Every essay needs three parts to make it read well:

  • An introduction
  • The main body
  • A conclusion

The introduction

This should refer to the title but should not simply repeat it. It should clearly state what you are going to say and how you will approach the question.

The main Body

Try to examine at least three areas/ themes. Each one must have its own paragraph. Do not mix the themes between paragraphs. Each paragraph should be all you have to say about that theme/aspect.

Each paragraph should contain a clear argument. Avoid waffling and always support your ideas with evidence/ examples.

For the essay to fit into the top band for content, you MUST show all of the following:

● Knowledge of the film or text is consistently accurate and detailed. ● Opinions, views and conclusions are consistently supported by relevant and appropriate evidence from the film or play. ● The essay demonstrates excellent evaluation of the issues, themes and the cultural and social contexts of the film/ play. (Taken from AQA mark scheme)

The conclusion This should be a bringing together of your argument taking it literally to an end - i. Your own opinion from the evidence you have shown above. No new ideas in the conclusion. Avoid repeating sections from the main body. The conclusion should be concise. Refer back to the essay title to make sure you have answered the question properly

The Language of the essay

20/40 marks are for the quality of language. You are allowed occasional “minor” errors but you must show a consistent secure grasp of grammar. You are also required to manipulate complex language accurately. You must use a wide range of vocabulary appropriate to the context and to the task. (Taken from AQA mark scheme)
