head. These numbers can be the amount of speech sound trials or language targets (ex: The number is 3. Name 3 shapes.)
(3) Shark Bite
Shark Bite includes each player using a fishing rod to pull out a sea animal at a time. If you pull out the wrong one, he snaps! Perfect for an ocean theme or pair with any artic/phono cards!
(4) Ned's Head
Ned's Head is a goofy game where you stick your hand into Ned's ear or mouth to pull out funny objects! Each object has a corresponding card. In the beginning you choose cards and reach inside to try to find the matching object on your card. You can't look inside, you can only feel your way around! Perfect for labeling, describing, adjectives, sizes, and much more!
(5) Crocodile Dentist
This adorable croc needs to see the dentist! (It even has braces!) Find out which tooth is bothering him by pressing down on a tooth inside his mouth. If the croc chomps down on you, you're out, and the last person left wins! This is a great game for learning about occupations such as dentists or during a jungle theme. Feed him pictures during the game with target words! Use core boards to model "give" and "eat." Because of the chomping action of the game, I love to play this with my students who require lots of movement! It pairs perfectly with There Was a Crocodile Song by The Learning Station video where they replace each animal name with its associated movement.
(6) Sneaky Snacky Squirrel
The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel is hungry for acorns! Spin the spinner to see if you'll take, steal, or lose an acorn. The person to fill their log with all of their acorns is the winner. The best part is that there are squirrel tongs to pick up the acorns! (Hello fine motor practice!) Use with a fall or a forest theme. Can be paired with any target per turn! I love to use it as a companion activity to go along with my squirrel-themed books, such as Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt .
(7) Rattlesnake Jake
Rattlesnake Jake is protecting a bunch of gold nuggets. Each player takes a turn taking a gold nugget. Whoever has the most gold at the end wins! But watch out, he may lunge at you, forcing you to put back half of the gold nuggets you have. If you get a gold nugget, you get to flip a coin for a chance at it again - great for multiple trials! Use the gold nuggets to cover target words. If your student has to put half of them back, they have to say all of the target words those nuggets were covering.
(8) Burping Bobby
Burping Bobby is a silly game where you feed stinky food to the hippo until he burps! Each game piece has a number on the back which is great for multiple trials of target words. When Bobby burps, his throat turns green and a vapor comes out. (Don't worry, he doesn't actually stink like a burp- YUCK!) Highly engaging and fun!
(9) Candy Land
Candy Land is a sweet, classic board game! Spin to reach the next color on the game board. First one to reach King Candy's Castle wins! Count the number of spaces it takes to get to the color you spun to determine the amount of trials for your students! Describe, compare, and contrast the different candies and sweets you see in the game. Find speech sound targets using items on the game board - /s/: sweet, ice cream, house, castle, etc. Great alongside a food theme or even a holiday theme with the gingerbread game pieces!
(10) Jumping Jack
Collect as many carrots as you can from Jack by pulling them out of the garden. The right carrot will make him jump up. Catch him to win this fun game! Use the carrot pieces to cover target words or to use as pointers when making sentences. Great alongside an animal, bunny, spring, or Easter theme! I like to play this game after reading a spring or bunny book, such as Too Many Carrots by Katy Hudson .
(11) Pop Up Pirate
Ahoy mateys! Place swords inside the barrel until the pirate pops out! Whoever has the most swords wins. Use with ANY speech/language target. Play this swashbuckling game any time during the year or alongside a pirate theme! (FYI: Talk Like a Pirate Day is September 19th!)
(12) Banana Blast
Banana Blast involves pulling banana's out from the tree until the monkey jumps up! Use the bananas to cover target words on cards or symbol boards. Use alongside a jungle or food/fruit theme! The person with the most bananas wins!
(13) Hi Ho! Cherry-O
Another classic staple for your speech therapy game collection! You want to be the first person to pick off all the fruit from your tree and fill your basket! This is perfect for multiple trials of target words and is a great game to start the school year off with since it resembles apple picking!
(14) Cootie Bugs
Create your own cootie bug before the other players create theirs! I love this game because it there are no time constraints, it can last you the whole session! To start the game, you have to roll a 1 to get the body of the bug. Then you have to roll a 2 to get the head of the bug, and so on as you add more body parts to your bug. In order to roll the desired number, this may take many turns, which means MANY trials!! You can target describing and sequencing as you design your cootie bug!
(15) Operation
Rounding out the list with another classic - Operation! Great for adding fine motor practice!! Collect money every time you successfully remove an object from the patient with a pair of tongs. The player with the most money wins! Be careful, if the tongs hit the side of the game board, a buzzer will go off and the next player will have a chance to remove the item. Removing items without the buzzer going off is often challenging, making this game last longer and quite possibly filling your session! Describe the removed items, add artic/phono targets, or use with a community helper theme!
